Korg USA Mourns the Passing of Jack Hotop, Legendary Sound Designer and Innovator
Some sad news in via Korg.
You can find posts on MATRIXSYNTH featuring Jack Hotop here for a look back on his influence in the synthesizer community. The first post was a simple pic back in 2006.
Press release from Korg follows:
Over a 40-Year Career, the Influential Synthesist and Accomplished Touring Keyboardist Shaped the Sonic Architecture of More Than 100 Landmark Instruments, Including the Historic M1 Workstation
MELVILLE, N.Y. - Korg USA announces with deep sadness the passing of longtime employee, celebrated sound designer, and musical instrument industry icon Jack Hotop. Joining Korg USA (then Unicord) in 1983, Hotop started as Senior Voicing Manager and spent over four decades driving the development, sound design, programming, voicing, and product demonstrations for more than 100 Korg products. As a pioneering engineer and exceptionally skilled performer, his extensive contributions helped guide the evolution of synthesizers and digital workstations from the early 1980s through the modern era, leaving an indelible imprint on instruments used by musicians around the world and for generations to come.
Hotop’s foundational expertise was anchored in a rigorous musical and technical background. Raised in a musical family, he began piano lessons at age seven, inspired by his father, a musician featured on several Broadway cast recordings, and numerous pianists on his mother’s side. By age 14, he was actively performing in local bands on a Gibson 101 organ. He pursued formal training at the Berklee College of Music, majoring in arranging, composition, and accompaniment, before expanding into emerging music technology at the Boston School of Electronic Music under Roger Powell. It was there that Hotop established his core synthesis fundamentals using early hardware including the ARP Odyssey, 2600, 2500, and EMS Synthi, building a deep understanding of waveforms, envelopes, low-frequency oscillators, and modulators.

"This collection of vintage synthesizers has grown with me for years. Most all of these instruments have been used on many projects, including VeggieTales, a variety of remixes, and many PlayStation video games and marketing and promotional discs. Most recently they were used on the Mass Effect Andromeda video games soundtrack. They have also been sampled and are part of the SoundVault Collection and the Kurzweil Analog Collection for the K2000 series samplers.
VEMIA note: to forestall many inquiries, The seller’s idea is that he wants to sell it as a whole. That may or may not work out in this auction. If it doesn’t, obviously he’ll be free to do whatever he wants after the auction finishes.
It all works. Everything has been kept in a clean, smoke-free, climate-controlled studio. I have always fixed things myself, so everything is operational and sounding great. I have repair notes on the synths that received attention, though most of them have worked great over the years, without much need for repairs. There are also several MIDI to CV converters so they can all be controlled by computer, plus cables if desired. And a few have cases and manuals.

Jamuary 11-01-26 - 2x CPM DS-2/DF-8/SQ-1 Minimal Techno
video upload by ChrisLody
"Hello, remember me? I'm still here 😄
I found time for a quick Jamuary jam today with two Stylophone CPM DS-2s and DF-8s. I make a bit of content for them so I've had these a while and I've been meaning to upload something using them. They're producing all the sound here including the percussion and the effects. The two Korg SQ-1 are both running in 2x 8 step mode for 4 full channels of sequencing. It's a bit restrictive with the SQ-1 but still fun!
I have an mmMidi module in my eurorack that has two CV and Gate outputs and is also expandable with an extra module to add drum style gates on a third midi channel. that would be an excellent way to sequence this with something like a Lofi-12 XT, but I don't have the expander yet, it's on the list 😅"
"If you'd like to support the channel you can grab a 'Pay What You Want' album from my Bandcamp.

Oberheim Legacy: In 1974, Tom Oberheim imagined a small synth as an accessory to his DS-2A digital sequencer. But it was Dennis P Collins, a gifted ARP engineer, who designed the multimode filter of the Synth Expander Module (SEM). This unique filter is a 12 db filter that cannot deny its lineage with the ARP 1047 (ARP 2500) and ARP 2023 (white Odyssey MK1) filters, 12 db filters also designed by Dennis P Collins. With two very fat VCOs and a devastating sync (also close to the Odyssey VCOs), the small SEM offers a powerful sound, very present in the mix and very different from Moog and other synths with 24 db filters. So despite its simplicity and a filter that does not enter self-oscillation, we can get a lot of sounds out of it. Accessible and easy to use, the SEM is a success. In 1975, Tom paired first two, then four, into a huge keyboard case, creating the first "true" polyphonic instrument in history, the "Four Voices." In 1976, the SEM was even expanded to eight. Nicknamed the "White Elephant," its sound was as enormous as the instrument itself! But in 1978, the brilliant Prophet-5 made it obsolete, and Tom designed the OB-X, whose channel cards were also clones of the SEM. Subsequently, the OB-XA and OB-8 used Curtis chipsets and no longer had quite the same sound. In 2010, Oberheim reissued the SEM identically, but with all surface-mount components. In 2011, the SEM PRO added just a MIDI interface.
NRsynth "Solo": This is an "extended" version of the SEM, handcrafted with traditional through-hole components. Only the envelopes have been modified for a punchier result; the rest is identical to the original synth. Additionally, the Solo features a sub-oscillator, a glide, white noise, and many more modulation options than the SEM. MIDI velocity is also supported. Finally, the white metal case gives way to a luxurious, classically crafted cabinet with waxed oak sides and black tolex, similar to a Marshall amp.
A patchbook of all Séraphin Palmeri's sounds is included with the device.
Specifications:
VCO: Two discrete VCOs with hard sync, saw, pulse + PW (same as SEM)
Sub-oscillator: Pulse wave – 1 octave below VCO1.
Noise: 100% analog white noise
Multimode 12 dB filter: Same as SEM with LPF, HPF, notch, and bandpass mode. VCA: Analog (same as SEM)
LFO: Analog, triangle wave (same as SEM)
Envelopes: Analog (same as Pro-1) with deactivatable "Release".
Digital LFO: 8 waveforms + tilt, 3 frequency ranges, sync.
Sample and Hold: Analog, sync.
Glide: Analog portamento circuit at the input.
Patchbay: 15 I/O points on 3.5mm jacks (Eurorack compatible).
Rear Connections: Audio I/O and sync on 6.35mm jacks. Reset button.

Blue Korg 707 Performing Synthesizer with Power Supply and Books
Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

"A good entry level digital synth. It's small in size, simple in its design and offers fairly easy editing. It is a digital FM type synthesizer which makes some very thin and digital but sometimes interesting sounds. The synth engine is similar to the DS-8 without on-board effects. It has 8 parts so each voice can play a different patch, and is completely programmable through MIDI. It isn't necessarily useful for any professional work but if you want a lo-fi cheesy digital sound from a toy-like synthesizer then give the 707 a try! It can even be strapped on like a guitar. It is used by Juan Atkins."

"Working perfectly, very unique sounds
The DS-8 is Korg's contender among synths like the Roland D-50 and Yamaha DX7. It is a digital FM synthesizer with 4-operators per voice, 8 voices of polyphony and 8 parts multitimbrality. It's good for percussive, strange effect noises and such because its sound (similar to the DX7) is so unique. It has some digital effects such as chorus, flange, delay and analog-like controls for modulators, envelopes and the LFO. A joystick provides control of modulation and pitch bending. It also has a performance section for quick edits on the fly using (3) real-time sliders to control timbre, EG1 and EG2. A nice alternative to the common DX-7."
