Sonicsmith Introduces the Modulor A1 Synth

Modulor A1 synth intoduction Published on Dec 4, 2017 Sonicsmith

"We introduce the Modulor A1 synth.

It's a semi-modular, analog music synthesizer that can create traditional sounds but extreme modulations as well.
It runs on standard 9V pedal PSU and has 1V/octave pitch input."

"MODULOR A1

SEMI-MODULAR ANALOG SYNTHESIZER.

Our newest synth is not audio controlled but can come as a perfect accompaniment to them.

In fact The Modulor A1 will enhance any existing analog synth rig, allowing them to enrich their sound beyond belief. The Modulor A1 contains a VCO, LFO (each sync-able), two VCAs (one dedicated to the VCO and the other to the LFO), and numerous patching options. Both VCO and LFO can be square or triangle waves and a switch sends LFO to modulate VCO frequency for some vibrato (at lower LFO rates) or FM (at LFO rates up to 200Hz) effects.

The Modulor A1 is here to dive deep into modular synthesis in the 9V pedal environment. This Voltage Controlled Synthesizer has two audio outputs. One at regular line level (+4dBu) via big jack, and the other is a mini jack on the top panel (9V). This can be fed into a modular synthesizer environments if one wants to use the VCO voice through his Eurorack inputs for example. Another use for this mini jack oscillator is a ring modulation source on the Squaver P1 or any other CV input for that matter. You will get surprised of the results every time you patch it to a different CV destination. As a stand-alone synth the Modulor A1 has quite a bit of power as well. Allowing you to make all kinds of effects and melodies without even a single patch cable. Of course when you consider a few mini-jack to mini-jacks cables the possibilities are more exiting and you'r doomed to fall into an endless pool of tweaking. Either as a companion to our Audio Controlled Synths or along with your own modular synths, this handy 9 X 10 cm synth is a tiny version of a modular synth. The VCO pitch input is 1V/octave and has a 9V minijack output on the front. The other VCO output is a big jack on the back at line level unbalanced+4 dBu. VCO sync input will reset the wave's position to zero every time a threshold of 0V is crossed. The LFO sync input threshold is 3.0v for compatibility with most gate signals. Two knobs for pitch offset 20Hz-20kHz and the other knob is -4-+4 semitones.
Features:

VCO, LFO and two VCAs

9V standard pedal PSU

VCO with two outputs: a big jack +4 dBu post VCA and a minijack 9V out without VCA to control as clock or mix into Eurorack system.

Sync input on both the LFO and the VCO

LFO from 0.2 Hz up to 200Hz for FM synthesis

“LFO to VCO pitch in” switch for instant satisfaction"

Trueno: New Hardware Digital Analogue Hybrid Synth on a USB Stick

via Trueno:

"Trueno (from the Spanish for thunder) is a 3 oscillator analogue synthesiser in a USB stick. With the same oscillator circuits found in modular monstrosities and its wild, aggressive filter; Trueno does not compromise on sound quality.

Powerful features such as a built in 24 bit ADC, instant preset recall and automation control allow it to integrate easily into your music production process or performance. By swapping the front panel for full PC/Mac control from a VST/AU plugin or standalone application, we can offer Trueno at a price that can’t be touched by anything with comparable features.

Now you can add the raw, powerful analogue sounds you’ve been craving for the same price as a plugin.

We can’t wait to hear what you’re going to do with it!

What does it do?

3 VCOs
Great oscillators are essential in any analogue synthesiser worth its salt. Trueno has three highly stable digitally controlled VCOs with automatic tuning. Recreate all your favourite sounds and make electrifying new ones with saw, pulse, triangle and noise* waveforms, as well as a powerful digital mode.

*osc 3 only

AM, PWM & Filter FM
A wealth of modulation options, unheard of in any analogue synthesiser at this price point. Oscillator AM, PWM as well as filter FM. You can even use digital wavetables as a modulation source.

Introducing the X-Bay Ultimate Synthesizer & Patchbay by Anatal Electronics

The X-Bay Ultimate Synthesizer by Anatal Electronics is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter. Note you can find a banner link to the X-Bay campaign in the top right banner section here on MATRIXSYNTH, so you can get back to the campaign anytime.

