OMBIENT: Live!@EMEAPP (4/22/23)

video upload by EMEAPP

"This was a fun night. On April 22, 2023 we held our first video shoot in our live studio space with an audience in attendance with Ombient and Electric Diamond on the bill.

Ombient (Mike Hunter) was the opening performer on the bill and in the space of 30 minutes, he took the entire room on an electronic sonic journey complete with custom projections by PYXL8R. Armed with his custom Synthesizers.com modular system, Koma Elektronik Komplex Sequencer, Rhodes Chroma, Oberheim Matrix-6, ARP 2600 re-issue and a slew of effects, Ombient's performance was ultimately a swirling, constantly evolving set reminiscent of artists such as Tangerine Dream and Ashra.

A big thank you to Ombient (Mike Hunter), PXYL8R (Ken Palmer) Electric Diamon (Stuart Diamond, Don Slepian and Karen Bentley Pollick) and to all of our volunteers for helping to make this night a well-oiled and enjoyable experience for all.

You can find us at www.emeapp.org where we invite you to join us as a member."

Superbooth 2023: Doefper Has New Modules For Polyphony and more

video upload by sonicstate

"Herr Doepfer - the man who started it all! He showed us their latest polyphonic systems. The first one is a polyphonic portamento controller that allows the glide function to be available in a polyphonic system. It has three CV inputs and four CV outputs which are already internally wired to the oscillators.

The other polyphonic module they showed is a polyphonic mixer that can mix several polyphonic VCOs to obtain a fatter sound. It has three polyphonic channels with four voices each, and internally it's made of 12 VCAs arranged in a matrix of 3 by 4. It has a very special feature where if channel B is not used, the module generates the sub-octaves of the channel A.

They also showed a phaser module which is a copy of a phaser from the 70s called Schulte Compact Phasing A that was used by famous musicians such as Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Kraftwerk and more. In the meantime, these units are available second-hand at very high prices, so Doepfer decided to build a copy of this phaser."

love on a real train // mc-707 cover

video upload by geomagnetics

"This is a cover of the great Tangerine Dream song. I wanted to stick close to the original version while keeping it strictly on the MC-707 and not use external gear. I've loved this song for as long as I can remember but covering it gave me a whole new respect for what they did in those studios before computers and grooveboxes.
I sequenced it all except for a few sweeps and fades which ends up pretty boring to look at. So I threw in some holiday footage"

'Old School Jam' All-modular, Step Sequencer, Bucket Brigade Delay, Eurorack FX, and no quantiser!

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"Un-quantised, old-school sequencer fun: Inspired by early sequenced electronica such as Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze, much of whose music used a Moog 960 sequencer, which didn't have quantising features, and were sometimes difficult to tune accurately or reliably. Such as the track 'Phaedra' by Tangerine Dream, during which the Moog performing the opening pattern had to be re-tuned during the actual recording, and it was left on the album! Yet it sounds great, it's imperfect tuning adds so much to the atmosphere of the music, irrespective if it was deliberate or a 'happy accident'.

Here I use an un-quantised sequencer, in fact an Erica Synths Sequential Switch, with it's CV expander that turns it into a great little 8-step sequencer. I also run it through the AJH Synth CV Mix, to offset the CV going to the oscillator, allowing me to push the output into the negative CV range. I then send this shifted signal to the VCO's frequency modulation input instead of the 1V/Oct... just to make it more difficult to tune! Seriously though, this was a fun experiment, and taking off the digital stabilisers (or quantisers) once in a while is highly recommended, and a good learning experience. This was an all-modular session - no external FX or mixing, just Eurorack modules for all functions.

The AJH SYNTH Eurorack range consists of high-end modules, all hand-made in the UK, most of which are based on classic, vintage designs, authentically recreating the circuitry of much sought-after analogue instruments and technologies of the past, whilst greatly expanding them, and bringing them to modern Eurorack levels of convenience, limitless flexibility, and reliability.

