Perfect Circuit Audio (RSS)

"The ED102 is ideal if you want to upgrade your synthesizer by adding on other synthesizer units having different kinds of keyboard control voltage and trigger signals.

The built-in, fully adjustable log amp, anti-log amp, and trigger processor ensure complete system flexibility and compatibility between any presently voltage controlled synthesizer. In order to get the most out of your ED102, please read this owner's manual carefully before use. The ED102 Hz/V/Oct Converter is designed for the purpose of connecting V/Octave synthesizers with Hz/V synthesizers. This sophisticated signal processor greatly enhances the performance possibilities of your synthesizer.

Among presently available music synthesizers, there are two different types of control system used for the VCO (voltage controlled oscillator) and EG (envelope generator). One of these systems is used by Korg and Yamaha; the other is employed by every other synthesizer manufacturer. The ED102 provides you with a way to change the control signals of one system into the control signals used in the other system. In this way, it acts as an interface so that any two synthesizers can be used together, provided that the synthesizers are equipped with the conventional input and output jacks for control
voltage and trigger or gate signals.

CV systems

In the Hz/V system, the VCO oscillator frequency is proportional to the control voltage whilst in the V/Octave systems the oscillator frequency changes one octave for every one volt (1V) change in the control voltage. Since an increase of one octave means that the frequency is doubled, each increase of one volt in the control voltage means a doubling of VCO frequency.

The problem with the V/Octave system is that it must employ a log amp in order to double the frequency for each one volt increase in the control voltage. Log amp circuitry can, unfortunately, be very unstable because of its sensitivity to temperature changes. This causes so many problems that most professional musicians automatically assume that synthesizers always have unstable pitch. When Korg developed their first Korg synthesizer, they decided that such a circuit was entirely unsuitable for a musical instrument. So, instead they invented their own unique, patented circuit in which the keyboard voltage (which is the VCO control voltage) itself doubles for each one octave increase in pitch.

Four Sections

Log Amp: This changes a Hz/V type keyboard CV (control voltage) output into a V/Octave type of CV. Use the Log Amp to change the control signal from a Hz/V synt
hesizer into a signal you can use with a V/OCT synthesizer.

Hz/V input (0 ~ 15V)
Oct/V Output (-12V ~ +12V)
Frequency knob: Bi-polar offset of frequency
Width knob: Bi-polar control of width of the output
Antilog Amp: This changes a V/Octave type of keyboard CV output in to a Hz/V type of CV. Use this Antilog Amp when you want to control a Hz/V synthesizer, such as a Korg, by means of a unit that uses the V/OCT system.

Oct/V input (-4V ~ +4V)
Hz/V output (-12V ~ +12V)
Frequency knob: Bi-polar offset of frequency
Width knob: Bi-polar control of width of the output
Adding Amp: This can be used for mixing control voltage signals or sound signals. When not plugged into an outlet, the adding amp operates as if -5V and +5V inputs were connected to its two channels. Therefore, depending on how you set up your equipment, you can also use the adding amp as a voltage supply, or to shift a control voltage to a higher or lower value, and so forth.

Two inputs each with level knob
Mix output
In 1 normalled to a +5V DC signal
In 2 normalled to a -5V DC signal
Trigger\Gate: This lets you change either type of trigger signals, S-Trig or V-Trig, into the kind of trigger signal you need by means of the Reverse switch.

2 Identical sections featuring:
Input (Vth = +2.5V)
Output (0V ~ +15V)

Korg MS-20m Monophonic Synthesizer Kit and SQ-1 Step Sequencer Video & MS-20m Details

Uploaded on Jan 15, 2015 Korg

"The new MS-20m and SQ-1 open a whole world of analog experimentation. Connect, sync, and sequence all your gear with the flexible SQ-1 Step Sequencer, and take the famous MS-20 sound to new levels with the FM and sync features of the tabletop MS-20m"

Note the SQ-1 comes included with the MS-20m kit. The MS-20m has a selectable filter switch on the front panel while the original MS-20 kit had to be set internally. There are number of additional improvements outlined directly below. [Details on the SQ-1 just posted here]. Fun little bit of trivia is you can see SN 000001 on the back image below. Often there is no serial number in promo shots. Thought it was kind of neat and adds to the history of whomever this particular unit ends up with.  Also note it's lower case "m".

