Shootout at the Boomstar Corral - Resonant Filter Comparison by Marc St. Regis

Published on Jan 9, 2014 StudioElectronics·14 videos

"What was it they used to say in the '70s at the end of the 'Streets of San Francisco' opening credits? ... WITH SPECIAL GUEST STAR DREW NEUMANN.

Yeah that was it... wait for him.

The SoundCloud copy reads: "A Tombstone quality Boomstar 5089, 4075, 3003 filter shoot out/comparison. No tricks: no compression/limiting or gain maximizing, EQ, or plugins, just those snappy Studio Electronics hardware envelopes doin' work.

Each of the three Boomstar low-pass resonant filter synths have been put through near identical paces----no mean feat without programmability: and why would you want that in this purist platform? Artifacts and curtains would be in and in front of the sound, slowing and coloring, demanding tribute.

Patch matching contrasting hardware analog synths is not an exact science (sometimes a switch is missed or a pot or two is not precisely placed--you were sure you took a photo of that da#$ patch!) and tangy tangents are often explored at the end of certain sequences, once all the comparison fences have been cleared, but great care was taken to duplicate the settings and live switch flipping, knob turning and flying of the master performance, which could start out on any of the B*s depending upon mood and blind chance----if there is such a thing; mood is as palpable as approaching deadline storms."

c.f., https://soundcloud.com/studio-electro...

But this is no mere SC re-tread: surprises, extended/edited and fresh material awaits.

That should cover the primary speil...

Performed by Marc St. Regis, with the marvelous exception of Drew Neumann's sharing of his 'Big Drum' vision on "Jehan's Mental Martaize," on which the 'no compression/limiting or gain maximizing, EQ' prohibition was specially dispensated off corral and ranch.

Enjoy,

Marc A. Theriot St. Regis 1-9-13 (my #1 son's 19th birthday), Stevenson Ranch, CA"

"This VCO has a very unique sound and tracks nearly 2 octaves with a HZ/volt CV source, But be warned, it is not perfectly scaled and is not temperature stable. That's not a defect its just the way it is, If you want pussy trance anthem pads or want to play Mozart then don't buy this. It's definitely a raw meat kind of aural experience, chewy and tough.

The METASONIX TM-3 consists of two thyratron tube sawtooth oscillators, which are wired in parallel but may be offset with their individual front-panel tuning controls. Furthermore, soft sync is available, to force oscillator 2 to track with oscillator 1.

The waveform produced by the 2D21/5727 thyratrons is unique and distinctive--a very imperfect sawtooth. It's the kind of sound that screams "VINTAGE", because the only other instruments that produce it are vintage ones--the Mixtur-Trautonium, the Univox, and some 1950s electronic organs.

Furthermore, there is a suboctave circuit, which adds a square wave one octave below oscillator 2. It includes short pulses an octave above, for a distinctive sound. And you can mess with the STABILITY control to get unique effects--because the suboctave divider is made of two neon lamps, and NOT a transistor flip-flop. Except for the CV driver, the TM-3 is all tubes.

And unlike most other synthesizer VCOs, the TM-3 is so sensitive that it is easily used for FM sound effects--simply by driving either CV input with a line-level audio signal. Both inputs are DC coupled and highly sensitive. The result is a unique, and very extreme, form of signal distortion.

The TM-3 is a Hz/V VCO, meaning it follows a linear characteristic. Each successive octave requires doubling the control voltage. As shipped, the first octave is swept from 0 volts to 0.25 volts, the next from 0.25 to 0.75 volts, etc. Although not standard to the present modular-synth industry, this scheme simplifies the TM-3's use as a signal processor, and avoids the use of an exponential converter circuit, which can drift with temperature or cause other problems. TM-3's CV control is compatible with vintage Korg MS series and Yamaha CS series synthesizers.

