DX5 Playing a-ha "Take on Me"

Published on Jun 1, 2020 DX5

"Covering one of the greatest synthpop songs ever. It is said the main lead was made with a Yamaha DX synth layered with some other. I realized that the DX7 IIFD only does the job.

Gear used:
Yamaha DX7 IIFD
Roland JX-8P
Roland JP-8000

Backtrack recorded on Pro Tools, using Yamaha DX7 /DX7 IIFD massively (Bass 1 preset across the song).

Composed by Magne Furuholmen / Morten Harket / Paul Waaktaar-Savoy.

Performed here by DX5 Jose María Bará."

Blinds & JP-BOOO for Korg Prologue - Minilogue XD - NTS-1 - Edouard Digital | SynthFest 2020

Published on May 28, 2020 SynthFest France

https://edouard.digital

Blinds

"Apply PWM to any waveform!

The KORG prologue, their flagship analog synthesizer, has been the first to offer customizable digital oscillators and effects in addition to the analog ones, in Summer 2018. Then in Winter 2019, KORG has introduced the minilogue xd, bringing the same excellent features to the more affordable minilogue. Then in Winter 2020, KORG has introduced the Nu:Tekt NTS-1, an affordable and portable DIY one-voice version of the -logue family’s digital oscillator. Using the Sound Librarian software, you can upload new digital oscillators to those devices and multiply their possibilities.

MULTI Engine Type Display
While many great sounds come from the classic waveforms available in analog oscillators (the sawtooth, the triangle, the square), they are always the same and are mostly static. Digital oscillators have the power to enhance your sounds, adding interesting harmonics and textures, and even be the centerpiece."

JP-BOOO / JP-8000 Supersaw Oscillator

"Amazingly phat and powerful oscillator for the prologue, minilogue xd & NTS-1

In early 1997, Roland introduced a cult synthesizer, that was seen as a modern digital incarnation of the classic analog Jupiter-8 from 1981. Offering a very intuitive interface with 40 knobs and sliders, and a large breadth of sounds, it soon became a classic itself as it was used by The Prodigy, Nicky Romero, Depeche Mode, Gary Numan, BT, Paul Van Dyk, Faithless, Dash Berlin, Pet Shop Boys, The Crystal Method, Orbital, Ken Ishii, Vince Clarke, Goldie, Dave Holmes, Groove Armada, ATB, Überzone, Ferry Corsten, Scooter, Konflict, William Orbit and Garbage.

Though it was a virtual analog—or analog modeling—synthesizer, it was digital at heart, with a lot of grit that made it perfect for all styles of electronic music. But there is a more specific reason why it became so famous and appreciated: the first of its two oscillators offered a revolutionary brand new mode, named Super Saw. Instead of the classic sawtooth, square and triangle waveforms, the oscillator would generate seven detuned sawtooth waves played at the same time on each of the voices. It allowed the creation of both harsh “fat” leads when used raw, and smooth “creamy” pads when filtered, and it quickly became the defining sound of the trance genre, and a staple of electro, techno, drum’n’bass and house....

Not everyone can buy that vintage synthesizer, as they run in the range of $700 to $900. Adding JP‑BOOO 👻 to your KORG prologue, minilogue xd or NTS-1 is incomparably easier and more affordable!

On both the prologue and the minilogue xd, you can use the Shape knob to change the Detune and Shift+Shape to change the Mix. On the NTS-1, you can use the A knob to change the Detune and the B knob to change the Mix.

Thanks to JP‑BOOO 👻, you can now use a realistic oscillator inspired by the Super Saw, along with the analog oscillators and filters of the prologue and minilogue xd, and with your favorite effects and custom modulations on the prologue, minilogue xd and NTS-1.

If you have a prologue 8, you will have 8 voices, as many as there are on that cult synthesizer, and if you have a prologue 16, you will have twice as more!"