First, the enhancements over the original:

"Carrying on the distinctive synthesis of the MS-20, the MS-20M features additional improvements in both looks and functionality. Extending to detailed aspects of the design, the sound-creating possibilities have been dramatically boosted, making this sound module even more attractive and raising it to an even higher state of completion.

SYNC ON/OFF switch allows oscillator sync
Oscillator sync forcibly synchronizes the phase of VCO1 to the phase of VCO2, producing a powerful sound with complex overtones.

FM ON/OFF switch allows frequency modulation
The VCO1 waveform can be used to frequency-modulate the VCO2 waveform (FM or cross modulation), creating vibrato effects or extreme metallic sounds.

FILTER TYPE switch lets you select two types of filter
The original MS-20 used two different VCF circuits depending on the date of production, and now you can choose either of these with a single switch. The earlier model (REV.1) has an aggressive character with distinctive distortion and self-oscillation, while the later model (REV.2) has minimal noise and a sweet, mellow sound.

PWM IN jack allows pulse width modulation
The PWM provided on the MS-10 of the past is now possible on the MS-20. By cyclically modulating the pulse width of the VCO1 square wave, you can obtain a distinctively fat sound.

EG2 NORMAL OUT jack expands your sound-creating potential
In addition to the previous EG2 REV OUT, we've provided a normal EG2 OUT that varies in the range of 0V--+5V.

TRIG SW button lets you conveniently audition the sound
Even on this keyboardless unit, the trigger switch lets you smoothly audition the sound while you edit the parameters.

Numerous jacks have been added to the MS-20M, letting you connect it with any type of device.

All CV/GATE specifications are supported: Hz/V and V/Oct, S-Trig and V-Trig
From the time when it was originally produced, the CV standard used by the MS-20 was not the commonly used V/Oct standard, but rather the Hz/V standard that provided superior pitch stability. However, like the MS-50 of that time, the MS-20M Kit provides CV IN jacks for both the Hz/V standard and the V/Oct standard.

For the TRIG IN jack that receives gate signals, jacks are provided not only for the S-Trig standard as on the original MS-20, but also for the widely used V-Trig standard. The MS-20M Kit supports any sequencer or controller that's equipped with CV/GATE output.

Three JUNCTION jacks
Three sets of the junction jacks once provided by the MS-50 are also provided. Output signals from the SQ-1 step sequencer or similar device can be converted from a mini-phone plug to a 1/4" phone plug, or those signals can be distributed to multiple destinations for a variety of possibilities.

MIDI IN connector and USB connector
There's a MIDI IN connector that can receive note messages, and a USB-MIDI connector that can transmit and receive note messages. You can perform using a taktile or other MIDI keyboard, or perform sequences that you've recorded on your DAW.

And the general description for the archives:

"The evolution of the MS-20, delivering even more powerful synthesis.
A module that you assemble, with a step sequencer included.
The classic MS-20 analog synthesizer that appeared in 1978 has been reborn as a perfect reproduction of the original circuit, first in 2013 as the mini-sized MS-20 mini, and now in 2014 as the MS-20 Kit that you can assemble yourself.

The MS-20 Mini and the Kit were designed by the engineers who developed the original MS-20. At its introduction, the designers of the MS-20 wanted to create an interesting product quickly; the result was an enormous hit, but the designers felt there were actually a few things left undone. Now, after 37 years, the user-assembled MS-20M Kit has been completed.

GSE KVP Pitch Calibration Procedure w/ Korg MS-20 + Keystep Pro

gstormelectro

"Audio + Video by G-Storm Electro c. 2021

In this video I will be showing how to calibrate my KVP (Korg Voltage Processor) module.
While I test and calibrate the tuning of all modules, re-calibration may become necessary when the settings get too far out of whack.
I will give some helpful tips as well as a detailed step-by-step explanation of the calibration process.

This video is of a technical nature.
If you're wanting basic information about the KVP and its uses, be sure to check out my other video [posted here]

Timestamps
0:00 Intro, Helpful Tips, Setting Up the Keystep Pro
KEYSTEP PRO: Global Setting CV Base Note = C-2
2:28 V/OCT to Hz/V Calibration
Be sure to trim FREQ with the "low C" note
And trim WIDTH with the "high C" note.
7:01 Hz/V to V/OCT Calibration
Be sure to trim FREQ with the 'A' note
And trim WIDTH with the "high C" note

Keep in mind the KVP is an analog signal converter, controlling an analog MS-20 synthesizer.
And when converting Hz/V to V/OCT, we may be also using the MS-20 to control yet another analog VCO device.
Given these things, the pitch won't be absolutely perfect - but the base frequency and tracking should be well within musically acceptable margins."

