An Interview with Rick Wakeman on Astronauta Pinguim

Full interview on Astronauta Pinguim

"How many Minimoog model D synthesizers did you have during all your career and how many of those Minimoogs do you still have? Can you tell us a little bit about the history of your Minimoogs?

RICK - I don't know the exact answer, but I think I have probably owned about 20 Minimoogs in my lifetime. I currently have 9. Finding good ones is extremely difficult. I have a very good man who repairs them for me and keeps them in good order. I cannot even imagine not having one. I have bought them for many different countries, and one from Switzerland which amazingly I used to own back in the early seventies!"

Cheetah MS6 w/ Maad Upgrade

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Also included will be the original 8 page documentation regarding Cheetah MS6 Firmware Upgrade v1.3 By Kristofer Maad... Plus a 26 page printed manual with everything needed to know on how to operate synthesiser. The Maad os adds some wonderful features like, allowing you to control everything via CC messages from your sequencer. DAW or controller!

This is a Six voice polyphonic analogue synth that can be split up in to 6 multi timbral parts.
Made from the same voice Curtis chips as Oberheim Matrix 1000
2 Oscillators
2 Envelopes
Filter and an LFO per voice.
Oscillators have 6 waveforms, PWM and sync .
One of the few synths that responds to polyphonic after touch too.

The MS6 is a full-featured analog synth with 12 oscillators with PWM, noise and sync. There are 6 analog 24dB/oct filters which are warm and resonant! Programming from the front panel is possible but quite a bit tedious, so use of an editor is definitely recommended, such as Unisyn or the Knobby. The MS6 has been used by OMD and Rick Wakeman.

Towards the end of the eighties, the British company Cheetah released their finest, the MS6. It's a 6-voice polyphonic/multitimbral analog synthesizer in a single-unit rack module. It has two digitally controlled oscillators per voice (12 DCOs) to provide better stability, and they sound surprisingly warm and musical. It's got the same sound chips (CEM 3396) as the Oberheim Matrix 6/6R and Matrix 1000 but the MS6 is multitimbral! Get creative with layering patches for ensembles or Trance heaven! Hidden within this little unit are some wonderful string, bass, lead, voice and percussion sounds!"

"The keyboard has a Waldorf sound engine, with the controls set up like one of the great analog keyboards of the 70s. The sounds are phenomenal. It has some pre-programs reminiscent of Rick Wakeman's mini-moog sounds, Jon Lord's (RIP) distorted hammond organ, the Arp Odyssey, and all kinds of other cool stuff..."

Korg Sigma Mono Synth with MIDI Retrofit

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"It has 2VCO's and 3 sections, SYNTHE / INSTRUMENT / EFFECTS (all mixable). Its also got the following although not implemented as standard synths. Random and noise generation, PWM, vibrato, ring modulation, some VCF, LPF, HPF control etc etc etc. Put it this way you'll never run out of possibilities. The bad new is, as with most synths of this era it's got its faults but these are minor. Anyhow here's a list of known problems:

1. One of the keys has been cracked (pic3) but doesn't detract from playing.

2. Both joystick stalks have been broken (a common fault) but replaced years back (pic2) with bespoke plastic ones. These still work and look great.

3. Pots on the performance section (pic2) need either cleaned ot replaced, Yes they crackle when turned but that's easily sorted perhaps with a bit of contact cleaner. Switches are a bit hard to move, probably worn out with over 30 years of use. This has to be expected though so please keep that in mind.

However, there's lots of good news. It's cosmetically in very very good condition, fully intact with some minor small scratches and still has its pull out music rest . I played it before advertising and it sounds fine. But best of all it has a MIDI retrofit installed (many years ago). This has pretty basic midi implimentation whereby you press a little button on the fascia and the channels go through 1-16. I have no way of testing it but know it worked because I used it in midi setup (many moons ago). It also has midi independent tuning, again by a little pot just under the fascia (access hole). You can see them on pic2 just below the gold legend. There's no midi sysex here mind you, just note on/off data accepted. It also has your usual Hz / Volts connectors so midi converters could be used although I've never tried.

Anyone familiar with these machines will know how good they are. Users include Rick Wakeman, Keith Emerson and Jean Michael Jarre, all great musicians of the time but you can still see these machines in action on youtube. I've owned it for a considerable amount of time (with a Korg Lambda ES-50) but with the passage of time means I'm never gonna use it again. Since there are plenty of musicians & collectors out there who would and the inclusion of a midi retrofit must make it extremely rare and desirable.

