Tiptop Audio Buchla 200t Sound Demo

video upload by Station 252

"Buchla and Tiptop Audio 200t series workout.

Exploring Dual Oscillator Model 258t and Quad Function Generator Model 281t sound capabilities while recording my new EP. I was curious how the sound and response of those two modules will fit into my music and at the same time going into territories I wouldn't normally go to out of curiosity.

I've used a bunch of additional modules as my patches grew to hear how 200t modules fit with other eurorack modules and to keep everything in context, those where:

"Tiptop Audio was founded in 2009 when Gur Milstein started building his first electronic musical instruments in his laboratory in Hollywood, California.

His creations became popular immediately and the demand for the modular synthesizers produced by Tiptop Audio grew rapidly.

Today, in just over six years, many members of the international community of composers and electronic musicians create their own sounds and shape their own work by using Tiptop Audio’s equipment. In 2015, Tiptop Audio took a further step in its influential presence with the birth of Tiptop Audio Records. The label produces analog music manufactured from modular synthesizers with a dance-oriented vocation.

Tiptop Audio Records
The creation of the label consolidates a path that connects its instruments with the best electronic music composers of the moment. All projects that fit within the label are the result of direct experimentation of modules. The connection between the components creates sounds that are unique and unrepeatable.

'The modular synthesizer represents the possibility to build your own sound from a basic wave, up to the most complex chain of elements. The sound is alive. The sequence of loops are never identical as the approach to the machine is physical. Connections are visible and not obscured by a display. The user is preset free and is able to construct an original patch everytime.' Piero Fragola A&R Tiptop Audio Records

TTAR V.A. 002 (2016)
With: Matt Lange, Angle, Joao Ceser, Markus Fix, Black Shape, Drumcell & Luis Flores, Hubot, Florian Meindl, John Tejada, Scanner, M.O.T., Riemann.

The second issue of Tiptop Audio Records attests to the label’s attitude towards developing a nuanced sound set to become a standard for production. The line-up for Tiptop Records includes big names of a scene now described as ‘Modular Techno’, which consists of a fast growing group of artists interested in expanding their compositional techniques through modular synthesizer systems.

The vinyl format is a testimony to the label’s dedication to produce music in a physical form. The result is a four side, double LP packaged in original artwork (including a special poster) by Italian artist Matteo Giampaglia, with handmade lettering by Caterina Scardillo. It is an invitation to a territory of oscillations, and a trip of 10 (+ 2 extra digital) tracks that reconsiders the concept of sound design applied to electronic club music.

The teaser video samples the vibes of the new issue's inherent contagion. Videos for the individual tracks are set to follow by a fresh roster of new talent.

TIPTOP AUDIO RECORDS V.A. 2016

A side: Matt Lange - Qvcamx/ Angle - Time portraits
The first groove introduces Matt Lange’s track, an American producer who has joined up with DeadMau5 on Mau5trap. This intense 8 minute track is sustained by an immersion of rhythm full of atmosphere.
The Angle project is known for the development of audio-video combinations in their performance. They produced a club track rich in melodic sequences, perfectly balanced in a nonlinear fashion.

B side: Joao Ceser - System Failure/ Markus Fix - Texter
Joao Ceser is presently one of the leading figures in Italy of modular techno. His track, System Failure, builds an inevitable dance floor trap from which you can not escape.
The following track is Texter by Markus Fix of Sven Vath’s Cocoon. It takes us into a nocturnal atmosphere, reminiscent of ‘Blade Runner’.

C side: Black Shape - Doom Room/ Drumcell & Luis Flores - Submission of Thought/ Hubot - Riz 7
Black Shape makes its debut on Tiptop Audio Records with a track with an acid bass line featuring the dobro guitar played by Fabrizio Canale and vocals by Piero Fragola. The track exemplifies the theme and intentions of this project.

Drumcell (of Chris Liebing’s CLR) and Luis Flores pump out a distorted sound with an industrial flavour that drastically changes the atmosphere to a state of ecstatic proportions. Hubot takes us back to a club vibe with a groovy yet dark sound driven by a relentless sequence of beats.

D side: Florian Meindl - Operating Temperature/ John Tejada - Fourier Tranform/ Scanner - Valbor
Florian Meindl opens the last side of the release with a fast-paced rhythm and a syncopated sound texture defined by harmonic sequences.

