808 Day 2025: Roland Celebrates 45 Years of Rhythm Culture

video upload by RolandChannel

"A TR-808 beat so raw it stopped gangsters in their tracks."

"Check the debut of The Rhythm Creators series, featuring @ThEgyptianLover's first meeting with the drum machine that changed everything. Animated by Vaughn Taormina."

Press release follows:

Los Angeles, CA, August 7, 2025 — Roland Corporation celebrates the 45th anniversary of its iconic TR-808 Rhythm Composer today. Since its debut in 1980, the TR-808, commonly known as “the 808,” has shaped the creation of musical genres from hip-hop to techno, trap, and beyond. Its unmistakable sound has powered decades of iconic tracks, from smash hits like Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” and Beyoncé’s “Drunk in Love” to a sea of underground techno, electro, and hip-hop anthems. TR drum machines have laid the musical pulse for generations, fueling global rhythm culture through the hands of producers, DJs, and creative visionaries who continue to push its legacy in new directions.

To celebrate this 808 Day, Roland will unveil a series of special releases—including a limited-edition sneaker collaboration with New Balance—and global events that pay tribute to the 808’s enduring legacy and cultural impact.

Rhythm Creators
As part of the celebration, Roland is launching The Rhythm Creators, an eight-part animated video series highlighting untold stories from artists shaped by the legacy of its most iconic rhythm machines—the TR-808 and its influential successor, the TR-909. Each episode blends humor, reverence, and nostalgia, and features stylized animation by Detroit artist Vaughn Taormina and narration from the artists themselves.

Episode one premieres today with Egyptian Lover, with new installments featuring Prince Paul, Fatboy Slim, Soul II Soul’s Jazzie B, and other trailblazing artists dropping throughout August and into September.

New Balance Collaboration
Roland and iconic footwear brand New Balance have relaunched the special edition Tiago Lemos NM808 x Roland sneaker. This collaboration exemplifies the 808’s impact on music and culture, showcasing the unique intersection of skateboarding, hip-hop, and fashion.

To further celebrate this collaboration, Roland and New Balance are hosting Atlanta’s creative community for an exclusive industry mixer dedicated to the 808’s legacy in the birthplace of trap music.

The mixer will be hosted at SESSIONS Atlanta, the iconic studio run by legendary producer Tricky Stewart. Highlights will include private Roland product demonstrations, live performances by Sonny Digital and Mix Master David, as well as an appearance by the popular BackTrack podcast host Don Cannon. Guests will also check out the Tiago Lemos NM808 x Roland sneakers in person.

The Tiago Lemos NM808 x Roland sneakers will be available starting on August 8 at 10:00 a.m. EDT for $114.99 on newbalance.com.

Roland Retail Celebrations: Tokyo and London
In Tokyo, Roland is teaming up with iconic streetwear brand XLARGE for a special 808 Day launch celebration at the Roland and XLARGE stores in the fashionable Harajuku District. The event will include live techno sets from REMO-CON, Yebisu303, and Ken Plus Ichiro, as well as an exclusive first look at the limited-edition XLARGE x 808 capsule collection, available for purchase in-store. The Crow Hill Company Introduces POCKET STRING no-barrier-to-entry-styled string library plug-in

video upload by CROW HILL XTRAS

Press release follows:

"The Crow Hill Company creates POCKET STRINGS as no-barrier-to-entry-styled string library plug-in produced without compromise… with added ‘synthy spice’

EDINBURGH, UK: having recently rebranded itself with an aesthetic that truly realises company co-founder and composer Christian Henson’s heartfelt dream of encouraging people to make music and help them on their journey, regardless of whatever point they were at and wherever their journey began, The Crow Hill Company continues its journeying into ‘Season Two’ as a producer of resources and tools to protect, inspire, support, and provide opportunities for music-makers the world over, believing that music is, and should remain, a wholly human experience, one that is by far one of the most powerful forms of expression, escape, comfort, and remembrance, of which its newly-created POCKET STRINGS — styled as a definitive string library plug-in that opens the doors to collaboration between anyone anywhere, creatively combining live cinematic orchestral recordings with some rarefied vintage synth classics made to measure for added body, depth, and character — readily represents the cornerstone of this ethos, as of July 10…

“A string library that’s accessible to all without compromise — a distillation of the last 25, nearly 30, years that I’ve been working as a media composer, which means that I write music for film, TV, and computer games, giving you the very basic necessities to write pro-end string arrangements. Whether that be adding to productions, songs, collaborating with others, or, indeed, creating professional film scores — whether that be to demo for an orchestra to play, or, indeed, to go to broadcast, there’s been no compromises here. But accessibility is the key — not just with the price point, but with usability.” So says Christian Henson himself, perfectly positioned — as The Crow Hill Company’s original founder, forging forward by building upon his extensive experience gained from founding Spitfire Audio to originally offer a palette of sounds he had created for his own use as a professional composer to his film world colleagues by invitation only, though the rest, as they say, is history — to proudly introduce POCKET STRINGS as a never-tried-before strings library plug-in that aims to bring broadcast-grade string possibilities to everyone.

