"This video has a little bit of everything... lol It features a quick look behind the scenes at the Moog Factory in Asheville, NC. We have a little history of the Theremin, and a peek of one being made in the factory... all the while PRIMUS jamming in the Moog Sound Lab. There is even a rare little jam with Les Claypool on electric drums and Jay Lane playing "Who's got the funk" on Les's acoustic bass! As I said... this video has everything! :)

The great folks at Moog Music were AMAZING! Asheville was AMAZING! Primus was AMAZING! Les Claypool is ALWAYS AMAZING (he even took a minute to pose for a picture goo.gl/pSisp )!

Thanks everyone... What an overall AMAZING time! :)"

"This is the Ruin Electronics CDS-2 (Compact Drone Synth). This is a one of a kind instrument. It was professionally built and designed by Ruin. The unit has been built into a vintage transistor radio case. Faux wood grain, chrome, and brushed aluminum give it a classy retro look. The CDS-2 is new; no previous owners.

The CDS-2 is a 100% Analog synthesizer in a sturdy case with a fashionable carrying handle. The CDS-2 is a two voice drone synthesizer with CV inputs for pitch and filter frequency. The CDS-2 is not only a Drone and noise Synthesizer, but a sound effects generator. The CDS-2 is excellent for use with sequencers and other modular gear. The filters sound very vocal and organic when in bandpass mode and nice and chunky in lowpass. Paired with the thick oscillators, some strange alien vocalizations can be made. The CDS-2 offers a wide range of sounds with its excellent compliment of functions. There is no other drone/noise/experimental synth out there like this, especially in such a compact package! Despite being small, there is still plenty of room to use the controls so no play-ability is sacrificed.

Space sounds, crackles, hums, percussion, alien speech, warbles, zaps, clangs, bangs, basslines, sequencer runs, rhythms. This is a great unit for performance, sampling, or just plain old fun!

The units approximate measurements are:

7.5" width x 3" depth x 5.5" height

The unit features:

2x Square/Triangle waveform VCOs (Voltage Controlled Oscillators) with individual tuning per oscillator. The oscillators go from subsonic to ultrasonic with a twist of the control.
2x Triangle/Square waveform LFOs (Low Frequency Oscillators) for modulation. The LFOs can be routed to either the VCF or VCO. Each LFO has a Depth and Speed control and a switch to select either VCF or VCO modulation.
Bandpass/Lowpass VCF (Voltage Controlled Filter). The filter is extremely resonant and will self oscillate when in bandpass mode. The VCFs have a Frequency and Resonance control and a switch for Lowpass/Bandpass response.
2 Channel Mixer Each voice has its own level control which is fed to the final output stage.
CV inputs for VCF and VCO control Both voices share the same VCF and VCO CV inputs so you can easily sequence both voices of the CDS-2 with the same cv. This allows for great layred sequenced sounds.
Output Overdrive The output stage is capable of nice gritty distortion with its own gain control.
1/4" Output
9V battery or DC adapter. With a choice of either 9V battery or external DC adapter the unit can be a portable unit for busking or impromptu outside jam sessions (when accompanied by a portable amplifier such as This ) or a studio piece. Featuring an on board regulator the unit will clean up any power source from 9-15V"

"The built in true analog filter sounds great. You get a ton of control with touch, breath, bite & sliders. I mostly use the touch pad patched into CV inputs on my Korg MS10. The slides move & work like new. You can run any instrument thru its nice filter. I have used the breath out to VCO to control pitch while bite to filter, worked fine but I hardly ever had the tubes hooked to it. Original manual & tubes included, the plastic is still on the data plate..."

Audulus for Mac v. 1.6 Enhances Patch Loading Between Mac and iPad

"SAN FRANCISCO – Subatomic Software has announced the release of Audulus 1.6 for Mac, an update which improves the loading of patches made with Audulus 1.6 for iPad.

Audulus 1.6. for Mac also adds support for the Mac Book Pro with Retina Display.

'Enhancing the round-trip workflow between the Mac and iPad versions of Audulus is important to our users, many of whom are sharing their patches with us on our website's forum,' says developer W. Taylor Holliday. 'Users can, for example, begin a patch on iPad, load it with the Mac and Plug-in versions, and move it back to iPad for patching on the go.'

