Threetom Modular Doppio soft saturator and limiter : Digital piano noodles #1 (Lode)

video upload by Threetom Modular

Doppio soft saturator and limiter : Digital piano noodles #2 (Tom)

via Threetom Modular

"The Threetom Modular Doppio is a compact stereo amplifier, drive, and soft limiter module. Doppio helps complex and dynamic stereo sounds to find their place in a modular synthesizer context, where signals are hot, and headroom is extremely limited. Doppio does this by implementing a compact, yet flexible, soft-knee limiter. The limiter is specifically designed for eurorack levels and avoids the need for unnecessary make-up gain, resulting in a lower noise floor.

Doppio offers three different gain settings (x1, x5, x21), and three different ratios (linear, drive, and limit). In addition to this Doppio has gain and volume knobs for more precise control. Different combinations of these settings cater to applications like saturating complex stereo signals without turning them into mush, end-of-chain limiting, and boosting line level signals to eurorack level, while still retaining enough oomph to also saturate them nicely. Finding the right settings is made easy by DOPPIO’s unique coffee-bean-shaped indicator lights.

Even though Doppio’s architecture is stereo, that doesn’t mean it has no uses on mono signals: Either process two mono signals with identical settings, or chain the two channels to form a two-stage high-gain mono drive. Finally, it’s important to note that Doppio is DC-coupled and can also be used to process CV signals.

In summary: Doppio is to your signals what a double espresso is to you – it makes you bigger and bolder – and you know you’re hooked when the withdrawal symptoms kick in."

Threetom Modular - Steve’s MS-22 dual VCF Released

This is a follow-up to this post where you'll find another demo.

"Today, ThreeTom Modular is releasing its 'Steve’s MS-22 dual VCF' module for eurorack.

The MS-22 is a dual voltage controlled filter, inspired by the classic Korg MS-20 filter, with an innovative modulation matrix and one of the highest function-to-hp ratios in the land of Eurorack.

The MS-22 contains two dedicated filter circuits, one low-pass and the other a high-pass. These are configured in series, the high-pass going into the low-pass. This configuration allows a unique duophonic fighting resonance behaviour. The cutoff frequencies of both filters can be CV’ed. Compared to most bread-and-butter MS-20 clones, the MS-22 is twice the amount of filter condensed down into half the package (4HP).

Furthermore, the MS-22 also has the following unique selling points :
The MS-22 has a unique modulation matrix that allows to configure many internal patches without using cables. Simply put, the modulation matrix (12-14) lets you route whatever modulation source you have connected to the ACV (auxiliary) input (e.g. an external envelope, LFO, S&H etc) to any or all of the following: HPF cutoff frequency, resonance amount, and input gain amount, either inverted or not.

The MS-22 has a unique link switch, which links the cutoff frequencies of the low-pass and high-pass filters in two different ratios. This creates two flavours of band-pass filters, of which the bandwidth can be tweaked and CV’ed. The switch itself also serves as an awesome performance effect as you can use it to create an instant drop. I demonstrate this near the end of this video. [see video below]

Steve's MS-22 is built to order in limited batches, the current batch consists of 10 units. Fully assembled modules are available for 225 EUR (excl. shipping). A limited number of DIY PCB+panel sets are available for 50 EUR (incl. shipping).

More information (videos, specs, manual) can be found on the product page : https://www.threetom.com/products/steves-ms22/
Orders can be placed over e-mail, as described here : https://www.threetom.com/ordering/

Threetom Doppio is now officially available! 🥳

Threetom Modular DOPPIO / clean amp, dirty drive and useful limiter / brief demo / first patches

video upload by BRiES

"DOPPIO by Threetom Modular is a stereo (or two channel) saturator/soft clipper that was designed to bring all the dirt where you want it but remain clean where you need it. You can use it to add huge amounts of noisefree gain to weak signals or to make a clean sound more saturated by using a selectable soft clipping circuit. The most useful feature and the one I will probably use most of the time is the soft clipping 'limit' setting, which gives the user the ability to set a safe master volume and bring in some saturation.

