The YMO Music Computer

video upload by Alex Ball

"A look at the revolutionary Roland MC-8 from 1977 which was one of the earliest microprocessor-controlled digital sequencers. Around 200 of these units were made and they were extremely expensive.

As I've covered the history of this unit several times, I thought it would be interesting to follow in the footsteps of a band that made significant use of the MC-8, which was Yellow Magic Orchestra.

In the video we look at how the MC-8 works and use it to compose a track in the style of YMO using the techniques and (where possible) instruments that they used in the late 70s.

Thank you to my Patrons for their support. The track, stems and MC-8 data are available there.

THE CROSFOBERMORDULATOR - DO IT YOURSELF FULL KOSMO SYNTH VOICE

video upload by LOOK MUM NO COMPUTER

"The Crosfobermordulator is now out! Modular Synth Voice
more info here :-

"The Crosfobermordulator is a full synth voice in kosmo format, it was built after sharing a DIY how to video of making a DIY synth voice on breadboard link here, i took that design and i built on it a tad, to make a cross modulating funky synth voice with its own funky quirks, its not a do all synth voice! but it sure is funky. with 2 oscillators (one primary oscillator and a modulation oscillator that can also be a second oscillator, or even both at the same time, 1 low pass funky distorting harmonic filter, noise, 2 envelope generators and a voltage controlled depth of modulation which really opens up to some funky sounds!"

AudioPilz Built ReBirth FOR REAL and This Happened (Bad Gear)

video upload by AudioPilz

"Welcome to another non - Bad Gear episode. I built ReBirth for real and this happened. Propellerhead Rebirth RB-338, the iconic 90s music production software and virtual groovebox was my first electronic musical instrument. Since then I had the dream of reconstructing the classic setup consisting of a Roland TR-808, a Roland TR-909, two Roland TB-303 and specific set of effects. Can we recreate the software workflow, are the famous vintage instruments as great as anybody is telling you and is all this worth the hassle?

Buchla Touché (1980) – Hybrid Analog Keyboard Instrument

The following was sent in by Anastasia Chernysheva, a Ph.D. student at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

"In 1979, Donald Buchla invited experimental composer and his friend, David Rosenboom to collaborate on the design of a new, keyboard instrument with digital sound generation and hybrid, computer-controlled, analog outputs. The result was the Touché, released in the spring of 1980.

Among particular traits of the instrument are:
• flexibility in use – highly programmable, (64 programmable function parameters available), Touché offers a library of “instrument” structures that could be stored as “presets”;
• responsiveness – a user of Touché would enjoy a broad ability to program multiple stimuli and response structures in performance;
• non-linear waveshaping – Touché permits to produce an enormous range of sound with efficient means of control, i.e. using a small number of knobs

The guiding idea of the instrument design was to optimize it for live performance. The hybrid, digital-analog nature of Touché assumes the following.
• On the digital side: a sound-generating engine produced a wide range of timbre of sound possibilities with non-linear wave shaping techniques.
• On the analog side: a programmable analog circuit called Multiple Arbitrary Function Generator (MARF) enabled extensive control of all sound synthesis parameters.

Rosenboom’s recordings Future Travel (1981) and Daytime Viewing (1983) offer extensive exposure to some particular sound worlds created with the Touché. Other than being used for these recordings and in the recent release by Richard Smith a.k.a. Shusta Cults, (the current owner of Rosenboom’s Touché), the instrument barely may be heard in any other recording. Only 4 instruments exist today but just one of them is in the functional condition.

To learn more about the history and design of the instrument check out the lecture about Buchla Touché given at University of Illinois (2022). Technical parameters of the instrument may be found in the brochure for the instrument. Download the PDF here."

