Discovering Electronic Music (1969-1983)

Discovering Electronic Music (1969-1983) video upload by Fran Blanche

Note this is new cleaned up, single video, version of Discovering Electronic Music first posted here back in 2009.

"This film by Bernard Wilets was originally produced around 1969-70, but this reel that I present is the updated version from 1983 which includes new added Fairlight sequences with Rory Kaplan. The original sections are VERY 1969 and the color of this print is still remarkable. Great footage of Moog modular synths right in their heyday and lots of screenshots of waveforms and such. Is it coincidental that so much Bach is being played on the Moog? Calling Wendy Carlos! The film features several people who went on to make their names in electronic music, including Rory Kaplan, Douglas Leedy, and Jean-Claude Risset. This reel was transferred from my own 16mm archive print using my Eiki Telecine. The Eiki has a 5 Blade Shutter that projects a 24fps print at 30 frames per second for a flickerless NTSC transfer. A special diffusion plate eliminates the 'hot spot' of the projector, and the sound is pulled right from the optical track. Enjoy!

New DSI Pro 2 linear FM - Tutorial and Demo

Published on Nov 7, 2018 once upon a synth

"The DSI Pro 2 now has linear FM! A new OS update was released recently (v1.4) which includes linear FM as well as a bunch of other features. In this video I'll focus on the FM part. Previously it only had exponential FM which is the one for making inharmonic metalic sounds. Linear FM is like the Yamaha DX7 FM where you can play notes."

"The Junior 106 is an incredibly rare and hard to find custom modified Juno 106 done by SynthSpa. It was completely serviced and modified in 2016. It has all the functionality of a Juno 106 in a smaller form factor. It has purple LEDs, yellow display window, and a yellow illuminated pitch bender. And, it's YELLOW!! I also had SynthSpa put some wood cheeks on it (original matching yellow cheeks will be included too). Everything works perfectly."

And the limited edition black themed 25th Anniversary Bass Station II & official press release:

"Major firmware update + synth giveaway

To celebrate 25 years of Bass Station and thank users for their support, Novation is releasing the Bass Station II v2.5 firmware update and giving away a Bass Station II 25th Anniversary Edition – one of only five units off the production line!

To be in with a chance of winning the limited edition monosynth, join the Synth Owners Facebook group and like the competition post from 1-7 November 2018.

Bass Station II v2.5

The v2.5 firmware update adds some of the most requested features including filter tracking, paraphonic mode, microtuning and new preset Soundpacks. Installation couldn't be easier from the Novation Components content manager.

Paraphonic mode

Bass Station II is now a paraphonic monosynth, because you can control the pitches of each of the two oscillators separately in its single-voice architecture. Play two notes at a time rather than just one and get interesting interactions through the Ring and Filter Mod.

Filter tracking

Filter tracking was one of the most requested features. The filter includes variable keyboard tracking in Bass Station II v2.5 – the best for matching higher notes to increased brightness.

Envelope retriggering

Bass Station II's secret sound-design weapon is envelope retriggering. It’s now possible to configure your envelopes to retrigger once the decay stage has ended, opening up a whole range of new possibilities.

Oscillator error

Oscillator error introduces a small and adjustable random detune on each note-on event. This can be used to generate some very beautiful, subtle (or not) musical dissonance, very much in the same way that vintage synths do (because of the looser tolerance of their electronic components). Paraphonic mode makes it as dramatic as possible.

Microtuning editing

Completely control the frequency triggered by each key press, giving your scales another dimension.

New presets

Two new Soundpacks are in Components: Silver and Sinevibes. Silver's presets explore the v2.5 features and inspire new tracks and sound design. Sinevibes, designed by Sinevibes’ founder Artemij Pavlov, gives 101 classic Bass Station II presets.

Warm greetings to you all

Bass Station II can now support a custom message display at start-up.

Uber Rare Emulator Analog Interface

This one is in via Loscha who had the following to say:

"I'm helping a friend clean up and we found this. We're going to try set it up for testing, but it will be for sale ultimately. We're going to hook up the mains, and make sure the CPU still turns over and generates a signal. We don't know anyone in Melbourne with an Emulator to try and pair it up with, though.

Probably the rarest bit of E-Mu kit that's out there. There are very few references to it, and these are the only good quality pictures of it available. Even after it sells, I want to keep the gallery of images, as it's a fascinating bit of weirdness."

Indeed. You'll find some pics of the inside below and at the gallery here.

Rare Analog Roland TR-808 Clone - Drum Line 808Pro Drum Machine Synthesizer Synth

via this auction

Never seen one of these before. Note the Retro Gear Shop is a watermark and not printed on the unit.

"Drum Line 808Pro

This is a very rare Roland TR-808 style clone. It sounds quite awesome and is very fun to use, with a responsive screen that shows parameter change info, stereo panning features on all drum voices, tune-able kick drum, and stereo filters with resonance on the outputs, with midi in/out/thru plus din, individual outputs, stereo outputs & headphone out. A serious DJ electronic producer machine. It's fully functional and sounds amazing. The only functional thing is the reverb knob on the 3 toms does not appear to have much of an effect, otherwise all outputs, knobs, buttons etc work properly. More affordable and feature rich alternative to an 808. Comes with power cable. Operates at 220v, step up 110v - 220v transformer can be included in the sale if needed. Cosmetically it is in great shape with some minor wear on the sides."

Super Rare Vintage TBS-303 MKII Bassline Mono Synth (TB-303 clone+) SN 0399058 w/ Original Box

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

I've only seen one of these go up for sale back in 2007. Note the font under TBS in the upper left matches Sequential Circuits font.

Details form the listing: "What happens when you take the basic analog synthesis engine of Roland's classic TB-303 bassline, add MIDI control, and put it in a seriously heavy-duty tabletop housing?

You end up with TBS Musical Instruments TBS-303 MKII!

These are extremely rare. My guess is this is one of the very few of these that were ever sold to the US.

Per the creator's website--

The following list represents some of the main features of the TBS-303 MarkII :

Analogue circuitry is nearly equivalent to the original
Fully discrete oscillator and filter section
Build-in MIDI interface requires no external SYNC24 syncbox
Slides programmable via Note overlap
Accents programmable via MIDI note-ON velocity value (>100)
User selectable MIDI channel
Better that the original ; 'Heavy-duty' housing and professional potentiometers
The TBS-303 is on purpose build in a desktop type housing to make real time filter-control by hand easier.
Dimensions (WxHxD): 250 x 170 x 65mm

Additional cool features:

External audio input
Infinite accent button
Infinite slide/portamento button

Please check the website for additional info and audio samples.

The sound of this box is quite awesome. The top-mounted slide/accent buttons allow for additional realtime creativity. The external input lets you use this in ways that no original TB-303 can. Best of all, the MIDI implementation gives you all kinds of sequencing possibilities that you didn't have with the original.

Sure, you can make it sound just like a TB-303-- or you can use it in new and creative ways."

Buchla USA Revisiting 100 Series in 2019?

This one spotted by Soviet Space Child.

Note the system in the background. Buchla started in the 1960s with the 100 series, followed by the 200 series in 1970. The new 200e from Don Buchla arrived in 2004. BEMI took over and re-released an updated version of the Buchla Music Easel and various systems and modules. BEMI then of course became Buchla USA. You can read a condensed history of Buchla on Wikipedia here.

Of course it could just be a Calandar.

It's worth noting, if you are into eurorack, Catalyst Audio currently makes a eurorack system based on the the Buchla 100 series.