SYNTH EVOLUTION - Illustrations of Classic Synthesizers

"SYNTH EVOLUTION is a new business specialising in illustrations of classic synthesizers, from the earliest Moog and Buchla systems of the early 1960s, right up to the introduction of the first analogue modelling synths of the early 1990s.

Every synth manufactured during that time has been covered - from the big names of Moog, Roland and Yamaha to the more esoteric products from RMI, Wersi and Powertran. Between them, all these synthesizers - and more importantly, the musicians who use them, have transformed music of the last 50 years bringing previously undreamt of sounds and styles to musical culture.

The first range of products from SYNTH EVOLUTION are stylish white ceramic mugs emblazoned with illustrations of these mighty instruments. There is a selection to browse from on the website, but any synth from a list of over 270 can be requested!

Note that currently only synthesizers are available - drum machines, samplers and more recent instruments are in the pipeline, as are other products.

Delivery worldwide.

The Moog Modular Synthesizer 3C (1967) was one of Robert Moog's earliest instruments and formed the basis of what was to become the world's largest modular synthesizer 'TONTO'. Created by Malcolm Cecil, 'The Original New Timbral Orchestra’ eventually comprised two Moog Modular 3C's as well as many other modules from other manufacturers.

Arp 2600 (1971)

The Arp 2600 was created in 1971 by Alan R. Pearlman and has been a classic ever since. Notable users are too numerous to list in full, but include Stevie Wonder, Jean-Michel Jarre, Orbital, Rick Wakeman and Nine Inch Nails. It was also used to create R2D2's bleeps and bloops in Star Wars.

Yamaha CS-80 (1977)

Buy now

The polyphonic Yamaha CS-80 is synonymous with the lush chord sound of Vangelos - such as the opening sequence of Bladerunner.

Released in 1977, it's eight note polyphony was a revelation, but it's 90kg weight meant some serious weight training was required to own one.

Con Brio ADS 200 (1980)

Buy now

The Con Brio Advanced Digital Synthesizer (ADS) 200 was an extraordinary synthesizer released in 1980 costing over $20,000. Based on additive synthesis, FM, phase modulation and some other esoteric sound generation methods it had 64 note polyphony and 16 oscillators per note.

Quite a beast, and a splendid looking one too - perfect for a retro-futuristic mug of tea!

Moog Model 15 BASICS & CLASSICS: 64 free synth patches by Fabio Ribeiro

Published on Jul 3, 2016 Marcus Padrini
Update: video renamed to Moog Model 15 BASICS & CLASSICS: 100 free synth patches by Fabio Ribeiro

iTunes: Model 15 - Moog Music Inc.

"The brazilian keyboard player, musical producer and sound synthesis instructor Fabio Ribeiro (Remove Silence) created the BASICS & CLASSICS collection, bringing 64 patches for the Moog Model 15 app for iPad and iPhone.

This free collection presents classic and famous synth sounds created using only the original features of the classic Moog Model 15 analog modular synth, without the new features of the app or delay.

In addition to demonstrating the versatility of the original synthesizer, the purpose of these patches, mostly, is didactic, illustrating how sounds of different classes can be created through subtractive synthesis in a modular synthesizer. Also included are some classic patches from keyboard players and bands like Rick Wakeman, Yes, Triumvirat, Rush, OMD, The Prodigy, Camel, Uriah Heep, etc.

Mellotron inside

YouTube via btpro. Audio comes it at 1:21.
"Mellotron is an ancient sampler. It records a sound in analog tape without using the computer technology.

Mellotron was used a lot in progressive rock.

One tape recorder supports each keyboard. This tape recorder is only for playback, and the recording is not possible.

There are three trucks in each tape, and each truck can play a sound recorded beforehand. A violin section, a solo flute, a solo cello are recorded in normal tape.

There is one motor in the main body bottom and turns the big pulley which there is in the main body right with a belt. A long capstan sticks to a pulley. This capstan always turns under tape when switched on.

A pressure pad and a rubber pinch roller are installed under the keyboard. When a key is pressed, a pinch roller holds the tape to a capstan, and tape begins to work.

A pressure pad pushes tape to the playback head at the same time, and a recorded sound is played.

The tape is over from a start in 7-8 seconds. Therefore, the sound stops suddenly on the way. A spring sticks to each tape, and the tape is rewound at the top position by about 0.5 seconds when release a key.

When you want to change a sound recorded in tape, you move the position of the head in right and left with a truck selector.

A famous performance :
King Crimson, Yes(Rick Wakeman), Herbie Hancock, Moody Blues"