Mapper: map01/12/21 Chaotic Synthesizer Prototype Demonstration

video upload by Ryan Gaston

"A demonstration of map01/12/21, an electronic musical instrument that focuses on random, chaotic, and gestural interconnections between its constituent structures. map01/12/21 has been succeeded by map02/21, which offers nearly identical functionality; this video serves as an archival demonstration of the older prototype.

map01/12/21 combines three modules: the map01 Delta Scan Mapping Interface (a chaotic audio generator), the map12 Windowed Temporal Drag Processor (a dynamically re-writable audio buffer), and map21 Multiple Vector Source + Translation Matrix (a MIDI controller that combines two joysticks, sixteen random number generators, a timing generator, and a data routing matrix). map01 and map12 have been abandoned in favor of the newer map02 Delta Scan Mapping Interface + Windowed Temporal Drag Processor, which combines their functionality into a single device.

This improvisational demonstration highlights many of the unique possibilities of each of its constituent parts; ranging from blasts of noise to whistling tones, stuttered repeats, aliasing, goofy computer-generated bleeps, and gesturally-controlled chaos."

At Synthfest UK 2023, we caught up with Calc from Sequential, and he gave us the lowdown on the Prophet X. Now, you might be thinking, Prophet X? Haven't we seen that before? Well, you're right, but this hybrid instrument has been quietly making waves in the music world. It combines digital and analog elements, with digital oscillators and a unique twist in the form of multi-sample-based instruments. Yes, you heard that right, it's not just your run-of-the-mill synth; it's a full-on sampler too, boasting an impressive 50 gigabytes of memory for your custom samples. You can treat it like a rompler, a sample player, or even use those samples as oscillators, creating a whole new realm of sonic possibilities.

Plus, it's packed with stereo goodness, allowing you to explore a wide soundstage with ease. It's not your typical synth, and that's what makes its a favourute of Calc's

Advanced Synthesizer with Wavetable and Virtual Analog Engines, an Intuitive Sound Design Workflow, Expressive Hands-On Controls, Model Expansion Support, and More

Los Angeles, CA, Sept. 28, 2023 — Roland announces GAIA 2, an advanced synthesizer with a newly developed hybrid sound engine and a friendly panel layout that makes learning synthesis and exploring sound design easy and fun. Equipped with wavetable and virtual analog oscillators, interactive controls, 37 full-size keys, Model Expansion support, and other powerful features, GAIA 2 opens the door to an infinite universe of inspired creation.

GAIA 2’s diverse synthesis tools allow users to build familiar sounds and craft new voices never heard before. Reaching beyond previous designs, the wavetable oscillator can morph between multiple waveforms for everything from dramatic shifts to slowly evolving textures. Unique phase and shape modulation options are also available to distort waveforms and unleash cutting-edge textures with complex overtones. Complementing the wavetable oscillator are twin virtual analog oscillators, ready to reimagine past classics or sculpt the sounds of the future. From smooth tones reminiscent of vintage synths to edgy, biting leads to sci-fi soundscapes, GAIA 2 can do it.

GAIA 2 also supports Roland Model Expansions, which faithfully recreate iconic synthesizers from the company’s long history. With a dedicated button, users can instantly swap between the built-in sound engine and classics like the JUPITER-8 or JUNO-106. The SH-101 Model Expansion comes pre-installed, and many additional titles and accompanying Sound Packs are available on Roland Cloud.

GAIA 2’s logically organized panel encourages hands-on exploration and sonic discovery. The one-control-per-function layout and informative display enable instant programming without having to resort to creativity-killing menu diving. And with the streamlined knobs and white anodized aluminum panel, even the look is inspiring.

GAIA 2 features a touch-controlled Motional Pad that brings static sounds to life. Users can assign nearly any synth or effect parameter to each of the X/Y points and then morph between them by moving a finger on the pad. It’s also possible to record movements to create complex, modulated transformations.

The free-flowing sequencer in GAIA 2 lets users instantly capture their inspiration and realize their wildest visions. There’s also a cool Random Pattern feature to spark new ideas with spontaneous pattern creation.

