FH-1 as a Digital OSC - Mark Steiner

Published on Mar 13, 2016 Mark Steiner

"FH-1 LFO and Sequencer driving light and sound.

Texture Time!

I know it's a taste thing and there are some incredible digital modules out there, but I've struggled getting into them.

But I'm learning I like them when used for things that exploit the edges (as apposed to digital emulating smooth analog forms). So nice wave form mixes that included some squares and even with drifting pulse width. And now even sequencers, effectively creating flexible super squares. These are great textures that remind me of 8-bit/chiptune stuff and crunchy modem noise type things.

The FH-1 clocks so fast that it makes such digital forms is a really great way, and with very in-depth controls that get you DEEP into the details of the wave.

Raw skeleton of exploration here with the FH-1, as I'm just using 1 or 2 of the 8 outputs and only controlling pitch.

Imagine how much more in-depth it can be also sequencing filters and other modules and running these through tubes and warm or dirty analog VCA's. I've done some of this already and loving the surprise that the FH-1 offers with it's amazing rate of clocking and responding to clocking.

I've planned to and not yet explored digital OSC direction the Silent Way, and then ran into this. Still excited all the more to what Silent Way will be capable of with this direction, considering it's sample-accurate resolution."

sin(apse) Feedback Envelope Sequencer Drum Jam

Published on Mar 13, 2016 Bimini Road

Get Audulus for: iOS | Mac | Windows/Linux

"Two things had to happen to make this module possible: 1) I'm terrible at programming drums and want more automatic beat creation tools. 2) I recently got into Congotronics and polyrhythmic African music. The sin(apse) uses LFOs and envelope feedback to create spontaneous, dynamic, and humanized drumbeats.

At the heart of this module is a Demux-Mux pair. This pair is connected straight across - nothing in between, i.e., the outputs of the Demux are fed directly into the inputs of the Mux.

The Demux and Mux select inputs are driven by different sources - in this case, LFOs, and feedback from the module itself. When the Demux and Mux sync up, they pass signal, triggering an envelope.

The signal level passed is determined by the knob in the top right of the module.

The knob to the right of it is the Attack knob. Directly below these two knobs are the Demux and Mux select controls.

Below those knobs are the lower and upper thresholds for the envelope trigger. If a signal coming out of the Demux-Mux pair is lower or higher than the threshold controls, no signal passes.

The knobs at the bottom of the module are display knobs that show the relative position of the min and max threshold. The minimum value is kept automatically lower than the maximum value.

The 3 Mapper nodes control the individual feedback response of the DSR portion of the envelope. The three buttons turn the feedback to DSR portions on or off (off = setting of .01). To keep the DSR controls from going negative (and causing spontaneous time travel), their feedback inputs are clamped between 0-1.

The LFO or feedback is applied to the Demux-Mux selectors, driving the module. The rest of the modulations change the rhythm or amplitude.

The drums are created with oscillators and a noise source. With a 1/oct oscillator, you can plug the output of an envelope to the inputs for pitch and envelope to create a quick, naturally decaying and pitch modulating drum. Big drums like toms and kicks all detune slightly as they decay - if you note this and add pitch modulation to your drum sounds (just a pinch!) it will go a long way to injecting life into them.

Anyway, I just can't get the sound out of my head. That resonator is a drug.

I thought the drums on remix 1 were too heavy, so i've softened them down a bit.I've added a few loop samples and one or two soft synths to the original ARP 2500 recording."

"Up for auction is a MTRX-8 sequencer, currently has the SEQ X 4 v1.0 firmware in it.
I built a stand for it so it could sit behind one of my synths. Its easy to remove as it just has two bolts on either side, but the original 'ears' have two holes in them where the new stand affixes to.
More info on it here, there's also a bunch of videos too.
http://www.fyrd-instruments.com/MTRX
This on is the first version, slightly bigger than the second version. Sequencer is in good condition, but given that the surface is perspex it has a lot of small marks/scuffs on it. Never gigged, just had minimal studio use, smoke free / animal free studio.
Comes with power supply (not pictured)."

"I bought this synth in 2008 and the 1st owner stated he got it brand new and used it for a couple years. It never left my smoke-free home studio.

Everything works excellent and I never had any issue about it.

I could not see any noticeable scratches, blemishes, dents, etc anywhere on the instrument. It looks pretty new cosmetically and 100% working.

It’s really a unique and powerful analog synth but I didn’t use it to its full potential. I am not quite a programming guy and I only use preset sounds.

Still during my 8-year ownership I did get inspired and wrote some songs.

I include one Youtube link to let you get a taste of its sound." [video above]

This is a very rare and legendary 8 track analogue style midi and CV/gate (5 volts) Sequencer. It is possible to edit every parameter during playback with instant effect. So you can sequence live, also save and load, without stopping playback. Classic techno acts like "Der dritte Raum" used this unit for live performances and recording. For fully features set see doepfer website where you still can download the manual.

I bought it back in 1997. This was one of the very first units ever produced, it was a beta version. It was upgraded later with the original Parts from doepfer that added a new rom and the cv/gate board wich was not included in the beta version. The unit is in fully working condition. There are a few signs of wear, this unit is 19 Years old."

About the keyboard, notes can be entered with Accent, which is important for a typical TB 303 sound."

