Rheyne - Mother Jam #2 (3x Moog Mother-32, TC Hall of Fame, Roland Demora)

Published on May 14, 2016 Rheyne

"A patch using the sequencers of 3x Moog Mother-32 analog synths, reverb from a TC Hall of Fame, and delay from a Roland Demora. Good speakers or headphones are recommended. All three sequencers were pre-programmed before recording the video. I'm holding a camcorder with my right hand and making slight adjustments to the patch with my left (trying to keep my hand out of the frame) but this patch creates lots of modulations on its own without any adjustments. The audio is directly from the mixer and is in-sync with the vid, so you'll see the lights on the LFOs will match what you're hearing."

Grand Illusions - Mini Theremin & Stylophone

Published on May 24, 2015 Grand Illusions

For those not familiar with Grand Illusions, he covers odd toys and collectibles. I thought I'd share these two here.

"The theremin is the only musical instrument that you play without touching! Invented in 1920 by the Russian inventor Leon Theremin, this is one of the earliest electronic instruments.

A full theremin has two antennae, one allows you to control the pitch of the note and the other the volume. This mini theremin only has one antenna, which allows you to control the pitch of the note. As you move your hand towards the antenna, the pitch of the note goes up, and as you move your hand away, the note gets lower. The slider on the left hand side of the machine has three positions; when it is pushed in fully, the theremin is off. In the mid position, the theremin plays quietly, and when it is pulled out fully, the theremin plays louder. There is a small jack socket at the back, which allows you to plug the theremin into another device, such as a small amplifier."

Stylophone

Published on Apr 17, 2013 Grand Illusions

"Although Tim didn't acquire this toy until the 1980s, it was already 20 years old at the time - the Stylophone came out in 1968! It is an early form of synthesizer, although as it is really a toy, the controls are quite simple. When you touch one of the metal keys with the stylus, this completes a circuit, and a note plays. On the front is the ON-OFF switch, and also a switch to add vibrato. On the back is a rotary control which changes the pitch of the instrument, which is useful if you need to combine the Stylophone with other instruments.

The Stylophone made a number of appearances in films, music and TV. David Bowie's track Space Oddity uses a Stylophone near the beginning.

Around 3 million were sold, before ceasing production in 1975. However recently, the son of the original inventor has started a new company, making an updated version of the Stylophone."

Live Synth Jam 39 : Korg Volca, Roland Boutique, PO-12, Microbrute and MicroKorg.

Published on May 14, 2016 Todd Smith

"This synthesizer jam uses all internal sequencing. This is the first time all my old pieces have been together in the studio in over 2 months and the results are pretty wicked !! The Teenage Engineering PO-12, Roland Boutique JU-06, Korg Volca Bass and Arturia Microbrute are all on sequencer duty. The PO-12 is using 3 patterns in chain mode to create a 4 measure loop. The Arturia Microbrute handles the low end sub bass while the Korg Volca Bass plays a backing Synth Bass. The Roland Boutique JU-06 supplies lead synth sequence, I switch the range in order to change octaves live. Microkorg and Korg Volca keys are played together via midi to create the pad/lead type sound.

Praise to the Eternity of Jesus - Messiaen

Published on May 14, 2016 davidryle

"Olivier Messiaen's beautiful piece from 'Quartet for the End of Time'. It is the 5th segment of part 3 'Structures'. It is supposedly a similar composition as the 1930's version of Oraison for the Ondes Martenot played at the Paris World Fair of 1937.

Instrumentation here is the large format modular for the main voice with a light background portion using SampleTron choir. The chord part is a Dave Smith Prophet 8 and Waldorf MicroQ.

Heretical liberties were taken in places to add filtered noise, sequential note patterns and phasing to lend texture to the body of the work.

I abandoned an attempt at controlled vibrato in the appropriate places due to my dislike of the results. Probably due to the fact that I was using eight oscillators for the main voice.

The piece was a midi file played earlier, sent to the various synthesizers and then recorded in real-time at once to a stereo track in Cubase. The beginning reversed reverb part was pre-recorded from an instance of the into bars and set to play prior to the main recorded track.

Video editing in Final Cut Pro."

Vermona ET6-1 & Fostex 260 ambient (mic record)

Published on May 14, 2016 Leoš Hort

"Quick ambient jam with this great drone machine and multitrack looper. Im not primarily into ambient or drone but this setup begs for some athmospheric stuff and its great fun! In fostex I put looping cassette and recorded sound from vermona to it- Then it can be transposed with changing the playback speed of the player. I also used feedback that I shape with supergreat EQ that Fostex 260 has and this way buld two oscillator-like channels. The mix goes thru extrenal phaser and reverb.
Enjoy"

"This is the Frequency Central System X Oscillator I built its made following the same schematics as the classic late1970’s Roland 100M VCO just instead of a pair of ua726’s it uses CA3046 instead, I didn’t realise the manual knob let you adjust the pulse width you learn something new everyday with an oscilloscope at hand. Anyway the Pulse width modulation appears to be working fine and the Square Wave is pretty much Square lol."