Akai VX600 Synthesizer Demo [no talking]

video upload by gstormelectro

"Audio + Video by G-Storm Electro c. 2025

This is a six voice analog Akai VX600 synthesizer. Two oscillators per voice, and it takes minimum 30 minutes to stabilize tuning enough to play. Even so, it also wants 3 or 4 auto-tune sessions. Basses, pads, leads, arpeggios. Please enjoy. While this demo features my original patches, alas - there's no way to backup patches to computer or share them w/ others in that way. It only accepts Roland style Memory Cards. Be sure to check out my patches for other synths available at https://gstormelectro.gumroad.com/

Recorded direct via EPM6 mixer to GO-Mixer Pro-X interface to iPhone, no added effects.
The synth output is very hot, so any clipping you hear was overloading the input at the mixer."

"The Dreadnaught Factor" - Akai MPC X + Behringer 2600 Blue Marvin + ASM Hydrasynth + MINIFREAK...

video upload by Patrick Manderson

"'The Dreadnaught Factor' was recorded live early Saturday morning on January 21st 2023 using a MIDI sequencer, a room full of synthesizers and drum machines. Four analog mixers were used with a rack of outboard effects and mixed stereo. Mixing and automation was controlled by the sequencer directly to the synthesizers. The final reorded required manual muting of the of mixer channels to suppress the noise coming from some of the devices including the Korg Minilogue. The video was taken afterwards.

"The Dreadnaught Factor" was inspired by the box art of an early 80s video game for Intellivision. It featured a number of spaceships on a blue background much like the 2600 Blue Marvin featured in this music. The melody and chord arrangement originated from a short piece I created several years ago and later merged it with a small piece of unfinished music titled "Driod Mischief". I was pleased how the two sounded when arranged in this way. I look forward to finishing "Droid Mischief".

The Hydrasynth plays a few different roles in Dreadnaught, even doubling up with the BassStation adding filter modulations to the bass parts [3:23].

The Korg MS2000 never disappoints when you use its modulation sequencer and its charasmatic digital distortion. Several parts were played, twisting and swirling in the stereo field. Modulated tremolos off-rhythm and hypnotic.

Korg Minilogue XD has so much range - such a wide sweet spot of sound. Especially when you use the digital user oscillators. Resonating plucks and unnatural reverbs works well for my tastes.

The Behringer 2600 Blue Marvin and Model D is featured in the "Droid Mischief" part at [2:58].
The notes were played over MIDI. Volume modulation was controlled with CV from the *Akai Pro MPC X*.
The Model D ran through the inputs of the Roland TR8s for its Phaser effect. The TR8S did nothing else.

There are a few dark pad patches I re-use often on the Oberheim Matrix 1000 playing disonant chords throughout.

The Elektron Analog Rytm MkII provides most of the rhythms. Each of its 12 voices run on its own MIDI channel with a full complement of continuous controllers. Lots of CC modulation was used on some of the voices. The internal sequencer was not used. All notes and automation comes from the *MPC X*.

Arturia's MINIFREAK layered in a few bits throughout and is featured at the very end [6:11]. Macros were modulated from the *MPC X*.

Korg's Radias is 4 part multitimbral. On part #4 I keep a carefully curated drum kit synthesized with noise, sines and filters - mixed with some of the built in drum samples. Part #1 featured a vocal "ah-ha" patch [3:01] using one of the vowel waves, a formant insert effect and careful modulation of its dual filters.

My favorite guitar pluck patch on the Korg EX-8000 makes an appearance.

At the center of it all, the MPC X seemlesssly connects to everything and manages to keep all devices in perfect sync. As mentioned before - meticulous editing of MIDI events is a breeze and very comfortable over long editing sessions. Approximately 21 tracks were used including Control Voltage for the modulars.

Explore everything from traditional analog synths to modern digital voices, all carefully curated for the unique articulations and extended dynamic range of a wind instrument."