In addition to syncing up Mac and iPad versions, Audulus 1.6 for Mac improves general graphics performance. 'The graphics optimizations we did for the iPad version also improved the Mac version of Audulus,' says Holliday.

Audulus is a minimalist modular software synthesizer and effects processor. With Audulus, users can build synthesizers, design new sounds, or process audio. All with low latency real-time processing suitable for live performance.

The Audulus user interface was inspired by analog guitar pedals: sounds are created or altered by connecting processing nodes. There are no hidden controls, no complex menus. The user begins with a blank canvas, rather than with daunting controls, and can build up to the desired level of sonic complexity.

Audulus for Mac key features:

Audio Unit hosting - use your favorite plugins
fluid interface - smooth animated interaction
MIDI control - use your control surface or MIDI keyboard
presets - quickly change between settings
unlimited history - everything you do is stored
polyphony - process multiple voices
encapsulation - group nodes into sub-patches
diverse nodes - from ADSR to ZeroCross
audio unit version - run Audulus as an Audio Unit inside other apps (free download)

Audulus is available on the Mac App Store for $39.99, and on the iPad App Store for $19.99. For more information, visit audulus.com."

Roger Powell To Donate Custom Dual Keyboard to The Bob Moog Foundation

via The Bob Moog Foundation where you'll find the full post.

"My custom dual-manual Moog keyboard controller was built in 1974 along with two System 55 cabinets containing a host of Moog modules. I had been doing clinics in the US and Europe for the Moog company, was hanging out with Bob a lot, and had just joined Todd Rundgren’s Utopiathat summer. The big system was put together for me to perform with on tours. The keyboard was designed to my specifications: two keyboard manuals, pitchbend and mod wheels, a mixer section with four faders, an effects loop, VU meter, and sockets for a Ribbon Controller and standalone Sample/Hold module. Bob himself worked on the mixer circuit design, and also handcrafted aluminum edge protectors for the 55 cabinets to help with wear-and-tear on the road!"

Update: additional pics and the official press release:

"Synthesist Roger Powell Donates a Piece of History to the Bob Moog Foundation

Asheville, NC - November 14, 2012 – In celebration of its recent six-year anniversary, the non-profit Bob Moog Foundation is pleased to announce a generous donation from American synthesist Roger Powell: a dual-manual keyboard that Moog Music custom built for him in 1974. The keyboard, which Powell acquired shortly after joining Todd Rundgren’s Utopia, was part of a synthesizer comprising two Moog System 55 cabinets housing a host of modules.

'The keyboard was designed to my specifications,' says Powell. 'Bob himself worked on the mixer circuit design.” Powell had been doing clinics for Moog Music in the U.S. and Europe, sometimes with Bob Moog when the system was assembled for touring with Utopia.

Like a lot of Moog gear, Powell’s keyboard comes with a fascinating story:

'After the first evening of a two-night booking in Cleveland, the custom keyboard was stolen from the stage. Strangely, the modular system cabinets were left untouched. My guess is that the thief believed the keyboard itself to be playable, as it resembled a two-manual organ. A few years later, the System 55s were destroyed in a warehouse fire, thus removing all remnants of the original system.

'In 2002, much to my surprise, the missing keyboard was listed on eBay. The person offering the keyboard had no idea it had been stolen and was not the thief. (He was younger than the age of the keyboard.) I was able to negotiate its return and have held onto it since, hoping to refurbish it but never completing that project.

'After Bob’s demise and the creation of the Bob Moog Foundation, it occurred to me that the custom keyboard deserved to be in a place where it can serve as my personal tribute to my dear friend Bob Moog. Bob and I spent some very happy times together; I will always remember laughing a lot with him, as we both shared an acerbic, wisecracking sense of humor.'

The Bob Moog Foundation is honored to accept Powell’s donation, and we look forward to restoring the keyboard to its original condition. Our goal is to display it publicly so that, in Powell’s words, 'People can enjoy seeing it and hearing about its interesting past.'

The Bob Moog Foundation is quick becoming a repository for a variety of donated artifacts from music and synthesizer enthusiasts from all over the world. The foundation is stewarding the preservation of donated items including: synthesizers, controllers, photos, schematics, correspondence, equipment, literature and more. Interested donors can contact the foundation at info@moogfoundation.org."