In short the X-Bay is an analog modular synthesizer and patchbay in a 4U rack mount enclosure. It will host analog modules featuring designs from classic vintage synths, for example Roland oscillators and Oberheim filters. You can freely patch and route the modules as you would on a classic modular system, however you do so in a software editor. One way to think of it is as a true analog version of Clavia's Nord Modular, or a software modular with an analog synth engine. What is the main advantage? Size, flexibility, true analog synth engine, and of course, the ability to save patches, all at a lower cost; and it will be expandable. Interestingly, the system can also be used as a cable free patchbay for full integration with your other gear, including other modular hardware and software. The X-Bay offers a cost effective and space saving way to expand your current system or to explore the world of modular from scratch.

The following is the description from the Kickstarter campaign. Be sure to check out the campaign for additional demos and images.

Imagine that you can capture all the patch capabilities of your analog modular in one magic box. Maintaining the full analog signal path, configuration and recall via software. Imagine that you can put together an analog synth like a car in a computer game. A Jupiter oscillator, an Oberheim filter, a Korg envelope ... assembled in a few clicks and with endless routing options.

Nothing virtual, genuine vintage analog sound with famous synth chips from the 70's and 80's.

Completely modular with cable-less analog patch matrix.

Patch cable-less with analog switching chips and software, full digital control.

Without AD/DA conversions between matrix input and output for 100% analog signal path and true zero latency.

Option to function partly or fully as cable-less patchbay for all external devices too.

Option to cable-less patch and control other 3th party modular synths too.

Total analog recall, switch between cable-less wiring configurations instantly. Option to work with downloadable presets too.

Extendable cable-less patch matrix with switching cards, can grow to your needs and desires.

Extendable sound with vintage module cards.

Compact and robust 19" enclosure with optional custom front plate for enclosure pledges that fill up our goal.

Xtreme price break, affordable automated analog audio matrix (search ebay on "64 audio matrix" and see for yourself).

Hard gold plated pcb's assembled in Europe, build to last a lifetime.

We from Anatal Electronics worked for many years on an extendable analog patching matrix that works with chips and software. Upon that patch matrix we build a modular synthesizer with real analog sound that can be controlled with chips and software instead of cables. All analog settings and patch configurations can be saved and restored. For your reference it can be seen as a real analog Nord Modular, an extendable polyphonic Arturia Matrix Brute or a modular Omega infinity with up to 256x256 modulation matrix size.

X-Bay works with cards for extending the matrix and also for adding more of our our vintage modules. The matrix can be extended from 32x32 to 256x256 IO.

Affordable quality

Because every aspect can be controlled digitally there is no need perse for physical buttons or sliders, they are optional not mandatory. This saves a lot of development time and production costs and is the reason why we don't need to compromise on quality for an affordable price. We use ddr pc memory connectors for all extension cards because they are around for decades and many are familiar with their ease of use. Another benefit of not having physical knobs or sliders is that they cannot wear out and cause noise.

The price of components and connectors often depends on how many are sold. Because the connectors we use are in every pc they are affordable and reliable.

Our offer is so generous compared to comparable products that one might wonder if it can be any good. Our pricing is partly business strategy but for the greater part the result of having the right group of people get together at the right point in history. Over a century of combined experience in electronics, software development and vintage synthesizer technology, ignited with passion and the desire to make a difference, can cause a true genuine revolution in a significant industry. We did it because we can and now we need you to make it happen. Be part of something majestic!

Proven technology and components

The underlying concepts for the switching modulation matrix is like other networking technologies, complex but around for many decades. The audio signal switching chips we use are in production for more than 25 years. Our effort made it possible to have such a matrix in a small enclosure so that it will fit in a 19" rack.

The synthesizer modules are implemented with reissued, cloned or original chips from Curtis Electronics and SSM. By many considered as the best choice and many well known vintage synthesizer from the 70's and early 80's are implemented with these chips.

How to play

Connect a midi keyboard or midi software like cubase and control it like any other midi device. Modular connections and analog settings can be applied with our software that runs on devices with internet browsers. Also over WIFI for phones and tablets. Separate mouse and touch interface is provided. It does not mean that X-Bay cannot be controlled by knobs or sliders. It is even remarkably easy to make a true analog controller with direct contact pots. Mind you many, if not most, synthesizer have encoding controllers which is basically digital control and differs not much from a midi controller that you can already use since X-Bay is midi controllable. For sure in the near future an analog controller will be provided by either us or 3th parties."

