Little Phatty OS Update

"Little Phatty Stage Edition

As you probably already know, the Stage Edition has the same great sound and appearance as the Tribute Edition, but at a lower price. The LEDs have an amber/red color scheme and the end plates are molded instead of wood. So, besides the price, what's new? The operating system! The Stage Edition's OS contains a host of new features that you requested (and a few we came up with), including built-in Sample & Hold and Noise modulation, a second modulation routing, and individual pitch up and down parameters. But here's the best part: presets now have their own 'Advanced' settings, so your can individually specify the number of filter poles, envelope release, filter sensitivity, etc., for each preset. And did I mention that we've added Pot Mapping, too? Now you can now program the four front-panel control knobs to any of the 128 MIDI Continuous Control parameters for internal or external control. Pretty cool, huh?

But wait, there's more! The new OS will soon be available for the Tribute Edition (free, of course), so TE owners can also take advantage of the new feature set!

We expect to be shipping the first Stage Editions by February."

Matrixsynth Voyager!

Well, not quite. : ) How I wish. But... we can pretend. Via MOOG Space:

"Select Series Voyagers.

We're now offering customized Voyagers! You can choose from 8 types of wood cabinets, and 5 different backlighting schemes. For all those who ever wanted to own a truely unique Voyager, now you have one built to your own specifications!"

I *think* there will be a green one in there. I should make Matrixsynth stickers for them. ; )

Midisticks

This one not via NAMM. It was sent in on the Synthsights alias, and I thought it was interesting. I couldn't find an image on site, so if you know of one feel free to comment.

What is it?

"Midisticks : A drum kit without drums. When you use the sticks, the World around you becomes the drums.

Confused? You're not alone. Children accept something out of the ordinary or unexpected as magic, and get on with the important task of playing.

Midisticks are an innovative electronic percussion MIDI trigger.

Midisticks are drumsticks that detect the material that they are being played on and generate MIDI messages.

Midisticks are sensitive: The softer you hit a material, the lower (quieter) the triggered MIDI velocity.

Midisticks are programmable. Many different materials can be programmed and mapped to MIDI triggers. Many of the materials recognized are found in the typical studio, household, rehearsal room or bar.

After programming, when a recognized material is struck again, the pre-assigned MIDI trigger is generated.

Example:

Tap on a drum practice pad, and train the sticks to generate a Snare Drum MIDI trigger.
Tap on a pad of paper and assign that to a tom tom.
Tap on a mouse mat and assign that to be a cowbell.

Each of the Midisticks behaves as a separate instrument - That's to say that each stick can be assigned to generate a different MIDI trigger for the same material.

Waldorf Stromberg Plug-ins

I finally got around to looking at the Waldorf pdf in more detail. There's been a bit of buzz around the plug-in capability. This image shows you two hardware plug-ins in the back of the synth, the valve and the a-filter. According to the brochure these are fully analog, not digital VA plug-ins. What Makes an Envelope Snappy

Florian posted the following to AH. I thought it was probably the most detailed explanation I've come across on what makes an envelope snappy. I asked him if it would be ok to put it up here for others and the archives, and he gave the thumbs up. He also mentioned that the following is basically a short resume from some chapters of his book "Synthesizer." You can find it on amazon. Unfortunately for those of us who do not speak German, it is in German only. I wonder if there's pictures. : )

What Makes an Envelope Snappy:
"There are several aspects:
1.) Speed, shape, of envelope
2.) envelope amount and offset value destination of destination
parameter, sustainlevel (in case of ADSR),
3.) characteristics of modulation,
4.) synchronisation with waveform.

First aspect:
In analogue envelopes (created by loading unloading a capacitor) speed
and shape are related to each other. If whe look at decay, the same
decay value at the beginning of the decayphase causes a much faster
change than at the end of the decay phase, because of the exponential
unloading characteristics of the capacitor.

Second aspect (All values in the following examples from
0=shortest/lowest to 100=longest/highest):
If we now modulate a filte with such an envelope like A=0, D=10, S=0,
R=0. If the cutoff frequency is already at 500Hz), and the envelope
amount is very high - lets say 5 octaves. THis will cause the filter to
open up to 16000 Hz and back to 500 Hz. The most noticable change will
happen between 2000Hz and 500Hz, all above is simply "bright". So all
the fast part of the exponential envelope will happen whil you don't
realize it. And only the slow end of the decay curve will cause a
noticable change. So even if your envelope in general is "fast like
hell", you will destroy this, by wrong modulation settings on the
destination.