Feed External VCOs into the Korg MS-20 Synth using KVP [Quick Tip]

gstormelectro

"Audio and Video by G-Storm Electro c. 2020

Quick Tip using the KVP to send external VCOs into the MS-20.
KVP stands for Korg Voltage Processor, and is derived from the vintage MS-02 voltage processor no longer in production.
As you're already aware, you can use KVP to convert eurorack pitch (v/oct) to the Korg standard (hz/v).
And use your sequencer to control the MS-20....

But what about the other (Korg hz/v)-to-(Euro v/oct) pitch converter?
Sure! Use the MS-20 to control your eurorack VCOs.
Take it only one step further to send the external VCO output INTO the
MS-20 external input.
To add more VCOs to the MS-20 oscillators for big fat sound.
I will show you how to patch it up.
It works for the vintage MS-20, the MS-20 Mini reissue as well as the Behringer K-2.
And any manufacturer synth using the Hz/v standard.

Some shaky cam footage, I threw this one together in haste...but don't hate :D Hit that LIKE, COMMENT & SUBSCRIBE now.

Some fx added
Delay: Timefactor
Reverb: Big Sky

KVP and many other cool eurorack modules are available in my Reverb Store

Metasonix TM-3 SN80 Tube VCO SN TM3-80

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This VCO has a very unique sound and tracks nearly 2 octaves with a HZ/volt CV source, But be warned, it is not perfectly scaled and is not temperature stable. That's not a defect its just the way it is, If you want pussy trance anthem pads or want to play Mozart then don't buy this. It's definitely a raw meat kind of aural experience, chewy and tough.

The METASONIX TM-3 consists of two thyratron tube sawtooth oscillators, which are wired in parallel but may be offset with their individual front-panel tuning controls. Furthermore, soft sync is available, to force oscillator 2 to track with oscillator 1.

The waveform produced by the 2D21/5727 thyratrons is unique and distinctive--a very imperfect sawtooth. It's the kind of sound that screams "VINTAGE", because the only other instruments that produce it are vintage ones--the Mixtur-Trautonium, the Univox, and some 1950s electronic organs.

Furthermore, there is a suboctave circuit, which adds a square wave one octave below oscillator 2. It includes short pulses an octave above, for a distinctive sound. And you can mess with the STABILITY control to get unique effects--because the suboctave divider is made of two neon lamps, and NOT a transistor flip-flop. Except for the CV driver, the TM-3 is all tubes.

And unlike most other synthesizer VCOs, the TM-3 is so sensitive that it is easily used for FM sound effects--simply by driving either CV input with a line-level audio signal. Both inputs are DC coupled and highly sensitive. The result is a unique, and very extreme, form of signal distortion.

The TM-3 is a Hz/V VCO, meaning it follows a linear characteristic. Each successive octave requires doubling the control voltage. As shipped, the first octave is swept from 0 volts to 0.25 volts, the next from 0.25 to 0.75 volts, etc. Although not standard to the present modular-synth industry, this scheme simplifies the TM-3's use as a signal processor, and avoids the use of an exponential converter circuit, which can drift with temperature or cause other problems. TM-3's CV control is compatible with vintage Korg MS series and Yamaha CS series synthesizers.

Technical specifications

Output signal max approx 10 v p-p. Capable of approximately 66 Hz to 526 Hz. Center pitch setting with tuning knobs and 0.0v input gives approx. low C (66 Hz). Actual range obtained depends upon individual thyratron tubes installed--about 2 1/2 octaves is typical. May be controlled from any MIDI-CV converter having Hz/V capability, including the Synhouse MIDIJACK II, Philip Rees Little MCV, Kenton Pro-Solo and Pro-2000, and Encore Expressionist.

Power input 10v AC to 12v AC, 50/60 Hz, 1 amp max at idle--derived from an appropriate plug-in AC adapter. Inputs: two 1/4" phone jacks for CV or audio (they mix linearly). Output: 1/4" phone jack, audio, mono, 50k ohm impedance.

