4 Random voltages you should know

video upload by Monotrail Tech Talk

"Random voltages are the spice of modular patching. Not the main or core ingredients of a dish, but the final details that make a sound stand out, and have character. Knowing what voltage to use for the right occasion, is key. Today, I’ll go over four different random voltages, highlighting the pros and cons for each."

New module! Dual Retro Vco

video upload by Radical Frequencies Modular

"Listen the new Radical Frequencies Dual Retro VCO playing an arpeggio , showing all waveforms and making Pulse with modulation and Hard Sync between the vcos . It goes through the RF Mixer and then to Diode Dream Vcf as it suits this oscillator perfectly! #eurorack #modularsynth #radicalfrequenciesmodular #dualretrovco #drvco #diodedreamvcf #analogsynth"

"Handmade Dual VCO of discrete core capable of internal FM cross modulations - Hard sync and Ring Modulator

• Analog discrete saw core oscillators with Saw, Pulse, Triangle and Ring Modulation wave outputs. The sound is warm and fat, emphasizing odd harmonics for this big retro sound. My purpose here is to approach the sound of classic synths from 70s, that we all loved.
• The SAW wave produces rich bass frequencies, sweet mids and smooth highs but overall, it is still well balanced across the full frequency range. The Triangle wave is almost perfect in shape with no buzzy hum sound. The pulse wave can produce that chorus-like phasing effect, when using an LFO to modulate the PWM input and does so in a very unique way, as it changes the phase of the signal as well.
• Two identical VCOs : VCO ALPHA and VCO BETA, with the ability of hard sync as each VCO syncs internally with the other. Using the attenuator knob for SYNC, you can go from zero to soft sync(11-12 o’clock) to hard sync when the knob is fully CW. For syncing you just need to turn CW, the sync knob of the VCO you want to be the slave. Don’t open both the sync knobs at the same time unless you want to make some weird sounds.
• There are external sync inputs for each VCO as well. External oscillators can be used as masters, just feed the output of the oscillator of your preference, into the sync input or either ALPHA or BETA. Just remember to feed a saw or a square wave, into the SYNC input. This is very important in order to sync the oscillator. A ramp wave it will not sync at all! (The RF DPVCO for example is a ramp out VCO and if you want to use it as master you must invert the signal first.)
• Both ALPHA and BETA track 5 octaves accurately, tempco resistors are attached to the tuning ICs CA3046 on both VCOs.
Separate voltage regulators for each oscillator can achieve the best sounding results without drift or bleed pitch, between VCOs.
• Both VCOs go from a relative fast LFO range with the coarse tuning knob fully CCW, up to high frequency oscillation.
• Octave Switches of 3 positions: 1 octave down - , zero , 1 octave up +, are available and make patching, fast and intuitive.
• There are internal normalisations for exponential as well as linear FM and both have independent EXP FM and LIN FM, attenuators.
• You can select the wave for the internal FM buss via the front panel switches .Options are Triangle and SAW. The internal FM wave, is independent per VCO as well.
• There are also internal normalisations for PWM, where each VCO modulates the pulse width, of the other and both use the triangle waveform.
• There is a PW offset, per VCO - negative phase pulse width at CCW to + positive phase at CW and 50-50 duty cycle square wave, in the middle of the knob.
• Ring Modulation section is a separate feature where X and Y inputs are internally connected with the VCOs as well. It has 2 inputs, X and Ψ and one out, RM. The inputs are internally connected to the internal FM buss switch of triangle - saw selector.
VCO ALPHA is internally connected into Ψ input and VCO BETA, into X input. You can feed the RM inputs any wave you desire from other VCOs as well .
• An external patch cable breaks the normalisation of all internal connections, via input jacks. (EXP FM, LIN FM, PWM, SYNC, X Ψ)

• Important note about tuning : The vcos need at least 30 minutes warm up before using it for good tracking. Also when you have to tune the vcos it’s better the octave switches to be in the middle position and all the fm and sync knobs must be closed (CCW)

• Large range of sounds with countless sweet spots - ultra stable tuning for FM sounds by using the FM and SYNC knobs simultaneously - fat basses, classic leads and drones. Feed the DRVCO into a good filter and you will enjoy it as it was meant to be! The VCF that I suggest is the RF Diode Dream VCF as it is a ladder filter and suits it perfectly! Of course any other filter of your taste can be used with great results."