The "Aerophone also supports USB-MIDI, giving you an incredibly powerful controller for creation with your favorite music production apps."

Press release follows:

Los Angeles, CA, January 6, 2022 — Roland announces Aerophone AE-20, the latest member of the company’s innovative family of digital wind instruments. Aerophone AE-20 delivers all the playability and expression of the flagship Aerophone Pro in a more compact and streamlined design. Offering a rich musical experience with premium details and Roland’s most advanced sound engines, this inspiring instrument brings next-level power and versatility to wind players everywhere.

Developed in collaboration with leading wind synth artists, Aerophone AE-20 is a top-flight instrument with uncompromising musical response. It features the core sounds and expressive control of Aerophone Pro, along with the premier model’s acclaimed key touch, refined playability, and go-everywhere design.

Aerophone AE-20 provides a wide range of stunningly authentic acoustic instrument sounds at the touch of a button. Soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxes are on hand, plus clarinet, flute, trumpet, and more. Violin, cello, and other string instruments are also included, along with world instruments like erhu, shakuhachi, and bagpipes. Backed by Roland’s SuperNATURAL technology, every playing nuance is fully translated with lifelike dynamics, articulations, and overtones.

The versatility of Aerophone AE-20 extends even further with the ZEN-Core Synthesis System, the same advanced sound engine found in professional Roland keyboards like FANTOM and JUPITER-X. Everything from traditional analog synths to modern digital voices are available, all carefully curated for the unique articulations and extended dynamic range of a wind instrument.

Aerophone AE-20 lets wind players step right into their musical flow with a familiar reed-style mouthpiece, immediate response, and natural pitch and vibrato control. The breath and bite sensors are customizable and ultra-sensitive, and it’s possible to reconfigure the fingering for sax, clarinet, flute, recorder, or a personal setup. Instant transposition and a five-octave range enable players to cover any style without the range limits found with traditional acoustic instruments.

Aerophone AE-20 features an onboard speaker for grab-and-go playing, as well as a headphones jack for quiet practice sessions. There’s also a line output for connecting to a stage amp or PA while performing, plus USB-MIDI for music creation with popular MIDI production apps.

Aerophone AE-20 comes with onboard Bluetooth® connectivity for wireless integration with mobile music apps from Roland and others. The Aerophone Lesson app helps users get started right away, even if they’ve never played a wind instrument. The Aerophone Pro Editor unlocks the full potential of Aerophone with deep customization of sound and performance settings. And with Bluetooth audio streaming, users can play along with music and instructional videos through the Aerophone’s sound system.

Corona Session 2 - A little lullaby

video by Jörg Schaaf

Jörg Schaaf Corona Sessions

"Everyone talks about Corona and Covid 19 every day. In most cases the result is a really depressing mood. The fear to get sick, the loneliness while staying home, all the missing friends etc. Really disgusting. We should start to see Covid 19 as a chance. The chance to find time to realize things, you would not get done in normal times. I for example finished my album in 2020, grew vegetables in my garden and spent more time than ever with my hobbies. I did not spent so much time in my pub. So, I drunk less beer. All that are positive aspects. I even started jogging in 2020.

That’s the reason, I call my night sessions from now on Corona sessions. Just to help you guys seeing that pandemic as a chance as well. You have one life! So, spend time with yourself and do something, you always wanted to do but never found the time to do. I prepared a nice little video studio at a rent place and I can go there whenever I want to and can perform music and shoot videos. That is a great pleasure for me.

Here is Corona Session 2. For the first time, I added some little fog to the performance. That gives hopefully an illusion of a real live concert.

When my favorite pub Klimbim in Gießen is opened again, the final Corona session will take place and a new name will be born.
Little improvisation with the following machines:
2x Delta CEP A (the percussive sequence and the solo/meldody leadsynth)
1x Accelerator (All the pads)
1x Spectralis (The massive bass sequence)
2x Keystep keyboards. One of them plays the sequence, that runs on Delta CEP A 1.

Live MIXED on 1 Atem MINI PRO Video Mixer
Cameras and lenses:
Canon EOS-80D with Walimex Cine Lense 35 mm/1,5
Canon EOS 250D with Sigma 10-20 mm/4
Canon EOS 200D with 18-55 kit lense
Elgato Streamdeck for camera switching and macro recall.