This video is not an extensive playthrough but rather a quick rundown of the features of this brand new Threetom Modular creation. There's a few patch examples in this video but I'm sure I'll make more uploads using DOPPIO when I run into things that benefit from a fresh caffeine shot. I'm confident this will be a great boost to my drumsection (pun intented)."

THREETOM modular / Modular & digital harmonica / Michael Claessens & Steve's MS-22

Published on Aug 11, 2019 Threetom Modular

"Ever wondered if a harmonica can be used to control a synth? The answer is yes!

Michael Claessens is a talented Belgian harmonica player who's interested in electronic music. We hooked up his digital harmonica to my modular system, featuring Steve's MS-22 dual VCF. This lead to an evening of modular fun, including this funky jazz improv we taped... Patch notes are in the description below!

Michael is playing a Lekholm DM48 Digital Chromatic Harmonica (https://www.lekholminstruments.com/). We connected the DM48 to the Endorphin.es Shuttle Control over USB host. We use two slightly detuned saw oscillators from the Intellijel Atlantis, which are mixed at 50% each and then sent into the input of Steve's MS-22 dual VCF. The DM48's breath MIDI CC is converted to a smoothed unipolar CV and routed in to the MS-22's FCV jack, modulating the cut-off frequency of the low-pass filter. The MS-22 is set with a high gain and moderate resonance. The high-pass filter is set at a low frequency, not affecting the signal. The output of Steve's MS-22 is then sent into a Zlob VniCursal VCA, modulated by the envelope of the Atlantis (triggered by the Shuttle Control). Reverb was added by means of the Tip Top Z-DSP with the Valhalla Reverb card."

"I’m pleased to announce the second edition of Belgian Modular Day, which will take place on the 15th of June in Ghent at the venue of Wisper on the site of Dok Noord.

During BMD I will be giving a talk titled “A wavefolder is not a wave folder”. This talk wil showcase how I use simulations in my design workflow. If there’s things you’d like me to specifically talk about regarding this topic (or another), please feel free to reply to this mail :)

I’m proud to contribute to Belgian Modular Day by sponsoring the performance of Dries Geusens at 20:40. Dries has a preference for self-built, analog modules, and live recordings. He approaches patches as “impressionistic snapshots of the temporary state of the system”.

Dries describes his latest release “Sakura Variations – 4 studies for modular synthesizer” as "4 pieces combined in 1 track serving beautiful sounddesign, fantastic harmonies, emotional-deep-calm layers, inspiring transitions, modular solos, energetic-relaxing-hypnotising rhythms and sequences with sometimes a jazzy flavor." My personal favourite track by Dries is “Variations on Sakura (live)”, a recording from his live performance during the previous edition of Belgian Modular Day.

You may also know Dries from the bands Nordmann, Knelpunt, and Elias, where he plays bass and synthesizer."

EURORACK VISIT #1 / Threetom Modular's workshop / MS-22 assembly

video upload by BRiES

"Join me in this documented visit to the workshop of Threetom Modular in a small town near Mechelen (Belgium).

Threetom Modular has gained worldwide recognition in the eurorack community with his feature packed STEVE'S MS-22. Tom tells us a little bit about how the filter came to be, who Steve is and how he managed to gain some support really quickly. He also shows us the complete assembly process of his MS-22 and tells us all about the (custom) tools he uses to build them.

A lot of sweat was produced while shooting the video, and I will be back to document the callibration and quality control in Threetom's audio laboratory soon, as well as having a chat about his new upcoming module.

I want to genuinely thank Tom for going along on a ride of which we both didn't exactly know where we would end up. I'm very satisfied with how the audio and video came out, and I'm even more pleased with the fun and insightful content we were able to create together."

