VCV Rack running on Mac Mini
Make Music 0-Coast semi-modular synth
Roland System 1m semi-modular synth"

Update via Joe in the comments:

"A little more info on the piece:

VCV Rack is the centerpiece: A master clock is driving multiple sequences. Three of those sequences are being realized within VCV Rack and a fourth sequence is exiting the computer to control the Roland System 1m via control voltage. The Make Noise 0-Coast is self-playing, providing the drone. A Keystep (just below the camera and off-screen) lets me change the pitch of the drone and add more overtones to it. The audio from both the System 1m and the 0-Coast are being routed back into the VCV Rack where all of the audio chains are sent to the mixer where virtual tape delays are set up on an effect send.

Thanks for listening!"

54HP Episode 4: Lo-Fi Groovebox

Published on Apr 20, 2018 Perfect Circuit Audio

"On this episode of 54HP we built a lo-fi sample based groovebox case with the new Assimil8or as the sound generating core. This 8 track sampler and sample player can play back sounds as well as DC coupled CV sequences and modulation. The Assimil8or is capable of high quality sample playback as well, but features bit reduction and lo-fi aliasing options. Clock dividers and mathematical sequencers were used to trigger the samples and the Mum M8 filter adds some more lo-fi sampler character at the end of the chain.

Let us know in the comments what type 54hp of case you want to see next.

Published on Apr 20, 2018 Transistor Sounds Labs

"Something a little different...

Always liked the track 'Dr. Ford' from the Westworld soundtrack and got carried away figuring out the notation. So ended up recording this cover in Ableton Live.

4 parts on the synth: Stepper Acid sequencing x0x heart, two patches for additional pad/bass parts and a sequenced, filtered noise rhythm.

Additional piano/pad in software, a bit of guitar thrown in for good measure and some delays/reverbs etc."

New WMD Fracture Eurorack Module Now Shipping

You can find demos in the archives here.

"WMD fuels fire for expanding Eurorack world with singular-sounding Fracture multi-particle percussion synth module

DENVER, CO, USA: modular synthesizers, guitar pedals, and standalone musical instruments manufacturer WMD is proud to announce availability of Fracture — a multi-particle percussion synthesizer module for small-format Eurorack modular systems that applies concepts from classic analogue clap circuits to granular synthesis techniques to generate a wide palette of sounds while maintaining a simple, intuitive interface — as of April 20…

Initially inspired by audience applause, hip-hop samples, and classic drum machines, Fracture is much more than another percussion module or ‘sample player’ for expanding Eurorack modular system setups since it uses granular synthesis techniques to generate a wide palette of sounds while maintaining a simple, intuitive interface. In itself, that’s no small feat. For granular synthesis is a technique that operates on the microsound time scale (specifically shorter than one tenth of a second and longer than 10 milliseconds, including the 20 Hz to 20 kHz audio frequency range and the infrasonic frequency range below 20 Hz); based on the same principal as sampling, samples are not conventionally played back, but split into smaller segments or grains (of around one to 50 milliseconds) that may be layered on top of each other, played at different speeds, phases, volume, and frequency (amongst other parameters).

Proprietary micro-samples — specifically recorded for this purpose by WMD — is where it all starts for Fracture. It ends with an engine built to suit those samples, ultimately. Unlike WMD’s first Eurorack percussion synthesizer module, Chimera, which involves impulse-rich samples at its tonal centre, Fracture uses single-impulse samples such as claps, ping-pong balls, opening a beer can, and many more. Moreover, it then plays back a group of similar such samples in a pseudo-random order resulting in unique hits. DENSITY, DECAY, and TAIL settings all affect tone and how ‘tight’ the user’s virtual clappers are to playing together.

Trying to design a clap percussion module with wide-reaching range — from classic drum machine claps all the way to full audience applause — was WMD’s definitive design goal for Fracture. Fortunately, Fracture exceeded expectations, ending up as a module capably covering an amazing array of timbres that reach way beyond the scope of claps.

Fracture features a number of other outstanding sound-sculpting tools packed into its slender (8HP width) frame, including a stereo output (OUT L and OUT R); built-in H (Hall) and R (Room) REVERB; two trigger inputs for different sound types — TRIG triggers a burst of particles and TICK triggers a single particle (independently of the TRIG input); three types of filter; three types of envelope; and a free-running, voltage-controlled ‘applause’ capability. CV (Control Voltage) over all parameters is also available of course.

Creating singular-sounding percussion that fuels fire for the ever-expanding Eurorack world is perfectly possible with WMD’s latest (multi-particle percussion synthesizer) module. Making room for Fracture is surely space well filled and money well spent!