Third aspect:
Next question is: how does the destination react on the envelope. A good
example are VCAs, which are available with linear and exponential
characteristics. Our loudness recognition is basically logarithmic. So
We need exponential controls for volume. Since analogue envelopes
already have exponential characteritics, you can use a linear VCA, which
translates the exponential change of the envelope direct to the signals
amplitude change. But for linear changing LFO waveforms you need a
exponentiator, which translates the linear changing waveform to a
exponentially changing waveform and then modulates the amplitude.
Now: If you use a exponential VCA for envelope modulation, you will have
a double exponential function, which will increase the "snappyness" of
the envelopemodulation (but will increase also the effect, which is
described in the second aspect).

Fourth aspect:
Whether a envelope is felt as snappy or has a click in the beginning,
depends also very much on the synchronisation with the waveform of the
VCO(s). Especially if the VCOs tend to eliminate by interference its
often a good idea to patch the gate to the Hardsync in, which causes the
VCO to start at each keypress at a dedicated point of the waveform.

New Korg Legacy Samples are Up

"Mono/Poly software synthesizer
The Mono/Poly, a four-VCO monophonic/polyphonic synthesizer that went on sale in 1981 was considered the culmination of Korg’s experience building analog synthesizers. It was released at the same time as the Polysix, and because of their capabilities as well as their price, these two instruments caused a revolution in the synthesizer world. Many musicians acclaimed the Mono/Poly as one of Korg’s best synthesizers, with a number of unique characteristics.

t provided four VCOs, each providing adjustable pitch, waveform, octave, and level, which could be stacked together for massive sounds, or cycled through one at a time for constantly shifting timbres. Together with one VCF, one VCA, two EGs, and two MGs it delivered a powerful yet accessible programming structure. But by far, its most signature characteristics were the Synchro and Cross Modulation functions that could run dual, or four-way cascaded modulation routings for creating revolutionary and aggressive tonal effects. It also featured the same futuristic Chord Memory and Arpeggiator functions as the Polysix. This diversity of parameters could be used to create an incredible universe of sounds ranging from thick and rich to sound-effect-like.

Along with being a complete reproduction of the original Mono/Poly, this new software version extends the Mono/Poly to its ultimate form. It features 128-voice polyphony with up to 16-voice unison, and a powerful eight-way virtual patching matrix. The virtual patch functionality lets you use 159 different modulation sources such as MG, EG, velocity, and keyboard tracking to modulate 35 different destinations such as oscillator pitch, level, filter, MG, or EG, giving you an awesome capability for creating complex and diverse sounds."

This was the last analog synth Yamaha synth made according to most websites before moving to all digital with the DX-7. A very cool little synth with lots of sliders to play with. It has pitch bend and modulation wheels, breath control(if you can find one of those rare breath controllers). There are 5 waves to choose from as well as resonance. Everything works great and it's totally fun to play with. This may look like a toy, but it's got a lot of neat sounds to work with. By the way there is no memory to store sounds, so you have to move sliders to change the sounds, but it is easy to make up new sounds. It can use a DC9-12 power adapter with center pin postive, but it does not come with one, even though i tested to make sure it works. Jam: "It's a small world" for machines (mini-tour of studio)

And one more sent my way via shagghie.

"A rare mini tour of Shagghie's studio. Kind of like "it's a small world" for machines. I'm just letting them talk here...haven't done much to tame them or get them all to speak the same language, even if at the least they are all on the same clock. :)"

SunSyn meets Magneto-Tube Random Noise Gen!

Another sent my way via shagghie.

"Went by the surplus store today and scored a gem of a module...a vintage HH Scott model 811-B Random Noise Generator... This thing is sick. So of course I ran it through my SunSyn and let the noise modulate the LPF Cutoff Freq. Here's the lofi version..hifi version up shortly after. Thing has ASA, RF, AF, and LF noise modes...anyone know what those stand for?"

Post War Jam (Cyndustries Entry #1)

YouTube via shagghie.

"This mini performance came in 3rd place in the cyndustries.com 'War and Peace' bug music competition. Tries to capture the sorrow and distortion of life after WWIII, yet the need to still express no matter what the world's circumstance. All live, no samples, no loops. Wish camera mic picked up bass freqs better...the mp3 on Cynthia's site has 'proper' audio, fwiw.
Gear used:
MachineDrum fed through Micromoog filters.
MEK (2 seqences internal, 2 send via midi to SunSyn)
SunSyn - Pad sequence.
KP3- Used for grain delay treatment on treated MachineDrum beat through Micromoog.
Spectralis- Backbeat and light bass synth line
MEK - Dischorded bass line intro"

"For the curious: Ran some of the machinedrum through the micromoog's filter, while the MEK takes care of sequencing itself and one of the SunSyn voices. The Spectralis handles some backbeat and basic bass accents. I don't think a lot of folks realize just how powerful that micromoog can be in the hands of a noise freak. There's a 'pure' audio .mp3 on the Cyndustri's site, too: link"
