Korg USA Mourns the Passing of Jack Hotop, Legendary Sound Designer and Innovator

Some sad news in via Korg.

You can find posts on MATRIXSYNTH featuring Jack Hotop here for a look back on his influence in the synthesizer community. The first post was a simple pic back in 2006.

Press release from Korg follows:

Over a 40-Year Career, the Influential Synthesist and Accomplished Touring Keyboardist Shaped the Sonic Architecture of More Than 100 Landmark Instruments, Including the Historic M1 Workstation

MELVILLE, N.Y. - Korg USA announces with deep sadness the passing of longtime employee, celebrated sound designer, and musical instrument industry icon Jack Hotop. Joining Korg USA (then Unicord) in 1983, Hotop started as Senior Voicing Manager and spent over four decades driving the development, sound design, programming, voicing, and product demonstrations for more than 100 Korg products. As a pioneering engineer and exceptionally skilled performer, his extensive contributions helped guide the evolution of synthesizers and digital workstations from the early 1980s through the modern era, leaving an indelible imprint on instruments used by musicians around the world and for generations to come.

Hotop’s foundational expertise was anchored in a rigorous musical and technical background. Raised in a musical family, he began piano lessons at age seven, inspired by his father, a musician featured on several Broadway cast recordings, and numerous pianists on his mother’s side. By age 14, he was actively performing in local bands on a Gibson 101 organ. He pursued formal training at the Berklee College of Music, majoring in arranging, composition, and accompaniment, before expanding into emerging music technology at the Boston School of Electronic Music under Roger Powell. It was there that Hotop established his core synthesis fundamentals using early hardware including the ARP Odyssey, 2600, 2500, and EMS Synthi, building a deep understanding of waveforms, envelopes, low-frequency oscillators, and modulators.

video upload by Hispasonic

GS Music Bree6 on the desk.

New Uses for Old Circuits Series

"New Uses for Old Circuits is a series looking at linear and nonlinear processes in the modular system.

In this video we look at the al-Jabr (الجبر) patch - a patch that injects inverted signals into the feedback loop to tame chaotic behavior, and uses the rate of change (derivative) of a signal as a cybernetic regulator."

Yuyo cmos synth - First try Attiny85 dco with analog cmos shaping and twin t filter

video upload by JIANT

"everything is from the synth to the zoom recorder, twin t drums, xor snare, pt2399, and cmos stuff.

attiny85 reseting the phase of 40106 oscilators, the digital control accepts 1voct from keysetp and go to the 40106 inputs through resistors, a little rc for filtering the pwm, and for this reason when you change the oscillator frequency you can get intervals and crazy stuff. is not orthodox but suits my need for Rich timbres. the dco goes to 40106 buffers , and then 4040 dividers, twin t filters, one for each of the two voices, one goes to env, vca, filter, delay, and the other one to clock divider and filter, to get the sub osc.

firmware super simple only for checking the conversion from filtered frecuency of the attiny85 to my 40106 non exponencial vcos.
currently is tracking 10 octaves really good, the trick is put a voltage divider in the cv in of the attiny because keystep has 0 to 10v and the attiny accepts 0 to 5v tehn the tracking inside the attiny converts o.5v oct to 1 volt oct. i dont know anything about coding but i made it with chat gpt and my design . source code will be in the coments ."

Press releae follows:

CALGARY, Alberta – January 13, 2025 – iConnectivity today announces the highly anticipated follow-up to the industry-standard PlayAUDIO1U, the new PlayAUDIO2U. Building on a reputation of made-to-tour live performance solutions, the PlayAUDIO2U sets a new benchmark for professional touring rigs with a powerful 24 balanced XLR output configuration and four pristine, ultra-low noise microphone preamps. The physical build of the PlayAUDIO2U might be its most revolutionary innovation, combining extensive inputs, outputs, and extreme MIDI connectivity into one rugged 2U rackable enclosure. All I/O ports are specially reinforced to withstand the rigors of daily touring—designed to be plugged directly into stage boxes and house sound systems every day. You can say goodbye to complex, fragile setups. Now building a reliable touring rig is as simple as installing a single PlayAUDIO2U in a rack.

