PCB Design

Wave G Monophonic Synthesizer

Printed circuit board version 3 is been used in this synthesizer at the moment. This version works according to design expectations and the production board if the goal is reached, number 4, will be based on this but with a number of minor improvements, such as slight repositioning of the mounting holes and potentiometers and switches - to line up better with the metal enclosure.I've also added a new digital to analog convertor circuit which provides more stable and accurate output voltages for the frequency control voltage output.

Step Sequencer

Version 2 of the PCB board operates within design parameters and the only additional modifications needed will be to the positioning of the controls and adjustment to the number of function LED's.

The Enclosure

The Wave G enclosure has already been designed with computer aided design software and a production prototype has been built, by the manufacturer - and more can be mass produced, when required. It's the unit featured in the demonstration video and enclosed photographs - made from strong mild steel and has a powder coated black and white finish.

Currently we are using a 3D printed plastic case for the sequencer, and that's offered in the reward. A metal enclosure, at the time of writing has not been manufactured but if the project goal is reached, a mild steel case will be manufactured and offered as a reward for a small increase in price.

Power Supply

The buyer of the WaveG/Step Sequencer system will need to purchase or acquire 2 external 12 Volt DC (Direct Current), at least 500mA (milliamp) - 1 ampere power supply adaptor, which are regulated. One for the synthesizer, the other for the sequencer."

Dave Smith Instruments Unveils Prophet Rev2 Desktop Module - Exclusive Pics

DSI has a new desktop synth! The official press release follows.

"Legendary Designer to Ship Desktop Version of 16-Voice Poly Synth in October

CA—August 29, 2017—Dave Smith Instruments today announced that they will begin shipping a desktop module version of their popular Prophet Rev2 analog synthesizer in October. Like the keyboard version, it features two DCOs per voice, Curtis filters, plus two types of sequencers, digital effects, and other enhancements designed to make it even more powerful that its predecessor, the now-retired Prophet ’08.

As Dave Smith explained: 'In the three months since its release, the Prophet Rev2 keyboard has been embraced by the music community in a very big way; it’s already appearing on a significant number of recordings and major stage tours.' Added Smith: 'With 16 voices to stack and split, it not only sounds huge, but it has an incredible range of sounds available.'

The essence of the Prophet Rev2’s sound comes from two DCOs per voice with four waveshapes (sawtooth, triangle, sawtooth + triangle, and pulse), a sub-octave generator, and a 2/4 pole low-pass, resonant Curtis filter per voice. These are the same filters used not only in the Prophet ’08, but also in many classic instruments of the ’70s and ’80s. A new feature unique to the Prophet Rev2 is waveshape modulation. You can vary the “pulse width” of any of the four waveforms by manually dialing in a desired waveshape width or by using an LFO or other modulation source for continuously shifting timbre.

An effects section provides reverb, delays (standard and BBD), chorus, phase shifter, ring modulation, and distortion. In stacked or split voice mode, you can apply a different effect to each layer. Effects parameters can be modulated through the mod matrix, which is twice as extensive as its predecessor, with 8 individual slots and many more sources/destinations.

The new polyphonic step sequencer allows up to 64 steps and up to 6 notes per step. A different sequence can be created for each layer when working in stacked or split voice mode. The sequencer also functions as a modulation source, allowing you to create up to 4 different 16-step sequences for complex modulation. Sequences allow ties and rests, and can sync to an external MIDI clock. The arpeggiator features note repeats, re-latching, and can be synced to external MIDI clock, as well. Other improvments include a premium-quality, five-octave, semi-weighted keyboard with velocity and channel aftertouch, an integrated power supply, USB support, and a crisp OLED display.

'Apart from its awesome sound, a big part of the Rev2’s appeal is its ease of use, so we made sure that the desktop version retained all of the same front panel controls as the keyboard version. Whether you go for the keyboard or the desktop, the Rev2 is an amazing synth and an incredible musical workhorse,' said Dave Smith.

The Prophet Rev2 desktop module will be available in October of 2017 with a US MAP of $1,799. An 8-voice version will be available for $1,299 US MAP."

Desktop Hardware Version of SERUM in the works?

The top image is via @deadmau5 who mentions, "yeah yeah... you guys keep your skins :P"

The bottom image is of SERUM via XfferRecords (you can find previous posts featuring video demos of SERUM in the archives). You should be able to see the similarities between the hardware and software. The following is a quick recap on the software.

"The dream synthesizer did not seem to exist: a wavetable synthesizer with a truly high-quality sound, visual and creative workflow-oriented interface to make creating and altering sounds fun instead of tedious, and the ability to “go deep” when desired - to create / import / edit / morph wavetables, and manipulate these on playback in real-time.

IMPORT YOUR OWN AUDIO / CREATE CUSTOM WAVETABLES WITH EASE
Serum has a Wavetable editor built right in- you can create your own wavetables in a variety of ways. Import audio directly from audio files - Serum has a variety of methods and options for analyzing audio for breaking it apart into individual waveforms. You can import single-cycle wavetables of course, as well as many at once (with in-built sorting options, or manual re-ordering). Morph between various wavetables using standard linear interpolation (crossfading) or via harmonic/spectral morphing. Draw directly on the waveform, with optional grid-size snapping and a variety of shape tools. Generate or modify waveforms using FFT (additive). Create or process waveforms using formula functions. Processing menu options allow you to do the other tasks you would want, such as apply fades, crossfades, normalize, export, and much more..."

P.S. I created a new "Teasers" label for these moving forward. It's hard to believe I didn't see the need to create one before now... I added the label to the recent Behringer MS-101 post. Sometimes they are teasers, sometimes they are leaks. The label will apply to any gear not officially released.