GAIA 2 comes loaded with classic Roland effects to take sonic creations to the next level. Over 50 unique MFX types are available, plus a dedicated Chorus section for adding width and dimension. A powerful Reverb/Delay section features a new studio-grade Shimmer Reverb and many other high-quality effect types.

Via USB-C, GAIA 2 functions as an audio/MIDI interface for music production apps on a computer, smartphone, or tablet. The class-compliant connection is plug-and-play, with no driver installation needed. A USB Type-A port is also available for connecting a USB flash drive for data backup or a standard USB MIDI controller for extended operation.

GAIA 2 supports Roland Cloud Connect, an optional wireless adapter for browsing and downloading Roland Cloud content using a mobile device. A Roland Cloud Connect purchase also includes a year of Roland Cloud Pro membership with unlimited use of thousands of sounds, Model Expansions, and much more.

The optional CB-B37 Keyboard Bag for GAIA 2 provides durable, high-quality protection for the synthesizer while traveling and making music around town. This versatile bag also works with the JUPITER-Xm, legacy GAIA SH-01, and other 37-note keyboards.

Availability & Pricing

The Roland GAIA 2 is now available in the U.S. for $899.99.

L.E.P. Electronic Laboratories Arpoloop Development Update & A Call for Input

Check out L.E.P. Electronic Laboratories' upcoming Arpoloop. They reached out to me to let me know they are looking for someone to help with the user manual. Also if you have any suggestions on additional cv/trig in/out connectors you might find useful, feel freel to reach out them at tonight222 at gmail.com or their social links at the bottom of their website. Or you can leave a comment at the bottom of this post and I will relay it to them.

via L.E.P. Electronic Laboratories

"The final step on Arpoloop development, we add an eight step capacitor sequencer and one octave keyboard. Arpoloop final shape will be inspired by Minimoog with foldable voice board, in the photos the last not definitive prototype.

ArpoLoop it’s the newest creation of L.E.P. electronic laboratories.

After five or more years of development, the volcanic mind of our analog engineer Peppo Lasagna, created this unique instrument, virtually inspired by the Raymond Scott pioneer work.

ArpoLoop it’s a generative analog composer, an analog computer for musician, full-featured for creating algorithmic live music, letting you combine melodies and rhythm, thanks to the help of his Analog Intelligent Algorithm.

ArpoLoop is a full Analog synthesizer in 60HP, 7U format, with a built-in full analog rhythm and melody composer. With full Analog terminology, we mean we don’t use any digital component, like microprocessor or even CMOS counter IC like CD4040 etc. this guarantees you a living organic sound, always drifting to a new direction.

Since there is no microprocessor nor memory, it can not be programmed in the usual way, instead it can be set and guided to play a line whose parameters are user definable and virtually infinite.

With these features, ArpoLoop offers you a unique musical experience, where instead of programming your sequencer you are forced to play with him.

Each time you switch on your ArpoLoop he will respond to your state of mind, letting you compose the music of that moment, this is particularly notable when in our time the music was the first product of human creativity to digitally disappear, thus making the recorded music lose importance.

Like a pianist practices with his piano, you will practice with your ArpoLoop offering an always better improvised musical live performance.

ArpoLoop consist of different part and modules :
The Voice Board.
The Ramp Generator.
The Capacitor Sequencer.
The Note Generator.
The Rhythm Generator.
The Octave Keyboard.
Here is a list of its features:
-4 voltage controlled oscillators (VCO)
-VCO1 sine wave with sync and FM
-VCO2 sine wave with FM
-VCO3 sine wave with sync and FM
-VCO4 sine-square-sawtooth with LFO option
-4 cascadable voltage controlled amplifiers (VCA) controlled by envelope or ring modulated by a VCO
-3 Attack-Release envelope generators (ENV) with 3 modes of operation (GATE, REPEAT, TRIG)

Press Release follows:

"Synclavier Digital releases regenerated Synclavier® II trailblazer as timeless Regen desktop synthesizer bolstered by present-day DSP developments

