Xiu Xiu Makes the Most Horrendous Synth Sounds Humanly Possible

video by Perfect Circuit

"Toting an extensive range of sonic machines, experimental group Xiu Xiu’s driving members Angela Seo and Jamie Stewart recently paid a visit to our studio to give us a lesson on intentionally crafting “the most disgusting sounds” possible. With their eclectic assortment of test equipment oscillators, a towering Eurorack modular system, effects pedals, and more, prepare your eardrums to be blessed (or barraged, depending on your inclination for harsh electronic sounds) by the pummeling frequencies contained in this video.

With some of our favorite pieces like the Make Noise DPO, Verbos Harmonic Oscillator, and the aptly named Total Sonic Annihilation from Death by Audio, Angela and Jamie show off a few setups for building up immensely destructive audio. Their valuable insight into curating feedback and noise with intention offers plenty of valuable tips and considerations for prospective explorers of the unpredictable and harsher worlds of sound design.

Patina of Purity

video by nbor

"After spending sometime making some presets for sonicLAB Fundamental (a very unusual activity, as you bathe in sine waves), I wondered how they might fit into a musical piece. I joined an odd patch with Audio Damage Phosphor and Arturia Buchla Easel V as they seemed appropriate. Phosphor is all additive synthesis of sine tones, and the Buchla Easel is just....great. I enjoy the contrast of the chaos from Fundamental and slow tones from the others. Overdubs played on t.he Sensel Morph, using MPE"

Meet Sassy - the Audio Spreadsheet Synthesizer

Audio Spreadsheet, 1.0 beta trailer video by Jari Komppa

"Sassy beta is available at https://sol-hsa.itch.io/sassy"

"Sassy is an audio spreadsheet. Or, as it stands, it's THE audio spreadsheet.

It's a spreadsheet. You can add values to cells, ask it to average a range.

It's a synthesizer. You can ask it to generate a sine wave based on time, and output it through your speakers. Add an ADSR envelope, modulate the frequency based on MIDI input note, put in some filters and hey, it's an actual instrument.

Sassy includes over 100 functions, including some that largely make sense in a spreadsheet way (like finding maximum value out of a range) and others that largely make sense in a synthesizer way (like high pass filter, various waveform generators, delays etc) as well as a whole lot that make sense in both (like trigonometry).

Want to control something with a slider? Just add slider() to your formula, and a slider pops up. Same goes for buttons, toggles, graphs, fft:s.

Want to control something with your midi keyboard? Just add calls to midipot, midinote, midinoteon, midival.

Want to control your midi synth with Sassy? Just add midiout, midioutpot, midioutpitch..

Want to take audio in and modify it with Sassy in real time? Just call add in().

Sassy is currently in beta, and further progress depends on feedback. Join on in and come talk with other beta testers [on discord]

1.2 Beta hilights:
- Scope
- Virtual keyboard
- Plotxy, sample+hold+interpolate

1.1 Beta hilights:
- Significantly faster JIT engine
- UI scaling
- Polyphonic midi input
See changelog.txt for details."

Shakmat Modular Harlequin's Context Set for Release on April 10

Announced back in 2019, Shakmat Modular's Harlequin's Context has arrived. Avialable for 295 Euro assembled and 205 Euro as a DIY kit. See the dealers on the right for availability.

"After long design, development, testing and re-design processes, the Harlequin's Context is out early april!

Roles, Acts & Scenes

The Harlequin's Context is a theatre piece in 16 scenes and 4 acts. In those scenes, four channels can shapeshift into different roles such as: offset, random, LFO or envelope. Scene selection can be done manually or can be addressed & sequenced with the CV and gate inputs.

Packed in 12hp with a ton of features, the Harlequin's Context is a powerful tool to prepare a live set with, and to create very peculiar modulation signals in the studio.

A multifaceted module

Harlequin's Context has a very large spectrum of applications : creating “offset scenes” like an analog memory, preparing a live set with precise modulation signals, experimenting with the morph function, using the module as a knob recorder, controlling and sequencing other Select Bus compatible modules,… You got it!

A lot is possible with the Harlequin's Context!"

Spring Reverb

video by gotharman

"I have been experimenting with spring reverbs in the holidays. Here are a tune I made, where the pad sounds in the beginning and the plonky sounds that comes later, are going through a spring reverb."

Small Eurorack System - From Nothing to Crazy

video by Randy Piscione

For modules and patch details - hit Show More. Figured I’d do a video to show what can be done with even a small bunch of this stuff. Video is live patching. It’s a bit long, 15 minutes, but I hope you’ll consider watching the entire video, and follow along with the notes below. Drums are not coming from the small rack. Although I didn’t demo it fully here, the RingFolder is one of the best modules for getting variety out of a small system. Starts with the sequence running – and triggering the drums Sequencer CV to the VCOs (from the first mult) VCOs to the submixer Submixer to the VCF VCF to the VCA VCA to the final mixer Sequencer gate to both EGs (from the first mult)

DAFM DIY "SEGA Genesis" YM3438 Synth + Nemesis Delay Pedal improvisation

video by Floyd Steinberg

"The DAFM synth is a DIY project by KASSER SYNTHS based on the YM2612 or YM3438 FM soundchip which was also built into the SEGA Genesis game consoles (that was in the early 90s). It has 6 four-operator FM voices that can be used polyphonic and multitimbral.
The NEMESIS delay is a guitar pedal featuring a wide range of delay effects (tape, analog, digital, pitch-shifting, reverse, you name it). It has even more effects on offer when used with Source Audios "Neuro Desktop" app on Windows, Mac or Android.

More info on the DAFM synth:" [posted here]
