Spitfire Audio Mercury — Unearthly Sounds from Hollywood's Secret Weapon

video upload by Spitfire Audio

Spitfire Audio collaboratively creates MERCURY library like no other by harnessing hotshot Hollywood instrument designer Chas Smith’s unearthly sounds for all

“Chas’ instruments have been a crucial part of all of my film scores, and although I’m a little sad that I will no longer have him all to myself, I am thrilled that he has finally succumbed to years of urging on my part and has at long last collaborated with Spitfire Audio.”

- GRAMMY® Award-nominated composer, keyboardist, record producer, and remixer Charlie Clouser (Saw, Wayward Pines, Nine Inch Nails), 2022

LONDON, UK: created in close collaboration with hotshot Hollywood instrument-builder Chas Smith, famed for transforming disused metal into Hollywood’s most menacing, most mysterious instruments for forty years (yet still sought after by blockbuster film composers needing to score the awe-inspiring, the mystical, the mechanical, and the alien), sound- specialising British music technology company Spitfire Audio is proud to announce availability of MERCURY — harnessing his unearthly sounds for all by sampling 14 of the hotshot Hollywood instrument-builder’s most celebrated acoustic instruments, then fusing, warping, and reinventing them in Solar, Spitfire Audio’s new eDNA-powered synthesiser, to deliver 600+ organic and synthesised textures, tones, and pads perfect for tweaking, twisting, and recombining to unleash the sinister, unshackle the industrial, and unveil the impossible worlds orbiting just beyond reach — as of August 25…

Foreigner - Cold As Ice (Live At The Rainbow '78) w/ an EML 101

video upload by Mercury

EML 101 lead at 4:10

Two synth spotting videos sent in via Dustin who had the following to say (2nd video below):

"I don't recall ever seeing an EML 101 onstage with any of the big 70's radio bands -of course, it's almost always the MiniMoog, Arp 2600/Odyssey, etc. So I was a bit baffled trying to figure out exactly what synth this is during this live video.

It's a bit hard to see, and it's on a custom raised stand facing the audience, separate from the connected keyboard. The tip off for me that it might be an EML 101 was the distinct metal closing latch that you can see here on the keyboard.

As always, this killer synth sounds great, and kudos to him for having the guts to play a bit of a different rig than seemed to be on everyones elses stage at the time.

Anybody know of another big band like this using EML's live?

Update: some mentions of other artists that used the EML 101 in previous posts here.

And:

Foreigner - Double Vision (Official Music Video)

video upload by RHINO

In this video you can clearly see that this is an EML 101 (pause at 0:52).

"You're watching the official music video for Foreigner - 'Double Vision' from the album 'Double Vision' (1978). 'Double Vision' reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100."

Update2 via Rick Steff in the comments: "al talks about it here: https://al-greenwood.com/home/blog/a-classic-turns-50" From that link:

A CLASSIC TURNS 50!

The EML 101 Synthesizer turns 50 this year! I was working with the late and great Walter Sear at Sear Sound Studio when he introduced me to this ground-breaking synth. He was also a partner with Robert Moog and instrumental in developing the Minimoog. I used this synth on the first 2 Foreigner albums on the tracks - 'Feels Like the First Time, Cold As Ice, Damage is Done, and Spellbinder.

Sequential OB6 and Thermae Ambient Bells

video upload by riotbell

"This is a short piece pairing the OB6 and the Chase Bliss Thermae. Just a gentle sequenced piece meant to simulate slightly detuned bells.

I think the Mercury 7 actually provides more texture than anything. I don't know if I'd call the M7 underrated, but it really does rich spacey soundscaping better than just about any reverb I've so far used.

Thanks for listening."

Does Roland deliver? Comparing the Jupiter 4 and the Promars plugin.

video upload by Friendly Noise

The modulation comparisons at 17 are interesting.

"Jupiter 4 vs Promars plugin

This text contains information about how the comparison was made. If you want to read a longer review, please download the pdf file at the bottom of this page.
But if you want an unbiased experience, stop reading and go see the video or jump to the desired part of the video using the video sections below.

