ooscc prototype

YouTube via eaced
"ooscc is the open open sound control controller. This ooscc sends OSC messages over ethernet based on analog inputs. More information at experimentalistsanonymous.com/ooscc"

"ooscc:
* stands for open open sound control controller.
* is an open source/hardware controller that communicates via the open sound control protocol.
* is intended as a replacement for common MIDI controllers.
* is meant to help DIYers transition from MIDI to better methods of communication.
* communicates via ethernet (via wi-fi is a future goal).
* can be powered by USB or a 5V DC adapter. Battery power is also a possibility.
* is open-ended, and will eventually allow interfacing with both analog and digital inputs and outputs.
* is currently very much in beta stages.

Here is the first ooscc made, which has 32 analog inputs (adc channels). 24 of them are wired as pots, and 8 are faders (all non-motorized). The potentiometers could be replaced with any (0-3.3V) voltage source. In order to accomodate more or less analog inputs, the hardware and firmware would have to be modified slightly. For more information about the architecture of the ooscc, go to the technical page."

Electrocomp EML-101

via this auction

"EML 101 is a 4 osc monosynth. Its semi modular so you can make sounds without patch cords if you like. There is a multimode sweepable 12db filter 2 envelopes , a ring modulator that can be mixed in with a knob, a great sample and hold which can sample a number of sources, an external input for processing sounds as well as a noise generator. One unique feature is the keys/oct knob which allows you to play different types of scales. The keyboard is very easy to use, the modulation amount knobs go in either direction to either the lfo or the sample and hold. Each osc has octave switches and fine tuning like a minimoog. The synth sounds like it looks, basically a cross between a moog/arp and electronic test equipment... It really has its own thing going on. It can do some moogy leads but its not really its forte. Fans of early electronica like raymond scott will love it; its very electric and a bit raw. Four oscillator sounds are ridiculously thick, and the filter is a joy to use sounds very SEM ish. You can get great percussive patterns with the sample and hold and filter resonance. The ring mod is quite evil, can do 'machine' noises and sound effects very well. All in all a unique keyboard that folds up into a small box."

"Technical Details:
The left-hand side of the unit contains the Sequencer. It is easy to use. The lower wide knobs control SEM #1, and the upper thin knobs control SEM #2. This allows for harmonies to the sequenced sounds, or doubling up of the sound for more powerful sequences. There is also a Sample & Hold (S/H) feature to the sequencer.

The External X/Y Controller Box controls the VCF’s (Voltage Controlled Filters), and the VCO’s (Voltage Controlled Oscillators). When the joystick is moved in the “X” left to right, it controls the VCO’s, changing the frequency. When moved up and down in the “Y”, it opens and closes the VCF’s. It makes for some very interesting sounds.

The two SEM’s (Synthesizer Expander Modules) allow for two-voice (two key) capability. Each SEM has two oscillators, which can be controlled separately, or synchronized by simply flipping the “Sync” switch. The SEM’s can also be used in unison, which makes for a very fat sound."

Bebe Barron's Mixed Emotions

via Peter Grenader of Plan B:

"In 2000, Curtis Roads, composer, director of the of the electronic music department at UCSB and ex-editor of The Computer Music Journal commissioned his friend Bebe Barron to compose a piece of music at UCSB's CREATE studios.

At first Bebe was hesitant to do this, but at the arguing of Barry Schrader, over a six week period with the technical assistance of composer Jane Brokman, Bebe did in fact compose what was to be her last body of work, aptly entitled 'Mixed Emotions'

Although digital, it has a remarkable analog quality to it, akin to the timbres we would expect from the Barrons. You can hear Bebe speaking about these similarities in a taped audio interview which is still accessible at npr.org (search Barron once on the site, you'll see the link).

Until recently Mixed Emotions was heard only by those who attended it's premier at UCSB and at the 2001 SCREAM Festival at CalArts. Earlier this year however, Leonard Newbauer (Bebe's husband) commissioned a gentleman by the name of Mario Salinas to tape and produce a video of her memorial. In it they included Mixed Emotions, which is accompanied by some really interesting video graphics. The presentation is great. Without hesitation I can say that Bebe would be very pleased.

After some discussion, I have received approval from Leonard to release the Mixed Emotions section of the memorial DVD to the internet. It will be officially premiered on Matrixsynth in the next few days and will take permanent residence on my You Tube space:

http://www.youtube.com/user/petergrenader

Keep your eyes and ears tuned for this significant body of work - the last from legend and first lady of electronic music, Bebe Barron.

- Peter Grenader"

For more info on Bebe Barron's influence and legacy see this post.