Two KETRON SOLTON PROGRAMMER 24 synthesizers synchronized with each other and to a MINIMOOG

video upload by Davide Micheli

Click CC at the bottom of the player for subtitles, followed by the gear icon and and your language of choice if needed.

Live Sets from Space – ambient grooves for late night

video upload by Caught In Joy

"Long-form ambient and analog music with gentle, evolving grooves.
Designed for late nights, focus, and staying on in the background.

This liveset was recorded live in the studio as one continuous flow – no talking, no hard stops, just slow movement and steady pulse. Some moments drift, others gently lock into rhythm, always leaving space to breathe.

If this keeps you company while you work, rest, or unwind, feel free to let it run.

🎧 Extended versions available on Bandcamp (three longer livesets + YouTube version included):
https://caughtinjoy24.bandcamp.com/al...
Pricing:
$9 today
$15 this weekend
$25 after Monday

Everything here was mixed on my modded 70s analog console, with performances recorded to analog tape. Warm, dense, and inviting tones emerge – transients softened, harmonics glued, time moving a little slower.

If these sessions keep you company while you work, rest, or drift, this is how they continue to exist.

Thank you for listening.
Thank you for supporting the work.

– Caught In Joy"

WISP - Granular Ambient Modular #17 // Instruo Arbhar, Qu-Bit Mojave, Rhodes

video upload by David Falcon

"noun /wɪsp/
a delicate, thin, and sometimes twisting piece or line of something

Lleva a sorpresas y texturas interesantes.

(eng)
I was in the mood for a relaxing piece so I made one for myself! It started by sampling some new sounds into Arbhar. Rhodes, Piano, Vibraphone, Accordion, Synth bass and Strings. In my experience this module works best when sampling phrases to then sweep around with its engine instead of single notes. It leads to more happy accidents and interesting textures. In this jam only the vibraphone and some rhodes was used.

The high texture vocal-like sound is myself singing into Mojave and locking the buffer. I tweaked the module until I found something that worked. It was mixed with a bass line in the subharmonicon and sent to the Dual Dagger to control the dynamics of the song.
Lastly the Analog Four is adding Kick, Hi-Hat and two simple lines on top. I also improvise with a Nord Rhodes sound on top in some of the parts."

When modules grow limbs: ADDAC's Servo

video upload by Electrum Modular

"Checking out Servo, a unique new module from ADDAC Systems. It can turn knobs or trim pots on a modular, synth, pedal, mixer, or anything else that’s small and cylindrical and that lacks a cv input. Perfect for when your hands are busy doing other things, or for when you want slow LFO-style modulation, or for when you want super precise stepped adjustments.

More info and manual:
https://www.addacsystem.com/en/produc...

Latest Electrum Modular album:
https://smallchanges1.bandcamp.com/al..."

"At ADDAC we always admired the geniality of Neil Young’s Whizzer, way ahead of it’s time, a great example how great ingenuity and engineering can come together to make something great. Inspired by it’s motor controlled method we created a 4HP solution to control any knob that doesn’t have a CV input, while also possible to use for other gear as well (within certain distance constraints).

We use a Servo motor which is a specific type of motor that can be digitally controlled to go to a precise angle. This motor is controlled by a microcontroller that also receives an incoming CV voltage from 0 to +5v and lineary converts this voltage range to the 270 degree Servo motor range.

Using a spring wire and metal couplers the motor shaft is then attached to the target knob to be controlled which will turn as the Servo turns.
Two other knobs [MAXIMUM ANGLE] & [MINIMUM ANGLE] further allow to control the “sweet spot” of the target knob, setting a smaller Servo range.

Raising the [MIN ANGLE] knob above the [MAX ANGLE] knob inverts the Servo range.

We can't stress enough how important it is to read the whole User's Guide thoroughly for this one!

Note: All specifications and features are subject to change without previous notice."
