"We were able to chat with the sound designer behind many of u-he's patches across their instrument range. Howard Scarr is well known for his sound design and patch work being hired by Hans Zimmer for The Dark Knight. Viktor Weimer has been creating patches for the u-he range for some years, and Urs Heckmann of course is where the company takes its name and is the chief architect of their range.

The patches were created in Hive 2.1 -the .1 being after Urs added some extra features to Hive to allow for more creative sound design. Specifically in the filter types plus a few other features.

u-he features with Martin Eyerer

"Thirty years into his career and Martin Eyerer is not content to sit still. When talking with him, one gets the sense of the passion for his music and work that still drives him. This passion for electronic music ignited during the late 80s on a trip to Ibiza where he heard UK house for the first time. After that he didn't look back.

Now with over two hundred releases, an international DJ career, a successful record label and co-owner of Riverside Studios, Martin looks for what is next.

We talked to Martin (in between his busy schedule) at his riverside studio in Berlin about his work, synthesizers, studio and life.

In this video I'm using Percussa's wireless AudioCubes change the cable patching of the U-HE ACE virtual analog synthesizer on-the-fly with no mouse. The U-HE ACE synthesizer allows you to use MIDI CCs to map the source for any cable. Percussa MIDIBridge 3 for Wireless AudioCubes has a new "Topology" mode that allows you to send MIDI note trigger information as well as distance data (MIDI CCs) at the same time for up to 16 cubes simultaneously! This video shows some of my early tests and ideas for leveraging these features by pairing AudioCubes with ACE. Of course these are baby steps for what is possible and these same techniques could be applied to other instruments - and even hardware instruments via MIDI or MIDI-to-CV.

NAMM 2023 U-he Filterscape Bundle First Look

"At NAMM 2023, Sonic State caught up with Urs Heckmann, founder of U-he, to discuss the new FilterScape plugin. Although an older plugin, U-he has updated it to give it a whole new breath of life. FilterScape is a form band EQ with eight snapshots where each snapshot can have a different EQ setting, making it useful for different song sections. There are also modulations for the frequency, queue, and gain for each band separately and separately for each snapshot. The EQ section also has filters and parallel bandpass filters and can be dependent on the stereo field. The plugin has a mixer section with two mixers, allowing for different configurations, and modulation for envelope followers and filters. The plugin also includes step sequences, LFOs, and a delay that can sit in various parts of the mix.

FilterScape is part of a plugin bundle consisting of three plugins, which includes the U-he MFM2. Although the concept behind FilterScape is simple, the new design and layout make it more accessible and user-friendly. "Another little comparison between JP8 and U-He Diva beta

Running both through the freeware Echomania echo VST in real time in Reaper, recording it into Wavelab. U-He with max "divine" quality and using the modelled JP8 components

Diva does sound like it in a general way, but to does seem a bit more "plastic", lacking the extra richness and upper harmonics, brightness

Plus the Roland pitch stick is ace for filter tweaking, not quite the same with the Andromeda's mod wheel controlling Diva!"

u-he's Pedolski VA Soft Synth Updated and Released for Free

u-he or Urs Heckmann is the man behind the recently released and acclaimed Diva virtual analog synth.

"Podolski is a simple, CPU-efficient virtual analogue synthesizer. Basically a cut down version of FilterscapeVA with just one oscillator, one filter, one envelope and two LFOs, it also features a Zebra-style arpeggiator/sequencer plus chorus and delay effects.

Podolski's specialities are the Click parameter (emphasizes the filter attack) and its ability to seamlessly morph between three waveforms (WaveWarp).

Version 1.0 was released as a free gift for visitors to the u-he booth during Musikmesse 2005. Right after Musikmesse it went on the cover mount CD of the German KEYBOARDS magazine (later Sound & Recording). Podolski was u-he's first 'magware' offering, and was distributed with every issue until about 2009.

Some notes from Urs in response to comments:

"Well, hehe, it won't look as 3D as the render of course.

But the new layout with those "channels" that show the signal flow within each module has become really great.

I'd post a screenshot, but alas... I'm still working on some shading algorithms (the gui currently gets rendered on the fly when the editor is opened or resized, not sure if we can keep that up because it takes 2-3 seconds)"

On the new digital oscillator for Diva:

"It's got two oscillators. Each with 8 waveforms. Each waveforms has two "Control" parameters that can be modulated.

Most notably:

- TriangleMod: Does a foldback-distorted triangle wave combined with a symmetry-warp function
- SuperSaw: Does a sawtooth with 6 additional sawtooth mixed in, ad variable detune
- Feedback: Does a sawtooth with distorted feedback at variable (tuned) delay and gain
- Noise: Does noise with adjustable bandpass filtering and cutoff
- PWM: Does PWM with an invented-by-u-he pseudo-resonance control
- plus another sawtooth and triangle waveform

Both oscillators can interact by Ringmodulation, Sync and Crossmodulation.

I guess you'll all easily guess where this is coming from"

"I'll be sitting down with Sascha today to prepare the final touches of the user interface. Maybe we can have a more or less accurate screenshot then.

Basically... Satin is not just a tape emulation. I'm thinking of it as "all of tape"

Without being modelled after specific gear like Diva, Satin still has a mix and match approach. There are various pre-equalisation and post-equalisation curves to choose from as well as various noise reduction techniques and a choice of tape speed, plus a few head/gain adjustments. The sound of tape ranges from subtle to drastic. The adjustable noise level is irresistable

On top of that we've added a choice of typical tape applications:

as a tape emulation it can glue a mix, and there's easy control for up to 8 groups of Satins that share the same settings

as a sound design tool it crunches, compresses, expands, "makes 3D"

in delay mode it does for a bloody damn fine tape delay (2 or 4 heads)

in flanger mode it lets you "fly in" flanging just like in the olden days

as a restauration tool it can "repair" recordings that were made with one machine and digitised from another

In tradition of u-he, Satin is to tape what MFM2 is to delay or what Filterscape is to equalisation. The CPU usage is on par with other tape emulations we've tried. While it doesn't sound exactly like any specific machine, we're confident that Satin behaves very much like those machines would.
