In 2009 I recreated many favorite 80s drumbeats on the then new Korg Electribe samplers, sampling the Linndrum, Oberheim DMX, Roland CR78, TR808 and more. I copied the patterns by ear and also tried to catch the vibe of each original track as much as possible, using only the internal EQ and sampler fx. Later I expanded the series to synthesizer medleys and full tracks. It led me to a lot of contacts, collaborations and releases.

Now I wanted to reboot this in portable music production. Jim Audo's GR16 iPad app felt very much like the Electribe SX in use. So I started transferring my old beats to the newer medium, improved and expanded them to do another series of classic drumbeats, to inspire new music.

The Novation Launchpad Pro Mk3 integrates well with it and gives more tactile feel to it, as with the Electribes. It's however not necessary to use it.

The result is a great sounding retro beat machine that now even fits on an iPhone.

And yes, that's an LM2 at the back, not LM1.

Enjoy

DSI Prophet 12 | The Xophen Soundbank, a bank of 99 patches including pads, leads, brass, FM bells

video upload by MIDERA

"Included is a series of patches I have made since July 2021. I recorded everything here within one run, so you will hear whatever mistakes I make as I go through all of the patches to give you a feel for how they all sound. There is no reverb on these sounds (as much as I would have preferred how they sounded). Anything you hear will sound the same on my unit as it does on yours. Small amount of master limiting was used.

A few notes though - you are advised to turn your Master Volume up. This is because there is a strange behavior on the Prophet 12 where if you lower the Master Volume, you may hear very strange differences in panning of voices, hence, my Master Volume is at Maximum and my VCA values are much lower to compensate. This has worked well for me. I actually had sent my unit in for diagnostics for fear that something was wrong. Sequential informed me that this was normal behavior.

⌛Time Past ⌚ ~ First OP-1 Field Jam

video upload by Postmodern Machine

"Hello 🏄🏼‍♂️

My Teenage Engineering OP-1 Field arrived two weeks ago. 🍾

I have never had or used one of these in the past and I'm building lots of thoughts on it, most of which are positive! Overall it's a super inspiring machine if you are keyboard based for being creative wherever you are. 🌿

I started exploring it by building this track. One small gripe I have is the lack of crossfades when editing with cuts, which is very simple to do in a DAW and remove all clicks and pops. There is really no reason that cuts to the tape should create clicks and pops. My main synth loop on this had a click in the edit at each loop, but when I built the other tracks, I used some more savvy techniques to cut the loops as far from sounds as possible, to prevent clicks and pops. This did work well and when I brought everything into the computer, I only had to fix my one loop. 🤲🏼 That said, it's a bit cumbersome to work around loop points to get the result I want.

The OP-1 so far is a really really fun way to be creative. It was still a blast despite any quirks. If you can accept of the limitations as just something to work around. I used the vintage 4-track simulation for this. 📼

Nice Kiss ~ Digitakt and Octatrack Techno Performance

video by EZBOT

"In this video I perform my track submission for the techno/minimal techno compilation that took place in my discord. This is 1 of 50 different artist submissions all of which are techno/minimal techno.

This track to me was all about smooth transitions - which is why it took me so many attempts to finally record a performance worth sharing.

I sampled myself saying "nice kiss.. you do that on purpose?" All of the sounds are from the Digitakt. The Octatrack is acting as a mixer, looper, and fx-box. Find this Octatrack template on my Patreon (link below) page.

Here is the record from the last compilation: https://sawxxi.bandcamp.com/"

Roland JD-800 Model Expansion on JUPITER-Xm - Quick Review in Description

video by Robert Saint John

"Roland #JD800 on #JUPITERxm - Quick performance, all sounds live on the Xm and from the new JD-800 Model Expansion installed on it (standard Xm drum track).

I had my doubts, but the JD-800 Model Expansion is very worthy of the JUPITER-X/Xm. It may not have analog roots, but it does have character and presence. I didn't expect it to map well to the JUPITER-X (let alone the Xm) controls, but Roland did an outstanding job here. After a few hours, it's quite smooth, especially with our friends 'Shift' and 'Function.'

Most important, I think it really brings an additional class of Tones to the X/Xm that were not there. There's a crisp-almost-crunchy feel to many of the waveforms that are undoubtedly digital but still really useful. And the new multi MFX effects? *chef's kiss* There are some gems in there that will take some time to explore, and it will be great to use them with other Models as well.

Five stars, highly recommended."