John Tejada (artist of Germany’s Kompakt Records) turns the table with a melodic mind trip, keeping in focus the weaving of sounds and the bass line.
Lastly, Scanner closes the compilation with an avant-garde orchestration, endorsing the ambition of the label to seek new sonic territory.

The issue also includes 2 extra digital tracks:
M.O.T - Look inside/ Riemann - Riemann LIVE -1"

Buchla & Tiptop Audio - Series 200

video upload by Tiptop .Audio

"The Buchla analog modular synthesizer has been around since the early 1970s yet very few people ever had a chance to play one or even to see one in person. Buchla and Tiptop Audio have joined forces to resume the production of these wonderful rare pieces of gear."

SUPERBOOTH 2021 - TipTop Audio/Buchla Eurorack 200 Series
video upload by sonicstate

Update: press release followed by pics:

Planet Earth, Solar System September 2021

Buchla Announces collaboration with Tiptop Audio on Eurorack versions of classic 200 series modules.

Buchla has chosen to partner with Gur Milstein and his Tiptop Audio team to lead a reissue of Don Buchla’s legendary 200 Series modular synthesizer system in Eurorack format. The two companies have been working together closely on bringing Don’s 70’s synthesizer modules back to life while making the previously rare circuits affordable and accessible to the current generation of musicians and artists.

Eric Fox the CEO and co-owner of Buchla says “When the opportunity presented itself to work with such a reputable company as Tiptop Audio to help reimagine the original 200 series in a new form factor, I jumped at the chance. I knew they had the talent and infrastructure to bring eurorack users for the first time ever an official and genuine sense of the classic Buchla experience at a price anyone could afford. Gur’s enthusiasm and passion towards these designs is very infectious and clearly points to a long and creative partnership for years to come.”

Gur Milstein the head designer and CEO of Tiptop Audio states: “ I’m excited about the collaboration with Buchla. Working with Eric, Joel and the rest of their team gives us additional access to original documents and knowhow that Don shared with his close colleagues who worked with him in the 70s and recent years before he passed away. These designs require a full understanding of the how and why the circuits should work in order to reach that specific sound and workflow. My team and I are excited to bring Don’s work from those early days of synthesis back to life knowing we are doing it as accurately as it can be done. Our goal is to recreate as much of the original 200 series as possible and have the full line available through our dealer network with the full customer support Tiptop has built for over a decade.”

The modules will be branded as Buchla & Tiptop Audio, and the series will be called the 200t. Information and prices on each module will become available close to their release dates.

*The corona pandemic is causing severe damage to the supply of electronic parts and is currently delaying parts for the project. However, the current timeline is for the first set of modules to be available by the end of 2021.

New Tiptop Audio - VCA

Tiptop Audio - VCA from Tiptop Audio on Vimeo.

via Tiptop Audio

"The Tiptop Audio VCA is a full featured, precision calibrated, analog Voltage Controlled Amplifier. At its heart is a novel design of a control circuitry—a function that lets you sweep continuously through three different response curves: Logarithmic, Linear, Exponential—giving you all three shapes in a single module. This special control circuitry design by Mr. Osamu Hoshuyama was adopted into the VCA module to make it a great sounding synthesizer VCA with flexibility to address all duties: level control for both audio and CV modulation, gating audio into silence, and amplitude modulation effects.

A VCA, Voltage Controlled Amplifier, sometimes referred to as an audio gate, is an essential module to any Eurorack and no system is complete without one. The concept is an input, an output and a control that sets how much of the input signal passes through to the output.

A great VCA means minimum feedthrough of the control signal bleeding into the passing signal and minimum distortion applied to the passing signal. An excellent audio gate means minimal leakage of signal from IN to OUT when the control tells the VCA to fully close. These are the most critical conditions for a good sounding, good responding VCA and are what the Tiptop Audio design carefully addresses. 2 LED peak indicator lights on the front panel light up with incoming CV or audio signals. While a clipping indicator for audio is expected, clipping of CV is often overlooked and it’s included here to visually maintain the full dynamic range of an envelope driving the VCA.

The Tiptop Audio VCA lets you concentrate on creative uses rather than figuring out the module’s anomalies. The result is an excellent sounding synthesizer VCA that’s a joy to use and pleasing to hear."

