Against The Clock Lab w/ AMyn, Colin Benders, & Sjamsoedin

AMyn - Against The Clock Lab Published on Oct 25, 2017

"Last weekend, we took Against The Clock to Amsterdam Dance Event’s Sound Lab and the results were spectacular. During the event, we had three artists create a track completely from scratch in front of an audience.

First up, Belgian producer AMyn steps up to the plate and creates a soulful hip-hop instrumental."

Steffi - Against The Clock

Published on Oct 12, 2017 FACTmagazine

Some nice synth spotting in this one. Sequentix P3 sequencer appears to the brain.

"The Dutch house and techno explorer creates an intense track in 10 minutes.

Steffi keeps busy. Since moving to Berlin in 2007, the Dutch-born producer has – deep breath now – released three sublime solo albums on Ostgut Ton, founded not one but two successful labels, promoted hundreds of underground parties and kept the city's iconic Panorama Bar booming as one of its resident DJs.

With her most recent album World of the Waking State continuing to make waves a month after its release, we added another item to her already-frantic to-do list – our Against The Clock challenge. Crafting a beat in 10 minutes using a seriously enviable array of gear, the cult hero didn't disappoint. Watch above."

Against The Clock: Tangerine Dream

FACTmagazine

"Against The Clock is a series where we give an artist 10 minutes in the studio and see what they come up with.

Tangerine Dream is one of the most enduring electronic acts of the 20th century. Formed by Edgar Froese in 1967, the act went through multiple iterations but came to define a generation of ambient and new age music whose influence can still be heard on film scores and synth albums today.

Although Froese died in 2015, the band still performs under the stewardship of Thorsten Quaeschning, who joined the band under Froese in 2003. On this episode of Against The Clock, Quaeschning is joined by Hoshiko Yamane and Ulrich Schnauss, who combine synth, violin and guitar to make a track in 10 minutes.

Tangerine Dream’s latest album, Recurring Dreams – a collection of new versions of classic Tangerine Dream tracks – is available now.

Agar Agar - Against The Clock

Published on Oct 17, 2018 FACTmagazine
Update 10/17/18 9:53PM: video is back.

"All aboard for our first ever Against The Clock on a boat.

French electronic duo Agar Agar are singer Clara Cappagli and synth wizard Armand Bultheel. The duo met in art school four years ago and bonded over a love of music and art, forming Agar Agar despite their contrasting backgrounds in garage rock and club music.

We jumped at the chance to feature the duo on Against The Clock and were happily surprised when they told us we'd be recording on a boat. The duo proved themselves an act to watch in 2018 thanks to Bultheel's electronic shoegaze instrumental and Cappagli's evocative vocals.

Watch the session above and check out Agar Agar's second album The Dog and The Future, which is out now via Cracki Records. Don't miss Agar Agar's upcoming London show next week."

Steffi - In The Studio

Published on Oct 24, 2017 FACTmagazine

Follow-up to her Against the Clock performance here.

"Steffi shows us her slick studio full of unusual vintage gear

Dutch techno icon Steffi made her massive Against The Clock session look easy, effortlessly gliding from synth to synth in her compact studio to create a tightly-wound electro track in just 10 minutes.

After the time was up, the Ostgut Ton regular and Panorama Bar resident talked us through what she did and how she did it, giving us a guided tour of her enviable gear collection at the same time.

Steffi’s got all the classics you’d expect in her studio – a TR-808 drum machine, a Minimoog for basslines – but also a few unusual items, like the Waldorf synth she uses for string sounds and a Sequentix Cirklon sequencer. Check it out above and watch her go Against The Clock."

Barker - Against The Clock

Premiered 113 minutes ago FACTmagazine

"Against The Clock is a series where we give an artist 10 minutes in the studio and see what they come up with.

This week, we visit the Berlin studio of Ostgut Ton artist and Berghain resident Barker, whose kick drum-free techno has provided some of the best records of the past few years.

In his Against The Clock, Barker hits our pleasure centers using a version of his current live setup, which includes an Elektron Octatrack and Digitone, Nord Drum and extra plate reverb.

Barker's latest album, Utility, is out now on Ostgut Ton: https://sambarker.bandcamp.com/album/...

Published on Jun 18, 2014 FACTmagazine·299 videos

"Against the Clock is a series on FACT TV where we give an artist 10 minutes in the studio and see what they come up with.

