Sound Sample: Loudest Warning Sing To Me (instrumental drone)

video upload by Matt Lowery

"Hi friends! Today I’m here with a pretty simple, short video showcasing the Loudest Warning Sing to Me panel. It’s a beautiful instrument, and combines a pair of Buchla 258’s with a small selection of serge modules in a single panel. The truth is, this was a video I captured as an Instagram post, but I was having such a nice time that 1 minute turned into 8 minutes pretty quickly! I remember when I was researching this format, there wasn’t a ton of content or sound samples of Sing To Me, so I figured I’d toss this out for posterity. A touch of reverb and delay were added in post. Have a great day."

Note this is the first post to feature a demo of the panel. One was listed for sale back in Nov here.

Some info & pics via Loudest Warning

"There are quite a few version of this around, some have different names.

258 VCO -> Triple Wave Shaper implementation: Above the 258 VCO’s is a Serge Triple Wave Shaper, normally this has three sections, but on panels with the above design the left hand shaper is one section, the right hand is two sections in series with VC 1 input tied to both of teh two sections simultaneously – configuration:

Bonus mixer between SSG and DTG: This is a simple unity gain mixer with two inputs and one output. On the other side of the DTG (between it and the Dual VCA) are two more outputs which might be labelled PEAK/TROUGH, MIN/MAX or AND/OR, these are all different names for the same thing, that is minimum / maximum outputs derived from the two inputs to the bonus mixer. Some mixers also have a Full Wave Rectifier output.

Most / all other modules are stock and info about use of these can be found on the internet, but here are some interesting things here:

Great information on Serge in general and the Wave Multipliers in particular!"

New Random Source Serge Paperface Coming to SUPERBOOTH22

Follow-up to this post featuring the VC Resonant EQ.

1st Panel:
2x Oscillators Noise/Random
SSG
Dual Processor
Triple Waveshaper
Not sure what that last one on the corner is but it looks like it has a 1/4" output?

2nd Panel:
2xSequencers/Programmer
BiDi Router

Update: two more close-up pics of the oscillator section, a 3rd with a Precision VCO and Dual Universal Slope Generator, and the following:

"Designing the first generation of Serge modules in '72-'73 was a stab in the dark. Today, the redesign of these modules is like opening a door to a new universe. VCOs that track. Dual programmers featuring built-in sequencing and clock.
Silver on enamel panels, yet keeping to the spirit and patch-programmability of the original paperface panels. Glad to announce the first of several 50th anniversary Serge panels !

Serge"

Dr. Wiener Presents: Serge Modular 101: Using the Smooth and Stepped Generator (SSG)

Dr. Wiener

"This a full explanation of the Serge Modular SSG in the Eurorack Format from Random*Source. Here is a text description below from their site:

SERGE SMOOTH & STEPPED GENERATOR (SSG)
The Serge Smooth & Stepped Generator (SSG) is a complex multi-functional module which can be patch programmed to provide various slew and sample functions both for audio and CV signals. It is one of the essential Serge modules.

The Smooth section will place a positive and negative slew on input voltage transitions for lag effects, voltage controlled portamento and for low frequency filter applications.” In Cycle-mode (cycle jack patched to the input), the Smooth side “will oscillate yielding a voltage controlled triangle wave LFO. A high level into the HOLD input will enable the Smooth Function to be used as a track-and-hold circuit with voltage controlled slew rate.

The Stepped function can be used as a sample-and-hold with voltage controlled slew rate limiting. In Cycle mode, a pulse applied to the Sample input will generate complex staircase waveforms for control voltage applications and for use as audio signals.

The Coupler is an internal comparator which compares the output levels of the Smooth and the Stepped Generators. This output is useful for generating complex control voltages or random voltages.

The Random*Source version of the Smooth & Stepped Generator for Euro is a licensed and authorized adaption of the original Serge design that provides an increased audio range of the Smooth Generator and a bipolar (“hot”) Coupler output in addition to the regular (unipolar) Coupler output."

Serge 73-75 Voice And Control

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is a 73-75 Serge system with 2 panels, the Voice and the Control. Both were put together from the eDIY sets that were offered at the end of the year in 2019. In addition, LEDs were added to 2 of the slews, the envelope, and the SSG modules. This makes a big difference when using, as it provides feedback. The 2 open holes in the control panel were fitted with toggle switches on the negative slews, so you can make them cycle. Both panels have been calibrated.

