NEW Doepfer A-155-2 Mini Analog Sequencer & Friends - First Try of the 12HP #Eurorack Module

video upload by DreamsOfWires

"First play with the new Doepfer A-155-2 Mini Analog Sequencer, with A-111-5 Mini Synthesizer Voice, AJH Synth Tap Tempo VC-LFO and Chance Delay, along with a MiniMod voice for backing drone. The Mini Sequencer is a real 8-stage analogue step-sequencer, but with a few digital tricks up it's sleeve. For example, whilst it doesn't feature an internal clock or quantizer, it does allow you to save and recall step settings (except frequency), so you can switch between multiple behaviours simultaneously - very useful for live use. I've not tried this yet, but maybe in a follow-up video. Aside from that, there's step mute buttons, multiple play directions, 1-8 step pattern lengths, x2/x3/x4 ratcheting on each step, 1V/2V/4V CV range selector, and manual or CV reset. Not bad for 12hp. Here I'm using the Tap Tempo VC-LFO as the master clock, but also to produce random stepped voltages (like sample & hold) to modulate the Mini Synth's filter per step. This clock is then passed to the Chance Delay module, which restricts the probability of a gate or clock pulse passing through it, either manually controlled or by CV - more often this might be placed after the sequencer, so that steps (in this case notes) can be randomly skipped, whilst retaining the length of the sequence. However, I'm using it before the sequencer, so that all steps will be played in order (apart from when the sequencer is in random mode), but will do so across random steps - an effect I find quite satisfying sometimes. The rest of the patch is pretty self-explanatory if you have subtitles enabled. It was just an initial experiment really. More to come.

DISCLAIMER: This is NOT a paid video, I purchased the module myself, and no brand used in this video had any prior involvement or knowledge of me making it.

The Doepfer A-155-2 is a Miniature Analog Sequencer module that packs huge creative potential in a compact package. Using the A-155-2 is simple, yet a deep set of functionalities make it perfect for all things from basic repeating patterns to unique ratcheting and evolving sequences. Eight step positions each feature a knob for setting CV value, as well as an illuminated button to manually set gates on each step. At the bottom of the panel, outputs for a single pair of CV and gate signals are available, as well as clock and reset inputs. Along with a simple three-position switch for CV range, the A-155-2 offers a streamlined way to create driving patterns in any patch.

Beyond simple and unidirectional patterns, the A-155-2 enables plenty of creative options for crafting unique and lively sequences. Using the programming switch in combination with the step buttons, you can easily set up ratcheting rhythms for multiple gates per step, perfect for extending a melodic idea with stuttering syncopations. Additionally, sequence length and direction can be adjusted, allowing you to create longer patterns, evoke odd-time signatures, and experiment with random step playback. Finally, an eight-slot preset system is onboard, giving you the capability to store and recall your patterns between sessions and shows. Whether implemented as the brain of a small system or ticking along in a grand chorus of clocked control, the Doepfer A-155-2 Mini Analog Sequencer is a small triumph of modulatory movement for any case.

Meet You At The Top

video upload by davidryle

"A two part piece. Both are pitch voltage quantization controlled from the ACL Sinfonion. I switch presets through the first part from preset 1 - 4 and in the second half I leave it on preset 5.

The Sinfonion chord section is sending pitch quantization to the Doepfer A-111-4 quad VCO and A-105-4 quad SSI filter. The mixer is the Corsynth T-Mixer. The Empress reverb in Ambient Swell green mode is used.

The opening voice is Channel 2 of the Sinfonion and is sent to the Dotcom Q206 with the Dove D502 in BP mode P1, then an SSL Serge Resonant EQ and finally the Strymon Blue Sky.

A counter voice is the Channel 3 quantizer to a pair of Synthetic Sound Labs TZ-VC Oscillators to the Oakley VC-SVF in BP mode. The audio is routed through a Moon 517S high pass filter to roll of the lower mid tones. I used an instance of Relab Development's LX480 classic Lexicon reverb. This same voice is used for the main melodic part in the second section.