NOVA SCOTIA, CANADA: soft-launched late last year to widespread critical acclaim at the Synthplex® synthesizer expo and electronic music festival hosted at the Marriott Convention Center in Burbank, CA, USA with pre-orders opening for fulfilment in 2023, timeless synthesis product manufacturer Synclavier Digital is proud to announce wider availability of Regen — released as a desktop synthesizer that is, in short, a real regeneration of New England Digital’s seminal Synclavier® II digital synthesizer that took the pro audio industry by storm when introduced in its initial incarnation in 1980 (evolving beyond that to blaze more technological trails with polyphonic sampling and, ultimately, DAW — Digital Audio Workstation — capabilities well before that term was invented, even), extended and enhanced to take advantage of the increased computing power available today to make it as compelling in a modern setting as the prohibitively pricey original did during its time (finding favour with top-tier film composers, record producers, and recording artists), while the considerable cost and size reductions associated with Regen’s present-day design criteria conversely position it well within reach of (almost) anyone — as of June 29…

Futuresonus Parva 2010 Black

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

It's hard to believe it's already been 12 years. You can find some demos in previous posts here.

"Parva by Futuresonus is an 8-voice digitally-controlled analog multi-timbral MPE-compatible polyphonic synthesizer. combining the warmth and fullness of true analog synthesis with the power, convenience and connectivity provided by a digital brain, Parva represents a huge step forward for desktop synthesizers. inside Parva are eight voice cards, each its own complete analog synthesizer, loaded with a plethora of incredible features:

3 digitally-controlled analog oscillators with a +/-5 octave range, hard sync and choice of triangle, variable-width sawtooth, and PWM waveforms
4 ADSR envelopes with choice of exponential and linear modes and looping option
4 LFOs with key-synced and free-running options and a wide variety of waveshapes including sine, saw, triangle, square, random and even stepped shapes
dual VCFs with 12 and 24dB LPF and HPF modes, a 12 dB BPF mode, self-oscillation and filter FM
to be clear - each voice has all the features listed above, and because Parva is multitimbral it's possible to distribute its 8 voices as desired across multiple patches simultaneously. on top of that, Parva is one of the very few hardware synthesizers to offer full MPE support. hook up a Linnstrument, Continuum, Sensel Morph or Roli Seaboard to unlock the incredible potential of per-voice velocity, pitch bend, pressure and modulation - and put it all to work just as you'd like with the Parva's 40-point internal modulation routing matrix!

in addition to its robust analog synthesis engine, Parva's hardware is geared towards maximum power and flexibility with minimum effort. Parva's main outputs and headphone output make simple L/R stereo synthesis a breeze, but each voice also has its own stereo 1/4" TRS line level output, enabling independent recording and effects processing of any or all of Parva's eight voices! the USB type B port makes connection to a computer host easy while standard 5-pin DIN MIDI I/O ports enable connection with controllers old and new. Parva's USB type A host port - a first among analog synthesizers! - enables direct support for USB MIDI controller connection. no more running power this way and signals that way. just plug and play!"

PPG Expansion voice unit EVU (PPG wave 2.3 in a rack)

video upload by synthlegends

"The EVU (Expansion Voice Unit) is basically a Wave 2.3 synthesizer without keyboard. It is developed as a predecessor of the Wave 2.3 to help the PPG system to get more voices. It is also superior to the then current Wave 2.2 in that it is 8-voice multitimbral and already has 12-bit technology. Each of the 8 voices can be adjusted separately in volume and pan position. Usually it has to be connected via the computer interface to the Waveterm and also a PPG wave synthesizer and the sounds can be controlled from there. So you have a 16 voice PPG. In my studio I don't have a Waveterm so I controlled this EVU via MIDI. This unit has the latest Firmware 8.3 so you also can control it with any MIDI Keyboard, but it lacks the sound tweaking. The EVU were very rare. The last I saw in as a auction on ebay was 7 years ago. There were maybe only around 50 units built. This unit is mint and I think to sell it, because I have no waveform unfortunately."