Modular Christmas Carols [Steve's MS-22, Twin Waves MkII, Chainsaw, Quadigy, Ensemble Oscillator...]

video upload by Threetom Modular

"PATCH NOTES BELOW! :)

SEASON GREETING TO EVERYONE IN THE MODULAR COMMUNITY FROM THREETOM MODULAR! I HOPE YOU HAVE THE MOST EXCELLENT HOLIDAYS AND I WISH YOU THE BEST FOR THE NEW YEAR! :D

* Voice 1 (Bass): A mix of a triangle wave and a square sub coming from Klavis Twin Waves MkII into Steve's MS-22. Low pass cutoff is modulated by the Klavis Quadigy envelope generator.

* Voice 2 (Lead): A supersaw coming from Klavis Twin Waves MkII going into Steve's MS-22. Low pass cutoff frequency is modulated by the TipTop Z8000 sequencer, asynchronously clocked by the Doepfer A-145-4 quad LFO.

* Voice 3 (Pad): Acidrain Chainsaw into a stereo pair of Steve's MS-22 filters. The Chainsaw's waveshape is slowly modulated by the Doepfer A-145-4 quad LFO.

* Voice 4 (Bells/counterpoint): 4MS Ensemble Oscillator, manually tweaked throughout the sequence.

All voices go through the ZlobVnicursal VCA, into the Befaco Hexmix and Hexpander combo. The Hexpander sends an effects mix into the Happy Nerding FXaid for reverb (which is then mixed back in through the Hexpanders effect return).

This performance was sequenced by Ableton Live and the Endorphin.es Shuttle control (outside of the shot), based on the midi file 'A Christmas Carol Suite' by Richard Ian (you can find it here: http://midkar.com/holidays/christmas/... )"

Threetom Modular MIXING FLASK

See this previous post for a demo.

"The Threetom Modular 'Mixing Flask' is a utility mixer offering mix-bus limiting and a cornucopia of indicator lights integrated behind a unique chemical lab-inspired front panel.

I designed Mixing Flask as a solution to my main three gripes with conventional utility mixers:

Mixing too hot is too easy, leading to hard clipping on the mix-bus. And even when there’s an indicator light to warn you when this is happening, there are no features to actively prevent it.

Utility mixers usually only offer unity gain, so when you have a weak input signal (like a MTM Radio Music), you’re out of luck

They’re nauseatingly boring

Mixing Flask provides solutions to these annoyances in the following ways:

I’ve implemented a soft-clipping limiting circuit on the mix-bus (inspired by Doppio). The highest setting prevents the mix-bus from hard clipping altogether in favor of warm saturation.

All inputs have a gain of +6dB allowing you to better equalize between volumes while maintaining a hot mix-bus output

The myriad of indicator lights and front-panel graphics make you feel like a mad scientist in your modular chemical lab. I bet you won’t find another utility mixer that makes mixing more exciting than Mixing Flask!

Mixing Flask will be available soon after Dutch Modular Fest, both from my retailers and in my own shop!"

See the dealers on the right for availability.

EURORACK VISIT #2 / Threetom Modular's Audio Laboratory / diagnostics and coffeebeans

video upload by BRiES

"In this video I once again take you with me to the place where Threetom Modular gear is conceptualized and born. Tom shows us the calibration and quality control workflow in his Audio Lab while giving us some insight in the tools he uses (links below). We talk about his recent ventures with retailers and about the next module in his line-up called Doppio. After being served a nice cappucino I ask Tom if he has some tips (concepts to study) for people that want to get into designing and building (eurorack) synthesizers, which he answers elaborately. There's a comprehensive list towards the bottom of this description including links to interesting tutorials and practical examples.

As most of you will probably know Tom designs and builds synthesizer modules for the eurorack environment. He gained worldwide recognition with his 4hp filtermodule called Steve's MS-22 (or MS-22 for short) based around the sound of the famous Korg MS-20 semi-modular synth. In part one of the documentary we witnessed how Tom builds a few of these modules from scratch while we talk about his favourite tools, his background as an (optical) engineer and some of his custom jigs. You can watch that video by following this link:" [posted here]
