STEIM At Risk Again - The new vision for Dutch media arts

Updates via the comments: scan from the NYTimes via bauke van der wal and via wtr "The message posted above is not the official letter from STEIM, they will respond after the vote in parlament this monday, this was a personal message from Jon, but still very important..." See the comments in this post for more.

Original post:

If you've been coming to this site for a while, you might recall this post back on May 22, 2008 regarding STEIM being at risk of losing it's funding. On December 2, 2008 this post went up announcing they were safe. Well it looks like they are at risk yet again. The following is the content of an email from STEIM forwarded to me by John Levin.

Subject: "The new vision for Dutch media arts"
Body: "Dear friends and colleagues,
I apologize for the mass-emailing, this is quite important. You may have heard already about the new cultural plan for the Netherlands being pushed through by the current government, a minority coalition of market liberals and conservatives backed by Geert Wilders' anti-immigration freedom party.

While all federal programs in the Netherlands are taking hit, none are being hit so hard, so disproportionately, and so directly as the arts and culture sector. Particularly disastrous will be the cuts within the arts and technology sector. All new media art institutions in the Netherlands will be completely defunded, this includes STEIM, V2, the Waag, and other institutes with long histories and international reputations. These labs provide local and international artists space and support to perform, exhibit, and develop the cutting edge new art forms of our times. Their loss will be devastating to the Netherlands' cultural scene and deeply felt throughout the international media arts world.

The funding cuts will go into effect in 2013. The government has ignored the advice of the arts council, who suggested a phased-in solution which would give artists and organizations time to react and formulate new plans. This move illustrates the underlying motives of the politicians: not for a restructuring of support for the arts, but rather a direct attack against the culture of art that has prevailed
for so long in the Netherlands. The cuts are, in effect, a cultural coup d'etat.

So, what can you do? The unfortunate answer is, not very much. The politicians are implementing this new vision of Dutch culture with a vengeance, and will probably approve the cuts during the vote on Monday. The best thing to do is spread awareness of the situation, both in the Netherlands and abroad through your networks.

There are also two petitions being circulated prior to the Parliament vote this Monday. Please sign them and share.

http://petities.nl/petitie/bezuinigen-op-cultuur-zonder-alle-feiten-nooit
(general petition, goal: 40,000 signatures by Monday)

http://www.change.org/petitions/save-dutch-media-art-orgs-govt-plans-to-slash-them-all
(specifically to support Media Arts organizations)

If you live in the Netherlands there's more you can do to help. There is a large protest being organized during the vote on Monday. According to lobbyists close to the government in the Hague, a large presence here could slow down the legislation and give arts organizations more time to develop alternative plans for survival.

More information on the protests can be found here:
http://www.marsderbeschaving.nl/
http://www.marsderbeschaving.nl/index_en.php (English)

More information about the funding cuts, particularly for art and technology institutions:

Best always,
Jon

FL Studio Mobile is coming soon! - FAQ - http://support.image-line.com/knowledgebase/base.php?id=85&ans=200

Yes the hand is inside the iPad. With proper training and diet it is possible to fit the FL Studio Guru INSIDE an iPad.

FL STUDIO MOBILE FAQ

What about Android OS? It's on the roadmap, stop nagging! We have a development team working on a low-latency Android audio-engine and there are many screen resolutions and device specifications to consider, it's not as simple as you may think :)

Does this mean FL Studio on Mac OSX soon? FL Studio Mobile is not a port of the Windows version of FL Studio. It is the product of a completely separate development team, and code, so FL Studio Mobile, while compatible with FL Studio has no impact on FL Studio development and vice versa.

Can I load my own samples? Not in version 1.0. We plan to enable user uploads in a future update.

Can I use VSTs? No, iOS does not support VSTs and frankly the devices it runs on don't have the CPU power to perform the synthesis you are used to on a desktop. FL Studio Mobile uses high quality sample based instruments made from Image-Line plugins and sample packs.

Motherboard TV: The Father of Circuit Bending: Reed Ghazala & NY Fest

via motherboard.tv

This is part of Motherboard’s Sound Builders series that they are running in celebration of Bent Festival's kick-off in Brooklyn today.

"This particular installment takes the Motherboard team to the 'Anti-Theory Workshop' of Reed Ghazala, the father of circuit bending. It’s a nice timely tease for this awesome New York electronic music and arts fest.