Check out the AJH Synth playlists for module 'User Guides', and 'Patch of The Week' videos, which will be either performances or 'how to' guides, detailing functions/methods, and a range of sounds, some familiar, some less so, containing a patch sheet at the end to show you how to construct it for yourself.

Meet us and the modules in person this year at Superbooth 23, Berlin, on May 11th to 13th.

New Cherry Audio Mercury-6 Reveal

video upload by Cherry Audio

Update: user videos added below.

"Cherry Audio's Mercury-6 is a virtual synthesizer instrument that emulates and expands on the renowned Jupiter-6, just in time for its 40th anniversary! Mercury-6 captures all that is exceptional in this treasured polyphonic classic, boosts its extraordinary feature set for today's DAW production and workflow, and celebrates the ground-breaking innovation from the era that changed music forever. If you've long yearned to explore the Jupiter-6, you'll love Mercury-6!"

via Cherry Audio

Mercury-6 is a meticulous recreation of the Jupiter-6 analog synthesizer, just in time for its 40th anniversary! Sandwiched between the earlier Jupiter-4 and Jupiter-8 models in name only, the sophisticated Jupiter-6 has sometimes been considered a sleeper release. These days, it has persevered to become one of Roland's most notable and coveted classic synthesizers due to its distinctive dark and complex character. Mercury-6 captures all that is exceptional in this treasured polyphonic classic, boosts its extraordinary feature set for today's DAW production and workflow, and celebrates the ground-breaking innovation from the era that changed music forever.

If you've long yearned to explore the Jupiter-6, you'll love Mercury-6!

The Year Everything Changed

Released in 1983 as a more affordable alternative to the flagship eight-voice Jupiter-8, the six-voice Jupiter-6 nevertheless staked out an essential position in the history of analog polysynths. Though similar in appearance and feature set, the Jupiter-6 stood apart from the Jupiter-8 in its sound and capabilities. Unlike earlier Roland polysynths with lowpass filters plus a rudimentary non-resonant highpass filter, the Jupiter-6 featured a true multimode filter with 24 dB/oct lowpass, 24 dB/oct highpass, or 12 dB/oct bandpass modes. This versatile filter design lent a more aggressive sound than previous Jupiters, making the Jupiter-6 a natural for cutting-edge techno and electro styles.

Though something of a "hidden feature," the Jupiter-6 VCOs supported multiple simultaneous waveforms, and its two LFOs and oscillator cross mod capabilities provided extensive modulation possibilities. Its earthshaking solo and poly unison modes enabled massive lead and bass sounds, and it was notably one of the first synthesizers to include the then-new MIDI protocol.

Although often praised for its harmonic complexity and ability to cut through a mix, the cost-cutting in the Jupiter-6 design resulted in some disadvantages. Output was mono only and it was limited to six-voice polyphony. The Jupiter-6 had an impressive (for the time) split keyboard and patch preset storage functionality, but this six-voice maximum hampered its potential. And though it was considerably less expensive than the Jupiter-8, its timing was ill-fated when the digital revolution was ignited by the release of Yamaha's revolutionary DX-7 FM digital synth the same year.

Despite its noteworthy character, the Jupiter-6 is not one of those synths immediately identified with recognizable sounds from hit songs. Nevertheless, it was the Jupiter-6 behind the bass line of Ray Parker Jr.'s classic "Ghostbusters," and it found purchase in the work of Human League, Tangerine Dream, Thomas Dolby, Trans-X, Vangelis, and Devo. In a testament to its staying power over the decades, its popularity grew in genres such as big beat, house, and techno through The Chemical Brothers, Moby, and The Crystal Method. Electronic music duo Orbital has been a vocal proponent of the Jupiter-6 and, more recently, it has been a significant part of the sound of Daft Punk and Junkie XL.