Shipping now, Fracture is available to purchase through WMD’s growing global network of authorised dealers"

iElectribe Control Template for Elektron Digitakt

Published on Apr 15, 2018 Particles Into Waves

"I just created a controller template for Korg’s iElectribe on iPad, an 8-part digital drum synth with FX. This allows the 8 MIDI tracks to individually control and sequence all 8 sounds in the app. Every channel is mapped to edit Pitch, Mod Depth, Mod Speed, Decay, Level, and Pan of each sound, plus there are global controls for the FX, Tube Gain, Accent Volume, and Master Volume embedded in tracks A-C. There are quite a few other CCs available but I felt they were most efficiently accessed from the iPad because a lot of them only respond to 2-8 different values, which would be cumbersome on the Digitakt.

You’ll need some kind of SysEx transfer utility such as C6 for desktop, or SysEx Base for iPad (highly recommended).

Inside the zip you’ll find four files:

iElectribe Init - blank pattern with values centered or zeroed
iElectribe Demo - quick demo pattern using the CCs to create a “virtual patch” and sequence
iElectribe Map - image of the control map for each MIDI channel

Yamaha VL1-m Synth Module SN KP01855 - Demo Songs Video

Warning: some clipping in this one so don't turn it up too loud.

"Recorded directly into my phone (using a line-in cable, so it is recorded in mono), with no processing or editing. Weird that the video & audio goes out of sync at the end of the whole clip.

I am selling this particular VL1-m (has a new cool blue LCD just replaced), so I recorded the demo songs to show what this baby can do"

via this auction

"If you have not played with a VL1 or VL1-m in the past, please check out the youtube video. This will give you an idea of its sonic capabilities.

LCD display had been replaced with a new cool-blue LCD, which is much brighter and looking great. The LCD is seated slightly higher than the original display due to mechanical mounting differences (please see pictures).

The new LCD has LED backlight, which does not need a high voltage converter used on the original backlight that can fade over time and was sometimes plagued with high pitched whining noise coming from the high voltage converter.

New floppy drive also replaced, using NOS (New Old Stock) TEAC drive manufactured in 2010. To accommodate the new drive, a 34pin to 26pin floppy drive adapter is used (see picture). The original drive (which had a broken belt drive) used much older and uncommon 26pin flat cable, and a direct working replacement is nearly impossible to find. Please note the new floppy drive is unconfirmed for functionality because I do not have any new blank floppies to test. I got an old floppy disk from a friend which is probably 20 years old. The drive responds to read/format controls, and spins up but does not recognize the old floppy. Therefore I can't confirm the floppy drive is fully operational. If you do not want to use the floppy drive, the 34pin to 26pin adapter inside should allow you to replace the drive with a SD card reader emulator in the same form factor. That means you could put all the patch data available for download on the internet onto a single SD card for greater convenience.

120V version, which will take power between 100-120V (I was using 110V). I looked up the service manual, and the power supply has 2 part numbers (VS219600, marked J,U. And VS219700, marked H,D,B,A). The marking J,U means Japan, USA. So this unit is definitely designed to work between 100-120V." [image below]

"You already know what this is. If not you must have been living under a rock for 40 years. If so I don't need to tell you what it does or how it sounds. This is THE king of drum machines. As you can imagine it's a sad day for me selling this baby. But baby twins are expensive.

This was my OG baby and I've had it since the early 2000's, it is a little quirky with some buttons not working unless you press the later 13,14,15,16 once lit up will work but probably need a little work.

It is totally functional and works fine. Or money back.

I have had it midi modded and it does work but I can't remember the exact midi notes, its channel 10 and I believe the same notes as the first bank of an mpc2000xl pads, so one foot switch port was sacrificed for that. I can't 100% guarantee it's working but someone buying this will probably be analog synthy modular minded and know how to fix it. It was originally done by mungo if that means anything to anyone."

Just Oberheim over-engineering everything

Published on Apr 19, 2018 Synthead

Funny. You gotta fit it in somehow. :) What's worse are the stacked voice boards on the right. Not sure about the OB-X in this video, but on the OB-Xa, the hinges that allow you to flip the top four voice boards up are screwed into the case and attached to the daughter board. The problem is they can get slightly out of line if they are twisted, and if they aren't in line, they can be damaged due to stress when you lift the board. Think of trying to open a door or lid with the hinge not at a right angle.

Just like modem connection signals from days past! Ever wonder what those "Tape" jacks on the back of vintage pre-midi synths? It wasn't to record your music to tape. It was for backing up and loading patches. I'm guessing 99.99% of you already know this, but for the .01%, now you know. ;) What you are hearing above is not coming from the OB-Xa's synth engine. It's an analog audio digital representation of data that the OB-Xa can decipher to load patches.