Division 6 CEM3349 VCO oscillator sweep, Malekko Richter Oscillator II sequenced by Division 6 Dual Mini Sequencer and Tiptop BD808 and SD808 triggered by Z8000 Matrix Sequencer/Programmer. Noisering modding the Oscillator II for a little added grit. All through Mattson Mini Modular JP VCF and finally TC Electronic M300. Peeeeew!!! "Fifth Avenue Menace" - Yamaha RS-7000 + Prophet 6 + Prophet REV2 + Korg MS-2000

Published on Apr 15, 2020 Patrick Manderson

"Recorded live late afternoon on April 5th, 2020 using a Yamaha RS-7000 MIDI Sequencer and a room full of MIDI synthesizers & drum machines. The sequencer was painstakingly programmed to play all instruments as well as automations, modulation, volume & patch changes. The instruments ran through 3 mixers and a rack of compressors and outboard effects. All parts were mixed and recorded in a single take. This video was recorded and edited afterwards.

The initial inspiration started with the Korg DDD-5, Korg EX-8000 & Sequential Prophet 6. Later the vox parts were developed on the Korg MS 2000. The Korg Radias would likely do a better job making voice-like sounds but the MS 2000 was more convenient in the early stages. Instead the Radias provided a custom kit of percussive noises, sweeps and plucks.

The Korg EX-8000 is a beautiful sounding synth, unfortunately one patch was used to play bass and nothing else. However the pitch wheel was assigned filter cutoff - giving it the right texture during parts of the music. Art Tube Channel provided its EQ and compression.

The Prophet 6 plays the dominate piano progression in the first half and later takes a minor role filling in space once the intensity kicks in. This patch was very expressive with both envelopes mapped to velocity.

The Korg Minilogue has double-duty with the main melody and layering the bass parts in the first half. Its filter has lots of sweet spots and can be dialed in just right when inspired.

Sequential REV2 and Roland JP-8080 are quite busy filling in various swells, stringy pads, portamentos and spacy atmospherics throughout. The REV2's deep programming allows it to fit perfectly where it needs to.

The BassStation plays a duet of solos in the last 3rd along with Minilogue and MS 2000. Its programming is very flixible for solos using mod wheel, pitch and channel aftertouch. The multi-mode filter give you lots of flexibility to dial in the right sound. A vintage 8bit digital delay added epic sound to the most important parts of the BassStation.

The Roland JX-03 has a minor role doubling a channel with the Radias however the Roland SH-01A is more prominent role filling in necessary chords and melodies.

The Electribe ESX-1 wasn't originally part of this music until later when a need for more punchier beats for the second half.

Accoustic drums came from an expansion card installed in the Roland XV-5080. It was easy to male good use of the multitimbral key-range mapping with a number of arpeggiated plucks drowned in reverb and delay.

The Radias provided additional distorted noises thru bit-reductions at the very end.

Additional reverbs were generated by the Ensooniq DP/4. The Lexicon MX200 pitch shifted the kick and snare on the DDD-5 while the Quadraverb engulfed the drum bus with gated reverb.

All MIDI ran through the MOTU MIDI Timepiece MTP AV.

The camera is an old Panasonic Lumix LX7 point and shoot. Editing was done in Davinci Resolve."

Roland Jupiter-4 Vintage 1979 Sounds & Presets | HQ DEMO & TUTORIAL

Published on Apr 11, 2020 Andy Whitmore

"This video demonstrates the sound and features of the Roland Jupiter-4 analog synthesizer. Enjoy!

The Roland Jupiter-4 is a very strong, agressive, massive, but also sweet sounding synth. The sound is really incredible for only one VCO with one Sub-VCO. In this this Demo you will listen to this wide range of sounds.

The Roland JP-4 came out 1978, mine is from Nov. 1979 with the later filter board.

