PPG Wave 2.2, Wave 2.3 and EVU: System V8.3

"This new and progressive operating system improves your PPG!

V8.3 is our consistent development of our successful V8.0. Like V8.0 the new V8.3 system offers comprehensive SysEx support which allows saving your own sounds via MIDI to an external computer device. Formerly this was only possible with an expensive Waveterm computer device. Via MIDI SysEx datagrams the PPG synthesizer will communicate with an external MIDI library, like the Emagic SoundDiver.

Additionally our current V8.3 system convinces with many new and helpful functions, removes annoying problems of the old PPG system V6.0 and offers an improved MIDI timing.

Performance features of V8.3 - the evolution from V6.0 / V8.0
V8.3 offers following new features which are a clear improvement in comparison to previous old systems:

*Comfortable handling of the extensive V8.0 SysEx functions directly accessable form the PPG panel
*Accelerated MIDI timing due of improved MIDI code
*ANALOG-panel shows the value of the modulation wheel; essential for sound programming experts
*Extended V8.0 SysEx implementation for storing sounds on an external computer device
*PPG bus emulation over the MIDI interface; for PPG extremists and future applications
*During the boot process the display shows the version and serial number
*Extended user´s manual with new "quick start guide"

Additionally in V8.3 we improved the program code of the old official PPG release V6.0 and removed engraving software bugs:

*Arpeggiator bug of Wave 2.3 solved
*Initialisation problem of the Upper Wavetable solved
*Correction of the defective waveforms in Wavetable 13
*Several minor bug fixes (Sequencer quantization, arpeggiator mode, etc.)

Scope of supply
This kit consists of an easy understandable user-manual (english or german version) and 4 new chips. The original EPROMs in your Wave or EVU will be replaced by the new ones."

Burble

click here for a new Buchla 200e track from Chris Muir. Scroll when you get there; it's the first track on the list. You will find more under it as well.

"Burble is the combination of two little improvs that were done a few days apart. After I had recorded the less rhythmic, droney, layer I wondered if that rhythmic thing I had recorded a couple days earlier was in the same key and tempo enough to fit on top.

It wasn't, but I glued them together anyway. I go back and forth on whether to add a lead sound to this one. What do you think?

For this one, my system was augmented with a borrowed 259e waveform generator, which I used heavily. There's probably a lot less reverb & delay on this track than you think."

Off-the-record: Sonic Charge [ENG]

"This time our special guest is Magnus Lidström, the mind behind Propellerhead Reason 2's Malström synth and our beloved µTonic (or MicroTonic), released under its own Sonic Charge brand. Magnus is taking a little vacation in the deep forests of Småland (Sweden, of course!), where he's meditating on his next software...

hardware device? And what do you think of new interfaces/technologies like multi-touch screen, etc.?

I'd love to go hardware some day. There is just something magic about turning a real knob as opposed to using a mouse. One thing that bothers me about software is the way it quickly decomposes if it isn’t kept up-to-date by the manufacturer. Give it a few years without updates and you risk not being able to load it up anymore on your latest computer with the latest OS. Software loses value quickly this way, as opposed to hardware, which if kept in good condition can hold for decades, and actually increase in value. About future interface technologies I am really intrigued by the multi-touch interfaces you mention. The physical qwerty keyboard is for keeps (and physical MIDI-keys and knobs for that matter), but I’ll happily throw out the mouse any day."

PAiA 9710K VCA/LFO/Envelope Walkthrough - Part 1

"To the uninitiated PAiA is a US based Electronics kit manufacturer that specializes in audio kits including synths, theremins, a vocoder, various guitar effects, and Preamps. The 9700s is a powerful modular synthesizer that they carry that has 4 sections or modules. I’ve already built the 9700K MIDI2CV8 Midi to control voltage converter (Converts regular midi data into control voltages suitable for manipulating analog synthesizers) and found it really fun and much easier to build than I had initially thought. I learned a lot about electronics and I think I picked up a new hobby!

The 9710 is the VCA (voltage controlled amplifier) module. This module shapes the sound of the synth with an envelope. The PAiA VCA module comes with a noise source and can be used as an LFO (low frequency oscillator) to modulate other aspects of the audio that you are processing with it."

Seiko DS 310 Synthesizer Programmer's Guide

via this auction

"This Original vintage 1970`s Seiko Programmers Guide is just what you are looking for! For the DS-310 Synthesizer. 21 pages that tell you how to get the sound you want. Was part of the inventory of Des Moines Music House and has been carefully stored for 30 years."

Again this seller has a ton of vintage documentation up for auction. Too much for me to grab all the shots from, so I will only be putting up the stuff that I find, really, really interesating. A synth by Seiko, the watch company, for example.