New NNZD Music Toys: MOSTRO FM Synth

Published on Jul 12, 2017 Blanali

A new synth from a new maker, Neonized aka NNZD. The following are the details, Google translated, from Neonized:

"In recent years we have seen a small number of FM synthesizers appear in the market, that form of synthesis that dominated the eighties and thanks to its exponent the already classic Yamaha DX7 was part of the dominant sound in this decade. Their strings, their pianos and bass lines, are already part of the collective memory and have been present from pop and rock to soundtracks.

But the FM always had something that made difficult its permanence in the electronic music, the difficulty in its programming, and the little intuitive of its interface, the complexity of its sounds has always been one of its attractions, but in what to program it refers Has always been something of a dark art, it was not until the appearance of VST versions like the classic FM8 from Native Instruments that we were able to penetrate into their guts and exploit their possibilities.

With the appearance of some FM in recent years, such as the Korg Volca FM and the Yamaha Reface DX, some of these parameters have become more accessible, especially for the musician or composer who seeks to modulate the sound in an intuitive way As it does in the usual subtractive synthesizers, and above all in direct, in order to give a greater expressiveness to the instrument and also to music.

Synthesizer fm This is where the MOSTRO appears, made by OSS (Outer Space Sounds) a Start Up born in Barcelona, but with a "foot" in Medellin (Colombia), and that is currently in prototype, but is in the last Stage before launching into a Kickstarter to have a commercial production. This small FM has a polyphony of 4 voices, LFO, Sub Oscillator plus a Delay and an included Glide, and most important, control in potentiometers of these parameters, which gives the flexibility and expressiveness of a conventional noun synthesizer, Even within the unpredictability that is usually the FM synthesis. Its size makes it portable, and although it still depends on being connected to a power outlet, this does not prevent it from being desirable in a live Setup where it can be controlled or controlled from its MIDI connections.

I had the opportunity to explore his sound, basically in a couple of small improvisations, one of them sequencing it externally. In the videos that are at the end of this article you can hear a little sound and precisely the malleability of this thanks to its controls, and that immediately made me think about their possibilities in the context of the live. Possibilities that in the version that will be launched finally will be many more to include the possibility of loopear internally as well as 4 CV Inputs and 1 CV Gate In, which immediately includes it in a set of analog synthesizers or even by its format, within a Eurorack!"

New Roland Boutique SE-02 Analog Synthesizer - Designed by Studio Electronics

Published on Jun 20, 2017 RolandChannel

I believe discussions on the joint project began two years ago back at NAMM 2015. While there, I ran into Studio Electronics at the Moog booth who asked me to please keep it under wraps for obvious reason. Yes I can keep a secret. It's great to see this collaboration come to life. Congrats to both Studio Electronics and Roland!

Update: price is apparently only $499.

"The Roland SE-02 Analog Synthesizer is a collaborative effort from Roland and Studio Electronics, that uses authentic discrete circuitry to create an analog synth with a distinctly American sound.

The Roland SE-02 synthesizer has all of the warm, rounded bass tones and smooth, glassy leads that you would expect from its all-analog architecture.

But a new generation of synthesists, producers and musicians requires a new sound, and the Roland SE-02 goes far beyond into inspiring sonic territories.

Explore the power of its performance sequencer, over 500 expertly-crafted preset patches, its complex oscillator and filter modulations with XMOD and FEEDBACK, and in-built delay. Discover thick textures, percussive patches and ethereal effects for a whole new dimension to a classic sound.

The Roland SE-02 Analog Synthesizer is the first product in the new Roland Boutique Designer Series. This series, debuting in a partnership with Studio Electronics, a leader in excellence and ingenuity in analog synthesizer design since 1988. Makers of the revered MidiMini, SE-1, ATC-1, Omega 8, CODE 8, Boomstar, and Tonestar. Premium quality musical instruments hand built in the USA."

New Nozoïd MMO-3 Digital, Semi-modular, Monophonic but Stereo Synthesizer.

MMO-3 presentation from Nozoid on Vimeo.

The MMO-3 might look familiar. The design is very similar to Nozoïd's previous synths, the OSC-2 and MMO-4.

The following are some details and pics via Nozoïd where you'll find additional demos and details.

"MMO-3 is a digital, semi-modular, monophonic but stereo synthesizer. Built around various types of modulation synthesis (AM, FM, PM, WS), this synthesizer is mostly dedicated to atonal sound generation. From fat drones, glitchy electronic patterns or percussive noise, the MMO-3 offers rich and complex timbre control.

"Unlike most FM synthesizers, the MMO-3 is not limited to a specific modulation routing. All 3 oscillators can be modulated by all other oscillators or LFOs. Modulation parameters are accessible thanks to 9 knobs for an accurate and continuous adjustment of the timbre.

Moreover, it’s not only a FM synth : it also offers Phase Modulation, Amplitude Modulation and a custom Wave Shaper modulation technique where an oscillator amplitude can be amplified prior to a wave-shaper in order to add harmonics without frequency variation.

Also, a joystick allows for easy manipulation of modulations, for a fast and expressive control of the sound.

What is inside?
30 control knobs
A joystick to control modulation parameters
3 oscillators
FM, AM, PM and Wave Shaping modulation
3 LFOs with complex waveform
1 ADSR
1 MIX (3 channels, stereo)
1 dual VCA
1 dual distortion
A very powerful digital connection matrix to control oscillator modulations
2 octaves keyboard with portamento
1 Stereo audio line IN
1 Stereo audio line OUT
1 MIDI input (note / velocity / pitch wheel / control change)
1 analog CV IN and 1 GATE IN"