LE CHOC DU FUTUR - THE SHOCK OF THE FUTURE Synth Movie

Published on May 3, 2019 MPM Premium

This one was sent in by a good friend of mine, Carla. I can't believe I hadn't heard of this one before. There's some prime synth spotting in the trailer alone. It's currently streaming on Amazon Prime. Note this is an actual movie, not a documentary. The film features music by Human League, Devo, Throbbing Gristle, Marc Collin, Clara Luciani, Jean-Michel Jarre, Cerrone, Aksak Maboul, Suicide, and Julie London.

In the trailer: Roland CompuRhythm CR-78, Moog modular, ARP 2600 orange & black, and a Yamaha CS80. Vintage Maestro Phase Shifter as well.

Description for the trailer above:

"FRANCE, 2019 / 84 MIN / FRENCH

Official Music Video for the new cover version of Stardust by The Galaxy Electric
Video Created by Michelle Pan
https://www.instagram.com/pan.michelle
https://www.vimeo.com/michellepan

This single was created in our signature Cosmic Tape Music style, utilizing electroacoustic techniques, Reel to Reel tape machine, and varispeed “tape tricks” for vocals and bass guitar to change timbre and original pitch. The use of electro-mechanical effects treatments like spring reverb and tape delay were implemented to add a touch of vintage spice.

The following gear was used to make this song:
TEAC A-3440 Reel to Reel tape machine
Buchla Music Easel
Mellotron M4000D mini
1979 Dual Algorithmic Oscillator
Crank Sturgeon Plug SP contact microphone
Knas Ekdahl Moisturizer Spring Reverb

Lyrics:
And now the purple dusk of twilight time
Steals across the meadows of my heart
High up in the sky the little stars climb
Always reminding me that we're apart
You wander down the lane and far away
Leaving me a song that will not die
Love is now the stardust of yesterday
The music of the years gone by.
Sometimes I wonder, how I spend
The lonely nights
Dreaming of a song
The melody
Haunts my reverie
And I am once again with you
When our love was new
And each kiss an inspiration
But that was long ago
And now my consolation is in the stardust of a song

Beside a garden wall, when stars are bright
You are in my arms
The nightingale
Tells his fairytale
Of paradise, where roses grew
Though I dream in vain
In my heart it will remain
My stardust melody
The memory of love's refrain.

Madrona Labs Introduces Aaltoverb

via Madrona Labs

"Hi there, it’s been some while. I'm excited to be writing you again, with the big news that there's a new beastie in the Madrona Labs family. Meet Aaltoverb, our very first effect.

A number of times over the years, people have asked if Aalto’s reverb could be made into its own plugin. The thing is, our focus here at Madrona Labs is on instruments, not effects. And so it didn't really seem to make sense to add a reverb to our lineup. But more time passed, and I started to think, what features would a performance reverb have? This question led to Aaltoverb, a reverberator with a focus on dramatic sound sculpting and completely smooth tweakability.

Aaltoverb’s coolest trick is this: you can smoothly change the size of the virtual space that the sound is reverberating in. This results in in pitch shifting that is reminiscent of what tape delays do when the speed changes. But instead of a single speed, the shift applies to the whole acoustic space, vibrating “air” and all. So a giant room can turn smoothly into a small and natural sounding chamber, and then into a tiny and very unnatural resonator. With longer decay times, weird spring-like beasties can be found along the way.

The controls are minimal, and are meant to interact in musical and inspiring ways. You can read all about Aaltoverb on the website, and in the manual. It's short but tells about some tricks you might not figure out otherwise. And: cartoons!

Aaltoverb 1.0.0 is available now as a 64-bit VST3 for Windows, and as 64-bit VST and Audio Units for Mac OS X. A single license covers both Mac and Windows and is $35.

Get a bundle deal!
Another thing people have asked about over the years is bundle deals. You know, where you buy more than one plugin at a time and as a result you get a discount. This was hard to imagine doing until our web maestro Philip did a bunch of work to modernize the site, including adding a shopping cart feature. But now that's done—and so are bundles.

They work very simply and so we're calling it the Simple Bundle feature. Buy more than one plugin in a single transaction, and save 15% off the entire purchase. That's it. Even if one of the plugins is, say, $35.

You’ll notice that Stripe, not PayPal, is now the default method of payment. We didn't want to leave people out in the cold just because PayPal didn't work in their regions, and since you need a credit card to get PayPal in the first place, hopefully this is more universal. We're always trying to improve the purchase experience, so please let us know how Stripe works for you. If you need or prefer to pay by PayPal for some reason, please get in touch.