Technical specifications

Output signal max approx 10 v p-p. Capable of approximately 66 Hz to 526 Hz. Center pitch setting with tuning knobs and 0.0v input gives approx. low C (66 Hz). Actual range obtained depends upon individual thyratron tubes installed--about 2 1/2 octaves is typical. May be controlled from any MIDI-CV converter having Hz/V capability, including the Synhouse MIDIJACK II, Philip Rees Little MCV, Kenton Pro-Solo and Pro-2000, and Encore Expressionist.

Power input 10v AC to 12v AC, 50/60 Hz, 1 amp max at idle--derived from an appropriate plug-in AC adapter. Inputs: two 1/4" phone jacks for CV or audio (they mix linearly). Output: 1/4" phone jack, audio, mono, 50k ohm impedance.

Dimensions: 7 1/2" (192mm) x 4 3/8" (112mm) x 3" (77mm). Weight not including accessories approx. 5 pounds (2.2 kg).

This is used electronic gear in great shape (low hours) from a smoke free home studio. I test it before it ships, but it is non returnable and there is no guarantee other than it will not arrive DOA. Rock On!!"

Doepfer A100 Custom Suitcase Analog Modular Synthesizer System

Published on Jan 6, 2014 MarkJenkinsMusic·30 videos

"3 VCO, 5 LFO, VC Delay and Trautonium Ribbon Controller System

This is my incredible custom portable Doepfer A100 modular analog synthesiser system, probably the most powerful it's possible to build in such a compact unit.

Think of it as two separate synths - the top row like a MiniMoog with three oscillators, mixer, Lowpass Filter, Envelope and Modulation Oscillator, the bottom row more like an EMS Synthi VCS3 with four slow oscillators, white noise/random, sample & hold, portamento, a voltage controlled delay line, a custom modulation joystick and a touch sensitive ribbon controller.

The power of this system for electronic, ambient, techno, abstract and film music has to be heard to be believed. Here's my YouTube demo [above] of the actual system on sale, please watch it to the end for important information about the sale."

ShapeShifter Trinity Patch

ShapeShifter Trinity Patch from Richard Devine on Vimeo.

"Patch experiment using 3 intellijel Shapeshifters in more of a musical patch. I first went into all three modules and saved 12 custom patches for each shapeshifter. The first shapeshifter (far left) was programmed using more lower bass modulated sounds and I set the multi scan function to 8 for both VCO's. This created the odd off time dub step wobble and vocal like effects. The step sequence was set to random. I also saved slightly different echo amounts, and set different decay times for the various patches. The next Shapeshifter (middle position), was used primarily as a lead line source. I saved here 12 different melodic timbres that would slowly change in half time increments. The effects are subtle but would act as a double lead line harmony. This is being sequenced by the Metropolis sequencer above in my Goike case. The third shapeshifter (far right), was doing more low LFO pulsing wobbles and digital noise like effects. I saved the first odd numbered programs to be low bass like wobbles in the same key as the first shapeshifter using the muti setting of 8 and 4. The even numbered programs had low bit colored noise presets to off set the spacing and imply more random like textures into the sequence. This was controled via the Modcan Quad LFO running in sample n hold output, running at a slow rate. The rhythmic clocking source is the "Trigger Man" sequencer by Delptronics. All three shapeshifter inputs are synced from the TriggerMan clocked outputs, but at different rates that created the syncopated splashes of texture around the main beat. Kick drum is courtesy of the Blue Lantern "Asteroid BD" V4 module. The snare drum was created by the Mutable Instruments Braid oscillator, running in "CLKN" mode with the envelope setting to "pong". Hi-Hats from the red noise output on the Blue Lantern "Mr Blue" being triggered by the TriggerMan 16th pattern output to cv controlled via the intellijel hex VCA. Small glassy percussion tom via the JoMox Membrane 11 module. The middle shapeshifter output running through the Eventide Space, and "mix A" output running into Strymon blue sky pedal with only 20 percent wet mix in norm/plate setting. All recorded live in one take :-)

the strange strange sounds
the sounds this sk-1 can create can often be complex crazy or harsh and playable it can create rich and long soundscapes with strange ambient background tones that sound something like the engine room of an alien spacecraft. the sample mangling is Lo-fi and very meaty the glitch time is very adjustable and interesting alterations are created that can easily be re sampled for use in a DAW. the chord mode can sound very cool and glitch even creating some strange deep sub bass sounds the part solo switches are fun to play with as well."