A COLLECTION OF EURORACK MODULAR JAMS ~ Make Noise, TipTop Audio, Mutable Instruments, OTO Machines

Published on Jun 28, 2017 once upon a synth

"Jamming and improvising on my eurorack modular synth. There are few different jams in this one. I ran the whole thing through an OTO Machines BAM for delicious reverb. The main sound sources are the TipTop Z3000 and One. I then feed those through the 2040 and VCF-74 filters. The Z3000 is also run through the Fold Processor. The main sequencer is the Z8000 which is first quantized with the Quantizer before being fed to control the Z3000. The Make Noise Tempi is driving the Z8000 and the Z4000 envelope generator which is turn is modulating the Z2040. The Make Noise Maths also helps to modulate the Fold Processor parameters. The drums and percussion sounds are a combination of the Peaks in drum mode and the One sampler.

Tiptop Audio's Z8000 Gets a New Look and Output Range Adjustment

TIPTOP AUDIO Z8000 MATRIX SEQUENCER from Tiptop Audio on Vimeo.

Tiptop Audio: Z8000 Basic Patches from Tiptop Audio on Vimeo.

Update: videos above added.

via Tiptop Audio

"The Z8000 Matrix Sequencer is a modulation source like no other: The 16 knobs of the Z8000 are accessed by ten sequencers with their own clock, direction and reset inputs. The ten sequencers are as follows:

Four 4 step CV sequencers on the horizontal.
Four 4 step CV sequencers on the vertical.
One 16 step CV sequencer on the horizontal.
One 16 step CV sequencer on the vertical.

The Z8000 can simultaneously modulate up to 10 CV parameters poly-rhythmically, with unprecedented motion complexity. One knob affects all 10 CV outputs! Imagine modifying 10 parameters from one knob. With it’s 30 gate and clock inputs and 10 CV outputs one can only imagine the possibilities, and all clock inputs can even be driven at audio rates. The Z8000 pairs well with the Trigger Riot and Circadian Rhythms and using it with the QuantiZer extends its capabilities as a high precision 1V/Oct note sequencer.

Introduced in 2017, a new version of the Z8000 maintains the original circuitry but adds output range adjustment switches on the back and Tiptop’s new colored look which help highlight the sections."

Tiptop Audio Launches New Record Label - Tiptop Audio Records

Tiptop Records presents Various Artists 001 - Official Teaser from Tiptop Film on Vimeo.

http://www.tiptoprec.com
http://www.tiptopaudio.com

"Tiptop Audio is proud to introduce a new project for 2015: Tiptop Audio Records.
In the recent years musical productions have seen a remarkable return to the use of hardware through analog synthesizers and digital control interfaces. This trend has proven so strong that it prompted a rebirth of modular synths in a new format (eurorack). Tiptop Audio has made a name producing sophisticated but easy to use modules, designed to form a complete system that is especially effective for dance-oriented productions and live sets.

Tiptop Audio Records selected for its first issue some of the most groundbreaking artists using such systems, to present a range of artists who, through their tracks, explore the landscape of dance music in a very fresh perspective. These are the artists who inspire the Tiptop team to make more innovative devices, which in turn make new music (a nice feedback loop).

ANGLE, BLAWAN, CHRISTIAN BURKHARDT JOAO CESER, JOHN TEJADA, JOSEPH FRAIOLI, MOE ESPINOSA (DRUMCELL), KINK, RICHARD DEVINE and SURGEON each contribute a track stamped with their own style and vision. Tracks range from Surgeon’s trademark hard minimal beat, to Kink’s gauzy dreamscape, while Richard Devine and Joseph Fraioli explore the outer reaches of beat based music. The Phase VI team (John Tejada and Moe Espinosa AKA Drumcell) produces an endlessly shifting set of percolating rhythms, Christian Burkhardt and Joao Ceser put some 21st century twists on classic dance floor patterns, ANGLE lay down effortless, sophisticated Continental style and Blawan adds some industrial toned menace.

The release will initially come as a double vinyl edition, with a cover painted by the artist Matteo Giampaglia, and a digital download version will follow.
An original video teaser will introduce the compilation, then other videoclips of the individual tracks will be realized by exciting new visual artists."

Tiptop Audio: Z2040 LP-VCF Gets a New Look

Tiptop Audio: Z2040 LP-VCF from Tiptop Audio on Vimeo.

"Tiptop Audio: Z2040 LP-VCF (4-Pole Voltage Controlled Filter)

http://www.tiptopaudio.com

Music by ANGLE

http://www.angleproject.net

The Z2040 is our redesign of the most famous analog filter from the poly synths of the 80’s and features Tiptop Audio’s signature lush, big and creamy sound. Its frequency sweeps make thick bass lines and leads with great dynamics.

