Moogfest 2019 Announces GAS, Kimbra, Tim Hecker & The Konoyo Ensemble, Martin Gore, Matthew Dear +more for its initial lineup

via Moogfest

Durham, N.C. [February 21, 2019] – Celebrating the 15th year since its inaugural event in 2004, Moogfest returns to Durham, NC on April 25–28 to honor the innovative spirit of sonic pioneer Bob Moog. The first wave of Moogfest’s 2019 lineup celebrates artists from the festival’s 15 year run, introduces new talent who are creating the sounds of tomorrow, and reaffirms the intimate, artist-attendee connection for which the festival is known.

Joining Moogfest’s electronic odyssey for the first time are GAS, the best-known alias of hyper-prolific composer and Kompakt co-founder Wolfgang Voigt; polymathic songwriter and producer Kimbra; and Herzblut Recordings founder and techno producer Stephan Bodzin. Moogfest welcomes back ambient experimentalist Tim Hecker, who will be joined by The Konoyo Ensemble, idiosyncratic electronic composer Matthew Dear, and Swedish techno minimalist The Field. Moogfest again explores the boundaries between artist and audience through an interactive daytime program of workshops, masterclasses, and two-way conversations. This year features a creative exchange with Martin Gore of Depeche Mode.

As a platform for sonic experimentation, Moogfest invites artists to express themselves in new formats and debut new works. This year will see the return of the staple longform Durational Performances. Noise veterans A Place to Bury Strangers and IDM artist, sound designer and coder Richard Devine will each present four-hour performances. Iconoclastic ambient and musique concrète composer William Basinski, who has sampled the sounds of black holes colliding, will lead this year’s Sleep Concert.

Also joining the 2019 lineup are songwriter, beatmaker and label boss Suzi Analogue; avant garde composer Lucrecia Dalt; R&B futurist Ouri; upstart Raleigh-born rapper and producer Mez; darkwave duo Minimal Violence; polyglottic analog synth-pop artist Ela Minus; post-rave renegade and modular enthusiast Baseck; pop experimentalist Meghan Remy’s project U.S. Girls; breakout film score composer Drum & Lace; sound designer LP Giobbi; electro-thrash provocateurs Fartbarf, interdisciplinary performance artist Lisa E. Harris; visual artist and producer Debit; and techno DJ, producer and Fever Am label owner Mor Elian.

Moogfest’s unique format of daytime presentations and nighttime performances also offers an unprecedented platform for artistic discovery, inviting audiences to step inside the creative machine and learn the process behind the production. Two artists at the forefront of artistic education, Cuckoo and Mylar Melodies, will each lead workshops and performances. With a special focus on output that blurs divisions and defies categorization, the festival also welcomes the thought-provoking work of multimedia musician and comic McQueen.

Upcoming announcements will complete the full 2019 performer and presenter lineup and detail the wide range of experiences attendees can look forward to at Moogfest including this year’s Spatial Sound performances and artist-led workshops. At Moog’s Pop Up Factory, Engineer Workshop passholders will delve into synthesis at the foundational level and come away with their own hand-built, limited-edition, unreleased Moog synthesizer. Durham’s American Tobacco Campus will once again host interactive music technology exhibitions in the Modular Marketplace, including the Moog Circuit Bending Challenge and the presentation of this year’s Moog Innovation Award. World-renowned instrument designers, futurists, creatives, entrepreneurs, scientists, pioneering educators and thought leaders from across the social spectrum will participate in keynotes and daytime presentations that will complement local artist programming and free outdoor events open to audiences of all ages.

Now in its 15th year, Moogfest continues to distinguish itself as the destination festival for the synthesis of music, art, and technology. A limited number of tickets remain on sale. More info is available at Moogfest.com.

MOOG SOUND LAB: Divine Fits - Civilian Stripes

Published on Mar 7, 2013 MoogMusicInc·253 videos

"Every year during Moogfest we hold our annual circuit bending contest, 2012's contest asked electronic and music aficionados to create a circuit bent sampler featuring sounds from the incredibly popular Moog Google Doodle. This year's winning sampler was then used by many of the festival's headliners during Moogfest 2012 where Google was present to document the whole process.

Google's mini-doc chronicling this melding of music and technology and the resulting tracks, "Moogfest 2012: The Sound Lab EP", can be seen, heard, and downloaded at:
http://goo.gl/djmR5

During Moogfest 2012 Divine Fits tore through the Moog Sound Lab and reworked Civilian Stripes the what they said was the most acoustic song of their debut album "A Thing Called Devine Fits" in to the Moog heavy song you see here.

A standard drum kit was replaced by three Rack Mount Voyagers triggered by a Trap-Kat midi controller. A Little Phatty and Minitaur filled out the keys section while lead singer Dan Boeckner filled in with the 10th anniversary Minimoog Voyager.

You can see more Moog Sound Lab videos from "Moogfest 2012: The Sound Lab EP" including El-P and Exitmusic exclusively at:

BENT: The Google Moog Mini-Doc - Story Behind the Moog Google Doodle

Uploaded on Dec 21, 2012 googleplay·208 videos

"Get free tracks from Carl Craig, El-P, Divine Fits and Exitmusic: http://goo.gl/DkYIB
Watch performances from the Moog Sound Lab: http://moogfest.com/

In May of 2012, Google turned its homepage over to Moog, creating a playable version of one of their synthesizers. The synth "Doodle" was used by over 300 million users, and brought a new level of attention to the Asheville, N.C.-based company. Acknowledging this, Moog, as part of their 3rd Annual Circuit Bending Contest held during the Moogfest music event, called for enthusiasts and benders to create a sampler and use the Google Moog Doodle as the basis for it's sounds. The winning sampler was unlike anything we'd ever seen, and we contacted some of our favorite musicians, including Detroit techno pioneer Carl Craig and hip-hop icon El-P, to create or rework songs using this new tool. The resulting tracks and documentary chronicle the dynamic relationship between technology and music, and how each field pushes the other in unpredictable and amazing directions.