Update via Till "Qwave" Kopper in the comments:
"The Seiko DS310 additive synthesis add-on module (son on the pic as the left unitbehind the main keyboard) for the DS202 was the most affordable way to use additive synthesis in the mid eighties (released 1983?).
It had only 4 memory slots for sounds. You had 16 harmonic and three specrums per sound. A kind of preselection envelope with only 2 or three parameters was used as volume envelope. And at the same time it cross fades the three spectrums at staic point in the envelope. A typical ADSR envelope shpae would use one spectrum for the attack, would cross fade in the decay time to the sustain specrum and would crossfade to the third spectrum in the release section. At least, this is my memory.

I sold it to gain money for my first PPG wave 2.2 in 1987.

The other unit shown here is the sequencer add-on module on the right. Not seen to often."

Circuit Bent Electronic Drums by 3Xfx

images via this auction

"It is fully loaded with 4 drum pads, 2 cymbal pads, and a foot pedal. Each pad, with the exception of one of the cymbals and the foot pedal, is assignable to quite a few different sounds (i.e. 4 different snare sounds, 6 different tom sounds, handclaps, etc.). The bass and cymbal sounds that are not changeable are able to be affected by the various bends.

There are 8 different styles of preprogrammed beats each with 2 different main beats. You can also play only the beat, only the backing music, or both together.

The other functions of this instrument are the keyboard scratchpad and headset mic. These features are affected by the distortion bends, including the mic input! There are several different selectable scratchpad sounds, and 4 different keyboard sounds.

The bends include 4 distortion switches, which can be used individually or in various combinations for nice distortion sounds. In combinations they also affect the tone of the sounds. There is also a knob for pitch adjustment, with on/off switch, which affects most of the units sounds, from demonic lows to chipmunk highs. One thing to note is that the pitch control does only affects the bass drum and crash cymbal of the electronic drumset sounds. Luckily there are enough sounds to assign to the other drum pads that actually sound pretty good, plus the distortion switches affect all the units sounds. There is also a 1/4 inch output that switches the speaker off.

The sound clips below were recorded from the ouyput directly into the mixer without any additional effects. The first track is me playing the electronic drums and the next 2 are having fun with the preprogrammed beats. Enjoy!

Kurzweil K2000 Buchla Waveshaping

via Javier as a follow up to this post:

"Hearing those buchla comparison reminded me the waveshaping capabilities of my beloved K2000, so I tried to make a similar sound. I´m not saying it sounds identical or anything like that, but it could be more alike with some more time for fine-tuning. (envs are faster as it plays higher, etc). I did it listening to '259_Timbre_Sweep.mp3', but I think it sounds more like '261e_Timbre_Sweep.mp3'." Links in the previous post.

Memorymoon and Mesiah Synthesizers

"Memorymoon is inspired by the classic synthesizers. The sound is powerful. It has 6 voicecards with 3 oscillators, noise oscillator, amp and 2 filters. Settings above 5V in the mixer introduces overdrive.

Features include: 6 voice unison. Osc sync. Many envelope curves. Graphic envelopes. Arpeggiator and trancegate. Hold function. LFO, Voice-LFO, and Delay-time can be synced to host clock or to tapped tempo. You can tap tempo with a sustainpedal or with a button.

There is "voice-card drift" settings for tune, amp, filter cutoff and pulse width. So each voice-card can sound slightly different. It is also possible to play soundfonts and drum-loops in wav-format. This is intended for live performance."

"The main focus in the design of Messiah was low CPU. The audio part of the synth engine has only modules by Chris Kerry hand coded in Microsoft assembly language for low CPU (the effect section has modules by other developers).

The design is inspired by Prophet5, but instead of saw, tri and pulse oscillators it has 3 innovative oscillators: Morph oscillator with 4 waveforms, unison oscillator with 7 voices (and you can put this oscillator into 5 voice unison for 35 voices), and flexi oscillator that consist of 2 seperate waves that can perform PWM, ring mod. and phase distortion with very low CPU."

"This month, we have an excellent lineup featuring Richard Lainhart (performing with incredible rig of old analog electronic gear), Rui Pereira, and Syadu Oosepfri. Be aware - tranzducer will be taking a little hiatus following this next show… all the more reason to make it down for tranzducer.011!

Richard Lainhart is an award-winning composer, author, and filmmaker-a digital artisan who works with sonic and visual data. Since childhood, he’s been interested in natural processes such as waves, flames and clouds, in harmonics and harmony, and in creative interactions with machines, using them as compositional methods to present sounds that are as beautiful as he can make them. “Lainhart crafts sounds in a tonal, musical fashion- sustained tones, drones, melodic fragments-and electronically manipulates them into beautiful tapestries of sound” (Waterfront Week). [His] “music reflects the spirit of possibility that once defined electronicmusic, bringing with it a sense of past, present and future that transcends time, technology and cultural assumptions. The spell-binding music seemed to evoke feelings that can’t quite be named, and suggest music I might rather imagine for myself in silence than trust most composers to compose” (The Village Voice). “He’s evolveda singular vision as a composer, performer and engineer of darkly seductive minimalism” (Peter Marsh, BBC)."