When modulated with audio frequencies through its various inputs, the Z2040 gets quite colorful and is capable of creating so many new sounds and textures as the forces of the incoming waves and their harmonics all blend through the filter’s non linear circuit.

When set with Resonance feedback fully up, the Z2040 transforms into a pure sine-core VC-Oscillator, great for making snappy percussive elements and whistling sounds.

A look under the hood will find that the heart of the Z2040 is a discrete design 4-Pole Low Pass filter with a similar core to that of the SSM2040 Filter chip used in the 80’s Prophet 5 Rev 2 synthesizer, and its brother the SSM2044 used in the famous early EMU samplers and PPG synthesizers of the 80’s. Both filters are considered by many as 'the best sounding filter ever.'

The Z2040’s four modulation inputs are built to handle CV and audio signals, enabling deep modulation of the filter core and passing signals.

A VC resonance input is provided to modulate and even clip the sine wave produced by the filter feedback loop.

A Frequency Modulation input (FM) provides dynamic filter sweeps and the unique VC-FM index allows modulation of the incoming FM signals.

On top of that, the Z2040 comes with an audio VCA that can be configured to act upon the input or the output of the filter."

Tiptop Audio TG ONE Special Edition: Throbbing Gristle Commemorate Eurorack Module

via Tiptop Audio

"TG ONE is a special edition of the Tiptop Audio ONE module designed to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Throbbing Gristle’s groundbreaking ‘Second Annual Report’. Few bands have staked out such on original space in music that proved not only immediately provocative and illuminating, but filtered into almost every corner of electronic and popular music in the succeeding decades.

Collaborating with the band and MUTE records, the Tiptop Audio team tailored the features of the popular ONE to the sound and aesthetic of Throbbing Gristle.

Decked out in a TG color scheme of red and white on black, the design incorporates the iconic TG ‘flash’. Even the packaging sports classic cover art from ’20 Jazz Funk Greats’.

Working with long time beta-tester Chris Carter, the Tiptop R&D tweaked the ONE firmware creating two new modes: the first a random file selection on each trigger input; and the second, looping playback that randomly seeks in a sound file with each trigger. Both of these functions take TG ONE into new sonic territory.

TG ONE includes two exclusive cards of Throbbing Gristle samples curated by Chris Carter from his archive of the original Throbbing Gristle recording sessions. The files have been further reworked and revised, modified and mangled by Carter to give the user a unique Throbbing Gristle sonic palette to work wonders with while retaining the spirit of the original sources. Card one consists of 128 percussive sounds and audio snippets with the second card featuring 128 longer samples, pads and loops.
Tightly coupled with the firmware these cards are only available with the TG module.

Tiptop Audio would like to thank Paul Taylor, Daniel Miller and all at Mute for their support; and Chris Carter, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge and the late Peter ‘Sleazy’ Christopherson for their inspiration."

NEW TIPTOP AUDIO - Z-DSP VC Digital Signal Processor (24 bit/variable clock) Details

TIPTOP AUDIO - Z-DSP from Tiptop Audio on Vimeo.

via Tiptop Audio

'Tiptop Audio’s Z-DSP is a cartridge-based open source digital sound processing and effects generating platform for your modular synthesizer. Lush audio processing, greater stereo depth and a unique set of digital synthesis is what the Z-DSP is all about.

The Z-DSP has a stereo digital sound processor with 24-bit sampling, 15kHz of bandwidth, voltage-controlled parameters of stereo feedback, program switching, DSP parameters, equal power crossfading dry/wet mixing, as well as sequential program control switching and a clear display – all in Eurorack format. A dedicated clocking input for the DSP chip does wonders to passing sound by bending the algorithms in an unexpected way, a hardware technique computer plugins can’t do and is unique to the Z-DSP.

In a recent update, the Z-DSP (NS) got an all new design of its analog circuitry, contributing to a lower noise signal path, clearer sound of the entire frequency range, lower distortion and better immunity to noise emitted by other modules sharing the same power supply. A new analog dry/wet circuit has been implemented to remove the 3db gain drop when the mix knob passes through the center of the dial making the use of this function more practical in a live application. A reverse polarity protection has been added as well. The new front-panel matches Tiptop’s colorful design, and a single printed circuit board and surface mount technology improve reliability during production and use. The powerful Z-DSP engine remains the same as the original Z-DSP module and all cards are compatible across both versions."