Meanwhile the album is available on my bandcamp page:

Songs that Changed Music: New Order - Blue Monday

Produce Like A Pro

Some interesting synth bits in this one including the Sequential Circuits Prophet-5, Oberheim DMX, some DIY, and lets just say, "experimental sample sessions" with the E-Mu Emulator. Hope this doesn't ruin New Order for anyone...

Modular Moog Analog Sessions by Riccardo Fassi

Published on Mar 30, 2020 Riccardo Fassi

"This set of recordings was conceived as a spontaneous improvisation inspired by the sound of Moog Modular systems in all their infinite possibilities. The idea is to use these wonderful vintage instruments in an open way to make immediate and compelling music. Modern technology offers unlimited possibilities, but it is precisely the apparent limitations of these "electronic dinosaurs" that unfold endless tonal resources and effects to produce boundless and novel solutions. I want to thank the great drummer Davide Pettirossi for the fantastic groove in the songs Slow Cat and B. Groove.

Instruments:
Moog 12 Modular, Moog 35 Custom Unit, Roland System 700 Lab, Modular Custom Unit with Cynthia Zeroscillator - Moog 921 Oscillators - Bode Frequency Shifter (by Mike Bucki) - MOTM Filters, R. A. Quarantine Sessions 2

Published on Mar 21, 2020 Ran Kirlian

"Second live jam recorded during Covid-19 quarantine in my home studio. This live performance follows a similar structure than the previous one, containing different improvised sound environments melted together with a strong presence of a minimal modular system. In this session the main synthesizers were the Soma Lyra-8 and the Nordrack 2x, both reinforced with The Amazing Noises Reverb on the iPad thru Lexicon Omega audio interface. Nordrack is played from Korg Nanokey, connected to the iPad as well and routed with Aum to the Omega interface to the synth MIDI in. Sadly not much can be seen in this video due to bad camera (or artist) position, but I hope you like the music instead.

With this live recordings I’m not only having fun while playing relaxed without my typical time limitations, but also expressing this unique experience of being confined at home, watching the news, seeing the empty streets from my windows and having a social life limited to my wife, my son and my cats beyond the electronic communications.

Tracklist:

Part 1 - 00:00
Part 2 - 07:38
Part 3 - 15:23
Part 4 - 23:29
Part 5 - 28:44
Part 6 - 32:43
Part 7 - 35:02
Part 8 - 39:05
Part 9 - 44:08

Tools:
- Minimal eurorack system
- Soma Lyra-8

"MIDI and CV-equipped keyboard controller with eight-track sequencer

Novation today announces the next generation of SL keyboard controllers. SL MkIII is far from your typical keyboard controller. It’s an all sequencing, all dancing hub for all of your music-making tools. A centrepiece to connect, control and create with your entire setup. Computer or not. Create quickly and easily with your MIDI hardware and CV/Gate synths. Build your tracks in the eight-track polyphonic sequencer: everything in time; everything in key; every control at your fingertips.

Novation worked with Ableton® to create an unprecedented integration with Live™. SL MkIII truly pulls your sessions out of the box. The full colour LCD screens give you full visibility of your parameters, while the pads, buttons, eight faders and eight knobs get you hands-on with your music – and in any major music software, using InControl. Deep integrations with Logic® and Reason – plus HUI compatibility with Cubase, Pro Tools® and Reason – mean SL MkIII can follow you away from Ableton®, too.

SL MkIII boasts Novation's finest, most playable and expressive synth-style semi-weighted keybed, with a sprung action and Novation's highest scan rate, all tuned to the needs of the experienced player.

Key features

Absolute hardware control, taking total control directly from the internal eight-track polyphonic pattern-based sequencer

Easy integration with Ableton® Live™ or any other HUI-compatible DAW. Controlling software is made easy by recording productions from a studio centrepiece

Whether in the box or outside the box, the MIDI and analogue clock and transport controls keep everything running in time

Highly customisable mappings for hardware and software easily control everything

USB; MIDI In, Out, Out 2/Thru; three pedal inputs; Analogue Clock Out; and two CV Pitch, Gate, and Mod outputs can be used to route anything anywhere

SL MkIII's pads, buttons, eight faders and eight knobs take control of all major music software using InControl

The SL MkIII has an exceptionally high scan rate of 10kHz, giving the keyboard a huge dynamic range for expressive keyboard performance

SL MkIII's velocity-sensitive RGB pads have multiple functions: they can be used for launching clips, as steps in the sequencer, they are perfect for the finger drummer, and have polyphonic aftertouch

Components allows templates and sessions to be backed up and restored in the cloud, enabling access from anywhere in the world. All content can also be saved locally"
