A Winter Sequence

Published on Nov 28, 2015 experimentalsynth

"After hooking up the gear, this piece kind of wrote itself. Patterning on the iPad was the master MIDI Clock. The Pro 2 and MicroBrute sequencers, along with the H9 and a Line 6 Echo Pro were synced to it. The Pro 2 sent independent synced CV step sequences to modulate the Voyager filter and the filter on a Moog MF-101 Low Pass Filter processing the MicroBrute. The MicroBrute audio was also processed by the Echo Pro.

Meng Qi Wing Pinger Prototype Videos

Published on May 1, 2019 Meng Qi

Playlist:

1. Wing Pinger - Chaos
With multiple feedback and cross modulation paths, Wing Pinger operates according to the principles of chaos theory. All parameters except volume are interactive, future outputs are related to the current state as well as parameter settings.
2. Wing Pinger - CVGate
Wing Pinger talks to modular synthesizers via Banana jacks. Use TRIGGER outputs to sync external synthesizers to filter pings. STEP outputs are weighted mixes from shift registers.
3. Wing Pinger - Tonal Patterning
Be chaotic at will, you don't miss the expressions from melodies. Wing Pinger is capable of generating pentatonic patterns from its carefully weighted STEP modulation.
4. Wing Pinger - External Sound Processing
Process stereo or dual mono signals through great sounding filters, add spice to the tone, generate movements with special Wing Pinger modulations.

Wing Pinger will be at SUPERBOOTH and other events. You can find the list on the Meng Qi website.

"Your link to organic analog texture, rhythm, noise and melodies.

Travels between chaotic and tonal passages as fast as your emotions shift.

It encourages fine playing gestures and rewards practicing.

Wing Pinger is an analog musical instrument, centered around a pair of 4-pole resonate low pass filters.

Surrounded by a network of comparators, pulse converters, binary counters and shift registers.

Despite the absence of oscillators, it's fully capable, and actually designed to generate sound on its own."

Exploring Apps 02 // Ribbons : Expressive Electronic Instrument

Published on Nov 2, 2017 Computing.Sound

"Exploring the 'Ribbons' iOS iPad app by Olympia Noise Co..
Here I'm using the apps internal sound engine, but it also can send MIDI."

via iTunes: Ribbons : Expressive Electronic Instrument - Olympia Noise Co.

Note Ribbons has been out for some time now, but I do not think I've featured it here on MATRIXSYNTH before now. The following are some screenshots and details captured for the archives.

"Ribbons is an extraordinarily fun and expressive musical instrument for iPad.

Inspired by early electronic instruments such as the Ondes Martenot and the Theremin, Ribbons (formerly "Ondes") emulates the fluid playing style of those classic instruments with an interface and synthesis engine firmly grounded in the present day.

Soulsby Synthesizers Launches The Oscitron at NAMM 2017

The official press release follows. See here for previous posts w/ demos.

"Anaheim, USA - 19/1/17.

Soulsby Synths have launched their first Eurorack module, The Oscitron, on the first day of this year's NAMM show. It is available from their website and will soon be available from retailers (see website for list). It comes bundled with the Uni-Five utility module for £260. The modules are also available separately.

The Oscitron is an 8-bit wavetable oscillator. The audio engine is based on the Atmegatron desktop synth module but has many differences too. These include an audio input that can sample wavetables and an adjustable audio engine resolution.

Other features include pitch quantizer, 15 filter algorithms, wave-crusher pulse width and phaser effects. There are 5 CV inputs, a clock input which can be routed to many parameters and an audio input and output.

As with the Atmegatron, there will be numerous software versions released for the Oscitron. A port of the the Odytron analogue modelling software will be released soon after launch.

The Uni-Five is the companion module to the Oscitron and converts bipolar LFOs and 8V envelopes to 0-5V control voltages suitable for the Oscitron inputs.

There are 2 other exciting announcements at NAMM this year. First a new limited edition Atmegatron designed by Pete Fowler (Super Furry Animals / Monsterism). Only 30 have been made, each signed and numbered. The design features a bright pink glossy finish with monsterism screen print patterning.

Finally, the initial prototype of the Atmultitron is on demonstration. It is a 6 voice polyphonic 8-bit synthesizer with 3 octave keyboard. The final specification will feature Eurorack connectivity and wavetable sampling from the Oscitron, along with sequencing and versatile modulation routing. The Atmultitron is aimed to be released in mid-2018.

'The initial prototype of the Oscitron was premiered at NAMM 2016', said Paul Soulsby CEO of Soulsby Synthesizers. 'One year on we are delighted to launch the finished product and premiere the next big project, the Atmultitron.'"

Note the knob area is clear/see-through.

Pretty cool!

Like a little space station in there.

Vermona '14: Mono Study #1; "A Voice Rises"

Published on Nov 5, 2018 Kris Lennox

"Writing standalone solo works for a mono synth can be a challenge i.e. only one note, no harmony etc. This is the first from a set of mono works written within a two-octave range.

The idea is to write music anyone can try, irrespective of equipment. If someone owns he likes of an Alesis Q25/any form of 25-key MIDI controller, they could play this work on it. These works don't even have to be performed on synth - they could be performed on guitar, on violin etc. The positive RE a limited range is opening up potential instrumentation/suitability.

Delay should be very obvious. I spent a lot of time structuring this work; at certain points you'll hear what sounds like a human voice rising from the synth. It is the combined effect of tone, delay, and dynamic accent - more so the delay/accent.

1:40 is the first appearance of the human-like voice: the music is running through 6-note semiquaver phrases, which displaces the patterning of the delay against the grouping - which gives rise to the vocal-like effect.

However, the most prominent occurrence is at c. 2:25 - at this point the semiquaver groupings change to 5-note phrases, again displacing the delay pedal/phrase relationship. I'm also slightly accenting the note I want to rise.

Keeping the timing steady to achieve this is very difficult, as the effect only happens when the rhythmic synchronisation is locked in.

Difficult to achieve, but worth the effort!

Best
Kris"

Modular Jam 59 'Sex Drive'

Published on Sep 18, 2016 ngarjuna

Borderline NSFW, so all you peeps at work, be warned! Great track though so be sure to check it out later if you can't now.

"Patch Notes:
Drums, bass and modular percussion elements were from an older session (from before I started keeping patch notes unfortunately). Drums were in Patterning processed through Flux and Filtatron and Replicant. The bass patches were all west coast patches made with 258 VCOs, Optomix and Maths. The modular percussion was also made with the same sort of arrangement (probably being modulated by PEG and Wogglebug...sorry it was a while ago)

Acid Patch 1
Standard-ish acid patch:
Seq 1 driving Rubicon sigmoid into VCF-303
303 EGs out (through Maths for mix) to uVCA

Acid Patch 2
There are two variants, Bandpass (A) and Lowpass (3 pole):
Sequencer 1 triggering Maths ch1 and Dual ADSR (Gate) and Minimod EGs (Accent)
Pitch going to Cranial Saw in sawtooth with a tiny bit of sub
Into Polaris modulated by Rubicon sine (via uVCA modulated by PEG OR) at audio rate in FM1, mix of Wogglebug Stepped Out and Maths ch1 envelope (on gate) and an accent envelope from the Minimod (AD)
Wogglebug smooth providing fall modulation to Maths ch1
Dual ADSR ch1 into Minimod VCA (Gate), Minimod EG2 into Minimod VCA (Accent)

Vocals
All made with the TransVocal Discombobulator (my own little monstrosity made from Uhe Diva, Zynaptiq Morph and Cytomic's The Drop)
