Explaining the PlayFader CV/MIDI Sequencer

video upload by mylarmelodies

"In this tutorial/demo I’ll explain the unique way the Playfader CV/MIDI sequencer works, showing the basic keystrokes you need to be able to make, erase, transpose, mute and apply temporary effects to sequences. I’ll also keep the shortcuts onscreen so you don’t need to remember them.

I'm using the Dreadbox NYX, Music Thing Workshop and Roland T-8 here. T-8 supplies clock to the PlayFader. PlayFader sends CV/Gate to the two analog synths.

GEN-01 - Generative synth totem

video upload by Love Hultén

"GEN-06, a self-generating installation that combine changes in pattern, melody, tonality and much more to create complex multi-layered sound structures, real-time. Arduino handles logic and outputs MIDI to an OXI Coral synth module. 6 channels / 8 voices (basslines, pads, melodies, arpeggios, percussions, kicks)

The machine is very sparse interaction-wise - A volume knob, some controls for optional ambience(FX Aid XL module) and a reset switch. Parameters such as BPM and scales are randomly picked upon each reset, generating something fresh that slowly evolves over time.

A variety of moving components mimic MIDI activity on different channels, a totem visualizer where mechanics and sound combine."

yoctocore - a midi to cv box

video upload by infinitedigits

"yoctocore is the thing I've needed for years.

there are so many midi to cv boxes out there, but so few of them have 4 pitch/envelope pairs with a wide range of voltage (-5 to +10v). yoctocore has 8 cv outputs, each with a wide cv range, each that can be programmed to be 1) a midi to pitch, or 2) an envelope that triggers on any of the outputs), or 3) a lfo, or 4) a clock, or 5) a sequencer, or 6) a simple a block of code that runs on the beat, that you can define to be whatever you want.

also its entirely open-source (https://github.com/schollz/yoctocore) so in case there is something you want to change, you can."

Sunday Jam #60 : Drivin' again - with guitar

video upload by MIDI IN

"I've decided to take an existing piece of music, my Music for an Imaginary Driving Game, which I've published a few times in different forms, most recently for dual SIDs, I'll link to that video, and enhance it with real guitar and realistic drums.

The stop-motion driving clip is thanks to Mike Bird:

"I've just received these in the post this morning. I was unable to make edits to Tolaemon's 'nano SwinSID b' design and so I made a new board design using the SwinSID schematic. This is a demo, (apart from the looks, and easier manufacture for me, they're the same as the nano SwinSID b)

Best Ambient Synth Shootout #140: Mega MIDI - Song 3

video upload by Christian's Sonic Spaces

"This is the third song with the Mega MIDI by Aidan Lawrence. It's an FM synthesizer based on either the YM2612 yamaha chip (used here and in SEGA Genesis / Megadrive home consoles and various SEGA arcade game systems, including the Mega-Play, System 18, and System 32) or the cleaner sounding YM3438 chip without the crossover distortion in the output. Both sound chips has six channels with four operators per channel.

In contradiction to the Kasser DAFM Synth you can program the sounds only via Midi CC but it can load via SD card opm-file game sounds from the SEGA Genesis / Megadrive games (currently more than 9500 opm-files available). The game music composers did a great job to programming the best out of the 4 OP FM synth. So it's a lot of fun to dive through all the game sounds.

I used for the recording the following FX pedals:
Line 6 DL4 MkII, Pigtronix Echolution² Deluxe, GFI System Specular Reverb², OTO Boum.
Depending on the recorded track some FX are deactivated.

The signal went through a Presonus StudioLive 16.0.2 into the PC via USB for recording. To create the complete song I recorded consecutively several stereo tracks. On some tracks Compressor and EQ where added in Cubase 13. The final song was then mastered using iZotope Ozone."

"MFB SYNTH PRO is an eight-voice synthesizer. Its analog sound generation is based on circuits and technology used in the classic synthesizers of the 70s and 80s, but enhanced here with contemporary, practical functions. One of the SYNTH PRO's special features is its oscillators with continuously fadeable waveforms. These VCOs can alternatively be switched to a DCO mode. The filter section has two separate VCFs with different characteristics that can be linked for joint control. SYNTH PRO also has 240 memory locations, a polyphonic sequencer, an arpeggiator, comprehensive MIDI controller control and a digital effects processor."