Dimensions: 7 1/2" (192mm) x 4 3/8" (112mm) x 3" (77mm). Weight not including accessories approx. 5 pounds (2.2 kg).

This is used electronic gear in great shape (low hours) from a smoke free home studio. I test it before it ships, but it is non returnable and there is no guarantee other than it will not arrive DOA. Rock On!!"

Metasonix R-55 Thyratron VCO Vacuum Tube Oscillator Eurorack Module

bigcitymusic special edition on the bottom.

"For Sale: (1) Metasonix R-55 Thyratron VCO synthesizer module in eurorack modular format. This was a limited edition module that was only sold at Big City Music and is not longer available. Includes M3 screws and power supply ribbon cable. From Metasonix:

The R-55 is essentially one of the VCOs in the legendary S-1000 Wretch Machine in a 22U Eurorack module. It produces the notorious "sharkfin" sawtooth waveform of thyratron VCOs, replete with the weird pitch variations and apparent モnoisinessヤ of a thyratron oscillator.
Turn up the overdrive control, and the oscillator output clips the output amplifier pentode tube, for a unique soft-clipped square-wave sound. The simplicity of the R-55 will fool you--its behavior is erratic and weird, it always sounds broken, and the waveform is deviated in every way. You don't even need to feed it Hz/v CV; just run a square-wave or pulse signal from a conventional VCO into a pitch CV input, and it will force the R-55 to track along with the other VCO.

KORG MS02

Title link takes you to a couple more shots pulled via this auction. Not the best, but you don't see these often.

Details:
"Here we have a Korg MS-02 Interface in PERFECT WORKING ORDER. Sorry for the out of focus photos. Cosmetically in GREAT shape, a 9 out of 10. No particular blemish stands out as worth mentioning, just some occassional surface scratches and smudge marks, but again, in great cosmetic shape, especially for a 30 year old item. I have the original manual and will send that as well.

From the manual:

"For complete connection compatibility between synthesizers.
The MS-02 is ideal if you want to upgrade your synthesizer by adding on other synthesizer units having different kinds of keyboard control voltage and trigger signals. The built-in, fully adjustable log amp, anti-log amp, and trigger processor ensure complete system flexibility and compatibility between any presently voltage controlled synthesizer."

Meaning, you can use this unit to connect any major analog synth with CV in/outs to any other synth with CV ins/outs. Hugely useful for connecting your Moog to your MS 20, or your ARP to your MS 10, or whatever you desire. Crazy Analog synth sounds possible!

Furthermore, it has juntion points on the bottom, which is hugely useful for modular patching. For instance, on the korg ms 20, it only allows you to patch one parameter to only one other paramater, but with the junctions, you simply connect your parameter in, and have the possibility to patch it to two, or even THREE different other patch points. This doubles or even TRIPLES your possibilities!!! So useful!

Audio and Video by G-Storm Electro c. 2019

Today I am introducing my new module - the KVP.
KVP is a pitch and gate CV processor that makes the MS-20 compatable w/ Eurorack (v/oct).
It works for the vintage MS-20, the MS-20 Mini reissue as well as the Behringer K-2.
And any manufacturer synth using the Hz/v standard.

Percussion: Basimilus Iteritas Alter
Sequencing: Arturia Beatstep Pro
Delay: Timefactor
Reverb: Big Sky

Recorded direct to Tascam DR-05.

Module description:

So you want to control your vintage MS-20 / MS-20 Mini / Behringer K-2 (and more!) from Euro modules.
But when you do, it sounds weird – the pitch is wayyy not right.
And the gate triggers… forget-about-it. KVP can help with that.

KVP can take Euro pitch voltages (v/oct), and process them to standards used by Korg.
Pretty much any manufacturer that uses the Hz/v standard.
It can also do the other way around so you can control your v/oct synths and Euro modules pitch from the MS-20.
Dialing in the frequency and tracking width is a breeze using multi-turn trim pots accessible from the front panel.
KVP will generate about 3 octaves of tracking (C1 to C4) - same as the MS-20 keybed.

KVP also has 2 processors for handling gate signals as well.
Slide the TYPE switch to the right (convert) and it can convert Korg to Euro gates or the other way around.
Slide the type switch to the left (no conversion) and the same gate that goes in is what comes out.
