An Ocean in Thyme // No Input Ambient Music // Mooer Ocean Machine + Bastl Thyme #TTNM

Published on Mar 18, 2020 THE TUESDAY NIGHT MACHINES

"It's been a while since I last made some no input music with the Mooer Ocean Machine and Bastl Thyme ...

♥ SUPPORT: http://bit.ly/ttnm-support

The Ocean Machine is a straightforward looper, dual delay and reverb guitar effect pedal. Its left channel output is connected the Bastl Instruments Thyme robot-controlled digital tape delay. The Thyme's right channel output goes back into the Ocean Machine's right channel input. The Thyme's left channel output goes into the audio recorder.

This creates a feedback loop between the two devices, resulting in audible self-oscillation, which can be looped and shaped via the effects, similar to a normal synthesizer waveform. Only that we don't need a synth at all.

The video was recorded in one take, without any other sound sources or effects, apart from the Ocean Machine and Thyme.

It's fun! try it at home!

Here's a tutorial for the Ocean Machine alone: [posted below]

... and a no input mixing tutorial: [posted here]"

HORROR DRONE!!! Mooer Ocean Machine No Input Noise Music! #TTNM

Published on Apr 17, 2019 THE TUESDAY NIGHT MACHINES

"At Thomann's Synth Reactor 2019 I finally got the chance to play with an Ocean Machine, after having it on my wish list for a long time (video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gylcx...). After that, Mooer Audio were kind enough to send me a pedal home to dig deeper into it. I don't have a guitar though, so I needed to come up with another way to use this thing and I think I actually found one that is way more fun :D

At your own risk, plug one Ocean Machine audio output into your speaker/mixer/recorder. Plug the other audio output into one of the Ocean Machine's audio inputs. Plug in power and hold on to your hat!

... well, start with all three mixer knobs at zero, obviously. Then slowly add feedback by adding delays and reverb. Short delay times add high pitched sounds, while long delay times add lower pitched sounds. Play with different delay and reverb types and don't forget to let the looper's continuous audio overdub running. Also, use the reverse and half-speed playback features!"

The Thyme is an effects processor that is best described as a sequenceable robot operated digital tape machine. With a lot of parameters at hand it enables the exploration of all the time based effects and the vast space in between their classical multi-effects categories (delay, phaser, reverb, chorus, pitch shifter, multi-tap delay, tape delay, tremolo, vibrato, compressor) and in stereo! Each of the 9 different parameters (Tape Speed, Delay Coarse & Fine, Feedback, Filter, extra heads Spacing and Levels, Dry Wet Mix and Volume) has a dedicated, very flexible modulation source – called the Robot – which can be phased out differently for left and right channel to create psychedelic new sound effects. The Robot can either be an LFO with many different waveshapes, external CV source or an envelope follower to enable effects reacting to dynamics. On top of everything there are 8 buttons to select a preset and those presets can be sequenced by a built in meta sequencer. The Sequencer, the Robots and the Delay can be synchronised to external or internal clock. Thyme interfaces with MIDI, analog clock and CV, it has a switchable stereo/mono input, stereo output, headphone output with level and foot switch jack."

LEFT SIDE:
Mooer Ocean Machine ambient guitar pedal connected to the Bastl Instruments Thyme digital tape machine in a feedback loop. So one Ocean Machine's output goes back into its own input and the other output goes into the Thyme's input.

One of the Thyme's outputs goes back into the Ocean Machine second input and the other Thyme output finally goes into the Zoom R16 audio recorder.

Then I play with both units' audio looper and delay and reverb effects to layer a wild ambient space drone sound.

RIGHT SIDE:

Microvolt 3900 Through Thyme Delay

Published on Jun 18, 2018 Perfect Circuit Audio

"We wanted to test out the new Pittsburgh Modular Microvolt 3900 and the Bastl Thyme, so we figured we should make a video with both of them together. The Microvolt 3900 is a semi-modular synthesizer with a single oscillator, wavefolder, filter and VCA with dynamic response, as well as an LFO, function generator and ADSR for modulation. The Bastl Thyme is a digital delay which isn't a tape emulation, but is modeled after a tape delay, a kind of digital tape. The Thyme also has "robots" which can modulate many of the settings on the machine.

Bastl Instruments NEWS at Superbooth 2017

via Bastl Instruments:

"We have a lot of exciting news to share at Superbooth 2017 - finally our flagship effects processor Thyme comes to life! Peter Edwards a.k.a. Casper Electronics will show his new invention: a portable, experimental synth called the softPop. We have a new eurorack module drum pad interface Kong. Dude is a new portable mixer with concept of modularity in mind. We are starting to offer our trusty microGranny as a DIY kit and we will also show the aluminum panel designs for our Eurorack line of modules for the first time. And as the Bastl community is growing we have more updates in the wide range of activities that we make, too.