With Ghazala as our guide, we navigate the history of circuit-bending sound art from its accidental beginnings in his childhood bedroom to the discovery's lasting impact on electronic music and art. Host Jordan Redaelli even has a shot on the tinkered toys, creating a duet with the legendary circuit tweaker that is unique to say the least."

"In 1967, Reed Ghazala discovered something amazing just by sitting at his desk.

At the time he was a broke teenager, musician, and experimental artist known to friends for his magnetic sculptures and the sort of pyrotechnic displays that once sent him into emergency surgery. And then one day in 1967, his desk began to emit strange sounds. He recognized their sci-fi whirrs and electronic tones as something like the sound of the expensive synthesizers of the day, and he was sure he wasn’t imagining it.

The source turned out to be nothing more than a toy amplifier he had left in a desk drawer, its wires exposed due to a broken case, its power still switched on. The toy’s innards were short circuiting against the inside of the metal desk, and in so doing were making music that neither its creators nor its owner could ever have imagined. Circuit bending was born.

Today thousands of amateur electronics hackers around the planet follow Reed’s lead, customizing or simply breaking their synthesizers, children’s toys and other easy-to-crack-open gadgets with the hope of generating uncanny and wonderful cacophonies of sound..." Full post on motherboard.tv.

Update: I just created the Bent Fest label and added it to a ton of posts. Check it out for a trip back in time and to get a taste of some of what you can see at the event. Note there are a couple of general circuit bending fest posts as well.

XV5080 Demos by CoolColJ

"At the start is a flanged pad I made yesterday on the Roland XV5080.
It uses 2 different detuned sawtooth on each side to create a PWM tone, and then flanged, with 2nd wheel/breath controller to flange rate

Then I load up raw JP8 string and later sawtooth waves - 2 variants on a single tone. On the XV5080 some waves have an A, B and C variants, some are just stereo versions of each other, at different phases, others are inverted to create PWM effects when detuned.
I dial in some Analog feel function which creates a detune and makes it all nice and stereo - remind me of my Jupiter 8 in dual mode :)

This is done using 1 of the 4 tones in a patch - each tone can hold up to 2 different waves!
So you don't to waste 2 tones to create a stereo effect or detune

Going through the different filter types with some LFO modulation - bliss!

----

At first I didn't quite like the sound of the unit, with the presets and all, but now that I've fiddled with it, it's a keeper me thinks :)
128 voice polyphony, good effects and filters and can load samples for a decent price.
Once my SRX-07 expansion board arrives with more waves and all, it's gonna be even more fun!"

"Loaded a sample that I use to benchmark all my samplers, hardware and software into my XV5080, from a Smartmedia card. Just dropped a wav file into the Roland directory in Windows
and loaded it up on the XV5080

Sounds good, but you only get a 2 octave range on either side of the original key.

Filter is decent, as beefy as the one on my old S-550 at the bottom end, but cleaner, smoother and more refined sounding. And you get way more filter types and can use stereo samples.
Low pass, band pass, high pass and peak - plus in some structures you can use dual filters
Definitely sounds better than the filters in a soft sampler

This 1.5mb sample took 10 seconds to load via Smartmedia - only took 1 second to save on Windows though.... Might be faster via SCSI with a SCSI to Card reader with a 8GB Compact Flash Card

Sounddiver doesn't support the samples you load in unfortunately, well you can't select them from SD. But when I use the Roland XV editor to assign them to a patch, and then have SD request the edit buffer they show up.

So that is one way around it, using both editors togther. I don't like the Roland one much, but it supports everything and is fast so I use it as a remote control of the XV5080 - especially for selecting patches :)

Clip was limited due to the massive volume fluctuations"

"Testing my own drum samples loaded via Smart Media - Recorded via XV5080's digital output

808 kick, sanre and 909 kick, loop and a synthesised kick from Stomper.

Testing out drum samples on the XV5080. I mapped them across the keyboard in a single patch, and the filters get turned on and off. You can use 4 tones/samples in a patch in such a manner, while still retaining the synthesis features.