BURG - Album Movement 09 (Nord Lead A1, KORG ms-20, Volca, JX-03, System-1, TR-8)

Published on Mar 13, 2016 ollilaboratories

"If you like my stuff, please support me on http://music.ollilab.com

Time for the ninth album movement, its getting closer toward the 15 I want to make before I start cutting down the short list.

So, i heard some bagpipes in my head when playing the main melody.. and I wanted build and infuse the track with this idea/feel. .. the NLA1 takes care of the main pads, and also one of the melody sounds.. + a sequence w the SQ-1. (damn that synth is versatile). The ms.20 gets to play the main lead.. and as you all have seen the solidgoldfx electroman is the secret sauce delay im using.

Im back on the volcas too, the novation has found itself in the position which works for me, and which was the main idea.. as scrapbook and sequencer. this time it handles the bass on one of the volcas. No samples on this one... just pure melody and massive PADs to out that dreamy melody in place.. oh yeah, TR8 does 707 drums for the first time on the album tracks.. :)

And as always.. its a bit long :) but hey.. you said you liked that.. haha :D Boom, I hope you can enjoy this one too!

Gear Used: KORG volca sample, keys, bass x2, KORG ms-20, Roland Aira TR-8, System-1, Roland boutique JX03, Nord Lead A1, arturia microbrute, SQ-1, TB-3, novation circuit (sequencer only)

Syncing the Easel!

Published on Mar 13, 2016 Wein Glas

"Just a little Industrial groove to show how to sync the BEMI Easel.

If you only use Midi clock, you can only sync the Arpeggiator and it's keyboard pulse. Using only analog clock doesn't sync the arpeggiator at all. So the secret is to sync both. However, because the Easel needs more than 10 volts and bananas, this isn't as easy as it sounds.

In this experiment I use the Gotharman Little Deformer 2 for the Midi Clock and it's breakout box for the analog clock. the analog clock triggers an EHX clockworks. The outputs from the clockwork are hot enough to trigger the Easel and you can even use different clock division for every channel. So making Polyrhythms is really easy. The last step is a Make Noise Format Jumbler to convert from 1/4 inch plugs to Bananas and to ground the Easel with the other gear. That's it folks :)"

Space Bass (Minilogue, JU-06, Reface DX, XR-20)

Published on Mar 13, 2016 Metatron's Cube

"You have been on space station ST-04 for 9 months, and your resupply drop has just come in. This resupply is different though, this one has that new Hi-Fi system you ordered months back. Thereis a "Calico Noir" tape in the bottom of the box waiting to be listened too as well. In space, no one can hear when you pump bass too loud. So that's one positive aspect of living on a space station alone I guess.
The Beatstep Pro is the master clock on this, and sends start/stop messages to the Minilogue, Reface, and JU-06, which all have sequences on the machines themselves. Thanks for watching and listening!

Minilogue and MiniPops 7 JAM (Arduino by Jan Ostman) Ambient track feat. MT25d Monotribe Multimod

Published on Mar 13, 2016 Arrayzable

"This is a piece of a jam I did the other night. I really love the long sequences the Minilogue can do. Ideal for some ambient noodling.
The red lunchbox contains an Arduino Pro Mini running Jan Ostman's MiniPops 7, O2 code. The midi sync out was made possible by Brikand. On my little built there are only knobs for tempo and pattern shift. I plan on adding drum mute buttons for increasing variations.
The Monotribe is always fun and very easy to make some cool sounds with.
As always live play with synths and sequencers.

Used in this track:

Minilogue
Monotribe multimod = MT25d
MiniPops 7 (arduino code by Jan Ostman, Midi implementation by Brikand)"

Braids - Ripples - Clouds

Published on Mar 13, 2016 Alba Ecstasy

"This is a continuation of the "Braids - first hands on" video [posted here] A better video angle, I also changed the position of the Beatstep Pro and it seems that the power source of the Eurorack is influencing it, making BSP unstable. Only one thing, I saw too late that I should cut a little bit the IN GAIN of Clouds - sorry for the "red" level on it.
My opinion on Braids: even it is digital and I heard so many opinions like "I'm out of here when I see digital modules in a modular synth", well, they're wrong. It is important what you do with a sound source, how you use it in your music, not what is it. Oliver of Mutable Instruments it's a pure genius. And I'm not the only one who say it. All his modules are great, no matter are analog or digital.
Braids it's amazing. Exactly what just I need it for my Berlin School sequences or for drones. Or for leads! Or monotimbral pads! Here it for yourself. Braids it's the star here, but you cannot exclude Ripples and Clouds.

"Improvised session on one of two recent 505 commission pieces.

I work on these from time to time but not often. It all depends on if i have the time. Try me, you might catch me on a good day.

Underpinned by a bass drone from the A4 which is also feeding the 505 control voltage at its filter CV input.

Starts out with some spoken word on the external input and builds from clean to increasingly dirty manipulation of the loop.

Commission is £500. £150 deposit to secure the build. The remaining £350 payable on completion + P&P. Turn around is generally around two months give or take. It depends on how busy i am with real life stuff.

Mods include:

Global pitch
Individual pitch
Individual channel mixing
Envelope controlled square wave generators
Digital delay
Analogue resonant filter
Distortion
External audio input to fx chain
CV in to filter cutoff
5v trigger out (slaved to the cowbells as on a tr626)
