Moog Re-Introduces the Werkstatt-01 & CV Expander for $199

Moog Music Inc

"In this exploration of sound design and composition using the Werkstatt-01 analog synthesizer, Asheville-based electronic music producer and Moog Product Specialist Max Ravitz combines eight Werkstatt-01 synthesizers in a dynamic performance in the Moog Sound Lab.

Each of the eight Werkstatt-01 instruments provides a different element in the song ranging from booming kick drums to metallic hi-hats, and deep basses to wavering leads—many of which are based on the sounds found in the Werkstatt-01 Exploration Patchbook, which contains a variety of inspiring patches also designed by Ravitz. All eight Werkstatt-01 synthesizers in this performance are sequenced by the Winter Modular Eloquencer, with a touch of delay and reverb provided by the OTO Machines BIM and BAM to add dimension to the mix."

"Re-Introducing Werkstatt-01

Werkstatt-01 is a patchable and compact analog synthesizer. A gateway to the expansive world of analog synthesis, the instrument is a must-have for anyone interested in exploring classic Moog sound and circuitry through the unique, hands-on experience of a DIY synthesizer project. This affordable, easy-to-assemble kit requires no prior electronics experience and is a perfect afternoon (or Christmas morning) project.

The straightforward simplicity of Werkstatt-01’s design makes it an ideal jumping-off point to discover a limitless new world of analog sound design, and the included 3.5mm CV Expander makes it a no-brainer for everyone wishing to integrate the iconic Moog sound into their music. The 9" by 6" musical machine may be small, but the raw power and spectrum of the sound it produces is immense.

From Musical Exploration to Experimental Education

First introduced at Moogfest 2014 as part of the event’s Engineering Workshop, the Werkstatt-01 analog synthesizer has been admired as an essential introductory synth, a powerful standalone instrument, and an enhancement to any integrated electronic music ecosystem. Based on classic Moog circuitry, Werkstatt-01 was created to provide a hands-on understanding of how analog synthesizers work and encourage experimentation with sound through patching and interconnectivity.

The research and design that went into Werkstatt-01’s circuits, and the demand for more semi-modular exploratory analog instruments after its initial release, ultimately led to the development of some of today’s most expressive sound design machines: Mother-32, DFAM, Grandmother, Matriarch, and Subharmonicon.

More than a musical instrument, Werkstatt-01 has also served as an interactive educational tool in STEM curricula. The compact, versatile synthesizer has been the heart of the Georgia Tech Hackathon, a weekend-long competition that takes place each February at the Atlanta university’s Center for Music Technology, for six years and counting. The 2021 Georgia Tech Hackathon will be held virtually; see details here.

The easily mod-able analog synth kit has also proven to be a perfect learning ground for DIY modifications and the science of sound. This page of our website features a series of instructional videos to walk you through how to expand your instrument through breadboarding and arduino integration.

Classic Moog Sound & Circuitry

Werkstatt-01’s 100% analog circuits deliver the classic soul and futuristic sound Moog synthesizers are known for. Featuring a full-range analog oscillator with selectable waveforms for powerful sound and the legendary Moog Ladder Filter for precision harmonic sculpting, this instrument covers a vast expanse of sonic territory. Adding movement and modulation is as simple as engaging Werkstatt-01’s analog LFO circuit to simulate the motion of gently breathing waves, or crank up the LFO speed and summon cosmic laser beams. A two-stage analog envelope generator with sustain gives you control to shape dynamics, dialing in everything from lush electronic string swells to punchy basslines and organic percussion hits—and everything in between.

The included CV Expander allows you to enter the endless realms of modular synthesis, where new connections can be made and original sounds are unlocked. Patching inputs and outputs together from the 12 jacks of the 3.5mm patch bay will reconfigure Werkstatt-01’s circuits to create new signal paths and empower new sonic explorations. The included CV Expander also makes it easy to connect Werkstatt-01 to other Moog semi-modular synthesizers, Eurorack systems, or drum machines, enhancing any configuration with powerful analog sound."

Arturia Officially Announces MicroBrute - Press Release

"Arturia makes massive analogue splash with miniature MicroBrute

'I really love the sound of the original MiniBrute, and the MicroBrute’s got that character and can be even wilder. You can get all kinds of crazy and musical interactions going on with other analogue gear and drum machines. Combine the two together and you’re rocking!'

- Adrian Utley, 2013 (Portishead)

GRENOBLE, FRANCE: music software and hardware company Arturia is proud to announce availability of the MicroBrute Analog Synthesizer — an amazingly compact and bijou, semi-modular analogue monosynth with inbuilt step sequencer, boasting MIDI, USB, and CV connectivity, together with a whole host of unique features — as of October 25...

