Chord Progressions Made Easy | Midicake ARP

video upload by midicake

"Chord Progressions Made Easy with Midicake ARP Ⓜ️🆔ℹ️🍰

I've been wanting to do something more orchestral for a while and this is it. Experimenting with chord progressions on ARP is so easy. Whether you have music theory knowledge or not, ARP gives you fast access to thousands of chords and the freedom to explore what works best for your compositions.

This was made with various sample pack sounds, while ARP provided the arrangement with just a few parameter tweaks."

Uptempo jam with Midicake ARP, Dreadbox Nymphes, Moog Minitaur, Mother 32, MSW-810, DrumBrute Impact

video upload by Jay Hosking

"A live synthesizer jam performed entirely on hardware.

I've had this chord progression kicking around for a little while, the product of a voice-leading exercise I was doing. I was super happy with it but never able to incorporate it into a larger arrangement. Recently, I realized I could just run the chord progression through the Midicake ARP and get some inspiration on the song arrangement, and sure enough, that was all it took (along with a few amazing synthesizers and effects). Really happy with where this one ended up.

Full disclosure: I cut and paste a previous drum fill to the outro drum fill, because I felt the outro drum fill didn't match the quality of the earlier one. Seemed a more judicious approach than recording the whole thing again.

Thanks for listening.

Dirtywave M8 - chord progression sequence
Midicake ARP - four-part sequencing arranger for the chord progression
Kenton MIDI Thru - MIDI Thru out to five devices
DrumBrute Impact through Empress EchoSystem - Drums
Moog Mother 32 through Kinotone Ribbons - Slower mono synth
Michigan Synth Works MSW-810 through Hologram Chroma Console - Faster mono synth
Moog Minitaur through Boss DM-101 - Bass synth
Dreadbox Nymphes through Empress Reverb - Pad synth

Performed and recorded live (minus that small drum edit) to a multitrack recording, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

SEQTRAK and Midicake ARP Inspiring Creative New Ideas

video upload by midicake

"🎹 How do you combine the mechanics of creating melodies with the musical theory that guides and underpins good music, without years of learning and practice? 🎵

🎶Yamaha's Seqtrak is a battery-powered groove box, synthesizer and sampler touted as the Ultimate Music creation station. It has great sounds and some very neat tricks. However, I have 3 big issues, not just with Seqtrak but with step-sequencer groove boxes in general. 🎧

In this video, I'll go through my issues and how to solve them by plugging in a Melody Designer like Midicake ARP. I'll show you how to get more from your Step Sequencer and how powerful sequence generators can inspire new musical ideas with amazing ease.

All gear is better in black (replacing the Midicake Arp case)

video upload by Richard DeHove

"Why just make a quick guide on replacing the Midicake Arp's front panel when I can have an extended gripe about too-colorful gear? So here it is, all talk and no music about the joys of black front panels. For reasons unknown a jumble of gear colors disturbs me. Perhaps there's some deep explanation centring on light patterns, color contrast and their interaction with brainwave states? After all, why are some color groupings universally regarded as "beautiful" or "harmonious" - such as a sunset - and other combinations like brown and orange, or magenta and red, judged terrible? Either that or I'm just getting more grumpy and demanding. In the meantime, if anyone knows of a black overlay sticker for the Big Sky, I'm in.

Moog Mariana VST meets Midicake ARP. All the Moog!

video upload by midicake

"Imagine owning an infinite number of Moog Synths. What would you do?

I have very much enjoyed using the Moog Mariana the New Bass Synthesizer from Moog Music. I had to know if it sounded better than the emulations I had tried and, yes, I think it does.

Pairing it with Midicake ARP is a no-brainer. Basslines, Arpeggios, Thick Pads. There's a lot of low end and it sounds fantastic!

Hypnotic jam with Sequential Take 5, Midicake ARP, Dreadbox Nymphes, Roland SH-101, DrumBrute Impact

video upload by Jay Hosking

"Please support my work on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/jayhosking
A live, semi-improvised synthesizer jam performed entirely on hardware.