The Thyme effects processor [see here for a Superbooth video] will finally scrap off its vaporware label at Superbooth, where we will give the first public demo in two years after announcing an early prototype back in 2015. The Thyme is best described as a sequenceable robot operated digital tape machine. With a lot of parameters at hand it enables the exploration of all the time based effects and the vast space in between their classical multi-effects categories! Each of the 9 different parameters (Tape Speed, Delay Coarse & Fine, Feedback, Filter, extra heads Spacing and Levels, Dry Wet Mix and Volume) has a dedicated and very flexible modulation source - called the Robot - which can be phased out differently for left and right channel to create psychedelic new sound effects. The Robot can either be an LFO with many different waveshapes, external CV source or an envelope follower to enable effects reacting to dynamics. On top of everything there are 8 buttons to select a preset and those presets can be sequenced by a built in meta sequencer. The Thyme is ready for production and pricing and availability will be announced in May 2017.

softPop is a playfully organic, semi-modular light and sound synthesizer with wide variety of sounds: from random dripping water pops to heavy subtractive basslines. Its fully analog core consisting of heavily feedbacked system of dual triangle-core oscillator, state variable filter and sample and hold is played through an intuitive interface of 6 faders that provides countless combinations which can be explored by anyone. It can also process external audio thru the filter while using the envelope follower to intuitively synchronise to the incoming signal. The analog soul is enhanced by a quantize feature (auto-tune) and pattern generator with two memories A and B. For adventurous and courageous souls there is a secret chamber in the back for hacking & modding. We will launch the pre-orders in a couple of weeks with price somewhere below 300 eur.

KONG

The expressiveness of a drumming performance and the freedom of a eurorack modular synthesizer finally have a dedicated interface! Kong is a dual drumpad interface that amplifies the drumpad signal and converts it to trigger and velocity CV signals. The Gain knob helps to amplify signal from any drumpad and serves as a sensitivity setting for the velocity, too. The whole architecture is fully analog and the Velocity CV signal is generated by sample and hold circuit with extremely low drift which makes it perfect for controlling crazy patches by hitting a bunch of drumpads. Kong is available NOW for preorder from noise.kitchen for 109 eur without tax. Preorders will ship in June.

Dude is a portable battery operated 5 channel audio mixer with mini jack inputs and output. Each channel has a dedicated mute button and up to +20dB gain to boost weak signals or saturate line level signals. It is a monophonic mixer but can drive your headphones and therefore its perfect for small portable rigs or submixes on stage. It runs on four AA batteries (or external powersupply) and it is almost as small as its batterypack. Because each channel has enough gain that it can be turned into tone generator by feeding the output back to an input thru a passive eq and other simple circuits. The first batch of the Dude is available NOW from noise.kitchen for 75 eur excluding tax.

microGranny2 as a DIY kit

We have announced the microGranny2 about 3 years ago and it still is very popular machine. After several updates we can finally offer it as a DIY kit! microGranny is a granular sampler with built in microphone that operates samples on a microSD card. It is available NOW from noise.kitchen for 130 eur excl. tax!

Aluminum panels for Eurorack modules

We dedicated a lot of effort to make our wooden panels look and feel great. Now after quite some requests from people we finally found a manufacturing partner for the aluminium panels that meets our high expectations. We are using silkscreen printing in between of the anodizing phases. This method bakes the color perfectly into the material making the colour full, rich and yet very durable!

The modules will be gradually available from selected retailers from 1st May 2017. Note: the wooden panel version of the modules will NOT be discontinued

Bastl THYME Live-Looping Tutorial (it's awesome!) #TTNM

Published on Oct 18, 2018 The Tuesday Night Machines

"Here's a live-looping tutorial for the Bastl Instruments THYME tape delay. MORE INFO BELOW :)

---------

PixelNoises Synth T-Shirts by The Tuesday Night Machines:
https://shop.spreadshirt.co.uk/pixeln...

---------

In this video I'm showing how to use the THYME's freeze feature to create tape loops, overdub effects onto them and punch-in new audio, all while the THYME is running synced to an analog clock form the LepLoop Arpopone, which also provides a little beat.

The THYME's freeze knob will record incoming audio to the virtual tape loop for the length of the delay time parameter (coarse and fine knobs). If you enable sync, then this will be a length quantized to the clock, i.e. it should loop in sync with the beat. When freeze mode is on, the levels knob will blend in the extra tape heads (spread knob) and when you turn it past 50%, then it will actually overdub those sounds onto the tape loop. You can use this in combination with the filter cutoff as well to record filter sweeps onto the loop.

By quickly disabling and enabling the freeze mode in time with the beat, you can punch-in (overwrite) external audio again, splitting up your loop. Add pitch shifting from the tape speed knob and you've got awesome possibilities for creating fun loops!

... and then try out the plenty of automation and sequencing features of the THYME too. It's wild! Of course you don't have to be 100% wet on the output like in this video, so you can still mix in non-looping external audio too! Hahahaha!!!"

Stereo Poly-Expressive Ambient Music (w/ Linnstrument + MicroMonsta + Bastl Thyme) #TTNM

Audio gear used:

- Bastl Instruments Thyme Digital Tape Delay Simulator

The greenish, middle MicroMonsta patch uses aftertouch to control the filter cutoff frequency of the sound all the way from zero, so by gentle pressing a key, one can smoothly fade the sound in and out. The timbre/Y axis adds ring modulation which makes it very crunchy and wild at times, together with the internal chorus FX.