Don Buchla’s electronic instruments can be understood as musical tools and as environments for exploration. They allow performers to play in a physical and expressive way, yet they also invite a method of working that resembles research into the behavior of voltage and timbre.
Buchla did not follow the conventions of keyboard based instruments. Instead he created systems in which sound could be shaped through touch sensitive controls, complex modulation, and freely arranged signal paths. As a result, each patch becomes both a performance setup and a place to investigate how tones, noise sources, control voltages and modulation can interact within an electronic space."

via this Vemia listing

Click the auction link on top when you get there for additional listings.

"Probably one of the best examples of the classic Studio 440 anywhere.
Sampler/sequencer/drum machine from Sequential Circuits, circa 1987. S/N 582. The present owner bought this from Wine Country in 2007. It has version 2.30 (SCSI) operating system by Pointsource, 512K RAM, 12-bit sampling, up to 35 seconds sample time (at 16kHz, max rate is 44kHz), 50,000 note sequencer capacity, 8-note polyphonic, stereo audio outputs as well as individual track outputs 1 to 8. And, of course, it has MIDI – very easy to sequence up other synthesizers.

Quite a lot of functionality in a single box and easy to operate. The Studio 440 is fairly rare (about 600 made through 1986, ’87) and considered one of the pioneering forerunners to the later MPC units of the nineties.

This unit is in excellent condition – the cosmetics are very good, with tiny scratches around some of the edges of the enclosure. The main panel paintwork, graphics, knobs and switches are like new. No known issues operationally. Disks load fine, sound configuration, sampling, sequencing and audio all good, menus look normal. Display backlight is good, all hardware good. An easy instrument to get to know and operate, and sounds pretty good for a 12-bit sampler. Includes original manual (NOS from Wine Country), some service data, a number of sample disks, head protector disk (this will have to be ejected following transit) and a survival kit consisting of 8 spare touch pads (unused), two NOS pots, one switch module, one I-624 voice chip. The mains connection is standard IEC socket. The buyer will have to acquire their own mains cord that suits their country and change the internal voltage setting if necessary (explained in the manual. The present setting is 230V).

Weighs 10kg. Unit measures approximately 60x30x16cm (including manual, disks and spare parts). Packaged up, will be maybe 10% larger and heavier. The item is located in New Zealand. Examples of approximate door to door air-freight shipping costs, including insurance, at the time of writing, are: UK/Europe, 300GPB/Euros. USA, $500USD (US tariffs may change at short notice). Australia, $250AUD. Costs to be confirmed upon sale. Importing customs charges and tax are buyers responsibility. You're welcome to find alternative shipping at your expense and risk."

It's Only Noise - Random Percussion with Sample & Hold, No Sequencer...just for fun #eurorack

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"Messing about with noise and random voltages. This patch is just various noise sources through various filters, frequency-modulated by sample & hold, with envelopes controlling amplitude (VCA) or affecting filter frequency. No sequencer was harmed in the making of this video.

The ‪@solidstatelogic‬ BigSix is used to mix all 4 sounds, with the ‪@vermonagear‬ DSR-3 providing stereo spring reverb for the drone and occasional sound.

Video & performance by ‪@DreamsOfWires‬

Patch Breakdown:

Drone: This is just pink noise going into the FIXED FILTER BANK 914, but with an LFO from the DUAL RVG modulating the mix between the left and right bands of the Filter Bank, creating that slow, breathing effect. The AJH SYNTH 914 has built-in, voltage-controllable mixing/cross-fading functionality, which wasn't present in the original Moog 914 on which it is closely based.

Percussion 1: White noise going to the SONIC XV Diode Ladder Filter, using its band pass output. One channel of the DUAL RVG is sending random voltages to the Sonic's Filter Frequency/Cutoff, whilst a DH-ADSR envelope generator controls its audio level in the TRIPLE CROSS (being used as a triple VCA).

Percussion 2: This starts with noise generated by the LUNAR MODULE - this has 2 noise sources with different character and tone control, and built-in distortion. Its output goes to the MATRIX VCF, which has 16 different filter modes, which I cycle through manually during the video. See out User Guide video for more information: • NEW MODULE! MATRIX VCF User Guide - Vintag...

