GLASYS - No Chronic Pain, No Gain (Live)

Published on Feb 11, 2016 GLASYS

"Here's another one-take live performance. This song has a lot of keyboard action and proved to be quite the challenge!

All sounds played in realtime on the Nord Stage 2EX which also controls a Boomstar 4075 (for the bass sound). Only the drums are sequenced using a Social Entropy Engine and Nord Drum 2. Recorded in one take."

Aquatic Ambience (Donkey Kong Country) Live Synth Cover

GLASYS

"Aquatic Ambience from Donkey Kong Country for SNES has always been one of my favorite video game underwater themes. Here is my live synthesizer arrangement of the song. All sounds performed simultaneously without any backing tracks or overdubs.

http://www.patreon.com/glasys

Technical details:

This song was pretty tricky to arrange in my style even though it's pretty downtempo / chill. I wanted to stay quite close to the original arrangement by the fantastic David Wise, and there were a lot of different sounds to recreate and figure out how to do in one go.

I ended up creating a bunch of new percussion samples and mapping them to the arcade buttons as well as layering some of them with the bass. For example, the snare that comes in the second half is unmuted with an expression pedal and layered with the bass notes that I play with my pinky.
I enjoy finding solutions for this stuff, it's like a puzzle game. :)

The bass sound itself is the Boomstar 4075 through Polyverse Gatekeeper (for the arpeggiated effect).

For my right hand, I split the Prophet XL into two sounds: The bottom half is a pitch shifting string and the top half is that "guitar feedback" type of sound. The split point is set up in a way that lets me trigger both sounds with one chord at a certain point. Those dreamy arpeggios are played on the Prophet 6 (Valhalla's free plugin "SuperMassive" is the awesome reverb) and the main melody is an Arturia MicroBrute through a few pedals (Red Panda Tensor and MWFX Judder). The piano is Spectrasonics Keyscape, flute is SWAM Flute (both those sounds are played on the Korg MicroKey).

Phew, I think that covers it! :)
Drop a comment below and let me know what you'd like to see on this channel."

Mother Brain Boss Theme (Super Metroid) - Live Synth Cover

GLASYS

"Here's the Mother Brain final boss battle theme from Super Metroid arranged and performed live on my synthesizers + finger drumming controller.

I've covered a lot of Metroid recently and I was actually planning to move on to something else, but this haunting theme was stuck in my head and I felt compelled to play it. It's fitting for the times, I suppose!

This track is available as a high quality audio download for my Patrons:
https://www.patreon.com/glasys

Technical details:

All sounds performed live simultaneously (no pre-recorded material or overdubs).

The left hand horn / bass sound was programmed on the Sequential Prophet XL even though I'm controlling it from the mini keyboard on my Arcadia controller.

The right hand spooky sound consists of multiple layers: A pad created on the Prophet XL, a few stacked / detuned church organs from HALion Sonic and SWAM Trombones (the latter being mapped to one octave only). All these layers are pitch-swept simultaneously using an expression pedal.

Drum sounds were programmed with Native Instruments Battery 4.

The intro sound is played on the Arturia Microbrute which is running through Chase Bliss Audio's Thermae and MOOD pedals. The 'wet' knob on the Thermae is all the way up which is why there's a delay between what my fingers are doing and the sound you hear.

Hope you enjoy, thanks so much for your support!"

GLASYS: Can I Write a JRPG Theme... In An Hour? (From Scratch #1)

GLASYS

"Watch me succeed (or fail miserably?) at composing & recording a JRPG-style tune in one hour. (I didn't actually plan on writing a video game style theme, I just hit record and that's what came out).
So, I've been wanting to do this for a long time - get over my own perfectionism and create something as quickly as possible, without the ability to redo stuff or get into the details. Obviously it's far from perfect, but I actually had a lot of fun doing this - it's very liberating!
I would love to make this a weekly challenge. Let me know if you enjoyed watching this, and if you have any ideas for future episodes (could be anything from a certain style, a mood, or even a cover that I create in one hour)."

Drawing a Synthesizer in MIDI - Live!

video upload by GLASYS

"I've been really enjoying making live MIDI art, so I thought it would be cool to try and draw one of my favorite things in the world - a synth! 😀

I tried to make it look 3D, and the biggest challenge was drawing the black keys - I had to get the timing of those notes just right, play them faster and faster and then reverse their direction. Hope you like the results!

The controller is Roli LUMI, the sound is my Sequential Prophet X layered with Steinberg Retrologue. My DAW is Cubase 10.

Metroid Music - Surface Of SR388 (Synth Cover, Return Of Samus)

Published on Jun 3, 2020 GLASYS

"Metroid 2 on Gameboy is the first game in the series I ever played. I'll never forget that feeling of being all alone on a creepy alien planet and being in awe of the size of the world and amount of exploration.
This tune is the first you hear when you start the game on the surface of planet SR388 - the soundtrack gets a lot weirder and creepier as you descend into the depths of the world."
