Relive the '90s with the Roland JD800: Factory Presets

video upload by Andy Whitmore

"Roland JD-800 - ALL FACTORY PRESETS

The Roland JD-800 is a digital synthesizer that was manufactured between 1991 and 1996. It features many knobs and sliders for patch editing and performance control — features that some manufacturers, including Roland, had been omitting in the name of streamlining since the inception of the Yamaha DX7. The JD-800 thus became very popular with musicians who wished to take a hands-on approach to patch programming. The introduction in the manual states that Roland's intention with the JD-800 was to "return to the roots of synthesis".

Technology
The JD-800 employs Linear Arithmetic synthesis (introduced and made famous by the Roland D-50), which combines sample playback with digital synthesis. The JD-800 has 108 built-in waveforms, which can be expanded via PCM cards. The waveforms span a variety of categories such as analog synthesizers, acoustic instruments, and voices. Many of these waveforms are very short and are used primarily for the attack portion of a sound, while longer ones are used for the sustained part of a sound. The JD-800 was Roland's first instrument to have its core presets developed entirely in the United States, under a short-lived branch of its R&D-LA office in Culver City, California. The core sampled waveforms and factory presets of the JD-800 were created by Eric Persing.

A patch, or single sound, in the JD-800 consists of up to four tones. As every tone consists of an almost completely independent synthesizer voice, a patch could be considered a combination of up to four different synthesizers. In Single mode the JD-800 plays one patch at a time, but in Multi mode it is possible to play five different patches over MIDI, plus a "special" patch. The special patch has different waveforms assigned to the 61 different keys on the keyboard, so is used for drums and percussion sounds. The JD-800 has one effects section. In Single mode, seven effects can be used simultaneously, in series, so all tones in a patch go through the same effects. In Multi mode, three effects can be used at the same time, with all patches sharing the same effects, though any of the patches can be routed to bypass the effects.

TOP 10 Iconic Synth Sounds (that ruled the world)

video upload by Espen Kraft

"In this video I present a list of my top 10 iconic synth sounds. Sounds that ruled the world in terms of chart hits. Sounds are coming from synths as Yamaha DX7, Roland Jupiter-8 and Juno-106, some sampler sounds from the Fairlight and Emulator 2 and Korg M1, D-50 and many more.

In the case of the 'synth brass', lots of other analog synths were used for different songs and hits, like the Oberheim OB-Xa, Elka Synthex, Prophet 5 and more. The same for the 'sync' sound.

External reverb, delay and chorus were used on some of the sounds. All sounds has been mixed and processed in various way to sound good. All the sounds are coming from the gear you see in the video. No softs or VST synths were used.
Two added bonus famous sounds in the video, one in the very beginning and one at the end. First is a variation of the infamous "Orch5" sample from the Fairlight, while the other is from the D-50.

Here are the links to (most) of the songs referenced in the video:

Mr. Akiro Kamio as a prefix of "Dream Jam Session" explains the outline of synthesizer operation mainly with YAMAHA CS-10. In the late 1970s when this broadcast was in the late 70's, synthesizers with tone color programming function were not common, so in order to study the sound making of synthesizers, to the reference books on the market or promotional materials of musical instrument manufacturers While looking at the set chart of the knob that is being posted it was a standard to follow the steps of making the sound of the waves, making the sound of the wind, making the sound of the steam locomotive ... matching the position of the knob."

"Enter Space!" says Sinclair Spectrum ZX through its Currah uSpeech synthesizer. The Atari STE and its Yamaha YM2149F chip in all its square wave glory does exactly that. The tools used to control the STE are NSQ (Near Synthesizer Quality), Chip Synth and MaxYMiser.

The powerful beats are coming from NI Massive except for the Hi-hats and noise bursts which are also Atari STE. As usual external reverb and delay are added. Hope you enjoy it!

Drum Box: Boss DR-110 & Yamaha MR-10 Video Demos

Drum Box: Boss DR-110
Published on Sep 21, 2013 my4trackmachine·113 videos

"The last analog Roland drum machine, the DR-110 came about midway through the rise of the digital sample machines era. While it sported a readable screen and was easy to edit, it lacked the "authentic" sound quality of its digital brothers making it not very popular. Compared to the rest of the TR-X0Xs it has a thin whimpy kick without an accent. The snare did have some snap to it though. Today it stands as a decent alternate to its often compared 606."

Drum Box: Yamaha MR-10
Published on Sep 21, 2013

"The only analog drum machine to come from Yamaha, the MR-10 was a limited preset machine with a solid kick and tunable snares and toms. The presets are a pretty standard affair but where the MR-10 shines best is its playable plastic pads. Armed with a solid kick and fairly unique analog sound it is a largely over looked machine. Even though it is limited it is still quite playable. If you want to step away from the popular and familiar analog sounds of Roland then give a listen to this underrated machine."

Drum Box: Roland TR-606
Published on Sep 21, 2013

"Before the 808 and 909 there was the 606. A capable analog little drum machine with a great sound. Though now over shadowed by other machines with more editing and routing options, the TR-606 holds its own because of its strong sound design and easy programability."

"Cheeky little Semi-Analog Drum Machine from the 1980's.

This was an old project from some time back. I was always planning on re-housing it, but never quite got around to it...

I've added trigger inputs, Metal Touch-Points, some new knobs to alter Pitch & decay. Also added some switches above the Rhythm Buttons to combine the presets together and create new mutant patterns.

There's also a Ring-Modulator Switch & Gold Knob for Pitch Modulation & Weirdness."

Yamaha MR-10 Analog Drum Machine

YouTube via peglegjoe857
"MR-10 in action. It is a cool little machine. It is kinda similar sounding to the Roland TR-606 and the Korg KPR-77, but it is not programmable so it has gone pretty unnoticed. It is also somewhat like the early rhythm machines, the CR-68 and 78, TR-66, The Minipops, KR-55, except that it has pads for manually playing it! This makes me think it would make a prime candidate for a mod, adding triggers at it's pads. Probably an easy mod, but I never got around to doing it. I actually think it sounds a bit better than the KPR-77. I have the boss DR-110 as well, which is in the same class as these machines, just missing the toms. Anywho, the MR-10 is nifty sounding and analog. A few neat controls. Small, simple, and pretty cool."