The Channel 1 of the Sinfonion is to the bass voice which is the Dotcom Q169 Oscillator++ and Grove Audio G294A ladder filter.

The Sinfonion arpeggiator part is to the STG oscillator duet and the Dove D501 2069 filter. The signal is sent through the Modcan 73B dual delay. In the first section this voice is solo, but in the second section I added in a duplicated run of the MosLab 901/904A through a different envelope which is timed a bit more sparse and sent through the second section of the 73B delay.

Most of my time was spent mixing levels and changing the timing of the SSL Hagiwo Geo-Gruvn euclidean sequencer. The clock timing was controlled by row 3 of the Moon 563 trigger seq. I used two different memory presets on the Geo-Gruvn for each section. These timings were used for the gate controls to the SSL Octal VCA, CV-8 Breakout and AD/AR Expander. The eight channel vca handled four of the voices. Very cool array of modules.

I also sent and effort to control the timing of the STG Voltage Mini Store's timing with row 2 of the 563. The right VMS is used for the Root control to the Sinfonion. The faster moving left VMS is to the arpeggiator of the Sinfonion.

The Sinfonion is using various cv's from the Q960 step sequencers to affect the chord spread and note selections. Also an LFO is used to affect the pre-transpose of the chord section.

A convoluted patch using the Lower West Side Studios CGS88 triple switch, the Dove D900 sequencer and three voltage sources to send control voltage to the transpose on the Sinfonion. I used the Moon 564 trigger stage 1 to turn this on and off by hand when needed.

The final clangorous opening and ending patch voice was the Mutable Instruments Rings through the Behringer Bode Frequency Shifter clone and the Encore Frequency Shifter, and on through the Tip Top Z-DSP signal processor running Halls of Valhalla reverb (Niflheim preset). It was also the midway noise rush background sound where the sections changed. These were added later in Cubase and triggered by hand.

The sections were performed at once live to Cubase and video edited in Final Cut Pro."

Remembering Dave Smith: A Prophet-5 Story

video upload by INHALTVIDEO

"Today is the anniversary of Dave Smith’s passing, and every year on this day, I find myself reflecting not just on the incredible instruments he created, but on the friendship we built and the tremendous support he gave me in my career.

One of the projects I’m most proud to have been a part of is the reissue of the Prophet-5. I had the honor of contributing to its development, from long conversations and persistent hassling about voice allocation to the privilege of crafting patches for the final instrument. One of those patches—my take on the true essence of the Prophet-5—became the very first one you hear when you turn it on: patch 111.

To have my work live inside such an iconic synthesizer, and to have shared time and ideas with the man who brought it to life—not once, but multiple times—is something I’ll always carry with deep gratitude. Thank you, Dave, for your friendship, your brilliance, and your contributions to music that ripple out endlessly."

X-Plorations Vol 2 - Sequential Prophet X - Patches 1 to 32 (of 128)

video upload by GEOSynths

"Out Soon

So, it's been almost 4 Years since I worked on the Prophet X and then released X-Plorations Vol 1. While it does have some amazing Factory Samples from 8DIO, which i have used, I was a little disappointed in the Synth Samples, so I sampled 14 of my Synths, just the Oscillators wide open over many Octaves and EVERY note.

Of course, the Prophet X has onboard VA Oscillators and when combined with the Samples, you can make the Prophet X sound amazing. As mentioned, for Volume 1 I sampled 14 of my Synths to make 43 Sample Sets, these are the Synths I used.

Moog Grandmother
Behringer VC-340
Dreadbox Erebus
Moog Sirin
Roland SE-02
Moog One
Behringer CAT
Novation BS2
Moog Matriarch
Moog Subsequent 37
Dreadbox Typhon
Analogue Solutions Leipzig-S
Cheetah MS6
Sequential OB6

With Vol 2, I have extended this with 17 more Sample Sets from my Synth Collection, again EVERY note over multiple octaves. This time, some have FM Modulations and Wavetable changes captured, using the following:

Majella Audio Implexus
Analogue Solutions Fusebox
Behringer 2600
Arturia Polybrute
Novation Summit (Wavetables)
Nord Wave 2 (Linear FM)

Flux Vol 1 - Waldorf Quantum/Iridium - Patches 1 to 25

video upload by GEOSynths

"Out Soon.