Mercury-6: 40 Years in the Making

Cherry Audio's Mercury-6 brings the Jupiter-6 experience into the future and celebrates the invaluable contribution that MIDI itself has made to the music community over the past 40 years. Mercury-6 captures all that is exceptional in this classic and boosts the extraordinary feature set and functionality for today's DAW production and workflow. We've added velocity sensitivity, improved the split mode, and added a layer mode capable of stacking two different sounds simultaneously with per-layer stereo panning, detuning, and sustain. A panel control lets users easily select and navigate between these layers and includes a utility function for exchanging settings between the lower and upper layers, or even between presets. And with polyphony extended to 16 notes, Mercury-6 won't easily run out of voices.

We've reproduced the arpeggiator, including the hidden Down/Up mode of the original, and augmented it by adding a Random mode and MIDI tempo sync. A chord memory mode enables multiple notes to be stored and played back with a single key. We've improved the functionality of the LFOs with a retrigger for LFO-1 and an always-on option for LFO-2, both syncable to MIDI tempo.

We've also introduced an integrated studio-quality effects panel with brilliant-sounding distortion, phaser, flanger/chorus, delay, and reverb. With additional touches such as per-layer drift control, over 500 expertly designed presets, and flexible MIDI mapping, Mercury-6 will satisfy both vintage synth aficionados and today's music producer.

Mercury 6 vs Jupiter 6 // Does the Cherry Audio sound like the Roland ...?
video upload by Starsky Carr

"How does the Mercury 6 stack up against the original? Cherry Audio are killing it with these releases, and this one is great. I can't think of another Jupiter 6 emulation out there. It was quite a unique synth in its day with a super fast LFO (100Hz), sync 2-ways, cross mod with modulation, a second LFO and bitimbral. Quite a cool thing.

Here I've not lingered on the more prosaic functions and sound. We all know the Cherry Audio stuff sounds good - so here I've dug into if it's doing those Jupiter 6 specialities like Cross Mod and Sync...

and also because the hardware was dying!! Another good reason for getting thew software :) I had to finish this before it cut out..!

M2Synth Sequencer 192 Testing - Tangram Cover

video upload by John L Rice

"I recently finished building the Sequencer 192 kit from Soundtronics’ M2Synth modular line. 🥳 In the back of the manual they have a tutorial on how to program the opening sequence for Tangerine Dream’s famous piece Tangram. It was a good way to get to know the sequencer better. (I dialed in the synth sound from memory so I’m like way off! 😊)

Kits will be available soon in MOTM and MU compatable formats on the Soundtronics.co.uk site and prebuilt modules will be available on the M2Synth.com site."

Rough Sequencing Tutorial: Love On A Real Train by Tangerine Dream

video upload by John L Rice

"A friend was asking for advice on sequencing this pattern and this was the easiest/quickest method I came up with. While not perfect it may serve as at least a starting point for anyone who wants to try it themselves?

The basic notes are F, Eb, F, C, F, Bb, C and by turning off certain gates the basic rhythm is created. (Be sure to tune the 'off' steps to the previous note so they are 'tied' together) I used a Moon Modular 569 sequencer but any 16 step sequencer could work.

Additional rhythmic motion is created by adding audio delays. I used a couple Strymon Engineering pedals (Timeline and BigSky)"

Patch of the Week: Whistle Lead (Tomita/Tangerine Dream) Using self-oscillating Filter/VCF as a VCO

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"This sound is inspired by lead sounds of the 70's/80's from Isao Tomita and Tangerine Dream (Remote Viewing), but will also be reminiscent of Kate Bush's 'All we ever wanted', and even Jeff Wayne's 'War of The Worlds' musical. It uses a filter/VCF in self-oscillation as a VCO, controlling it melodically, with envelopes and noise to help recreate the sounds. No VCO/oscillator is needed in the patch, and white or pink noise is optional, but necessary to get a Tomita-like whistle sound. Tomita originally used a Moog modular system for these sounds, so given that the AJH Synth MiniMod system and it's Transistor Ladder Filter are directly based on the early R.A.Moog version of the Minimoog, it's possible to get very close to such sounds. However, I've not tried to emulate it exactly, but you can see that the basis for this patch is very easily customisable, so it's a very useful synth patch to understand for a variety of musical applications. Patch sheet PDF can be downloaded here: https://kvisit.com/8AE/rv4G

Check out the AJH Synth playlists for module 'User Guides', and 'Patch of The Week' videos, which will be either performances or 'how to' guides, detailing functions/methods, and a range of sounds, some familiar, some less so, containing a patch sheet at the end, with notes below, to show you how to construct it for yourself.