Occasional Sound: Here I'm using the SAMPLE & HOLD module to randomly trigger the MULTI BURST ENVELOPS module. The Colour control on the Sample & Hold determines the range of random voltages generated. It is a combination of Low Pass and High Pass filter over the onboard noise that is used to derive the voltages, so turning it anti-clockwise from the centre acts as a low pass filter, reducing voltages produced to be in the lower range, whereas turning it clockwise of the centre position acts as a high pass filter, meaning voltages in the higher range. Since it is generating lower voltages here, it is only occasionally producing enough of a voltage change to trigger the Multi Burst Envelopes. If I raise the Colour control it will trigger more often.
The Multi Burst Envelopes produces a chosen number of bursts of the selected envelope shape. The built-in LFO controls the speed of the bursts, as does the Clock input, but both can be used together or independently. I'm using it to control the frequency of the ENTROPIC DOOM's low pass filter, to generate an occasional burst of filtered noise."

Moog Opus 3 — "New Old Stock" Sliders, Switches, Controls, Control Caps & Knobs SN 5828

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this eBay listing

"The Moog Opus 3 is a vintage polyphonic synth that combines string, organ and brass sounds in a four-octave keyboard, along with flexible controls for shaping each sound.

One of the coolest things about the Opus 3 is that it has a classic Moog four-pole filter that the brass and organ can be run through. The filter has the sound Moogs are famous four, and it can be run into self-oscillation.

The synth also features a three-phase chorus effect that uses the famed Reticon bucket brigade chips, as well as stereo and mono outputs.

Here are details about the unit for sale:

The old, deteriorating foam that sat below the control panel has been removed from this one, so you don’t have to worry about it.

All of the sliders, switches and rotary controls — except for the master volume — were changed out for New Old Stock replacements. All the slider caps and control knobs are New Old Stock as well. Everything works smoothly, with no noise or issues.

The master volume has very minor crackle at the top end of its range while it’s being moved. It is otherwise noise-free during normal operation. I would have had it changed out but it wasn’t possible to source an original replacement.

One of the three original Reticon chips in the chorus effect was replaced when an original failed. All three are working, and the chorus sounds great.

The original red LED in the Modulation section was swapped out for a new bright blue LED.

I wasn’t able to test the sustain jack on the unit’s front panel. Moog chose an unusual size jack here— it’s slightly smaller than a 1/4-inch input. It would be easy to swap it out with a proper 1/4-inch jack if you choose to do so.

The physical condition is very good. Note the scratches to the wood and some minor marks on the faceplate.

All of the notes sound as they should, and all controls and functions work as they should.

HELPFUL NOTES
Although its functions are basic, you’ll need to understand the signal routing in the Opus 3. These are spelled out in the owner's manual (which is available online), but knowing the following will help you get your head around it.

For example, the chorus effect operates on the strings and organ, not on the brass. This is by design and is noted by an arrow on the control panel.

The Moog four-pole VCF can be used on the organ and brass, not the strings. Again, this is by design and is noted by an arrow on the control panel.

Frequency Modulation works on all sounds, but VCF modulation only works on the organ and brass because these are the two sounds that can be run through the VCF (see the point immediately above). Again, this is by design.

The length of chorus delay is set by using the delay fader in the Modulation section. This too is by design.

Two other noteworthy points:

• The pitch wheel has a firm detent (the point at which it sits at pitch). Other owners have noted the same thing about their units in online forums. It’s not difficult to work, but it’s firmer than on other synths I’ve owned.

• All of the electronics, aside from those mentioned above, are original and working fine. Electrical components can fail or become damaged with time and/or misuse. Always be sure you are connected to proper voltage, and note that ground loops can introduce hum."

Moog DFAM+Labyrinth 50 Combo Patches + Samples. Sound Demo

video upload by Anton Anru

"🥁 'Modular Impulse' is a collection of 50 combo patches for the semi-modular analog synthesizers Moog DFAM and Labyrinth.
The soundset focuses on rhythmic and dynamic sound design, as both synthesizers are naturally oriented toward punchy, percussive tones.
🧿 The collection includes basses, plucks, bleeps, drums, leads, and FXs.
There is a wide range of sound colors inside the pack: massive and gentle, aggressive and soft, bright and dull, melodic and inharmonic tones, as well as straight and polymetric patterns.

📦 The patches are available here: https://antonanru.sellfy.store/p/dfam...

🎛 The main idea behind the soundset is a high level of interconnection, rather than simply syncing the synths with independent timbres (individual patch collections for DFAM and Labyrinth are also available on my website).
In this patchbook, the timbres of the synths are tightly intertwined and cannot exist separately:

XAOC Devices Kamieniec II Phaser and Allpass Expansion Review

video upload by Molten Music Technology

"KAMIENIEC II
ANALOG RESONANT PHASE ROTATOR

ALLPASS EXTENSION

MODELS OF 1977

Introducing two new Xaoc Devices products: Kamieniec II and its Allpass Expansion sidekick. Kamieniec II is an updated and extended revision of Kamieniec - our analog module inspired by a range of classic phaser effect units from the 1970s. We aimed to preserve the classic sound while making Kamieniec versatile enough to shine with any modular sound source. The newly released module shares the basic specifications with its predecessor: 4 and 6-stage outputs, built in triangle LFO (with a separate output in the true modular spirit), manual resonance control (up to extremely high values), and spicy feedback routing modes. On the other hand, Kamieniec II is a truly new beast with redesigned circuitry and new features, such as voltage control over resonance, a third feedback mode, and an LFO reset input. We have retained the chaining feature and we are glad to say Kamieniec II is fully compatible with the original Kamieniec, so you can easily mix and match both generations of the module should you develop a craving for more stages.

Want even more stages without sacrificing precious HP in your case? We've got you covered. Enter the Allpass Expansion - an optional circuit board installed at the back of Kamieniec II. It adds up to 16 sweepable stages for a total of 22 (!), making Kamieniec II one of the most multidimensional and versatile analog phasers available in Eurorack.

Oh, and one last thing - Kamieniec II is 10HP.

Serge Modular Synth Res EQ | Feedback Drone

video upload by Akihiko Matsumoto

"Serge Modular Synth (Sample Pack) https://akihikomatsumoto.sellfy.store... Created entirely with the unique sonic character of Serge modular systems

About this Pack
Serge Tcherepnin once described his instruments not as tools but as open systems for discovering relationships between sound and control. The Serge Modular Synth is built on this principle. It does not simulate acoustic behavior; it generates its own logic of vibration. Each circuit is an experiment in how voltage can behave as if it were alive.

This sample pack captures that principle through Random Source’s modern Serge system, combining the GTO, GTS, and Res EQ with the reissued 50th Anniversary Paperface. The recordings move fluidly between the precise tension of Eurorack signals and the raw, physical tone of classic 4U banana systems. Every patch was shaped through direct voltage interaction rather than digital post-processing, preserving the unpredictable complexity that defines the Serge approach."

Crazy Chicken Modular SHRIMPY filter musical demonstration

video upload by Fedir Tkachov Music

"Musical exploration of new eurorack filter by Crazy Chicken Modular - SHRIMPY."

Shrimpy is a fully analog multimode voltage-controlled filter with three simultaneous audio outputs: low-pass, band-pass, and high-pass. It was designed with a strong focus on character rather than neutrality.

The resonance is voiced to emphasize midrange frequencies, giving the filter a present, expressive tone that cuts through a mix. At higher settings, it becomes vivid and assertive without collapsing into thinness.

At the heart of Shrimpy lies an unusual distortion chain integrated directly into the filter core. This distortion adds a pleasant crunch, enriching the sound. When pushed further, it can turn glitchy and rustling, introducing rough textures and unstable edges that make the filter feel alive. It should be noted that the distortion sound characteristics will depend on the Shrimpy settings and the input signal, since distortion occurs in the filter core itself, rather than at its input or output.

All parameters are fully voltage-controllable:
Cutoff frequency (with and without attenuator)
Resonance
Distortion amount

This makes Shrimpy a flexible yet opinionated sound processing tool, well suited for experimental patches, aggressive basses, textured leads, drones, and evolving soundscapes."
