Plankton Electronics Ants! Mini Modular Synthesizer
Perfect Circuit Audio
Published on Aug 8, 2017
"Here are four patches with the powerful and compact Ants! modular synthesizer from Plankton Electronics.
Ants! from Plankton Electronics, is a standalone desktop analog modular synth. It contains four analog VCOs, two of which can double as LFOs, as well as two dedicated LFOs, providing six oscillators in all. Complete with a resonant VCF, two Envelope generators, two VCAs, Sample & Hold modulation, a noise generator, and a few mixing capabilities, one can fit an entire modular synth in a backpack. A MIDI to CV converter is built in, meaning one can play Ants! easily with a MIDI controller or via MIDI tracks in a DAW.

Ants! as an fx processor
Ants! in depth. Technical details
Plankton Electronics Ants! has reached their funding goal on Kickstarter. The have added new stretch goals as follows:
"If we hit the 45.000€ Ants! will have:
An extra CV output. The Midi in connector will be at the rear part (still with a 3.5mm jack) and we will add a second cv output. CC or velocity.
Selectable midi channel instead of 'midi learn'
A sync in on the LFO1.
Envelope 1 will be a triggered Attack/Decay instead of a gated Attack/Release.
One of the LFOs will have a sine wave output.
We will replace the attenuators for 'attenuverters' in the mixer section.
A big and complete "patch book" with video demos. From basic sounds to complex patching"

A Fistful of Ants!: Live Jam with Elektron Digitakt and Plankton Electronics Ants!
Published on Oct 27, 2017 Olivier Ozoux
"I sold and bought a few different synths over the Summer, and it took me a while to integrate the new instruments into my workflow. Here's the first track I've made with my Studio In A Box V2.0.
As usual, everything is recorded live and in a single pass. Here's the instrument list:
- Squarp Pyramid: sequence all the things
- Elektron Digitakt: sample based drums
- MFB Tanzbär Lite: analog drums
- Yamaha MU-80: Additional percussion, piano, and pizzicato strings
- PreenFM2: Bassline, and wooden arpeggio
- Audiothingies MicroMonsta: 2nd Bassline
- Modor NF-1m: main chord progression
- Waldorf Blofeld: ambient pads
- Plankton Electronics Ants!: analog plucky arpeggio"

Plankton Electronics Ants! and Koma Elektronik BD101 in Electronic Noodlings for Electronics
Published on Dec 16, 2017 Nice and Synths
"Here's another video with sound. Sometimes the sounds are quiet then loud, so watch out. It's not too bad though, I did level things out a bit. All sound is from the Ants! directly into the BD101, directly into a Focusrite Scarlett 18i6. No processing was done...except for the previously mentioned leveling of the levels.
And now let's do some unnecessary and wordy descriptions of all the boring stuff that happens in this video.
0:00 Intro. Fully dry signal from the Ants! through the BD101. Two oscillators played duophonically: one sine, one triangle. The AD envelope is controlling the filter (in highpass mode.) The ASR envelope is controlling the VCA.
0:20 From now to the end of the video it is the fully wet signal from the BD101. One LFO from Ants! is providing square wave modulation of the delay time. Another LFO (2 regular oscillators also have an LFO mode) is providing a little vibrato for the sine wave oscillator. Yet another LFO is used as the clock for the sample-and-hold. This is prepatched in the Ants!.
1:18 Playing high notes, YEEEEEAHHH. Also, introducing the gater from the BD101, the speed of which is being controlled by random sample-and-hold from Ants! You might notice I am playing notes that aren't sounding. This is because you can't really play legato via MIDI with Ants!, you have to make sure you articulate each note separately. I play like crap so I mess up a lot. :)
1:37 Pulling cable with the triangle wave from the filter mixer section. This is now the input for the sawtooth wave from that oscillator, which is prepatched internally to the 2nd input of the filter.
1:56 Taking that darn triangle wave and putting it into the filter cv input for audio rate filter fm. This breaks the connection of the AD envelope to the filter but hey, such is life. Always breaking normalized connections, am I right?
2:25 No more filter fm, triangle wave patched back into the filter, so no more sawtooth either. Lots of random gating effects going on.
3:02 Pulling the cable from the square wave of the LFO and using the triangle wave instead. So no more rhythmic pulse, but you do get some flangery stuff happening.
3:34 Edit! Jump to where I set the filter resonance to max. This got pretty loud so I turned this part down. This kind of crap continues until the end where it fades out with some random gating noise.
The Ants! is a semi-modular synth with oscillators that don't play in tune over a wide range, but it does have four of them, and lots of other stuff. It's a fun synth if you don't mind the limited oscillator tracking.
The BD101 is a very lo-fi analog delay. With very short delay times you can get chorus and flanging effects, but if you are hoping for a clean longer delay, you won't find it. But what it does have is lots of modulation possibilities. It also has a tremolo/gate. And I went to the Koma website and just found out it is discontinued as of December 13, 2017. Huh."

Plankton Electronics Ants Patch #03 Arps & Waves
Published on Feb 15, 2019 dænkrø_ ElectriXity_
"All unnatural sounds come from the Plankton Electronics Ants. It is a constantly interrupted arpeggio patch with some white noise which comes and goes in waves, matching the sounds of the ocean.
In order to minimize time, I kept it simple this time. Just a patch and some footage from my favourite recreational place. Sorry if it`s all too cliché for you. I kinda like it.
Enjoy"

New Ants! Analog Modular Synthesizer From Plankton Electronics
Currently on kickstarter.

Ants! is:

Modular: connect the different parts and functions with standard 3.5mm pacth cords to create from classic to weird and new sounds.
Affordable: Ants! retail price will be 480€. Just a fraction of the cost of a basic eurorack modular system.
Compatible: 100% compatible with the eurorack voltage system and patching cords. It can be expanded it with most of the eurorack modules available in the market.
Portable: small size and desktop format.
Big: despite the small size Ants! have a lot of features which make it very powerful and versatile. Much more than a basic modular system.
Features:
4 Oscillators: yes, 4! V/Oct triangle-core oscillators. 2 of them switchable to LFO. Combining sinusoidal, triangle, saw, square and pulse with PWM. Play chords, detuned basses, octaved leads, drums, and frequency modulated sounds.
2 LFOs: 2 low frequency oscillators with triangle, square and pulse outputs.
VCF: switchable analog 12dB low-pass / 6db high-pass filter with resonance. At high input volumes it distort the signal. Self oscillating. It can sound crystal clear or really dirty.
2 A/R envelopes: 2 attack - release envelopes with manual and external controls. Working at different times.
Mixer: 3 input mixer. Mix oscillators, envelopes, noise or any other AC or DC signal.
2 VCAs: control the level of the signals with 2 analog VCAs.
Noise: a white noise source!
Sample and Hold: create random voltages, stepped sequences or dither your sounds or even your own voice.
AND gate: logic AND gate. Combine oscillators to create new waves, combine LFOs to create different patterns or mix your control signals to create complex modulations.
MIDI to CV: connect any MIDI keyboard, sequencer or computer and transform the digital signal to analog voltages for controlling the synth.
49 patch points, 28 potentiometers, 5 switches and 8 leds.
Normalized: Some connections are already made between some functions. Just connect your Midi or CV controller and play the synth without patching it. You can break any connection by plugging a patch cord to the normalized input."