Update via Mike in the comments: "And don't forget that Wendy Carlos just posted a lovely tribute to Bebe Barron on her own website: http://www.wendycarlos.com/people/BebeNYC/index.html"

Chamberlin Rhythmmate

images via this auction
"late '60s CHAMBERLIN RHYTHMATE TAPE LOOP DRUM MACHINE. I purchased this item new at the Chamberlin exhibit at the 1968 NAMM show at the Chicago Hilton. I used and performed with it for maybe 3 - 4 months. It sounded great. I then put it aside and played in several bands that had drummers. It sat on a back stockroom shelf wrapped in plastic for 40 years. The unit still works fine. Sometimes you have to "coax" the tape to run by pressing gently on the drive roller. The unit has either 14 or 16 different tracks. The movable head designates which track is playing. There is a top mounted tempo control, volume control and a tone control located on the bottom of the unit. There is a number on the bottom of the unit : 25 618 I'm not sure what that number means. It measures 6 X 8 X 4 1/2 inches and is in excellent condition. It does NOT have scrapes, scratches or wear & tear marks. It is AC powered and does not require any adapters. There is NO internal speaker. It hooks up to an amp like any current model drum machne. A hookup cable is included. It does NOT PLAY IN STEREO ! The tape in the unit is a rock style. There is a SECOND TAPE included which should have latins and traditional '60's beats. I was told that the inventor of this unit also designed the famous "Mellotron" from the '70's."

Vintage Soundchaser Apple II Synthesizer / Keyboard

Steiner Synthacon

images via this auction

"This has 3 VCOs (2 waveforms each), VCF, VCA, 2 Envelope Generators, noise generator and S&H.

From the spec sheet:
WAVEFORMS: Sawtooth, triangle, square wave, pulse, sine wave, and two types of noise (white and pink).
OSCILLATORS: Three Voltage Controlled Oscillators plus a White/Pink Noise Generator.
CONTROLS: 26 knobs, 3 trimmers and 43 switches.
SECTIONS: Ten; KBD/PWR, Sample and Hold, Trigger Generator, Dual Envelope Generator, Voltage Controlled Amplifier, Three Mode Filter, Noise Generator, VCO No. 1, VCO No. 2, VCO No. 3.
OSCILLATOR RANGES: From less than 1/10 cycle per second (Hertz) to greater than 20,000 cycles per second.
DYNAMIC RANGE OF OSCILLATORS: A minimum of 17 1/2 octaves.
FILTER MODES: Low Pass, Band Pass, High Pass.
FILTER CONTROLS: Resonance (Q), Frequency, Mode.
FILTER: The three mode variable Q filter can be switched in or out separately for each sound source.

Inputs/outputs are 1/4" phone jacks and a 6-conductor jones socket on the top as well as a 4-conductor jones socket on the front (for a keyboard I think). There is a trim-pot on the back of the synth which (I think) means this a two-note ("duophonic") synth.

There are color-coded toggle switches in each section that handle the signal routing (yellow switches bring in signal from VCO3, blue from env2, gray from S&H, etc.)

Note that there is no keyboard -- this originally was used with a Guitorgan organ/guitar hybrid."

Moog Sonic 6

images via this auction
"This synth has 2 independent LFOs that can modulate various parts of the signal, and the results may be amazing, strange waveshapes that you can't get from most other synths. Plus there's a ring modulator and you can choose from various sources to mix together or ring-modulate. Both oscillators A&B and the Ring Modulator signals may be sent out the output bypassed from the filter, and you can also use the filter and mix the signals, filtered and unfiltered of these sound sources. You can use the external input with the ring modulator. There are many other things, like "duo-phonic" keyboard (actually Osc A can be switched to be controlled via lower keyboard notes or the same notes as Osc. B. The Oscillators can be controlled by the Keyboard or variously by the X&Y LFOs. There are many other features of this synth. It has a builtin speaker. You can play using the 1/4" monitor jack and/or the speaker and the headphones jack."

EMS Synthi A with AKS1 touch keyboard

And other EMS rarities here.
"In the museum there are three objects without any documentation. As one of the pictures shows they were probably made by Electric Music Studios te London. Researching the Internet, [EMS] didn't provide clear explanations. The three objects appear to be one musical instrument, but are not in a working condition, so this theory can't be tested. One object bears the name of its former owner, Mr. Lawrence Casserley, London. Melvin Poore, a Britsh composer living in Cologne, Germany, delivered the e-mail address of Mr. Casserley. The following illustrations of the objects were send to Mr. Casserley"

via Matt King Unique

"I found this fascinating page about the VCS1 and two other very early EMS products – and it’s not Don Banks’ VCS1 which I know you’ve covered previously. The comments from the previous owner and assorted EMS personnel/authorities are very informative."

Update via Matt King Unique:
"While we’re on an EMS roll - I found this yesterday too, a website from a 1970s UK computer centre where they developed ‘CASS’ software and an interface to control the VCS3 from one of their computers.

'The CASS (Computer Aided Sound Synthesis) package is provided to make soundtracks synchronised to computer generated films or to generate musical output from the computer. The programs are available on the Atlas PDPI5. The VCS3 synthesizer, further details of which can be found in the User's Guide, is used to realise the sounds.'"