Both hammond boats are connected together by 4 screws inside, as well as a rubber grommet that provides a channel between the 2 for the power to be distributed. The panels were fitted with potentiometers and then wired to the boards, which took a lot longer, but this gives you flexibility if you want to do future modifications. In fact, I'd recommend someone diy friendly buy this if they'd want to add more toggle switches, LEDs, etc. The PSU is a frequency central power unit that has a +6 volt regulator, needed for this Serge design. Jameco AC adapter included to power both panels.

Cosmetically, this is listed as 'very good' since there is a little bit of rash under the mounting screws and a few small marks here and there.

Comes with a bunch of banana cables from modular addict of varying color and length."

Random Source La Bestia II Demos

Published on Nov 5, 2019 Jae Ryan

Two demos by Jae Ryan. Also see La Bestia 2 by Random Source - overview, sounds, music by HAINBACH.

Video descriptions:

1. Random Source La Bestia II - 01
I got my first Serge panel in yesterday! It's a La Bestia II and I have to say. I regret waiting this long. As far as an "analog modular" panel goes, I think this one is just perfect. It took a little time to get going with all the serge patching requirements, but the arrival couldn't be any more rewarding :D
2. Random Source La Bestia II - 02
Another quick serge jam. The battery in my camera died so I kinda rushed it to get the gist.
I'm pinging the VCFQ with the SQ-1 and feeding it into the mixer. I also took two more outs from the filter and ran them separately into different sections of the wave multipliers. That's the second 2 sounds I bring in. It's crazy how much variety you can get out of a single "voice" when you have a panel this deep!
Later I bring in a little bit of the NTO into the variable slope with some random voltage modulating the decay time to give it a little feel :)
3. Random Source La Bestia II - 03
Another little plummy patch. Once again, I was too lazy to actually record and just recorded a still after the fact......
4. Random Source La Bestia II - 04
A big ol' drone this time with pretty much everything controlled by a self cycling SSG LFO. The main "big" bass part that comes in is the Variable Slope VCF self oscillating (thanks to some feedback patching) & ran through the bottom wave multiplier.
5. Random Source La Bestia II - 05
A lil' serge jam in which I explore AM. Eventually.

There's also a little bit of cocoquantus drone that plays in the beginning.

I'm using couple distings in a euroack skiff to quantize the stepped side of the SSG & the bass notes of the TKB too.
6. Random Source La Bestia II - 06
Serge drone patched up immediately after the last video.

Heavy use of the OTO BAM in this one.

Disting MK4 is quantizing the TKBs voltages.
7. Random Source La Bestia II - 07
I've had the serge put away for a little bit in order to explore some new gear while I wait for my Edelweiss panel to show up. I was craving the sound tonight though and decided to pull it out for this quick little ditty. I even took the time to set up the camera!

serge krell basic

Published on Oct 4, 2019 Todd Barton

"I've had many inquires from patrons about having some Serge content . . . yay! Originally pre-released to patrons https://www.patreon.com/synthtodd I'm now going public :-)

So...here we go: This is the most simple, basic, no-frills Krell patch on the Serge system that I can devise. Hopefully it will serve as a catalyst for your creativity and imagination to take it deeper, morph it, modulate it and incorporate it with other modules, patches and sonic equations.

Of course, it can be ported over the eurorack. The usual suspects would be in a Makenoise system SSG to Wogglebug, DUSG to Maths, NTO to DPO and VCA to Optomix. Enjoy!"

Random Source Serge Modular Edelweiss II 2018 Silver

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is a like-new, mint condition Serge Modular/Random*Source Edelweiss II. Barely used. The unit was built by the official Random*Source builder Darrin Wiener in June 2018 (Have receipt). Price includes boat, rack ears and power connector. Needless to say, the thing is impeccably and professionally built!

I am happy to ship international, and put down $80 as a baseline, but will need to confirm price depending on where you are! Local pickup in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

Can throw in a power supply that I am also listing super cheap if interested just message me!

from the Random*Source website:

Edelweiss II may look like an ideal control panel, but it is quite powerful in the audio range. Many R*S modules like the DSG mk2 and SSG have been optimized for audio performance and can be used as oscillators, filters, or lowpass gates."
