Always Going up - Dave Smith Instruments Pro 2

Published on May 19, 2018 100 Things I Do

"Thought I would try something a little different this week, This clip is an experiment in taking the H3000 and using the H910 Algorithm to loop back on its self while slowly increasing pitch. Too much seemed to overwhelm the synth and sound quite horrible, just a taste every now and then seems to create some more interest in what would otherwise be quite a basic sound."

"Very rare and works perfectly. This keyboard is in great vintage condition and ALL aspects function as designed. This is known for its striking appearance and unusual features. Among the 14 instrument names include “hill band”, “blast off” and “space junk” . Press the “adjustables on” button to activate the 7 ANALOG CONTROLS! The pitch selector has “high, normal, low, deep AND sub”! Six rhythms are available including “teen beat” and a tempo speed control. Separate left hand selects and volume control. A three stage SPRING REVERB adds to the (already significant) bad-assery of this instrument. To me it looks like something Brian Eno would’ve played in his Roxy Music days!"

"★ RUPA ★ Ambient ★ Dave Smith Evolver ★ Strymon Big Sky Reverb ★

In Hinduism and Buddhism, rūpa means, in general, "material form." In the Pali Canon, it is expressed as three constructs: 1) rūpa-khandha – "material forms," 2) rūpa-āyatana – "visible objects," and 3) nāma-rūpa – "name and form" or "mind and body."

Live performance with Dave Smith Evolver into the Strymon Big Sky Reverb.

All sounds and effects from the Evolver and Strymon recorded directly into Protools with minimal compression and EQ."

"The story about Danger & Dreams goes back to a call from a film producer who wanted something "Stranger Things"-esque for his film, which I then produced quite quickly.

Those who know Stranger Things (series on Netflix) will know that the music sounds very electronic and reminds of Tangerine Dream. Musically it is something like "Berlin School", some TD and of course also some Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein aka Survive!

Look forward to an exciting web of pulsating sequences and synthesizer sounds, with nice old and well-known sounds appearing here and there, which you have certainly heard in this way before in the 80s.

I produced it and used many old vintage synthesizers, like the PPG Wave 2.2 and 2.3, which both fire out some fat pad sounds. Or the Roland Jupiter 6, which contributes sequences.

The film is about aliens "terraforming" the overheated planet Earth so that people can live together in peace again. Anyone who sees parallels to the Syrian war and the exploitation of resources, isn't completely off!

Let's go! Danger & Dreams! The invasion will start now!"

Improvisation 83 for Poly Evolver Keyboard and Prophet '08

Published on May 18, 2018 Sacred Synthesis

"A slow and dreamy synthesizer piece.

This improvisation makes use of a soft metallic digital pad on the Poly Evolver, a string pad on one Prophet '08, and a flute-like solo patch on another Prophet '08.

The digital pad is either mellow or shrill, depending on the setting of the filter cut off frequency, which is controlled by the modulation wheel. Its extreme upper range has much digital aliasing.

The Prophet '08 string pad uses a 2-pole filter setting with a high resonance level,, and its filter is similarly controlled by the modulation wheel. As always, the filter is very slowly modulated by an LFO. This creates a slight crescendo whenever a note or chord is sustained and gives the pad a slight heaving/breathing quality.

The flute sound seems simple but is deceptively elaborate. It consists of a narrow pulse and a square. The pulse width of each waveform is very slightly and slowly modulated. In addition, an LFO slowly modulates between one oscillator and the other. This means there is a subtle chorus effect from the PWM, a changing of timbre as the narrow pulse changes to a square and then back again, a faint beating of oscillators when the two briefly meet in the middle, plus a delayed vibrato which can be either maintained by a smooth connected playing technique or retriggered (and thus, delayed) by a disconnected playing technique. Its filter, too, is controlled by the modulation wheel. To deepen the richness of the patch's general tone, the identical sound of Layer A is copied to Layer B and the two are panned at the mixer. So much trouble for a simple little flute sound, but it's always worth it. Of course, all these effects are detectible only when a long note is heard, and that's fine, because they're meant to be musical nuances that don't overly attract attention to themselves."

Roland JX-8P Analog Polyphonic Synthesizer w/ Restored Aftertouch & Memory Cart

"One of the best features of the JX is the expressive aftertouch feature that can be used to boost things such as volume, modulation, brightness, opening of filters, etc. just by pressing down a little harder on the keys you are holding down. Unfortunately, on virtually every JX-8P in the world, the aftertouch no longer works or is very, very faint due to age. I've owned almost a dozen JX-8Ps through the years and it was an issue on each and every one of them as well as virtually any you'll find for sale elsewhere.

It's a tedious process to restore the aftertouch on one of these, but I've gotten very good at it. The synth gets opened up and the keybed removed. All 61 key springs are removed, then all the keys, one by one. While out, I gave the keys a good sudsy bath and removed all the dirty and grime of a 30+ year old synth. The aftertouch assembly which runs the length of the keybed is taken apart and meticulously cleaned to remove the oxidation that causes it to go out. Reassembly is nerve wracking and usually takes two sets of hands to pull off trying to lay a long metal ribbon atop 5 end to end carbon rubberized strips that sit on top of a gold rail and lay a heavy rubber cap onto of the whole assembly without knocking it askew and having to retry.

Anyhow, the aftertouch was fixed this week and now is expressive and strong without being overly touchy. You'll enjoy it. If tested all key keys and functions and everything is working perfectly as far as I can tell. It got a good cleaning, inside and out while it was opened up to restore the aftertouch."

024//Night Trains - a hypnotic Moog DFAM & Mother 32 minimal ambient track

Published on May 19, 2018 Alastair Wilson

"A melodic, semi-self-generating patch using a DFAM and a Mother 32 sent through an Eventide Space hall reverb and an Eventide Timefactor on tape setting.

I made this patch as an experiment into the DFAM's ability to play melodies (protip: small knobs are a nightmare to tune with!), supported by a simple note from the Mother 32. It's strangely hypnotic with the repetition of the single note, and that coupled with the ambient vibe made me think of a late night long train journey, hence the name.

PATCH NOTES:
In this patch, the DFAM plays chords - the sequencer's pitch knobs control the pitch of VCO 2, while the velocity knobs are patched to control the pitch of VCO 1. VCO 1 is also patched to the external audio input of the DFAM, allowing me to modulate its volume. The M32 is playing a single bass note, with the DFAM's VCO 2 patched into the M32's external audio input and the mix between them modulated by a slow square LFO. Most of the modulation is done with the random stepped voltages from the M32's Assign output - this is patched to the resonance of the M32's filter, and the DFAM's step advance input and volume of VCO 1.

If you want to recreate this patch, you can find it here:
