52 Reason / Record Tips - Week 51: Thor Filters, Shaper, Envelope, LFO, and Mod Matrix

"With a solid foundation of synth theory and even Thor's fundamentals under your belt, this week we'll be diving deeper into the filter types in Thor - looking at the State Variable Filter, the Comb Filter, and the Formant Filter. You'll also learn about the self-oscillator included with some of these filters. From there we'll move through Thor's semi-modular signal path to see how you can tap into the sound-bending power of the shaper, the mod envelope, and the Modulation Matrix.

As with all of these Synth School videos, the knowledge in here builds heavily off of previous tutorials so if you're jumping in to this one first I can highly recommend looking at past weeks to get a better understanding of the advanced concepts we're covering here.

"We went to visit John Foxx deep in the darkest depths of Shoreditch, East London, at the studio of his latest collaborator, Benge. The studio isn’t far from where Foxx’s infamous “The Garden” studio once laid (on top of multiple Roman graves no less) and it’s also the location where the duo cut Interplay, the latest album by John Foxx and the Maths.

The notoriously quiet man sat down with Jordan to wax nostalgic about Foxx’s time in Ultravox, synths (obviously) dub techniques, drinking and eccentric sex. Finally, John was kind enough to demonstrate his infamous drum machine and play us some of the patches from his highly influential first album, Metamatic."

You might recognize Benge from several posts here on MATRIXSYNTH. He runs It's Full of Stars and currently works with John Foxx.

"Here we have TR 505 modded with separate volume controls, rhythm deconstructor buttons and global pitch. X0xb0x is sequencing FB383 with few mods and processed by zoom 1201 multi fx.
All that is sent through yamaha mt50 (mixer/tape recorder).

"Just got this yesterday. Having a little fun with it.

I opened up the 2 VCO on the Mopho and patched them into the Frequensteiner. Did the same with the Juno-60's DCO's and ran it into the R54 in VCF mode. The 190-2 is providing the GATE signal to the ADSR which is controlling all the envelopes.

The iPad is just controlling Ableton w/ Griid.