Elektron Monomachine and Machinedrum MKII

"The Machinedrum SPS-1 MKII combines extremely flexible drum synthesis with a powerful percussion sequencer. It is equipped with four MD-synths, each with its own special sonic flavor. You will have no problem conjuring forth sub-sonic kicks, snappy snares or wild FX. To add further control over the sounds, 16 LFO's are available. The possibilities to sculpt new percussive sounds are near limitless. Be warned though, the Machinedrum can be seriously addicting and no rehab is currently available.

Sequencing is the middle name of the Machinedrum. Use the SPS-1 MKII to control both your internal sounds as well as your external MIDI equipment in great detail. It runs the show, both literally and figuratively speaking.

The MKII version adds a lot to the already feature-packed SPS-1. Slimmer design, world wide switching power supply, even better signal to noise ratio and last but certainly not least – the pattern sequencer now has 64 steps!"

"Monomachine SFX-60 MKII - the one and only BeatBox synthesizer. Five different types of specialized synthesis methods ensure a deep and versatile sound creating machine. Try out the SID-chip emulation, feel the strength of the SuperWave basslines or create beat box style drum patterns. This machine can even talk! It is almost scary. The six available tracks can be loaded with any of the featured synthesis methods. The three LFO's, an adjustable filter, a delay and an advanced arpeggiator per track will guarantee wild synthesis action!

The sounds and melodies hidden inside of you will not be hindered by any clumsy interfaces or confusing menus. Every necessary parameter is close at hand. The Monomachine SFX-60 MKII is a direct link to the right side of your brain. Man and machine in perfect harmony!

The SFX-60 MKII is quite an update compared to the previous Monomachine model. Slimmer design, world wide switching power supply, even better signal to noise ratio and maybe the king among features – the possibility to load your own waveforms*. That’s right. For the first time ever you can use your own customised wavetables in the Monomachine environment. Get ready for total control!"

KORG KAOSS Pad KP3 OS Version 2

"Korg has just released the new KP3 Kaoss Pad Version 2.0, which offers a whole selection of user-requested features and provides a number of additional improvements to functionality.

The KP3 built on the KAOSS legacy with added capability and features. Now, say Korg, version 2.0 for the KP3 takes those features even further, providing greater flexibility in the areas of effects and sampling functionality. The Version 2.0 package, which includes the version upgrade, a newly revised 2.0 Editor Librarian for Mac and PC and all instructional documents is available worldwide as a free download from your local Korg website.

Additions/Improvements:
* Sample Playback Trigger Functions Add Versatility
New sample trigger options have been implemented to provide greater control over looped samples. The new Gate function plays a sample only as long as you are pressing the sample pad. You can also decide whether the sample is retriggered from the beginning or plays continuously. Furthermore, the trigger type can be assigned per-sample pad.

* Polyphonic Sample Edit Mode Streamlines Sample Mixing
The four samples can now be played simultaneously, and this allows for volume mixing of all samples in the Sample Edit mode. Additionally, triggering and muting of samples can be controlled in real-time while in this mode.

* Additional Loop Type Offers Greater Rhythmic Possibilities
A new loop selection offers greater control over how a sample retriggers when using one of the loop programs involving the touch pad. Now, the starting point of the sample can be changed depending on how you drag your finger across the touch pad.

* KP3 Editor Version 2.0
KP3 Version 2.0 works in tandem with the new Version 2.0 Editor Librarian. All previously mentioned functions are now represented in the Editor Librarian program, which works for both Mac and PC.

259 vs. 261e Audio Comparisons

follow up to this post.

via REwire:
"These are 5 each patch comparisons of my Buchla 259 and 261e. Each is a 320mbps mp3 file about 15 - 30 seconds each. No routing through a filter, just a Plan-B Model 13 Multi-timbral Gate, a vactrol based copy of the 292e.

Main Osc - Sweeping all three parameters of the Main Osc.
259_Tweaking.mp3
261e_Tweaking.mp3

Assigning the Mod Osc to Amplitude and Pitch of Main Osc. The 261e Mod Osc has no Sawtooth so can't slam like the 259 because the 259 has Vactrols in it's internal VCA, like the 292. I used a tight rectangle on the 261e to get close:
259_Amp_n_Pitch_Mod.mp3
261e_Amp_n_Pitch_Mod.mp3

The Modulation Osc at Pitch Levels. For 259, using switch between Saw, Pulse and Tri.261e has waveshaper between Sine and Rectangle
259_Modulation_Osc.mp3
261e_Modulation_Osc.mp3

My conclusion. They are definitely the same breed and go into similar sonic territory. The 261e has a more functional modulation Osc but no actual sawtooth. The main osc on the 261e can go many more sonic places but can't make a heavy analog sound like 259's meaty sawtooth."