The great features of the JP-4 are:
- extremely fast envelopes
- ultra fast LFO and also slow LFO to get FM sounds and very slow filter sweeps as well
- fantastic sounding filter with ultra fat and sweet self resonance
- stereo chorus, not so strong like in the Juno 6/60, but very musical
- nice arpeggiator with triggering by a sequencer or drum machine
- random S/H filter modulation
- fantastic versatile bender board
- you can trim the 4 voices and slightly detune them on the back of the unit to achieve a really fat sound
- polyphonic portamento

Filmed at https://www.greystokestudio.com in West London using an Apple iPhone 11 Max 512gb"

$11,500 "BIG BLUE" Roland JP-8000 Synthesizer w/ Blue LEDs

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. JP-8000 Master Restoration and Blue LED Mod (FULL TECHNICAL VIDEO) シンセサイザー復元

Published on Feb 28, 2020 dasurflife

via this auction

"Straight from 1997, this is the turn key Roland JP-8000 of your dreams. Surely it must be the coolest, resto-mod worldwide and ready for a choice studio. Sitting at it sparks immense inspiration and pleasure from its buttery action, even voicing, and electric blue lighting! It’s been a four-month restoration journey which began on Nov.1, 2019, getting it fine-tuned for its next life venture and I can assure you it is ready to be a landmark of your setup, impressing anyone lucky enough to tickle its ivories. This is a totally unique, one of a kind, JP-8000. I’ve never seen another JP-8000 with all blue led lights and display screen, let alone one masterfully restored to this extent.

Anyone who does a little research on used units knows that the JP-8000 has now reached its “end of life” phase. There are many of these units selling online, primarily from Japan, with low or uneven volume coming from the audio outputs at the rear (from defective capacitors), no audio output at all, broken or uneven keys, memory damaged battery failure, popping sounds when the faders or rotary potentiometers are moved, clacking key beds, yellowed keys, push-buttons that don’t work, etc. At a bare minimum every used JP-8000 really needs all of the polar electrolytic capacitors replaced, because they have a pre-designed life expectancy that has since expired. It isn’t just some used units that need new caps, they ALL need them.

This project was aimed at fully restoring the keyboard action and circuit internals with no expenses spared to provide new life to a dying legacy. All of the wearable items were refreshed. Another goal was making something totally unique and different from all other JP-8000 units. With the upgraded components used this keyboard should last 50 years without needing repairs if it’s covered when not in use, isn’t abused, dropped, or spilled on. This is the definitive JP-8000 resto-mod!

Notification for international buyers: This is a genuine 117VAC unit originally sold in North America. If you would like this unit converted to 100VAC or 230VAC before shipping it to you I can do so. It’s as simple as re-soldering 1 wire on the internal multi-primary coil transformer. No other modifications are necessary as the 100V, 117V, and 230V models all use the same exact power supply boards, filtering, and capacitor sizes. The only change you will need is a power cable with the correct plug type for your wall receptacle. I can supply the power cable for you or can refer you to where you can buy one post-sale. This means you can use the keyboard in your country without needing an external transformer! This synthesizer is truly plug-and-play for any buyer worldwide."

Quarantine Sessions 1 - dark ambient live jam

Published on Mar 16, 2020 Ran Kirlian

"Due to Spanish covid-19 quarantine I'm having some extra time to play with my synthesizers. This live jam started as a simple sound check, then evolved to a long track and finally became an improvissed 6 track live act, just for fun. It was recorded in one take with no overdubs and postproduction additions (so having some mistakes here and there).

It was recoded on my cell phone, which has a time limit of 30 minutes on video recording. It took me like 7 mins to notice that it was not recording before I started it again, so there is a "not live image" gap that I filled with black and white footage from the same session that it's obviously not synced to the audio.