Arturia’s award-winning MiniBrute Analog Synthesizer rapidly reset the price/performance ratio benchmark when soaring through the subtractive synthesis sound barrier last year to much critical acclaim and subsequent success. Today it is joined by its equally as big- sounding little brother, the MicroBrute Analog Synthesizer. Putting all the basic building blocks of an analogue synth classic into an even more compact and bijou package that’s pure hand-ons fun at an affordable price, the MicroBrute is guaranteed to bring big smiles to go with those big sounds!

But the MicroBrute Analog Synthesizer is actually anything but basic. For starters, just like its big brother, the OSCILLATOR that beats at its musical heart features SAW, TRIANGLE, and SQUARE waveforms that are all mixable to help shape the resulting sound without the limitations imposed by comparable contemporary and vintage synths alike. Additionally, the new Overtone oscillator generates additional harmonic content, ranging from one octave down to a fifth above the base OSCILLATOR pitch, while the Sub > Fifth control can continuously sweep spectrum. Moreover, Metalizer adds complex harmonics to the TRIANGLE waveform for creating harsh, harmonically-rich sounds, while Ultrasaw adds a lively and bright ensemble effect to the SAWTOOTH waveform — perfect for crafting sounds suited to dance anthems. And let’s not forget the all-important Pulse Width control for creating nasal-thin tones or rich square sounds. Simply speaking, never before has such a small, single-oscillator synth sounded so big!

Of course, filtering helps shape any analogue synth’s sound — be it big or small, and here the MicroBrute does not disappoint. Indeed, its distinctive-sounding Steiner-Parker FILTER plays a big part in helping give the MicroBrute a unique sound — again, just like its big brother. This filter design dates back to the Steiner-Parker Synthacon, an analogue monosynth built by the namesake Salt Lake City-based synth manufacturer between 1975 and 1979. Its HP (high-pass), BP (bandpass), and LP (lowpass) modes make for far more filtering flexibility than that found in synths many times the price! And that’s before factoring Arturia’s acclaimed Brute FactorTM into the equation, adding anything from subtle overdrive to full-blown intermodulation havoc — choose your settings, and let the fun begin!

Speaking of modulation, the easily accessible, front-panel mounted MOD MATRIX is a Volt per Octave-standard patchable system of modulation routing with ENV (envelope) out, LFO (low frequency oscillator) out, Ultrasaw modulator in, PWM (pulse width modulation) in, Metal (Metalizer) in, Overtone/Sub modulator in, Filter cutoff in, and Pitch in — meaning more in-depth, inbuilt sound-sculpting possibilities, as well as allowing Arturia’s own MicroBrute to be easily brought into the interfacing mix, or mixing and matching with third-party modular synth systems for far-out sonic explorations! Dig as deep as you need or dare to go with the MicroBrute!

Similarly, the new eight-Pattern step SEQUENCER is an almost endless source of inspiration and rhythmic creativity — step input notes and rests to create storable sequences that can be played back and switched between on the fly at a variable Rate or synchronised to external MIDI clock. Meanwhile, MIDI, USB, and CV GATE connectivity, of course, combine to ensure that the MicroBrute is ready and willing to talk to the outside electronic musical instrument world wherever it may find itself. It’s even blessed with an external audio Input with Input Level control, so why not use it to process whatever you feel like sticking into its 1/4-inch socket — within reason, of course!

With a space-saving 25-note mini-keyboard and weighing in at only 1.75kg, the MicroBrute Analog Synthesizer is truly compact and bijou, but punches well above its weight with a rip-roaring analogue sound spanning woofer-flapping bass, screaming leads, ear-opening effects, wave-folded growls, punchy drum sounds galore, and much in-between and beyond. Pick one up from an authorised Arturia dealer today!