Reon Driftboxes SE, J, and W

REON drift boxパフォーマンス Published on Mar 9, 2016

Note the video above is from March in 2016, so these are not technically new. Reon gear tends to be promoted via Japanese channels. As you can see their website is primarily in Japanese only.  They also do a bit of one off and customized gear. Check out the pink one!

Previously featured Reon driftboxes included the driftbox S, S ver II, R, Q, V, E, C, T, and G announced here, back in 2013. There were also modular versions and a Roland branded DriftBox R model announced in 2015. You can find demos and pics via the Reon label here.

BTW, the different spellings and capitalizations I'm using for Driftbox is on purpose. Roland branded it DriftBox with a capital D and B, and Reon interchanges between driftbox, all lowercase, and Driftbox with the capital D. I have also seen it as Drift Box.

That said, not featured here on MATRIXSYNTH before now, are the driftbox SE, J, and W. The following are some details Google translated from Reon.

Roland Introduces the D-05 - Boutique Version of the Roland D-50

Published on Sep 9, 2017 RolandChannel

It may not have all the sliders of the concept module posted here, but it does have the engine. An interesting side note is that this is Roland's first synth to feature their "newly developed Digital Circuit Behavior (DCB)". The second video explains what this is. It is interesting. I always assumed digital was digital and easily ported. I do know that DACs (digital to analog converters) can have an impact on the sound you hear from a synth, and one of the reasons why many prefer the sound of the original DX7 vs. newer hardware. Nord/Clavia also advertised their new DACs on the Nord Lead 2 allowing for a cleaner sound if I remember correctly. All that said, it is interesting to think that Roland took time to work on their DCB technology to get a sound closer to the original, vs. just porting the digital engine. I'm looking forward to A/B tests with the original.

Roland D-05 Boutique Linear Synthesizer Sound Module - Overview and Demo

Published on Sep 9, 2017 Musician's Friend

And the press release:

"New Roland Boutique module recreation of the renowned D-50 Linear Synthesizer from the 1980s

Los Angeles, CA, September 9, 2017 — Roland announces the D-05 Linear Synthesizer, the latest addition to the growing Roland Boutique electronic instrument lineup. The D-05 is a compact reproduction of Roland’s D-50 Linear Synthesizer from the late 1980s, one of the most influential synthesizers ever produced. Combining the newly developed Digital Circuit Behavior (DCB) sound generator with the actual samples used in the original instrument, the D-05 delivers the D-50’s iconic, highly recognizable sounds with complete authenticity, backed by all the modern conveniences of the compact and affordable Roland Boutique module format.

Released in 1987, the D-50 was Roland’s very first all-digital synthesizer. Powered by the revolutionary Linear Arithmetic (LA) Synthesis engine, the instrument’s unique mix of sampled attacks and synthesized sustaining waveforms – plus built-in chorus, reverb/delay, and EQ for studio-quality polish – made it a must-have synth for musicians around the world. The D-50’s bold new sounds and beautifully crafted presets inspired artists everywhere and quite literally dominated the popular music, film soundtracks, and commercial jingles of the era. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of this giant in the history of synthesis, Roland presents an inspiring recreation that brings the genuine D-50 experience to the music creators of today and beyond.

At the D-05’s core lies the first synthesizer with Roland’s DCB technology. Paired with the exact PCM attack and loop samples that were so vital to the D-50 sound, the D-05 precisely recreates every tonal nuance in stunning detail. The user interface is totally authentic as well, with the familiar D-50 panel layout and many direct-access controls. Even the all-important D-50 joystick is included, allowing users to smoothly morph between different mixes of Upper and Lower Tones in real time.

The D-05 also includes many modern enhancements not available with the original D-50. The 64-step polyphonic sequencer is ideal for performance and music creation and offers the ability to sequence shuffle and gate timing along with tempo and patch changes. There’s also a built-in arpeggiator for adding movement to the D-05’s already evocative LA Synthesis sounds.

Like all Roland Boutique modules, the D-05 is extremely portable, runs on USB bus power or batteries, and functions as a USB audio/MIDI interface for performing and producing with a computer. It also includes a built-in speaker for monitoring the sound in mobile situations. When mounted in the optional K-25m Keyboard Unit, the D-05 can be used as a compact, all-in-one synth with 25 velocity-sensitive keys."