Get the T-shirt!
I really love excuses to make a new T-shirt, and Aaltoverb's release seemed like a great one. I thought this one should be a collaboration and happily, Leafcutter John was into the idea. You might know the music he has put out on labels like Planet Mu and Border Community. This year he's gone and made a machine for making artworks, a homemade pen plotter, and the drawings he's making with it have really been pinging my visual cortex in a pleasant way. And so we made a shirt:

The design reminds me of sound decaying, and also of fabric being folded, and the analog robot quality is just (chef's kiss). I am wearing one nearly all the time, and you can too.

What about Sumu?
A long story that must be told short here, because it's nearly the cocktail hour. Very short version: I'm excited about Sumu, and now that Aaltoverb is out I can get back to finishing it.

Slightly longer version: I have some new design ideas for Sumu that required a lot of infrastructure work to pull off. Some to do with graphics and animation, and more on the DSP side of things. Well I dove into that infrastructure work and when I looked up it was a year later, or something. So both as a first use of the new framework and a way to, you know, ship a product, I decided to focus on the Aaltoverb release first. It's a cool enough reverb on its own, but to me it represents a lot more that's been done under the hood. As fall rolls around and I dive back into Sumu and Soundplane work I'm going to share some more about what's going on in there. Meanwhile, I hope you enjoy the sounds.

Roland Alpha Juno 2 JU-2 Analog Polysynth

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"In the words of the pioneers that made the Alpha Junos famous...

"Charly says always tell your mummy before you go off somewhere (to play with your alpha juno)" - Prodigy 1991

"Bigger and bolder and rougher tougher, in other words, sucker, there is no other... I wanna kiss myself (because I bought this alpha juno)!" - Human Resource 1992

This poly classic is ready for another go-round. From the original "What The" Dominator hoover to the addictive chord memory feature, this unit delivers meaty, sweet, sweeping, chiming, timeless tones with a matured MIDI implementation and updated components making them a bit less of a maintenance beast than the legendary 106 predecessor.

I've replaced the solder-in battery with a CR-2032 clip for ease of replacement in the future (new battery as well of course)
The keyboard had keys not working, but after cleaning and a couple trace repairs, every strike is solid now
A couple of the bottom panel screw mounts had been broken by a previous over-zealous tech. These have been properly re-mounted
Inside and out has been vacuumed and cleaned
Factory patches restored
Comes with power cord"

Details on TINRS New Edgecutter

You can find previous posts featuring This is Not Rocket Science's new Edgecutter ADSR eurorack module here. Full details are now in:

"Edgecutter is an ADSR envelope that shows you what it is doing. The beauty of this module is the line of LEDs showing you where the envelope is at. Allowing you to connect what you see with what you hear and getting more visible timing input from your system.

We want to modulate all the things. Edgecutter comes with adjustable curvature so you can tweak the shape of your signal. The Attack, Decay, Sustain and Release parameters all have CV inputs and state/trigger outputs. This envelope contains everything – as far as we are concerned.

Edgecutter sends out all its envelopes to you Sealed With A Loving Kiss.

Walking the envelope is easy with the many features on our Edgecutter:

The GATE is the input that starts and stops the envelope
RETRIG restarts the A/D cycle while the GATE is open
VELOCITY is an input to scale the peak of the envelope
TRIGGER is an illuminated button that enables you to manually start/stop the envelope
A D S R all have knobs and input jacks for CV modulation
Along the envelope you have output jacks that can send triggers or gates for each state of the envelope – allowing you to VERY precisely chain events in your system
With the MODE BUTTON you can select between three modes of operation
One-shot mode – a short pulse goes through the entire envelope using the sustain level as an intermediate point
Gate mode – after you open the gate the envelope goes through attack and decay and waits for you at sustain until you lower the gate
Repeat mode – changes the sustain into a repeating A/D cycle
Using the SPEED BUTTON you can select between a fast or a slow envelope. This changes everything by changing the mapping of the A/D/R parameters as a group.
fast envelope
slow envelope
CURVATURE is the place where you can fade between exponential or logarithmic enveloping leading to different curvature or none at all. Turning your knob to the left creates a staggered attack and decay, turning the knob all the way right creates a staggered release.
ENVELOPE OUTPUTS Both outputs send out the envelope but only the curved output passes on the results of your CURVATURE settings and has a signal indicator.
The cutting edge of the envelope – Curve your enthusiasm"