The 808 kick and snare uses the FXM trick as shown here to add "life" to the static samples

http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/nov03/articles/xvjvmasterclass.htm?session=f9f7e5e0282848d9a0f7cd70cc04cd63

I trimmed the sounds right at the very start of the attack snap, and I can't detect the transient being cut off. A problem with the Roland samplers in the past like the S550 and S760!
The XV5080 engine could make a nice stand alone sampler.... if they still existed...

I wonder how the Fantom compares?"

Sequential Circuits Prophet 2000 Sampler - Expanded

"Sequential Prophet 2000, expanded to 8 individual outs and 512KB RAM. This sampler really sounds great, can be surprisingly clean for a 12-bit sampler but lowering the sample rate will give you that classic low-fi grit! It has some unusual features for a sampler such as analogue filters and an arpeggiator. All this at a far lower price than the likes of the Emulator II are going for these days...

The voices are a bit strange/garbled when the keyboard is turned on 'cold' but they always work fine when restarted. Not sure why this is, maybe just a quirk of the machine? Other than this it all seems to be working as it should, it loads and saves discs OK and I've managed to sample into it. The disk drive is a bit fussy with older disks but I've tried it with some new TDK DD discs and they work perfectly. I've tested each of the individual outputs too and they seem fine. The pitch/mod wheels work and I've got signals in and out of the MIDI ports."

Ditched the other f/x ideas and may simply add some kind of sequencer to change up the oscillator rhythms, but after going through tons of permutations this is the sound I like.

And the description from the UK store (not seeing MIDI support):

"The iOS version of the world-renowned TENORI-ON brings you a completely new musical interface. Even if you don't know much about music, you can create music intuitively as if you were arranging sounds in space. The music that you see on the 16 × 16 grid of buttons is the music that is performed.

On the 16 × 16 grid of buttons, basically, the horizontal direction is time, and the vertical direction is pitch.By laying sounds on these buttons, you can combine rhythms and melodies to produce music. A button will glow when its sound is produced. The movements of the glowing lights produce a visual performance.

TNR-i can produce 16 types of sounds at the same time (16 layers), and it can remember up to 16 song patterns produced using those sounds (16 blocks). By switching between song patterns in real time, you can produce a rich variety of musical expressions.

There are six different types of performance modes that you can select for each layer. You can make elaborate music by combining different modes. In score mode, the most fundamental of the modes, you can arrange sounds horizontally (temporally) and vertically (by pitch). In the exciting random mode, the sounds that you arrange are not just played in order—the melody and rhythm constantly change as twists are added. In draw mode, you can perform music by tracing your finger across the buttons as if drawing a picture. In bounce mode, the glowing lights are like bouncing balls that produce sound when they fall. In push mode, you can continuously change the sound as you perform. In solo mode, which is fun for solo performances, you can easily adjust the speed of repetition and the pitch.

First, please try the demo. You can experience the joy of performance just by switching layers.
- Loading the Demo: From the menu (touch the display), touch File menu, touch All Blocks, iD-Xtra_uncTK, and then Load.
- Switching layers: Press R5 and the area that the 16 × 16 buttons are in at the same time. (You can double-tap R5 to hold it and make it easier to switch layers.)

The appeal of TNR-i isn't just limited to its faithful duplication of the TENORI-ON concept and its design and interface, which were developed under the supervision of Toshio Iwai.
If you are connected to a network, you can participate in TNR-i sessions with distant friends and others. Up to four people can connect to each other over a network and enjoy performing together at the same time. First, tap Clear and the display at the same time to activate the Game Center feature. Then, invite your friends, or use the auto-match feature to automatically select a partner, and start your session. For more details, see page 23 of the internal manual.
Manual: From the menu (touch the display), touch System Menu and then Manual.

If you update the TENORI-ON (TNR-W or TNR-O) to version 2.1 and use it with TNR-i, you can participate in sessions using the TENORI-ON (TNR-W or TNR-O).
For details, see the TENORI-ON webpage at http://www.global.yamaha.com/tenori-on/.

The preset sounds of TNR-i are the same as those of the TENORI-ON, and the performance files are also compatible. You can use iTunes to transfer performance files saved on your TENORI-ON SD card to TNR-i. Of course, the reverse is also possible.

Please enjoy the world of TENORI-ON.

Notes
*You must have an Internet connection to participate in a network session. You also have to sign in to the Game Center.
*User Voice is not available.