Track list:

Part 1 - 00:00
Part 2 - 04:24
Part 3 - 23:13
Part 4 - 38:02
Part 5 - 45:50
Part 6 - 57:29

Tools:
- Minimal Eurorack System: noises, drones & random flavours
- Access Virus Indigo + Roland JP 8080 + Waldorf XT: drones, pads and lead
- Access Virus Indigo 2 (Redback): drones and lead on part 5
- TC Electronic MS3000: reverb

Jupiter-X vs. System-8: The Jupiter-8 Engine *No Talking*

Published on Mar 8, 2020 MR TUNA Music

"Its the showdown you've been waiting for! Two amazing synths, both vying for the number one spot of King Jupiter Clone..... but which will reign supreme? How will we even know without a real JP-8 to compare against? Perhaps this is all in vain. Perhaps we've all wasted our time. But maybe, just maybe, the debate between these two synthesizers is more than an age old question... more than the sum of their sounds. Is it wrong to love two synths? Is it beautiful to appreciate their differences? Or to stare into the mirror and see not yourself, but all of your possibilities and potentials like a trillion different realities folding onto each other like thin sheets of metal forming a single blade??

This is Jupiter vs. Jupiter. Or IS IT????"

The $15,000 Supersaw

Published on Feb 9, 2020 Marshal Arnold

"Tonight I set up 6 synthesizers I own with that Epic Trance style Supersaw sound. When I was making the video I realized that I paid just over $15000 USD in total for these synthesizers! Now that's a Super Expensive Supersaw!

I've set some limits on myself sound design wise so that you can hear what each synth sounds like at a base level when it comes to Supersaws. This way you can perhaps hear some differences on a level playing field not colored by built-in effects or more that the original 7 sawtooth waves in the original JP-8000.

I demo each synth quickly, then I play 4 of the 6 to give a taste minus the Moog One and the Roland Cloud System 8, then for the big one I play all 6 synthesizers at once for that $15000 Supersaw!

Synths used for this video are:

Roland JP-8000
Roland V-Synth GT
RolandCloud System 8
Waldorf Kyra
Access Virus TI2
Moog One

Let me know what you think of the $15,000 Supersaw!"

Reminds me of the White Album x 100:

That "Bob's" signature on the bottom right reminded me of the Bob signature in the BMF raffle that just went up. Fun coincidences.

The synths:

SATURN-4 based on the Roland Jupiter-4

"The first under the moniker and the first self-contained polyphonic synth under the brand, this synth is a 4-voice poly from 1978. The voices can be synced to create a meaty 4-osc monophonic sound and has been famously used by acts such as the Cars, Duran Duran, Simple Minds, Vangelis and Meat Beat Manifesto. For this synth we deeply-sampled the oscillator section to replicate the hardware use as closely as possible with samples. Every position of the oscillator section was multisampled, and every sound in the library was captured with and without the hardware unison and hardware ensemble effect providing an incredibly rich and authentic sound."

SATURN-6 based on the Roland Jupiter-6

"A true vintage gem, this 12-oscillator, 6-voice analog polysynth can create massively thick sounds - a pad and drone dream machine. Debuting in 1983 this instrument has been famously used by The Prodigy, Crystal Method, Chemical Brothers, Devo, Tangerine Dream, Human League and Orbital among others. A comprehensive sampling provides two unison settings for all presets allowing you to create a wide variety of sounds from modulating drones to ripping basses."

SATURN-8 based on the Roland Jupiter-8

"One of the most iconic analog synthesizers ever produced, and the brands flagship, this featured synth sports 16-oscillators on 8-voices with cross-modulation, sync, PWM, an HPF, variable LPF, an LFO and two EGs. An incredible polyphonic unison mode allows all 16 oscillators to be stacked on a single note! We captured everything, with and without the hardware unison, giving you an incredible catalog of powerful analog sounds."

MERCURY-80 based on the Roland MKS-80

"The expanded rackmount brother of our Saturn-6, this 16-oscillator 8-voice super-synth came equipped with fully-analog VCOs and a low boost circuit. Able to replicate many sounds of its keyboard counterpart, this synth wasn't simply a rackmount adaptation but a unique instrument with its own character and strengths. Due to its friendly form factor these were in high demand in the day, popular on tours but equally potent in the studio, used extensively by acts like Tangerine Dream, Herbie Hancock, Vangelis, John Carpenter, Talk Talk, and Madonna. We captured every sound with and without the hardware unison including many unique and inspiring tones."