So, I finally got round to making some Patches for the brilliant Waldorf Quantum and Iridium. While the Quantum has an Analog Filter, all of the patches use the Digital Filters only for compatibility with the Iridium.

There's 50 Patches in total for Flux Vol 1, however many use both Layers as well as using all the Synthesis Engines available. It does use some of my Custom Samples, which are Raw Oscillator Multi-Samples from my Moog One, Polybrute, Matriarch and many more. It also uses some of the Factory Sample Content.

The Sounds are very Atmospheric in the main, with a few other Categories of Sounds in the Bank, though Pads, Strings, Evolving and Motion Sounds, which is what I think the strengths are of this Synth.

I've turned "Off" the 'Bass Boost' and used the EQ FX instead as there's more control. Mod Wheel is assigned for all to multiple destinations for many Patches."

Moog Mavis, Prophet 5, AJH Synth large Eurorack modular synth Performance

video upload by DreamsOfWires

"Performance using Eurorack and Sequential Prophet 5. The modular consists mostly of AJH Synth modules (list below), a Doepfer Mini Synthesizer Voice and a Moog Mavis.
This is a slightly simplified section of something I've been recording for Bandcamp. A reflection of the present with an ear to the past. It'll be released on Bandcamp soon if I'm satisfied with it once it's finished, no promises.
I wanted to build a piece around a simple, analogue, un-quantised sequencer. The manual scaling and slowing of the sequence was inspired by Tangerine Dream's 'Phaedra', which begins rather chaotically, before the sequence morphs and slows to become more melodic. A fascinating piece of music and synth tweaking from the early 70's.
The ambient drone sounds and polyphonic Prophet presets (which I also created) are more inspired by the movie and television soundtracks of the past, if anything, or at least in my imagination of them.
This was entirely recorded within the Eurorack modular system - the mix isn't the best, but I like creating something in this way, set in stone, frozen in time, warts and all, perfectly imperfect.
My music: https://tomorrowthecure.bandcamp.com

Modules used:
Sounds - 2 full AJH Synth MiniMod voices (equivalent of a Minimoog), with 1 using a Sonic XV instead of a Transistor Ladder Filter. Additionally, a Fixed Filter Bank 914, Wave Swarm, Tone Science Triple Cross, Precision Voltages, Ring SM and CV Mix (for scaling the sequence), Dual LFO, 2x Muting Mxer. Doepfer A-111-5 (same voice as a Dark Energy), Moog Mavis, and Music Thing Modular Radio Music (Japanese funeral ceremony sample).
Sequencer - Erica Synths Sequential Switch with CV Expander.
Effects - Happy Nerding FX Aid (master reverb), ALM Busy Circuits MFX (Mavis drone reverb), XAOC Devices Sarajewo analog 'bucket brigade' delay.
Mixing - Cosmotronic Cosmix.
Audio recorder - Expert Sleepers Disting Mk4 (as WAV recorder)."

Zerosum Inertia - TVM23

video upload by NOISEBUG

"Brian @ Zerosum Inertia has really outdone himself this time. We will start calling him the Duke of Distortion around here. In the video we spice up a stock Korg Drumlogue beat with both channels of the TVM23. In the first half I am modulating it with the a-118-2 random signal clocked by the a-119 gate out. In the second half I am modulating it with a triangle wave from the a-111-3 at LFO and audio rates. Enjoy!"

via Noisebug

The TVM23 is an all analog audio processor for eurorack format synthesizers.

38mm rear depth.

18HP wide.

200 mA +12 average load, 500 mA on first power up.

50 mA -12.

The TVM23 is a dual processor with two separate channels independent from each other.

The heart of both channels is a 6CB6 pentode. Two matched 6CB6 pentodes are used.

The left channel utilizes distortion and feedback to create harmonic trills and waveshaping effects.

A genuine 5C1 vactrol is used for Control Voltage of the feedback.

The bottom left row of jacks are for the left channel.