Jean-Jacques Perrey and Dana Countryman's A Troll's Story

PRESS RELEASE:

"Jean-Jacques Perrey and Dana Countryman have released a web-based children's story called "Troll's Story".

Perrey and Countryman wrote the text for the children's book and scored all the original music, and they have made both the text and music available for free downloading on the internet.

It can be found here

The narrator for the children's story is Tricia Meier-Countryman. The project is a spin-off from Perrey and Countryman's recent Oglio Records CD "The Happy Electropop Music Machine." The duo re-edited and re-scored their original synthesizer music to fit the story, which was written and inspired by their original "Troll's Story" music from the Oglio CD.

Perrey and Countryman are making the project a free download, to be enjoyed by children of all ages.

To find out more about "The Happy Electropop Music Machine", go to: link

Artist Information:
Jean Jacques Perrey: Synthesizer.com synthesizer, Moog synthesizers and Ondioline Dana Countryman: Synthesizers.com synthesizer.

Jean Jacques Perrey is a legend in the electronic music field as a pioneer of that genre. He was the SECOND musician to ever own and record with the Moog Synthesizer, back in 1967. His music has been sampled by countless popular acts, including Ice T, Gangstarr and Fatboy Slim. At age 78, he is still creating and still touring.

Perrey's musical partner is arranger and musician Dana Countryman, who co-composed the music and co-wrote the story for "Troll's Story."
Perrey and Countryman released their first CD for Oglio Records, "The Happy Electropop Music Machine" in 2006.
It is available on Amazon.com and on iTunes.com, among many other outlets.

The duo are currently writing and recording their next CD for Oglio Records, due out in the summer of 2009. In the last year and a half, Perrey and Countryman have performed in Berlin, Seattle, San Francisco, Hollywood, Amsterdam, Russia, France and Norway. They are heading off to England next."

You can also find more info on Jean-Jacques Perrey and Dana Countryman in these previous posts.

Update: some notes on the instruments used via Dana:
"We predominately used my big modular from Synthesizers.com. We also used my Korg MS-2000R a lot. My loyal DX-7 was used (sparingly), especially for the bass line in the "Furioso Disco" section. I also love it for it's "organ" sounds and bells. Jean-Jacques played his trademark Ondioline for the solo in the first segment ("Morning Theme".) In addition, we ran samples through Reason, mostly for JJ's crazy "tape loops". Analog, digital: whatever it takes to get the 'sound.'"

BTW, mention you saw it on MATRIXSYNTH if you order one. I'm curious how many JH gets from here vs. AH. No I'm not competing, no I don't get anything out of this and no, it's not for boosting my ego. I'm just curious people. If you feel weird about mentioning it, then don't.

"Wurlitzer "super-sprite" funmaker. It's a 70s console organ with built in drum machine and speakers. It has buttons labeled with things like "magic chords" and "latin". Of all the keyboards in the studio, thats the first one to get played when someone new comes over. It;s a one man fun band - especially when the Echoplex has its way with it."

Devi Ever : Effector 13 - Spectacular Aenima - white noise

"This is what the SP AE does if you have nothing plugged in and tweak it just right. Go a little too far one way or the other though and you get crazy oscillation (sometimes sounds like radio interference though!) Check out the end with a little sub oscillation trying to break in, sounds like heavy winds over loading a microphone."

Digital Dub Siren by Oceanus

Cakewalk Founder Greg Hendershott Interview on CDM

"I think when I was there [Oberlin College] we got the first [Yamaha] DX7 [synthesizer]. That came into the lab, and everyone was really excited — and totally baffled about how to program it, because we were used to the Moog modular kind of synths where you literally had the patch cords around your necks and were making patches by [connecting] cords. So, to figure out FM synthesis was a little tricky. Working with a big modular synth was tactile and interactive. And then you had this small screen."

360 Systems Spectre Guitar Synth

images via this auction

"360 Systems Spectre Guitar Synthesizer circa 1978. Unit in original tolex case, no manual what you see is what you get. Unit was modified to respond to CV/Gate inputs. I did not preform this mod so I cannot answer any questions other than it does respond to standard 1 V per octave CV and gate from an Arp Sequencer. This is essentailly an Oberheim SEM in a portable tolex case minus one envelope gen, you might be able to mod it and add the second envelope as the boards are original Oberheim SEM 'A'."