Taking the challenge this week, Luke Abbott. After cutting his teeth on Trevor Jackson's Output label in the mid-'00s, Abbott found a home on James Holden's Border Community, sharing Holden's love of emotive, ecstatic dance music and releasing two albums on the label, Holkham Drones and Wysing Forest. Abbott also has one hell of a live set-up, as he demonstrated to FACT TV when touching down in London for a pair of recent live shows.

Taraval - Against The Clock

Published on Jan 15, 2020 FACTmagazine

"San Francisco-based DJ, producer and Caribou collaborator Taraval has spent the past few years developing his spry and striking sound on seminal labels such as Four Tet’s TEXT and London’s Hypercolour.

This week we join him in California at local music hub Crowbar Corner Studios where he whips some spacey modular synth loops, 808- and 909-inspired TR-8S drum pads and misshapen ’70s funk samples into a giddy and jocular groove.

Against The Clock: Bloody Mary

FACTmagazine

"Against The Clock is a series where we give an artist 10 minutes in the studio and see what they come up with.

Bloody Mary has been a fixture on Berlin’s techno scene since she arrived in the city from France in 2005. In 2010 she founded her own label, Dame-Music, which has released music from artists like KiNK, Thomas P. Heckmann and Innerspace Halflife.

In the studio and on stage she makes use of classic gear such as the Roland TR-909 and TR-707 drum machines with modern equipment like the Mode Machine Xoxbox and Dave Smith Pro 2. We paid her a visit to see what kind of techno she could create in just 10 minutes.

Bloody Mary’s latest release, a collaborative EP with Cardopusher, is out now. Find the rest of the Dame-Music catalogue at Bandcamp.

Byron The Aquarius shows how to get more funk out of your synth

Published on Feb 13, 2018 FACTmagazine

"Funkadelic keys in a flash.

Byron The Aquarius is a master of Roland’s classic Juno-106 synth, as he proved on his recent Against The Clock episode. After he finished the challenge, we asked him for his tips on using the instrument – specifically how he gets his keys sounding so funky.

The solution to getting Funkadelic-style sounds with any synth – not just the Juno-106 – as Byron explains, is a lot easier than you might think. See how he does it above and revisit his Against the Clock here."

Efdemin - Against The Clock

Published on Jun 13, 2018 FACTmagazine

"Berlin minimal veteran Efdemin goes Against The Clock.

Efdemin has been a staple is the Berlin minimal scene since the turn of the millennium. Releasing music on labels like Dial and Curle Recordings, the Panorama Bar DJ hasn't showed any signs of stopping since.

FACT visited Efdemin in his Berlin studio to see what he could do in 10 minutes. During the session, he loaded up a barrage of sounds using a vintage sampler and engaged his variety of different drum machines and bits of modular gear.

Trust us, you don't want to miss out on this one. Press play and enjoy."

Ikonika - Against The Clock

Published on Apr 22, 2014 FACTmagazine

With the Moog Little Phatty.

"Against the Clock is a series on FACT TV where we give an artist 10 minutes in the studio and see what they come up with.

In the latest episode, we set the challenge to Ikonika. A steady stream of music since 2008 has made Ikonika one of UK dance music's most interesting acts - equally influenced by Streets of Rage and Rich Harrison, and peppering club forms from electronica to techno with her trademark synthlines and drum fills. She's released two albums, 2010's Contact Want Love Have and 2013's Aerotropolis, and this year will be celebrating the 10th birthday of her regular label Hyperdub.

Redlight - Against The Clock

Published on Jan 30, 2019 FACTmagazine

"Hugh Pescod has been producing as Redlight since 2009, incorporating the sounds of the British underground into productions featuring artists including Shy FX, Ms Dynamite, Raekwon and Mobb Deep, whilst embracing his love of bass, house, jungle and grime on his own label, Lobster Boy.

For this week's Against The Clock session the producer took a different approach. Using a vintage Yamaha SU700 sampler he found on eBay a few weeks before the session, he was able to build a vibe from scratch in one of the most impressive ATCs we've seen in ages - as Redlight himself says: 'All good ideas are made in 10 minutes'."

DJ Haus - Against The Clock

Published on Sep 26, 2018 FACTmagazine

Building a track from scratch on eurorack.

"DJ Haus is one of the hardest working people in dance music.

As head of Unknown to the Unknown, he oversees a relentless schedule of releases from artists like DJ Boring, Mall Grab, Deadboy and Kornél Kovács. Alongside that he's been a regular guest on FACT videos over the years, making beats with Willie Burns and finding out how synth master Legowelt makes his tracks.