The pinkish and orange patches are panned to the left and right a little bit respectively and only subtly use expressive controls apart from the obvious polyphonic pitch slides.

The Bastl Thyme adds delay and roominess to the sounds."

Bastl Instruments New Modules, Superbooth, Thyme is Shipping & Further Updates

via Bastl Instruments

"We are really excited to share some news from Superbooth! Come to see us and our booth E240. First we are announcing two new eurorack modules - the Timber - dual waveshaper and the 1983 - MIDI to CV interface from the future with creative voice allocation and automatic tuning capabilities. Peter Edwards a.k.a. Casper Electronics will preview another Bastl collaboration on his forthcoming product line of Eurorack modules! We are finally shipping THYME effects processors and we have couple of new music releases at our Nona Records and the week after Superbooth we are hosting a touring festival from Prague to Brno.

Timber - dual waveform lumberjack is a flexible wave shaping module that can produce rich timbres by adding harmonics to any signal. It has 2 different wave shaping circuits that are controlled by the same parameters. Both shapers are classic Serge inspired designs that have been heavily modified and enhanced with a voltage controlled crossfader. The fader can be used to fade between the two shapers or either one and the clean input signal. Video introduction

1983 is a polyphonic MIDI to CV interface with creative voice allocation and automatic tuning capabilities. There are 4 channels of CV and GATE outputs that can be configured to various layouts. Each channel is also able to LISTEN to the simple waveform of an oscillator and with a single press of the TUNE button it magically makes everything play in tune. The UPDATE and WINDOW inputs allow creative mangling of the voice allocation and open harmonic content to be animated in modular environment. The TRANSPOSE and GLIDE jacks open up the module for further creativity.

New product line of eurorack modules is coming soon from Casper Electronics. At Superbooth Peter Edwards will preview his prototypes which are highly influenced by his signature gestural performances using experimental mixer techniques with loads of feedback and overdrive. Now with everything under complex CV control and fine-tuned for modular environments.

After a long wait we are finally shipping our beloved THYME - The Robot Operated Digital Tape Machine. This certainly is the most advanced instrument we have ever created and it opens huge sonic possibilities of real-time sound manipulation. We have released a new video.

Pricing and availability:

- Timber - available now at noise.kitchen for 170 EUR excl. tax , currently in production, ships in July 2018

- 1983 - available latest in September 2018 with price around 250 EUR excl. tax

- Bastl & Casper Eurorack modules - available later in 2018

- THYME - available now and shipping for 439 EUR excl. tax, thru Bastl dealers"

THYME Effects Processor Now Available

Published on Oct 4, 2017 Bastl Instruments

"The Thyme is an effects processor that is best described as a sequenceable robot operated digital tape machine. With a lot of parameters at hand it enables the exploration of all the time based effects and the vast space in between their classical multi-effects categories and in stereo!"

You can find previous posts featuring Bastl Instruments THYTME here.

And the press release:

"THYME is out! The sequenceable robot operated digital tape machine?!

We are excited to finally announce that Thyme - the effects processor of our dreams - is now available to the world! We started working on the machine more than 3 years ago and we can proudly say it is our most ambitious project yet and sets new standards of quality and craziness. The wooden sides and mat black aluminum panels with laser engraved graphics are beautiful and durable. Our search for the perfect housing caused extensive delays but we can confidently say it was worth the wait! From the first announcement at Musik Messe 2015 we have reworked the hardware architecture from top to bottom to meet the high quality demands of today's musicians.

The Thyme is an effects processor that is best described as a sequenceable robot operated digital tape machine. With loads of parameters to tweak it invites users to explore a wide range of time based audio effects as well as the vast space in between their classical multi-effects categories (delay, phaser, reverb, chorus, pitch shifter, multi-tap delay, tape delay, tremolo, vibrato, compressor) and it’s all in stereo! Each of the 9 different parameters (Tape Speed, Delay Coarse & Fine, Feedback, Filter, extra heads Spacing and Levels, Dry/Wet Mix and Volume) has a dedicated modulation source – called the Robot – which can be adjusted separately for left and right channels to create exciting new sound effects. The Robot can function as a multi shaped LFO, an external CV source or an envelope follower which uses the external audio signal as a control source. On top of all that there are 8 buttons for selecting presets which can then be sequenced by a built in meta sequencer. The Robots, the sequencer and the Delay can be synchronised to external or internal clock. Thyme interfaces with MIDI, analog clock and CV, it has a switchable stereo/mono input, stereo output, adjustable headphone output and a footswitch jack.

THYME - 20 SOUNDS - NO TALKING

Published on May 2, 2018 Bastl Instruments

"In this video we show some sound examples of THYME our robot operated digital tape machine.
All sounds are recorded directly from thymes stereo output. The examples feature varrious
settings resulting in different textures and rhythmic delay patterns. Certain parameters
are being changed over time by thymes internal automation units - the robots. The changes
can happen slower or in the lower audio domain synced to clock or in free run. Settings
are saved as "sounds" which can be recalled sequentially. THYME can make a delay sound like
its a totally independent track in the music and thus can be used in a very creative way."
