Dave Smith Instruments In The Spotlight With the Prophet-6 and Sheenah Ko

You can find the full interview on DSI's website here.

"Sheenah Ko is a Montreal solo artist, a one-woman show involving analog keyboards and synths, driving beats, fierce enigmatic vocals, and often accompanied by contemporary dancers. She is the keyboardist, vibraphonist, and vocalist for many North American bands, including The Besnard Lakes (Jagjagwar), Thor Harris (from Swans), Kevin Hearn (from The Barenaked Ladies), and is an avid international performer crossing many different musical genres. Her duet act with contemporary dancer Brittney Canda Gering has been described as hypnotic, powerful, and emotional, and is often compared to Kate Bush and Portishead. Alone, they enchant entire venues with their emotionally-charged and extremely visual show.

We chatted with her about how she’s using the Prophet-6."

"Four analog CV outputs, Twelve gate outputs, a wide range of MIDI to CV mapping options at a budget price!
CV.OCD is a device which converts MIDI signals to the Control Voltage (CV) and Trigger/Gate signals which are used to control traditional analog synthesizers.

As well as doing this useful bit of “plumbing”, CV.OCD is designed to open up some creative options that go beyond what a simple MIDI-CV converter can usually do. If you get a bit OCD about your CV this could be the box for you!

CV.OCD has four assignable “continuous” analog CV outputs and twelve assignable gate/trigger outputs

It has powerful functionality for generating clock, trigger and non-note gates from MIDI information. For controlling your analog equipment via MIDI you are probably not going to get as much bang for your buck with anything else!

"The synth is in very good vintage condition. Clean, with minimal cosmetic wear for a synth of this age. Mostly, just stand rash on the bottom, and a few small scratches and dings as expected. All keys, buttons, sliders, and wheels work. Aftertouch works. All indicator lights work. Output and headphone jacks work. Sustain pedal input works. MIDI in and out works. No known issues, other than the fact that it’s missing (2) rubber feet on the bottom, and few small hairline cracks in the plastic to the right of the keybed. See photos for more detail.

The original battery (which was soldered to the circuit board) was replaced a few years ago with a new battery and a battery holder, which will make replacing the battery in the future a snap—no soldering required! (though, the original battery lasted 30+ years, mind you!)

The power switch recently failed, so I replaced it with an OEM switch from Yamaha. This is a common failure for a synth of this age. The new switch should provide years of faithful service!"

This is nothing special just a little jam in the first hour or so of getting the thing out of the box. Suffice to say I am impressed with the sound of the thing!

Tasty Chips Electronics GR-1 -- preliminary noodlings

Published on Feb 12, 2018 Nice and Synths

"Hello! Thanks for watching this video, or at least considering watching. This is yet another noodling video with a new toy. The Tasty Chips GR-1 granular synthesizer. A granular synthesizer breaks an audio file into tiny pieces of wheat, or on occasion barley. All audio is direct from the GR-1 into a Focusrite Scarlett 18i6 with no additional processing (other than normalization.) My GR-1 was on firmware version 1.1.8 for this video.

I thought it might be useful to hear the original sample before the GR-1 patch that uses it, so I included them in the video. Hope its not too annoying.

The GR-1 *can* process live audio, but I need to get a suitable USB audio interface to try it. Another feature of the GR-1 I have yet to try are the two CV inputs. This could open up some fun control possibilities with modular gear.

A nice thing is that every parameter on the GR-1 is controllable via MIDI CC. This is shown at 7:15 where the sample position and filter cutoff are controlled with the Casio XW-P1's step sequencer control tracks. Not that you can really tell, it's not a good example of MIDI control really with the arpeggiator happening. I should've made a clearer example of that.

Apologies if the audio and video don't align exactly, I tried my best to line them up. :)"

Totoro synth prototype wiggling

Published on Feb 12, 2018 ktozjadlciastka

"This is not a demo. It is a recording from a debugging session of my new synth. Some sounds can be really nasty!

A few words about Totoro:
- 1x advanced generator: audio/LFO rates, square/saw/triangle waves, target - filter input or filter cutoff,
- 1x simple generator: audio rate squarewave, simple tuned keyboard with 3 buttons,
- 1x VCF - with 2 resonance settings and cutoff CV,
- generators balance control.

Device uses only 1 quad opamp and considering its simplicity, sounds great! More info avaliable soon @ syntherjack.net"

Review of the Prophet Rev2 by Dave Smith - is it the analog poly synth for you?

Published on Feb 12, 2018 loopop

"Dave Smith has been making synths for 40 years, and traditionally has sold them at a relatively high price. With the Rev2, an update to the original Prophet 08 analog poly synth, that has changed.

The 8 and 16 voice keyboard versions of the Rev2 cost just like the newly announced Korg Prologue, but have substantially more modulation options. The 8 voice Rev2 costs as much as the 8 voice Novation Peak, but is multi-timbral.

Has Dave Smith come out with a "value" poly synth?

This clip is a comprehensive review and overview of all the features an options of the new Prophet Rev2."

"The analog synth part is very close to the original and is well-known for its punchy thick, very characteristic sound.

The oscillator has square and sawtooth waves and it´s frequency can be set with the tune control. The legendary lowpass filter has a cutoff and resonance control and in addition you can modulate the cutoff frequency with the decay envelope generator that´s decay time and amount of modulation can be controlled. The accent potentiometer determines the amount of accent.

The sequencer allows for classic 303-style sequencing with slide and accent parameters that can be set for each set note but it is much more friendly to use and has six different operational modes. The sequences can be saved in 12 banks with each 8 patterns. In Pattern-Play mode you can chain adjacent patterns from one bank. By copy and past copying paterns is easy, also copying into other banks.

Suns - Digitakt Ambient recorded to cassette

"Another peaceful ambient session with the Digitakt, recorded straight to cassette. I'm absolutely loving this machine!

Besides two little field recordings, all sounds were made with single cycle waves and internal resampling.

The video goes in and out of sync due to tape warble, nothing I can do about that. Hope you still enjoy it."

008//Nanotech [Atonal Ambient] - 2x Mother 32, Eventide Space, Eventide Timefactor

Published on Feb 12, 2018 Alastair Wilson

"An atomospheric, atonal, fully self-generating modular patch using a 2 Mother 32s sent through an Eventide Space black hole reverb and an Eventide Timefactor on vintage delay setting. No other processing has been applied.

Finally, I decided to make an entirely self-generating patch! The 2 Mother 32s are very similar, with self-resonating filters having their amplitudes modulated by the VCO Pulse outputs, and random stepped voltages affecting the filter cutoffs and the VCO pitches. The only real difference is that one of the Mother 32s has a short attack on the envelope, while the other has a long attack. The distortion on the delays comes from turning down the bit rate on the Timefactor being turned down to minimum.

This patch makes me think of a decrepit spaceship abandoned on an alien planet (an oddly precise image), and narrowly escaped being called 'Nostromo' because of it. What does this patch make you think of?

KRAUTROCK PHASER with Roland Juno 60

Published on Feb 12, 2018 Rob Welt

"My very warm, rough and vintage sounding Krautrock Phaser, a clone of the famous Schulte Compact Phasing A.
The sound is the opposite of an analytic phaser. It has its own live.
Demo is made with Roland Juno 60 and a little bit of OTO BAM Reverb. the first seconds is the Juno clean without phaser.
After 5 Minutes I used CV of my GRP R24 to control the Krautrockphaser . First through the Footswitch Input then through the real CV-Input. AT the End I used the internal LFO of the Phaser.

No other external FX, no Mastering"