MicroBrute can be purchased from the Arturia online store (http://www.arturia.com/evolution/en/buy/online-shop.html) or any authorised dealer for €329.00 EUR/$349.00 USD

Forbin Accenta Electronica & RADIOPHONIC EXPLORATIONS

YouTube Uploaded by JeffreyPlaide on Jun 4, 2011

"Forbin Accenta Electronica is an entirely electronically-produced experimental composition using the KX-Synth X16software synthesizer. The KX-Synth X16 is a successful and extremely flexible software re-creation of the famous EMS VCS3 Putney or various Synthi models, using a virtual pin matrix to inter-connect the various oscillators, filters and modulation effects together. For this work, twin KX-Synth X16 synthesizers were connected in parallel within the VST host. Both synthesizers responded to playing, making the sounds truely bi-timbral, with both outputs able to be recorded by the host software for later integration into a multi-track environment. Various presets were used and modified to create etheral tones. Most of the patches employ ring modulation , or were configured by the virtual pin matrix to add ring modulation and extra feedback delay to create metallic and etheral melody lines. Those who every wanted to play an EMS VCS3 or Synthi synthesizer can have a feel for what it is like playing a KX-Synth X16 VST synthesizer on their own computer. The experience is extremely satisfying and open for much exploration and experimentation. The first mix comprised a reverberant tonal line with two tracks of a lone reverberant synthesizer line with heavy short feedback delay. These tracks were mixed down to one stereo track and slowed down significantly to create a more dreamy combination. Added to this was a metallic vibration tone with very short delay and heavy feedback. This was faded in and out as appropriate to the first mix. At the end are two time-shifted tracks of a sample of the ending, looped, then progressively slowed down until a very low frequency combination is heard receding into the distance. This then concluded the composition. The final mix was twice-compressed to level out the dynamics, then this version was used for the video. The visuals comprise vintage digital and analogue computers from the last 50 years - including UNIVAC, ORACLE and other systems, including SketchPad by Ivan Sutherland and various radar systems such as SAGE. These images were colourised with painting software, then keyed over modulating derivatives of a striped pattern, or motion-tracked versions of other images. The music reminded one of the feel of the music score in the film The Forbin Project; so the title of the work pays homage to this science fiction classic. The vintage computer images help to connect the music to previous generations when the technological landscape of computer science was of a different order."

Moog Matriarch Synthesizer Demos with Mikael Jorgensen & Philip Cornish

Moog Matriarch Synthesizer Demo with Mikael Jorgensen - All Playing, No Talking Published on Apr 25, 2019 Musician's Friend

"Moog Matriarch is a semi-modular, 4-note paraphonic synthesizer and the newest member of the Mother family of synths.

Demoed here by Mikael Jorgensen of Wilco, Matriarch's design is based on some of Bob Moog's most revered circuits. The all-analog signal path features 4 powerful VCOs, dual ladder filters, stereo delay, an arpeggiator and a performance friendly 256-note sequencer.

The 4 VCO design can be played in three distinct modes: 4-note paraphonic, 2-note paraphonic and monophonic. Each oscillator can select from a variety of waveshapes and octaves, allowing you to create incredibly rich and harmonically complex sounds. As mentioned, Matriarch features two classic Moog Ladder Filters that can be used in three distinct modes: parallel (High Pass/Low Pass), stereo (Low Pass/Low Pass), and series (HP/LP).

Where Grandmother featured an analog spring reverb, Matriarch features a dual analog delay inspired by the MF-104M Moogerfooger circuit. This delay module offers up to 700ms of stereo or ping-pong style repeats.

Although Matriarch has 90 patch points, enough to satisfy even the most adventurous of sound designers, it can be played right out of the box thanks to its intuitive layout and signal flow."

Up From Down: Electronic Feedback Explorations - on the Elby Designs' EuroSerge

"I was asked to compose/perform a modular synthesizer piece for a 50th-year celebration of the film 2001 a Space Oddessy to take place in Santa Cruz CA. It was a sound representation of astronaut Dave Bowman piloting a shuttle through the Stargate to Jupiter. It was done by controlling feedback through an analog modular synthesizer. It is intended to evoke the nearly out of control energy involved in space flight. These are nine related feedback explorations developed in preparation.

Mystic Explorations by The Animals at Night

"'Mystic Explorations' is a collection of songs written and recorded around the Mystic desktop synthesizer, which I designed for Recovery Effects. Each track was recorded in the early evenings of February, 2024, where I would start by going for a walk with my dog, Jackson, looking for inspiration. These cold, night-time walks centered around a cemetary in our neighborhood, known as a home and hunting spot for coyotes. I would record audio from these walks and use it as the backdrop for each track as I worked on it.

The Mystic is used as the main sound source for these songs, while accompanied by drum machines such as the MPC One, Syncussion SY-1 (built by myself), Roland T-8, and Roland Drumatix TR-06. I used modulation sources from my Eurorack synthesizer, MPC One, and Korg SQ-1. I used effects devices such as the Vongon Polyphrase, Chase Bliss Habit, and Strymon Magneto. All of these effects were synced via MIDI and / or CV and used in tandem with the CV controls on the Mystic to further modulate and enhance the compositions. I recorded bass guitar on the opening track, 'Dream or Memory'.