DJ Haus is also a formidable producer in his own right, so we figured it was time we got him on Against The Clock. He set himself the challenge of making a dancefloor track in 10 minutes using his modular synth – with no cables patched to begin with – and smashed it, frankly.

DJ Haus' forthcoming mixtape compilation DJ Haus Enters The Unknown Vol. 2 will be available in November.

Against The Clock: Cromby

FACTmagazine

"Against The Clock is a series where we give an artist 10 minutes in the studio and see what they come up with.

Cromby is an Irish producer based in Berlin who specialises in crafting house with a classic feel, big, bold basslines and joyous melodies, skills that have seen him release records on labels including Sulta Selects Silver Service, Feel My Bicep and Unknown To The Unknown.

In the studio, he makes music with hardware such as Korg’s Minilogue, Moog Minitaur and Novation Peak, controlled via Ableton Live and Push. In this episode, he shows us how quickly he can use it all to lay down a track.

Cromby will be launching his own label later this year, which will focus on his own productions made with the dancefloor in mind. 'I have a ton of new music that I’m excited to share,' he says."

Driftmachine - Against The Clock

Published on Aug 22, 2018 FACTmagazine

"Modular synths aren't as rare and unusual as they once were, but few artists can claim to have mastered them like Andreas Gerth and Florian Zimmer. As Driftmachine, the pair use two systems running in sync to create multilayered compositions that straddle the line between techno and drone.

The pair have a released several albums on Umor Rex over the past four years, including this year's Shunter, a deep dive into "post-industrial dub" peppered with noise and field recordings. However, as we discovered when we visited their studio for this episode of Against The Clock, they sometimes use puppets to make music too."

Orbital - Against The Clock

Published on Dec 19, 2018 FACTmagazine

"Orbital’s Paul Hartnoll went against the clock to see if he could make something beautiful out of vocal samples from a variety of British politicians. Why? He says it best himself: 'Why not make some sense out of a load of old rubbish?'

Using a couple of samplers and a drum machine, the rave pioneer had just ten minutes to build a track from a variety of manipulated samples, including a ‘Boris Johnson kick drum’ and a ‘Theresa May lead’, in the hope that the resulting sounds are at least 'prettier than when they went in'."

Albert van Abbe - Against The Clock

Published on Apr 25, 2018 FACTmagazine

Insane. Here is something you do not see everyday.

"Albert Van Abbe has been releasing gritty, atmospheric techno for over a decade on underground labels like Semantica and his own No Comment imprint, so we figured he'd know his way around a synth well enough to make a track in 10 minutes for our Against The Clock series.

However, we were completely unprepared for what we got when we caught up with him at the Willem Twee studios in the Dutch city of 's-Hertogenbosch. There, he opted to make his track on a giant wall of oscilloscopes, pulse generators and filters from the 1950s and '60s along with an ARP 2500. Eurorack this is not."

Amirali - Against The Clock [with Ableton & DSI Synths]

Published on Aug 8, 2018 FACTmagazine

DSI Sequential Prophet-6 & Mopho x4.

"A Balearic sunset soundtrack in 10 minutes.

Iran-born producer Amirali started attracting attention back in 2012 with his lush, club-rooted soundscapes back in 2012 with his debut album for Crosstown Rebels, In Time.

His latest EP, Odyssey, sees him continue to develop his rich style of house music with the kind of sunny Balearic textures custom-made for Ibizan sunsets.

http://www.2lin.cc/Odyssey

We put his skills to the test on this week's Against The Clock, where he made an atmospheric, downtempo slow-burner from his north London studio featuring live vocals and a few carefully selected pieces of gear running with Ableton Live.

Amirali will be presenting a collaborative concert with The Tonhalle Orchestra Zürich on October 5th.

Jameszoo - Against The Clock

Published on Jul 4, 2018 FACTmagazine

"One of Amsterdam's key players makes a track in 10 minutes.

Jameszoo is a self-described "naïve computer jazz" artist and Dutch representive of Flying Lotus's Brainfeeder label, which released his debut album Fool in 2016. When he's not making music he's hosting residencies at the Netherlands' Willem Twee Studios, a space filled with vintage gear for making electro-acoustic sounds.

We travelled to Den Bosch to meet Jameszoo at the space for this week's episode of Against The Clock, where he put its unique collection of devices – including an ARP 2600 and a few pieces of test and measure equipment – through their paces with his Prophet '08 synth.

Watch above and then see what Albert Van Abbe did with the Willem Twee collection for his ATC a few months ago."