In any case, please also consider subscribing to the channel if you like the video. This is a very time consuming activity, I make this just as a hobby and the only way to know that it’s worth the effort is the statistics of the channel. I have no message for the mankind, but I need to know if you like what I do, if that makes sense. :-)

Ok, this is a comparison between the Roland Jupiter 4 and the Roland Promars plugin. The Promars is a dual VCO monophonic synth. It is said to be technically very close to the Jupiter 4. So, if we use only one Promars VCO and don’t play chords on the Jupiter, the resulting sounds should be theoretically very similar. But close enough to allow for comparisons? Let’s have a listen!

No video or pics of the filter and envelope settings are included. There made no sense because the position of the parameters in the Jupiter 4 and Mercury 4 didn’t match.

Levels are matched using peak normalisation. The Promars is just a little quieter. That’s how the plug-in works.

No effects, EQ or processing were added to the direct sound. The Jupiter 4 onboard chorus is always off, and the second Promars VCO is of course switched off, too.

Cherry Audio Introduces Quadra - ARP Quadra Emulation, Synth Stack 2, Year 3 Collection

video upload by Cherry Audio

Right on target.

"The Cherry Audio Quadra is a super-accurate and immensely improved emulation of the ARP Quadra synthesizer, originally released in 1978 - a rare and coveted “unicorn” instrument in the synthesizer world, reproduced for the first time as a virtual instrument.

We've wildly expanded it for an experience that blows away the real thing in every conceivable way. Each of its four sections is independently assignable to any region of the keyboard for endless splitting and layering flexibility. The overall sound quality has been improved for a richer and fatter tone. And not only did we make a killer emulation of the onboard phaser effect, we added a stereo chorus/flanger, a syncable echo, and studio-quality reverb - all individually routable for unprecedented effects flexibility."

Cherry Audio Introduces Mercury-4 - Detailed Roland Jupiter-4 Emulation

Mercury-4 🌌 | Cherry Audio video upload by Cherry Audio

"The new Cherry Audio Mercury-4 is a detailed emulation of one of the best-sounding and quirkiest polyphonic synthesizers of the late 1970's, the Roland Jupiter-4.

It’s the rarest and most sonically unique of the fabled Jupiter series, and we’ve gone to great lengths to recreate the subtle (and not-so-subtle) nuances and character of this beloved classic.

Every aspect of Mercury-4 has been expertly modeled upon a vintage Jupiter-4 originally owned by Greg Hawkes of the legendary 80’s new wave band The Cars, and played on their double-platinum 1981 album Shake It Up.

In Greg’s own words, Mercury-4 'sounds just like my old Jupiter! It’s nice to have it back.'"

History:

Originally released in 1978, the Roland Jupiter-4 synthesizer was one of the earliest instruments to combine voice-assign polyphony with digital patch storage - that is, the ability to store and recall sounds to a digital memory and recall them at the touch of a button.

The Jupiter-4 rapidly became the go-to polysynth for numerous English and European acts in the 80's including Duran Duran, Thomas Dolby, The Human League, Simple Minds, and more, and for good reason: the Jupiter-4 sounded fantastic, with a raw, raunchy tone not found in any of the other beloved Juno and Jupiter synths. Its analog oscillators have a uniquely aggressive tone quality, the built-in sub oscillator adds girth, its oddly fast and deep LFO modulation capabilities allow it to create uniquely whacked-out modular synth-like tones, and Roland's famous stereo chorus "ensemble" circuit is beautifully implemented, adding a boatload of width and dimension.

The Bladerunner Synth (Yamaha CS-80) With Meris Mercury 7 & Hedra

video by Perfect Circuit

"Few synthesizers have achieved the legendary status of Yamaha’s CS-80, and it’s always a treat when one comes through our store. When it was released back in 1977, it was state of the art for its time in offering a generous number of presets (some fixed and some programmable), two synth layers per voice, and excellent performance features like polyphonic aftertouch and a flexible ribbon controller.

Among the most iconic uses of the CS-80 was in the score for the 1982 film Blade Runner, written by Greek composer Vangelis. Along with the synthesizer itself, the music of the film is renowned for its use of space and ambience supplied by lush reverbs and effects processors. Coincidentally, expert pedal and pro audio designers Meris have a Blade Runner inspired reverb pedal called Mercury 7 that aims to recreate these dramatic reverberant textures with ease. Pairing this pedal with the CS-80 was an obvious choice, and we also made use of their Hedra pitch shifter to add another layer of magic to some sounds.