This was an exciting project to showcase the many sounds the Mystic can achieve, as well as challenging myself to create an entire record with one primary sound source. I hope you enjoy it as much as I had fun making it.

Moog Grandmother Analog Explorations + Final Review
Analog Synthesizer Demo by Rik Marston
**Watch in HD!!** **Turn it UP!!**

Here it is right out of the box, no patching.
Super awesome MOOG GRANDMOTHER semi-modular
analog synthesizer, almost perfection I'd say (minus the
Ultimate Support Stand issue). I would recommend this
synth to anyone interested in the Classic Moog Vibe,
funky basses, epic leads.... I can go on! Very fun to play!
It's super solid, built like a tank, knobs are sweet to twist!
Final Rating: 8.9 out of 10. Just wish we can have this
in a 49 key and fix the issues underneath so Ultimate
Support Stand users don't have to put something under
the Grandmother to keep it from bouncing up & down.
There are some sounds in this demo that are very LOW
so watch your speakers & headphones! It's earthshaking!
I LOVE THE MOOG GRANDMOTHER!!! WIN! WIN! WIN!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for watching!"

The Driskell Serge

Playlist:
"W" - Part 1 of 3 of WAD: A Trio For Richard Driskell.
"A" - Part 2 of 3 of WAD: A Trio For Richard Driskell.
"D" - Part 3 of 3 of WAD: A Trio For Richard Driskell.

"'I Am Because We Are'

An Announcement of New Explorations and a New Composition Project

Here is 'WAD: A Trio For Richard Driskell.'

It is composed of three improvisations where I explore, for the first time, the Wilson Analog Delay (WAD.) Even though it is not a fully operating module (no input 2, for the moment) it is still remarkable and something that I’ve had few chances to play with.

So here I am, using the WAD from Richard’s Serge with patch elements from the Mystery Serge, combining them for new explorations.

While I hope that these Improvisations are interesting in themselves, I know that the videos will raise some questions about Richard and his Serge system.

I have known Richard as a friend for about a decade. We met at one of my early (I think the first) Church of the Super Serge concerts at Robotspeak in San Francisco. I quickly came to know him as a wonderful photo documenter of the San Francisco experimental music scene. You have seen me represent myself and my music here many times using his beautiful images.

Over time I learned that Richard was also a member (the drummer) of the important early synth punk group, The Units. Eventually, as our friendship developed, I learned that Richard went on to pursue synthesis directly and had a Serge system. One I was familiar with, in fact, because it was used by LX Rudis in his performances and we had shared the stage several times and had even performed together at the Outsound New Music Summit (with Dmitri Bronson) using that same system.

Richard’s Serge is now in my hands.

When I asked Richard how I could talk about how and why his Serge is in my hands, he said that he and these circumstances are an open book.

Richard is in the end stages of cancer. It is his second such fight over the years and while he has persistently fought it and continues to at this time, everyone who is close to him appreciates every day that he is still with us.

When Richard thought about the future of his synth, he decided that it was most important that it remain active in the Bay Area modular music scene. With this in mind, he contacted me and we discussed how, in my hands, the system could continue to be heard and seen, and how it could also take on a community-building role through efforts that I could put forward using it.

Richard’s thoughtful stewardship of his synthesizer and its future is a remarkable sign of the maturity of the Serge world both in terms of age, and more importantly, in terms of the continuity and continuation of our community as an important artistic and technological entity.

As you can see, this trio of improvisations unpacks a lot more than just new music or sonic explorations. It unpacks the whole of what we are as artists, as a community, and as people who support each other because we know each others’ value to what we all are.

With this, I announce a longterm composition project to be conducted at my studio, where composers contribute using the Driskell Serge. The project, being developed to start soon, is called, “I Am Because We Are” and is dedicated to the wonderful artist, musician and community builder, Richard Driskell, to benefit experimental music and the Bay Area modular music scene.

Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith - EARS - Album Teaser

"Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith will release EARS, her newest album of vibrant synthesizer explorations mixed with orchestral instruments and vocals, April 1st on Western Vinyl.

'In recording Ears, my intention is to take listeners on a sonic motion ride through a futuristic jungle. I am inspired by the works of Moebius and Miyazaki - in particular the film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind – and I wanted to play with visceral sounds that pull one between feelings of beauty and dissonance, chaos and order. My hope is that, on a straight through listen, in a darkened room, on a loud stereo, Ears will inspire a rich visual narrative in listeners' minds.'
