Scrat is an aggressive sounding multimode Steiner-Parker filter with a twist: You can change the resonance flavour by plugging in components like diodes, capacitors or resistors (even LEDs and/or light-dependent resistors) directly to the front panel. A set of preset cartridges is also available, which gives you instant access to a variety of filter sounds. You could even make your own. Or go all in and connect some jumper wires to a breadboard for pretty much endless possibilities.

The 2-pole filter (12 dB/octave) supports both high-pass and low-pass mode. Even without external components or cartridges, the resonance behaviour can be changed in various ways via switches on the front panel. Both resonance and cutoff can be fully CV controlled, and the cutoff CV sensitivity can be adjusted as well.

The module contains an adjustable pre-filter drive circuit, which pairs very well with the Steiner-Parker design.

Scrat is available from July 2022 as a full DIY kit from retailers. It's a relatively easy build to complete, with a low component count and no SMD or other tricky parts. A set of 4 preset cards called Nuts (Acorn, Almond, Cashew and Pecan) is also available.

If you were thinking at all about owning and using a legacy Moog modular system, with every extra, this is the one, and this is the deal that will get you there. Save on this because it is “open box”.

The 3 synthesizer cabinets, plus the sequencer, keyboard, and an upgrade of additional Moog patch cables, retailed for around $47,000.

The Compliment B sequencer is the unboxed portion of this system, and was entirely unboxed and tested, because the outer box was damaged in shipping on one of the four units, so an inspection was required. It turned out the cabinet hinges were damaged on the 4th cabinet, which is the sequencer. All three of the synthesizer cabinets are in their original Moog boxes, mint. The duophonic keyboard and all cables, including an EXTRA/additional set of patch cables are all still in their original packaging. If you have seen the prices for the cable sets alone, you understand the emphasis.

All will ship in the original Moog packing materials, including the exterior boxes, interior foam, plastic bags, etc. - for free - within the continental United States.

Included are all Moog 1/4" patch cables, warranty cards, hardcover manuals, s-trig converters, and more.

Hand delivery is possible within the Southeastern United States.

Moog 912 Envelope Follower - Modified....

"After finally getting my R.A.Moog 912 Envelope Follower working and calibrated recently, it was pointed out to me that it only 'swept' downwards. Good point... in it's standard form the CV it outputs, according to the level on it's input, always peaks high and then drops low. So I thought it would be an interesting project to modify it and have it be able to sweep both down and up. After building an op-amp circuit and testing it I replaced the 'threshold' pot with one of those push/pull guitar pots which has a built in switch - when pulled out it switches to the new 'sweep up' mode. I also installed an 'off-set' pot so I can alter the sweep 'window' for the new mode, which seems quite useful too...! Triggering from a drum machine for this demo and the CV out is patched to both pitch & filter."

In this quick and dirty vid I show some mods only, more on my Minilogue page linked above. What you see and hear is the delay modded for more feedback, an entirely new bandpass filter mode, and some bonkers modification of cross mod and ring mod, where VCO one of one voice can modulate VCO of another voice, so your XM or RM sounds different per note/chord you play!"

"The other day, my Casio RZ-1 came back from service after quite a while. Nevertheless, X-tended in Berlin is the first choice for me when it comes to repair and service of vintage synths! The RZ-1 got a firmware upgrade to version 2.0 and an additional DMX sound set fitted. Now the drum computer runs like clockwork again! However, you should not try to synchronize it as a slave to the DAW. Mr. Casio wants to be the master in the house and is then super tight and funky!

Let's listen to the GRP Synthesizer A2 - a very versatile analog monosynth with a high-quality sound and a huge number of modulation possibilities - and this is no exaggeration: The frequency of the two oscillators and the filter cutoff each can be influenced by one of 11 different modulation signals.

The two oscillators feature 5 waveforms each, the first VCO offers additional PWM at two waveforms, the second VCO a parameter called "Shape" which fades in nine copies of the selected waveform for super-saw and super-triangle sounds. You get a Ring Mod, Noise, Sample & Hold, two LFOs, arpeggiator and more.

The filter design has a lot of character and is capable of producing formant/vocal-like sounds and a liquid sounding resonance. The great sounding distortion parameter offers many more options for designing sounds.

With its MIDI and CV/Gate inputs this is a synthesizer that fits in all studio or live-environments. It has a good size for jamming and a quality feel - and last but not least, the A2 is proving very popular among our staff - so maybe that means something.

My argumentation is simple: I don't believe anyone, whether in his right mind or not, will give those asking prices for this instrument. Yes, it is a rare and rather unique module, but even so.... Anyway, anyone really wanting to give me in excess of € 1500 for this synth is of course very, very welcome.

To the point: this Expander 80 is mint. Not a scratch, not a spot of dust. Of course, fully functional. Comes with it's original power supply, which is already a rare feat."

Yamaha SY22 | Trade or throw?

"Yamaha SY22 - Dynamic Vector Synthesizer. From 1990. When Sequential Circuit went out of business and was bought up by Yamaha some of the team, headed by John Bowen went to work on the Korg Wavestation (also owned by Yamaha at the time) while Yamaha themselves went on to work on the SY22. As with the Prophet VS and the Wavestation, the SY22 works with 4 different elements, sound sources, oscillators or whatever you might call them, and with a joystick you can control their relative levels to each other. Or you can use the joystick to detune them. Coupled with in-built internal effects, 16 voices of polyphony and 8-part multi timbral (as well as a drum kit) it was a cheaper alternative of getting into "vector" synthesis.

Since the shooting of this video I've traded my SY22 for a Yamaha DX9. I've never really liked the sound coming out of the SY22. It can definitely be lo-fi, or glossy, and it can be a nice textured contrast to other synths, but sometimes you just don't "click" with certain synths and for me this is one of those cases."
