it consists of Mono and Stereo multi mode filters. both can be used in series, or independently. there’s also built in phaser and distortion.

filters can be fully midi controlled, the unit has midi i/o/thru, but there‘s also built in lfo and envelope, and they can be midi synced, with beat division option; they also can be triggered by midi, or the envelope can be even manually triggered.

"The MFC42 is a true analog filter module designed by Akai for its MPC series equipment. However, you can use it to process any sound source, since it has basic 1/4 "inputs and outputs and MIDI.It has genuine analog filters for that warmer tone with the Lowpass, Highpass, Bandpass and Notch filter types. It consists of a MONO filter section and the STEREO filter section.The MONO section offers 2, 4 and 8 pole filter slopes.The STEREO section offers 2 and 4 pole filter slopes.The 8-pole slope of MONO It uses the entire filter circuit, so the STEREO section is not active, and the MONO section is inactive when the STEREO section is in 4-pole mode, but when both sections are used simultaneously, they can be linked so that the MONO filter control knobs control the MONO and STEREO sections.The link can also be inverted, so that the two sections sweep in opposite directions.

Other features include an ADSR envelope for the filter contour. This envelope can be activated by the MIDI button and Trigger"

These always gave me the impression of two 1U rack units stacked on top of each other. It's actually one unit with a black line dividing the two sections down the middle.

"Rare analogue filter module made as the perfect partner for the MPC 2000XL, but can be used with any sampler, synthesizer or other studio equipment (fits in a standard 19" rack).

It has a phono input stage so you can plug a turntable straight into it for sampling into old MPCs or other samplers... if only I'd owned this and my old 2000XL at the same time, I would never have let the 2KXL go!

It's an 8 Pole filter which can operate in stereo 2 or 4-Pole mode, or 2, 4 or even 8-Pole in mono. So when I used to plug this into an analogue monosynth, I ran it in 8-Pole mode for an extreme 8db per octave - in this extreme slope mode you can really twist sounds or make the purest, deepest bass without the volume loss shallower curves produce. Unlike some of the tamer filters built into a lot of synths and samplers, this one can be pushed all the way to extremes.

Other features include one ADSR envelope for the filter's contour. This envelope can be triggered by MIDI and Trigger button, but not by audio unfortunately. The LFO is essential to bringing this filter to life! It has four waveforms including sawtooth, square, triangle and random. It can be synced to MIDI clock and can modulate to 16th, 8th, 1/4, 1/2, whole, double-whole, and triplet notes in tempo with your MPC (or MIDI) sequences! Or use the "Tap" button to tap in the tempo in real-time. A large numeric display shows the current tempo and there's also an EQ on-board for global sonic fine-tuning. Effects include a very harsh (in a good way) Distortion and stereo analog Phase Shifter. The ins-and-outs consist of three 1/4" inputs (mono/stereo), stereo phono (RCA) inputs, stereo 1/4" outputs, stereo phono (RCA) outputs, and MIDI in, out and through. All pertinent knobs and buttons can send and receive MIDI control. This is a perfect add-on for any MPC-user."