"Playing a Rhodes Chroma with the Retroaktiv Polyphonic Aftertouch Retrofit installed. For more info, visit www.retroaktivsynthesizers.com"

Found the above video from 2017 in the following listing.

via this listing

"It is in great shape, and the wood is nearly flawless. The metal and tolex are also in great shape. It's got the CC+ CPU board upgrade, MIDI and polyphponic aftertouch. The unit has had the following work done:

Luca Sasdelli Switching Power Supply installed. (Replaces original PSU, which was underpowered)

Retroaktiv Polyphonic Aftertouch installed. Can also transmit this via MIDI to control other devices that support poly aftertouch.

CC+ CPU upgrade installed, allowing for CC control of parameters, extra memory, and more.

Other information:

One of the segments is out on the large 2-digit segment display (Which shows the current program selected). One segment is out on the 8-character mini-7-segment screen. Both of these segments are so minor that I have never been affected by them. One of the voice cards is currently coming up with an error. I am willing to replace the card before shipping the instrument. If I haven't played the Chroma for a month, certain keys will need to be exercised a few times in order to work. This is due to the leaf switches used on these. They're the same as the ones on the K250. I have never seen a keyboard that uses these that did not exhibit this behavior.

There is s small dent in the front panel near the Chroma logo. Hardly noticeable.

Voice 6 is currently throwing an error code."

Winter 2024 Fundraising Raffle: One-of-a-Kind $20,000 Eurorack Synthesizer

We are excited to announce our final fundraising raffle of 2024 featuring a one-of-a-kind Eurorack synthesizer comprised of 52 modules from over 30 Eurorack manufacturers located in 10 different countries. The system, curated by modular synthesis educator Chris Meyer, was inspired by Bob Moog's legendary Moog modular synthesizers in mind. It has a retail value of $20,000.

The system features:

3 Analog Oscillators | 2 Digital Oscillators | 8 Filters | 3 Percussion Voices | Spring Reverb | Analog Phase Shifter | Vocoder/Filter Bank | Frequency Shifter | Digital Multi-Effects | Moog-style Analog Sequencers | Wood Encased Keyboard with MIDI Interface and Arpeggiator | Custom Black American Walnut Cabinet with Chromaesthetic Lighting |

All modules and other components were donated by the manufacturer to make this raffle possible.

Tickets for the raffle are $20 each, 6 for $100, 14 for $200, and 40 for $500

The raffle ends on Friday, December 20th, and is open internationally.

Proceeds from the raffle benefit our important work in science education, archive preservation, and the operation of the Moogseum in downtown Asheville, NC. The Moogseum continues to be challenged by the long-term financial effects of Hurricane Helene, making this year-end fundraiser critically important.

Nightverb automated by the Midicake Arp (no talk)

video upload by Richard DeHove

"Here's a somewhat chaotic collection of MIDI CC automation experiments using the Midicake Arp to generate the data. The Arp feeds the Nightverb synced data which affects the sounds coming in from the LXR-02. The Arp and LXR-02 are running from an external clock.

Originally I was blathering over the top about how it was all done but perhaps just seeing some of the twiddlings, especially toward the end of the video, may get the idea across just as well. I tried to give a wet and dry example of what's happening but this is all pulled from about a dozen or so meandering noodles so forgive me if they're not all perfectly structured. Headphones reveal some of the finer modulation timings. There's also a lot of unpleasant oddities but I thought them worth keeping to show the range of modulation.

The real star here is the Midicake Arp. The new v7 firmware is what opens up synced MIDI CC automation. Unless you've got a good dedicated sequencer, or take feeds from your DAW, chances are this hasn't been easily available. I remember looking into devices which would allow simple synchronized MIDI CC automation a few months ago and there weren't many choices. It's why I ended up selling my El Capistan. I bought that specifically for its "degrading loops" functionality but that only available by MIDI CC. In itself that's not too hard, but if you want it clock synced then that's another story.

Sending four channels of automation to the Nightverb, sometimes with extremely fast LFO-like modulations, did sometimes overload the Nightverb and require a power cycle. This usually happened if I flipped between intense presets while running.

If you have any high-end effect units chances are there are all sorts of interesting things available via MIDI CC. With Arp is very easy to access them in real-time sync. So congrats to Midicake for adding this excellent functionality!
