"Electrifying Music: The Life and Legacy of Robert Moog

March 6 to October 16, 2020

Hirshland Exhibition Gallery, Level 2B, Carl A. Kroch Library

Drawing from Cornell’s rich archive of materials that traces Moog’s lifelong fascination with electricity and its musical possibilities, this exhibition features instrument prototypes, design schematics, photographs, correspondence, and audio recordings. It also provides viewers with an opportunity to play a theremin and Minimoog supplied by Moog Music Inc.

[left: Wendy Carlos's studio, ca. 1968.]

Highlights include documents from Moog’s years studying at Cornell University, running his first synthesizer factory in Trumansburg, New York, and collaborating with composers and recording artists for whom he created personalized systems, including Wendy Carlos, who popularized the Moog synthesizer with the album Switched-On Bach; Keith Emerson of the progressive rock band Emerson, Lake, and Palmer; and jazz musician Eddie Harris.

Electrifying Music is a collaboration among Cornell University’s Department of Music, Department of Science and Technology Studies, and Cornell University Library’s Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections.

Exhibition curators: Judith Peraino (Music), Trevor Pinch (Science and Technology Studies), Roger Moseley (Music).

This exhibition is funded through the generous support of the Stephen E. ’58, MBA ’59 and Evalyn Edwards ’60 Milman Exhibition Fund, with additional contributions from Moog Music Inc.

Online exhibition coming in March.

"Everyone says sending MI Rings into MI Clouds is played out. However, I feel like there are still a lot of cool tracks to be made with these two modules. This is the third video in my 'Rings in the Clouds' series. Here I send Rings into Clouds then mult the audio out back into Rings causing a Rings/Clouds feedback loop. It sounds pretty cool."

Hydrasynth - first patch

Published on Feb 20, 2020 Brittle stR music

"Self-playing patch on the Hydrasynth, which arrived this week. The ratchet on the arpeggiator is something I can see myself overusing shamelessly! It's a surprise to find this feature on an arp. The patch uses just the one oscillator, with a free-running LFO modulating the wavescan. Strings pad is from the Virus C sequenced in Logic; solar wind FX is from the DSI Pro 2."

"This is an amazing synth capable of massive sounds! Vocoder? Check. 4 part analog? Check. 4 part digital synth? Check. Making unreal massive sounds? Priceless!

This really is a sound designer's dream synth. Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran fame helped design it in partnership with Roland. I hate to let it go, but other gear awaits. It is barely used, never toured, in mint condition, and super clean with all the original packaging. I also include the replacement control overlays from Roland. The stock control panel is very glossy, so they made a matte version you can apply over the top to help in reading the controls. See the photos for reference. I am also including a 32GB USB drive with several banks of sounds, which are free to download from Roland, and many more available too. You can plug the USB drive into the unit and they will load when the USB button is activated on the keyboard. Check out Roland's site for all the details on the synth. Watch the Gattobus video too to get the big picture of what this amazing board can do!"

Nice glossy pics!

SONG:MODE - LaunchPad Edition - Walkthrough -Control Surface Script for Ableton Live

Published on Feb 20, 2020 Isotonik Studios

"SONG:MODE - LaunchPad Edition is a ew way of interacting with session view in Ableton Live.

To prepare your live set add (SONG1), (SONG2) to your scene names & use the colours of the scenes to give you a visual indication of their content.

Switch the LaunchPad into SONG:MODE and the top half of the button matrix will light up to give you a selection buttons for each of your named songs.

The bottom half will then switch to display all of the scenes that hold the same (SONG#) in their name. This then allows you to trigger or simply select the scene in question.

The benefit of focusing on your performance and not the screen, nor the need for rapid scrolling through your live set when you want to change the order of your songs will are you up to be even more creative in your performance.

Songs scenes are represented on the LaunchPad in the order they appear in your live set, however this doesn't mean that they have to be next to each other so you could split up your songs over many many scenes, perhaps have the main body of the song together and then a remix or reprise further down your set.

In this video I also demonstrate how you could use this tool with Dummy Clips, ClyphX Pro Binding actions or even to trigger an action to recall a VST preset on the fly.

1980s Roland Juno-106 Vintage Analog Synthesizer Fully Serviced w/ MIDI

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"1980's Roland Juno-106 analog synthesizer in exceptional condition and in good working order. Recently imported directly from Japan, this synth has just been fully serviced and calibrated, fitted with an IEC power receptacle and wired for 120V. One of the most enduringly popular Roland synths of the '80s, the Juno-106 has virtually the same synth engine as its predecessor the Juno 60, yet with extensive MIDI capability and over twice the patch memory storage (128 patches).

The Juno-106 is a six-voice polyphonic and programable analog synth with one digitally controlled oscillator (DCO) per voice. The Juno-106 uses built-in Chorus to fatten up its sound to dramatic effect too. The nature of the Juno's DCO results in a sound that is stable, always in perfect tune, but still warm and analog. The Juno features an excellent 24dB/oct analog lowpass filter with plenty of resonance and self-oscillating possibilities as well as a non-resonant high pass filter. The programable pitch/mod bender can be assigned to control the DCO pitch, VCF cutoff, and LFO amount all at once or individually.

Cosmetically, this Roland synthesizer shows only light wear on the back and bottom of the enclosure, with clean and virtually unfaded key caps, all original slider caps intact, and bright graphics. This synth is straightforward, powerful, and the perfect balance of thick analog warmth and modern digital convenience."

Sequential Circuits Prophet 600

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Sequential Circuits Prophet 600 in excellent condition and in perfect working order. The celebrated little brother of the Prophet 5 and the first commercially available synth to feature MIDI functionality, the P600 model is an incredible value, retaining the rich tonal quality and much of the functionality of the Prophet 5.

The P600 has two oscillators per voice with sawtooth, triangle, and variable pulse waveforms. The oscillators can be individually tuned or synced together. Similar quality VCF and VCA sections from the Prophet 5 can be found here too! The P5's Poly-Mod section has also been passed onto the P600. An extremely versatile and easy to use synth, highlights of the P600 include the onboard arpeggiator, two-track sequencer and poly-modulation. The P600 is great for creating analog effects, swells and drones, and additionally boasts a glide effect and very flexible modulation possibilities.

The synth has been freshly serviced and thoroughly tested, and all functions and features work as intended. There's only very light wear on the solid wood ends framing the synth, and only a bit of additional light edge wear on the enclosure. All of the original knobs are intact too."

Kimball Challenger for that Beach House Sound

via this auction

"Here's a rare vintage keyboard/synth/drum machine/noise machine/chord arranger from the 1980s that looks as rad as it sounds! This machine will nail that Beach House sound, has a great organ and celeste preset, a flute patch that's not far off from a Mellotron, a primitive arpeggiator-type of setting for the banjo sound that is a blast to use, weird brass sounds as well some great weird synth-y tones, hilarious sound effects, great drum patterns with a fill button that adds nice variation and more. If you're looking for some serious vintage vibe to add to your studio and performances you just found it."