Siel Cruise Synthesiser

YouTube Uploaded by nounandnumber on Mar 18, 2011

via this auction
"This is the Siel Cruise I have for sale on eBay. It is from around 1981-1986 and is a combination of the Siel Mono and the Orchestra 2.

The video is an example of the sounds it can make, rather than me playing it, so it is more for information than entertainment.

A Siel Orchestra was the source of the lovely keyboard on The Rip by Portishead, which can be heard on the polysynth piano preset of the Cruise. It may be battered, but it is still capable of some good sounds, especially the strings which sound great.

This video will be removed upon sale of the synth. Hopefully Adrian Utley nor Sonicstate.com mind having their interview footage included, but I will remove it at their request."

Also
"I would like to know though if my comparisons to the Siel Orchestra 2 are valid. I was always under the impression that the Cruise is a Mono & Orchestra in one box, with some extras, such as the EQ, missing. Any opinions would be appreciated."

And some interesting bits from the auction (as always be sure to read the full description at the auction if you intend to bid):
"Siel were an Italian company in the eighties, and from what little information I can find about it, the Cruise appears to be a union of the Siel Mono and the Siel Orchestra II. Plenty of specific information can be found here but some of the interesting features I want to point out are: the full polyphony on the poly section, the mono and poly sections can be played in unison and there is an option for a keyboard split as well, and the outputs include a mono+poly and poly only output. The LFO on the mono section is a little unusual in that it works after a short delay (this is by design, I should add).

I have assembled a little audio slideshow of what it is capable of with a whole host of pictures of the actual synth for sale on You Tube. There should also be a list of suggestions by You Tube of the few other videos demonstrating this synth which may be worth your time...

Now for the modification. At the same time as I bought the synth I was doing a lot of circuit bending and decided to tentatively explore the possibilities on the mono section. This was a bit foolish as a) it was on something running on mains power and b) was on something I could not afford to loose (I broke a Yamaha CS01 circuit bending. It still smarts). Fortunately nothing untoward happened and the result is a simple bypass of the Rd125 resistor that gives an harmonic distortion to the monosynth with no ill effects to the rest. Again, all this can be seen and heard on the video.

What really pleased me though was discovering, in an interview with Adrian Utley from Portishead that some of my favourite sounds from Third (mainly the great arpeggio at the end of The Rip) came from a Siel Orchestra (see above) which can be heard in the piano preset of the Cruise. However the cruise does lack the Orchestra's EQ so it isn't an exact likeness, and I expect the drive in production of the synth was for 'cleaner' sounds, which does give it a richer string sound as it is it a more recent synth. Still it is nice for a relatively obscure synth to get some love, rather than the usual Moog, EMS suspects, but that is probably because I cannot afford them..."

D-Lab Electronics Multi Plexer

images via this auction

Details:
"GETLOFI.Com
The Multi-Plexer will produce those famous sounds that you grew up hearing on Lost and Space, The Forbidden Planet, Star Trek and other Sci-Fi classics. The name was assigned, simply because that’s what it does. The circuit sends an analog signal around in a circle, bending and distorting it, like a ring modulator. However, the MP is a FREE RUNNING Synth. No input is required for it to operate. But if you input a signal (like your guitar) it will ride the MP self generated wave. The end product is a result of many manipulations. I cannot describe its sounds in words. Please listen to the links and judge for yourself.

Multi-Plexer.MP3
Multi-Plexer.MP3
Multi-Plexer.Wav

Circuit:
The circuit is a basic pure Analog Synth (not noisy digital) with Depth, Sustain, Impact, Rate, Frequency and Volume adjustments. Only TOP Quality components were utilized. “Spared no expense” The circuit board was custom manufactured using a photo-etch system. It runs on 2- 9vdc batteries (included). Totally isolated circuit will not produce hum or ground loops on your Guitar amp or stereo as other plug in the wall synths do. This is a great gadget to add to your rock band as a creepy, self running, sound generator. It’s also a lot of fun to just play with on your home stereo. This device runs at a low frequency, therefore, it responds well to Bass guitars and keyboard inputs. It's initial design was intended for generation of neat sound effects. The input jack came later.

Check out the MP3 files that my friend in OK sent me (see links above). The original circuit was developed in the 1970’s. 30 of them have sold on the ebay so far. See my feedback for great comments on this device. This gadget is not available anywhere besides D-Lab. In other words, you will be getting a very unique item. My investment per unit is $70.00 (parts), excluding numerous hours of layout and construction time. The cost have elevated due to the cosmetic upgrades. I am doing my best to provide a top notch product. I realize that my gadget is small league compared to the big hitters (Moog, Paia & Korg). I just hope that you enjoy it. Bands around the country have been e-mailing me with great reports incorporating the Multi-Plexer's weird sound into their gigs. This device is great for Band Background weird noise or making your instrument act crazy!

This device is intended for fun or interface with your band equipment, not for development of a new Outer Limits episode. The cost is much less than store bought models and it is fully portable, unlike anything else on the market. Please e-mail me with questions or concerns before bidding. Unit comes with a nifty overview sheet for operating this crazy instrument."