00:00 Intro
00:29 Performance Example & Overview
02:22 Assembling the patch
03:14 Importance of envelope
03:42 Delayed LFO/Vibrato
05:25 Adding Glide
06:12 Adding Noise
06:56 Mod wheel control of LFO
07:36 Noise as Filter Mod source
08:16 Patch Diagram

Patch Notes:
Green dots show approximate pot and switch positions. Pots and switches that do not have green dots are not used in this patch, and should be left at their zero or off positions.
This is based on the version in the video with noise mixed in as audio, and glide applied to the keyboard CV. For variations without noise or glide, and usage with a mod controller, see the appropriate part of the video (check Index). Only a couple of connections need to be changed for these purposes.
V-Scale: Used here as a simple multiple, but since it's handling Gate signals any passive multiple could be used.
DH-ADSR: Another Contour Generators could be used instead, but the advantage with the DH-ADSR is independent control of both Decay and Release, meaning greater control. It serves as a great companion to the Contour Generators for this reason.
Dual LFO: The Tap Tempo VC-LFO module could also be used here in the same way, as it also has a built-in VCA (level control).
Ladder Filter: The Gemini 2412 would also work well here, it's tracking in self-oscillation is actually better overall. It would just need to have high resonance/self-oscillation enabled by the rear jumpers (see online manual or video user guide). The Ladder Filter struggles to track at lower frequencies, this is an authentic characteristic of the original Minimoog filter, but it's fine for the pitch/note ranges used in this video. The Sonic XV will also self-oscillate, but it's ability to track 1V/Oct is not as tight as the Gemini.
Modules used from left to right: Glide + Noise (Mk I or Mk II), V-Scale, DH-ADSR Envelope, Dual LFO + VCA, Contour Generators, Transistor Ladder Filter, Discrete Cascaded VCA."

Korg Mono/Poly Analog Synthesizer SN 373493

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"A cool analog monophonic/polyphonic from Korg. It has 4 VCO's which can be shared in 4-voice Polyphonic mode, or linked in Unison for a versatile monophonic lead. Each VCO has its own level, tune, and waveform type control. Waveforms include triangle, sawtooth, variable pulse wave. It has a great VCF (filter) section as well as 2 envelope generators (one for the oscillators and one for the filter). There are also 2 individual LFO's which can be used to modulate the Pulse Width, envelope and Arpeggiator independently.

A very flexible and fun synth. Other cool tricks up its sleeve include chord memory and an effects mode in which oscillators have a variety of ways to be synced. The built-in arpeggiator and sequencer can run all 4 VCO's at a time or cycle through each voice per note! There's also portamento, CV/Gate, VCF and VCO mod inputs, white noise generator, and the pitch/mod wheels can be assigned to control LFO, pitch or the filter. Its sound quality is nice and very Korg. This synth is used by Hardfloor, Tangerine Dream, The Orb, 808 State, Juno Reactor, Megaton Matt Haines, Freddy Fresh, and the Chemical Brothers.

This unit has been used on countless records by bands like Deerhunter, The Kaiser Chiefs, The Magic Gang, The Big Moon, Childhood and many many others! Used and maintained in a smoke-free studio. I’m happy to ship to the Continental USA or offer local pickup. Any other location please reach out to discuss terms.

Keyboard Bed may need some servicing, same as the wheels on the left but apart from that, its in really great shape! Sounds fantastic!"