Update 11/15 via Mark Pulver: "Interesting! So, back in February of 2002 I tripped over an eBay auction that featured that controller. From history, I knew that it had been stolen from a gig in Cleveland many moons prior (1974?). I got an contact email for Roger, wrote him, and heard back. He was pretty stoked. We flipped some email and Roger has said it might be hard to prove ownership. I got Bob Moog and Roger Luther involved as well, and RogerL came up with that picture of him and Bob (and the controller).

He contacted the police, but the case had long been closed, so he contacted the eBay seller ("I found it in a storage unit..."). After some nudging and more proof digging from my side and some back and forth, he convinced the seller to let it go - but only after paying the asking price plus shipping to get it back. :("

Make Noise Rene plays Warp-era IDM

Published on Nov 13, 2012 by skrapadelix

"Rene, Make Noise's Cartesian sequencer, continually surprises me by generating unusual and strangely emotive melodies in bizarre time signatures. I powered up my modular to find this rather forlorn sequence conjured from nowhere in particular. For some reason it reminded me of the more ambient side of Autechre so I should probably put a beat behind it and call it Tarnwater or Sliverfoil or something..."

WSG: Sound of different 40106.

Published on Nov 13, 2012 by rpocc

"The goal of this video is to show the difference in sound of the same oscillators built around different models of the same integral circuit. These two particular devices have insignificant differences in schematics, but primary difference is 40106 IC. After shooting this video I've tried both ICs on the same device and got identical results. So don't be confused about different boxes and note the main idea: always try different ICs when you build oscillators. Especially simple like WSG or Atari Punk Console."

"This is a 4 voice OB-X with the Encore Electronics MIDI kit installed and it comes with the owners manual, service manual, and Encore Electronics kit Manual. It will be shipped in a brand new road case.

This OB-X was serviced November 4th 2012 by Riley Smith former tech at Sequential Circuits and E-Mu Systems. He went through the unit completely, replaced the key bushings so it plays great, retuned all the oscillators, and calibrated and tested the unit as specified in the service manual.

More pictures and sound examples of this OB-X here.

CONDITION

This OB-X is in near perfect condition. It has NOT been in a storage unit and shows NO signs of rust

(tip: always look at the rear screws and jack washers for signs of rust on old synths)

It has been in the Mad Science Lab for 16 years and used by the group Silicon Breakdown on many songs. The second photo on this page shows the studio where it’s home has been.

I bought the OB-X from the Starving Musician store in San Jose in 1996. The tag on the back says 8 voice, but it is a 4 voice, I assumed they used the other voice cards to fix other Oberheims. Check out sound examples to see how fat 4 voices can be.

The wood panels and screws and jacks are all original, yet they look almost new. It has never left the studio except to be tuned. The front panel graphics are perfect. The tech mentioned the D key near the word Programmer had been repaired at some point, but the key plays, it is just goes down about 1/8th of inch less then the other keys and feels more squishy then the other keys. It is not visible till you know it's there, and it's not visible in these pictures. I did not know about the key until he tore the keyboard apart to replace the key bushings. There is one large scratch on the back of the unit near the MIDI jack, which is clearly visible in the pictures.

MIDI

This OB-X has the Encore Electronics MIDI kit installed.

This kit allows for MIDI notes as well as midi control of the filter cutoff, resonance and many other controls. It also increases the patch storage from just 32 to 120. And you can save the presets over MIDI so no more messing with tapes. I had the Kenton MIDI kit initially but the Encore Electronics kit is much better. The Oberheim OB-X never had MIDI when produced, and you do not want to deal with a special sequencer DSX hookup to control an OB-X. You need MIDI so you can control the OB-X from a computer sequencer, or a midi keyboard that has controllers to route to the many MIDI controllers on the OB-X Encore kit."

Two oscillators, noise source, LFO, High/Low/Band pass filter separate EG’s for VCA and VCF.

Touch sensitive keyboard.

These are highly sought after due to the gorgeous sound they produce.

I doubt you’ll find a better example complete with original box!

It has no cracks in the casing which so many do have."