The left knob is for the feedback, the center left knob is for the gain.

This channel seems to have more obvious effects when an audio source higher in frequency is inserted.

Hit the transpose up on your sequence a few times to see what I mean.

The right channel is a loud but clean tube VCA suitable for sweetening audio signals and processing

dynamic depth.

The 6CB6 is used for both audio processing as well as Control Voltage processing for this channel.

The bottom right row of jacks is for the right channel.

The right knob is the gain control for this tube VCA.

While most “VCA” modules are Voltage Controlled Attenuators, this is a Voltage Controlled Amplifier.

Your signal will come out louder than before when patching into this channel.

The left channel greatly benefits from having attenuation before entering.

Even better is placing a VCA before it to have dynamic depth control of the waveshaping and distortion effects.

You can use the right channel for this.

But most likely you already have a traditional VCA in your system so you can use what you have for attenuation/VCA duties before entering the left channel,

then patch the left channel into the right channel for it’s gain and audio sweetening effects.

I happen to have multiple tube VCA’s so I patch a tube VCA before the left channel and after the left channel for maximum character and saturation effects.

A lot of other people do too.

Whichever VCA you choose to use before entering the left channel you will be greatly rewarded with dynamic continuously variable distortion effects as the feedback loop is always changing.

Even before you insert control voltage into the feedback amount, the feedback loop is sensitive to the amount of signal feeding it and produces unique glitchy trills that sound like a video game.

Modulate the amount of attenuation with that VCA that goes before the left channel with a random voltage, sequencer, arpeggiator, envelope, sweeping LFO or clocked rhythmic gates.

I really like the NoiseRing and Wogglebug or sequence that is feeding my oscillators for this task.

For the right channel VCA a postive control voltage source from 1-10 volts with an onboard attenuator and variable response curve is recommended. Maths works great for this.

The VCA doesn’t use an exponential VCA chip or OTA like most other VCA’s, so the response curve is not a guaranteed linear or expo response and it is different with every tube used.

That is why it best to use a modulator with a variable curve and attenuation to dial in the best response.

It is recommended to start with all the knobs at full clockwise/around 5 o’clock and then work the knobs counter clockwise as you listen to the incoming audio source.

3-5 o’clock seems to be about the sweet spot for all the knobs but you will find hidden sounds everywhere.

The center knob controls gain, so if you bring it back too far counter clockwise that will attenuate the signal completely and no sound will come out. Center knob is usually best in the 3-5’oclock range.

The left and center knobs are part of a feedback network, so the settings between the two interact and manipulate the behavior and sound of the whole left channel in a symbiotic relationship.

They both effect the pitch effects that come from the feedback sounds.

"The Roland Boutique lineup expands with new modules based on the vintage JX-8P and JD-800 synthesizers

Los Angeles, CA, November 9, 2021 — Roland announces the JX-08 and JD-08 Sound Modules, the latest additions to the award-winning Roland Boutique lineup of compact electronic instruments. The JX-08 offers a scaled-down recreation of the JX-8P, one of the last analog synthesizers produced by Roland in the 1980s and a highly sought-after piece for vintage synth fans. The JD-08 is a compact reproduction of Roland’s JD-800 synthesizer, an influential digital instrument from the early 1990s loved for its complex, gleaming sound and comprehensive hands-on control.

Essence Vol 1 - Patches 97 to 128 - Sequential Take 5

video upload by GEOSynths

"Out Now - https://www.geosynths.com/take5

I love this little Synth, it has such a great Sound Engine to it. I wasn't going to bother with it as I've done quite a lot of Patches for Sequential Synths, however I decided it would be worth trying at least and the the next thing I knew, I'd made a load of Sounds!

In Essence vol 1 there is 128 Patches covering Pads and Motion Sounds...Of course, that's what I do best! Also cutting Leads and Bass, Poly and traditional Sounds. The combination of VCO/VCF/Mod Matrix is quite spectacular on the Take 5 and I've been creating textures which I've not heard before on Sequential Synths.

Here are the last 32 demonstrated, hope you enjoy them.