I'm lucky enough to have access to a new studio space, and am now in the process of moving over there. That means the days and nights have been long. One evening I was casually noodling on the Take 5 and came up with a patch and arpeggio I liked, but didn't feel I had time and capacity to do a full sequence and arrangement with other devices.

That's where the Midicake ARP comes in to save the day. Rather than sequence anything, I simply sent my MIDI data out of the Take 5 and into the ARP. The ARP then recontextualized the notes and can send them out to up to four other devices (here, I used three, plus MIDI clock to the DrumBrute Impact). Thanks to the ARP, I could explore chords and improvisation without having to write a single note in a sequencer. The ARP really is a great solution to a classic songwriting problem: being able to find the song with all the parts at once, rather than imagine all the parts and then write them.

From there, it was a matter of laying down some instruments and effects I liked the sound of. No surprises here, other than the Boss DM-101, which I got recently. It doesn't quite have the personality of the Matriarch delay, but it's a great and more versatile analog delay that I look forward to using more.

All in all, a really fun jam, and I was extremely grateful to have the tools I needed to write the song on the fly across multiple instruments.

Thanks for listening.

Sequential Take 5 - main arpeggio, MIDI controller/data out
Midicake ARP - "sequencer" (note recontextualizer? arpeggiator?)
Arturia DrumBrute Impact - drums
Dreadbox Nymphes through Strymon BigSky - arpeggio two
Blackout Model D through Boss DM-101 - bass synth
Roland SH-101 through Walrus Sloër - arpeggio three (the slow high one)
Kenton Pro-Solo Mk3 - MIDI to CV for SH-101
Kenton MIDI Thru - MIDI through to all devices

Performed and recorded live, with eq, compression, and limiting in the box.

Modulating Modulation with Midicake Arp

video upload by midicake

"ARP truly never ceases to amaze me. I'd been writing test code all day for the new timing Poly Meters feature. I'd written a test for layering multiple modulations of the same parameter and it struck me that I'd never done much with modulating the FX Amount. Essentially, modulating modulations. Doing so makes for a virtually unlimited range of patterns. :)"

Create multitrack synth patterns in the LXR-02. Demo and tutorial

video upload by Richard DeHove

"Last time we looked at programming synth sounds on the LXR. This time we take a synth-heavy custom kit of four synth sounds and two drum sounds and team it up with the Midicake Arp. The Arp plays the four synth channels. Later we feed all four synths tracks into the LXR in one pass over 64 steps. While the Midicake is ideal for this you could use any sequencer or arp that can satisfy a few basic requirements: It needs to be able to send note information on different MIDI channels and be able to act as the Midi clock master - pretty basic powers. One tiny caution if you're going to use a Keystep-37: When you press the stop button for the arp or sequencer it sends a value '0' on Midi CC51 - which also happens to be the Midi command on the LXR for amp envelope decay on voice 1.

Feeding pattern data into the LXR is a good idea imo given how many options there are on the Midicake. One of the strengths of the Midicake is that it constantly saves its state as you work so there's no need to ever actively save anything. The downside is that there's no saved version to revert to in case you wander off on some promising but ultimately unsuccessful adventure. The lesson is to copy your patch to a new slot as you go. Same holds for the LXR - I've lost many interesting sounds in furious twiddles or too-confident "save kit" actions that turned out to be 'load kit' instead. Stay organized. For my honoured Patreon friends the LXR kit used here is available for download.

The synth sounds on the LXR are really starting to grow on me. They're pretty harsh and digital but respond well to effects. They're also not like your standard synth sounds so you tend to end up in odd places. It makes a good partner for the Midicake. Another obvious partner-candidate would be the Roland 4D. Not a fan of the superb blandness of Roland sounds but spec-wise it seems like a perfect fit. I only have one criticism of the Midicake Arp: They're now made in black and I've got a white one :/

As usual there is absolutely no extra effects, EQ, compression or alteration of the sound other than what you see.

Multi Rhythmic Patches with Midicake ARP

video upload by midicake

"Using multiple arpeggios on different meters and sequence lengths can make for very interesting results.

In this video, I go through the parameter settings used to create a lazy but rhythmically complex patch. Its varying rhythms make the focal melody constantly shift between different arpeggios/instruments.

Let me know what you think in the comments."
