A Little FM Madness

YouTube via djangosfire | January 16, 2011 |

"Just experimenting here - creating a sound wash from simple tone to all out noise wall.... "Krell Speak" to Chaos. No VCF today... getting used to a new Metasonix R-51 Tube VCA/Distortion. I really like how it works the sound super-duper cool so far.

The patch is simply: Maths into R-51, Maths into Maths into Wogglebug into Dual Bissell into AFG into R-51 into Z5000."

Oscilloscope as waveform generator

YouTube via gordonjcp | January 16, 2011 |

"A quick demonstration of using an oscilloscope, a battery and a light-dependent resistor as an arbitrary waveform generator. When the light from the 'scope beam shines above the cardboard mask, the LDR turns the voltage down pulling the spot below the mask. Well, roughly. It turns out that the LDR doesn't respond very quickly, especially with a capacitive load.

The voltage was fed to the VCF input of a Korg Polysix which was playing a simple arpeggio. There's a bit of reverb on it too."

Analogue Solutions Telemark Synthesizer - Sound Creation: "Tweaking the Telemark"

YouTube via rezfilter | January 16, 2011 |

"Here's a rather lengthy (13 minutes!) session of sound tweaking on the Analogue Solutions semi-modular synthesizer, the Telemark. A variety of sound types are featured in order to demonstrate the flexibility of the synth.

An AS Oberkorn 16-step sequencer was used to control and modify various attributes of each sound (filters, pwm, vco) via the patching shown in each sound type.

Contextual beats were included to give a sense of sound application as well as to demonstrate the Telemark in a musical bed."

Roland Jupiter 4 with Mods

via this auction
"It is not a VCO on a chip... The VCOs are discrete (it actually uses the same kind of electronic piece as the early revision Minimoogs), rather than the on-chip design so many others went for soon after (Like the OB8, Prophets, Memorymoog etc). This gives it a really monstrous analog sound.

This unit was outfitted with a brilliant mod that allows CV/Gate control over each of the four voices. This is much more useful than simple midi as you can control this from analog sequencers, drum machines, a modular, or if you'd like, a midi to cv unit or silent way. I used this unit with Ableton Live and Silent Way running through a MOTU Ultralte MK3. I recommend using this with Silent Way as you have full control of each voice allows you to do things like apply LFOs to detune each voice. Nevermind what I said earlier; the most powerful sound is running CV/Gate into each of the 4 voices, dropping 2 voices down an octave and having LFOs subtly modulating the pitch on a few of the voices, therefore turning this into a 4 VCO discrete monosynth! It's astonishing the amount you can do with this. There are switches next to each set of CV/Gate so you can turn on and off the feature if you'd like. Sometimes, I'd like to just run one voice into the CV/Gate for a bassline and use the others to play melodies and such..."

EDP WASP Electronic Dream Plant Synthesizer

via this auction
"TECH BITS and GOOD BITS:- This is a Digital/Analogue, monophonic synth with 1 printed circuit board housing among many other things 2 x DCO oscillators with variable waveforms from ramp to pulse and a lovely square for drum n bass subby sounds! It has an awesome FILTER section which is an analogue, Voltage Controlled Filter. It is very powerful (listen to my track) and usefully has Lowpass, Hipass and Bandpass options, all with Q. There are controls for white noise, an envelope generator with attack, decay and sustain/repeat, a control envelope etc. Please do some research to understand the full extent of its functionality. In describing its sound, some people have described it as being even more impressive than a MiniMoog, however all I can say is that it sounds fantastic, producing huge, thick, warm, aggressive, powerful electronic noises and sounds when put through an amp, a bit of delay and reverb (on my track I have put the WASP through some reverb to create a nice room sound - as you can hear, the WASP records beautifully from its line out.

THE TECHNICAL ISSUES/BAD BITS:- The major issue is that my WASP suffers from 'DRONING WASP' syndrome, which means that on power up, the sound of the WASP is generated gradually (in terms of volume) without the use of the keyboard. The keyboard does not work. It never has during my ownership. I believe this may be down to a past humidity issue, though it could be anything and I am no expert. So, I have always used it to create continuous or 'oscillating' sounds. Therefore I can't say whether the Envelope Generator section works, or the glide, which would define the note onset, decay and sustain characteristics of a timbre..."

"Circuit Bent Casio PT-10 Keyboard by freeform delusion

The mods are:
Mono mini jack output (Speaker removed) - hook this up to your amp, mixer, PC or laptop

Red Pitch Down Knob - Take it down for splashing snares and bass drones!

On/Off/On Toggle Switch and Green Control Knob - The green knob is linked with the switch next to it. You can then choose two types of oscillating feedback. Choose left or right on the switch and turn the green knob clockwise.

Yellow Control Knob - Turning this knob clockwise will create a screaming feedback this doesn't need a switch to turn it on or off.

On/Off/On Toggle switch (next to yellow knob) - Press the switch left and it will create distortion effect, this does work best on the drums as the snare becomes harsh. Pressing this switch right it will switch on the LDR (photocell) feedback bend, this sounds similar to the green knob feedback but you can control this one like a theremin on its own or while playing the keyboard

As you can see, I have tried to pack so much into this keyboard, I've had to remove the speaker and put on a panel which is a battery cover form another keyboard, it just about covers where all the mods are. It is securely bolted and glued into place.

Keyboard has a few marks on it.

Runs on 4 AA Batteries"

"This is my third video demonstrating Steve Cooley's handmade 16-step MIDI controller, the Beatseqr. In this video I am showing how you can use the Beatseqr to simultaneously send MIDI information to multiple tracks/instruments in Logic. Then, using a control surface I can toggle those different instruments on and off.

With the four programable patterns available in the Beatseqr this allows for potentially huge number of pattern/instrument combinations.

For more info on the Beatseqr project visit http://www.beatseqr.com"

technics wsa synthesizer - some physical modelled sounds

"Here some sounds i created on the TECHNICS WSA synthesizer. As the WSA uses a simplified version of physical modelling, the sounds are very acoustic in character and always have some "alice in wonderland" feel to it.

The WSA is good for virtual percussive, stringed and or blown instruments. It also has some good sounding filters and fx unit."