MONOpulator - 8 Step Sequencer, Sampler and Drum Machine on Indiegogo

via Indiegogo:

"We're developing a 4 track 8 step sequencer which allows you to place instruments anywhere you want in any of the 8 steps the sequencer has:

Place kick drums, snares, hi hats and crashes up to 8 positions each.
200% pitch control to speed up or slow down Playback & Record speed.
64 KHz sampling, up to 128 KHz Record/Playback speed with pitch control.
This is an all-in-one unit that works as a sequencer, drum machine, and sampler.

What We Need & What You Get

To bring this board into existence we need:

Your help with reaching our fundraising goal so we can manufacture.
Only a limited number of units will be made!
The funds will be going directly to the circuit board manufacturer.
The Impact

This is an all in one unit that can do more than what is currently available:

Effortlessly tell the instruments when to strike during the step sequence.
This board is in high demand from musicians and DJ's, so we're making the board.
This board will cost about 1/10th the price of traditional units, and does much more.
Other Ways You Can Help

Some people just can’t contribute, but that doesn’t mean they can’t help:

Let your musician and DJ friends know about this device because they'll want one.
These units will be going fast, so grab one while you can before manufacture!
And that’s all there is to it."

"Diagram A is my mental feedback research project that has been producing visual and audio noise constructions for about 20 years. All the electronics used in recordings and live demonstrations are handmade and my own design. The skills I have accumulated from this research will be used in the production of a limited edition of noise synth devices if this campaign is funded.

The devices will come with multiple inputs and outputs, a multiple pad touch sensitive control for skin contact, 4 oscillators, noise generator and extra copper pads to make it circuit bender friendly. In other words they will sputter, squeal, and beep. Plug stuff into them or plug them into each other (if you have a couple) to create complex textures! Press your fingers onto touch sensitive pads for additional control of the sound!

My machines endure abuse and keep kicking. These devices will be a reliable construction with a body designed by partner/sculpture Alicia Renadette. Alicia has years of experience in fabrication shops and a solid grasp of materials.

The funding goal is $7000. This would go towards necessary startup costs including materials(aluminum, wood) tools(drill press, jig saw), electronics(printed circuit boards, components), time/rent(I will be quiting my day job to work on this through the winter)

The perks include never heard recordings in hand made art packaging, crazy T shirts with Diagram: A image, one of a kind collages and rarely seen video.

TONTO Arrives at the NMC Calgary Alberta, Canada

"National Music Centre acquires TONTO, world’s largest synthesizer. Credit: Chad Schroter-Gillespie."

This one in via Greg on The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge.

The National Music Center in Calgary Alberta is the new home of TONTO

"TONTO was the first and the largest, multitimbral polyphonic analog synthesizer. This means that it was one of the first synthesizers capable of producing many tone colours with different voices simultaneously.

TONTO was created by Malcom Cecil and Robert Margouleff in 1968 and marked the first attempt at creating a universal language for different synthesizers to communicate with each other, which was revolutionary. TONTO remains the largest analog synthesizer in the world."

Check out the full post at the NMC site here.

Is it the world's largest synthesizer considering modular systems can be endless in size?  It depends on how you look at it.  It is interesting to think of it as a single massive synthesizer. As for possible contenders, my first thought was Benge's studio, the old Aliens Project SynxsS studio (interview here) as well has Hans Zimmer's bookshelves of modulars, but their modular systems are effectively separate.  Are there others?  If you focus on sheer number of modules in one exclusive system there's Billy Corgan's Ichabod which consists of all Mattson modules and the recent Siggi's Super Formant Synthesizer.
