Luma-1 - playing lost LM1 patterns

video upload by DeftAudio

"Playing LM1 patterns on Luma-1 live, no post processing. Yamaha DMP11 used as the FX for delay and Gated Verb.

Luma-1 is an authentic recreation of the iconic LM-1, originally designed by Roger Linn in 1979 and now brought back by Joe Britt. Fully recreating the original design of the LM-1, it utilizes the same audio path (with vintage DACs and filters), runs the unmodified LM-1 software, and adds a secondary modern processor for adding highly desirable features like loadable sounds, USB connectivity, MIDI and more."

Hardware Jams Weekend Challenge: Heavenly Pads and Hellish Drums (Noisevember 06)

video upload by SynthAddict

"Maschine+ of course :-)

Crunchy distorted and FM-tweaked loud drums, etc. mixed with pretty yet sad pads and leads…

***Oops, I just remembered I had an ARP section that wasn't even finished or implemented - I may add it and do a rev 2 version later. :-) The partial ARP version was muted the whole time.
Making stuff last-minute and in a rush is always risky. :-P"

Hypnotic jam with Sequential Take 5, Midicake ARP, Dreadbox Nymphes, Roland SH-101, DrumBrute Impact

video upload by Jay Hosking

A live, semi-improvised synthesizer jam performed entirely on hardware.

I'm lucky enough to have access to a new studio space, and am now in the process of moving over there. That means the days and nights have been long. One evening I was casually noodling on the Take 5 and came up with a patch and arpeggio I liked, but didn't feel I had time and capacity to do a full sequence and arrangement with other devices.

That's where the Midicake ARP comes in to save the day. Rather than sequence anything, I simply sent my MIDI data out of the Take 5 and into the ARP. The ARP then recontextualized the notes and can send them out to up to four other devices (here, I used three, plus MIDI clock to the DrumBrute Impact). Thanks to the ARP, I could explore chords and improvisation without having to write a single note in a sequencer. The ARP really is a great solution to a classic songwriting problem: being able to find the song with all the parts at once, rather than imagine all the parts and then write them.

From there, it was a matter of laying down some instruments and effects I liked the sound of. No surprises here, other than the Boss DM-101, which I got recently. It doesn't quite have the personality of the Matriarch delay, but it's a great and more versatile analog delay that I look forward to using more.

All in all, a really fun jam, and I was extremely grateful to have the tools I needed to write the song on the fly across multiple instruments.

Thanks for listening.

Sequential Take 5 - main arpeggio, MIDI controller/data out
Midicake ARP - "sequencer" (note recontextualizer? arpeggiator?)
Arturia DrumBrute Impact - drums
Dreadbox Nymphes through Strymon BigSky - arpeggio two
Blackout Model D through Boss DM-101 - bass synth
Roland SH-101 through Walrus Sloër - arpeggio three (the slow high one)
Kenton Pro-Solo Mk3 - MIDI to CV for SH-101
Kenton MIDI Thru - MIDI through to all devices

Performed and recorded live, with eq, compression, and limiting in the box.

Xaoc Devices strikes back with Batumi II

Update via Xaoc Devices: "Unfortunately, we had made an error in the Batumi II description you received suggesting the assign waveform selection was performed on a per-channel basis even without the Poti II expander. That is not the case."

Updated press release follows:

Xaoc Devices presents Batumi II – a greatly improved and enhanced new iteration of the modern day classic that is/was the original Batumi, preserving its layout and form factor. The premise remains the same: four LFO’s with individual outputs for sine, assign and rectangle waves. The channels can operate independently or they can be linked – phase shifted, divided or multiplied (new mode alert) with regard to the first channel. Multiple major and minor improvements have been implemented, e.g. when synced to an external clock source, each channel’s frequency slider selects a clock division for that channel’s outputs.

We have managed to incorporate the features of the original expander into Batumi II (sync mode switching and assign waveform selection) without changing the size of the module which opened up new possibilities for the new optional expander. The Poti II expander for Batumi II adds multi destination inputs for sine wavefolding, assign output waveform selection or rectangle pulse modulation with the destination set for each channel independently. Poti II also features frequency input attenuation as well as sine and assign output attenuation. All adjustments may be performed separately for each individual channel or for all channels simultaneously.

The Batumi II software has been rewritten from scratch to ensure best performance. The hardware has also been updated to allow for V/oct tracking and stable operation up to audio rates (more powerful CPU, precise, wideband converters, antialiased waveforms).

Batumi II notable features:

– 4 LFO’s
– redesigned from scratch – both the hardware and software
– new waveforms for the assign output (including random)
– new frequency multiplication mode
– all features of the Poti expander incorporated into the main module
– very wide frequency range well into audio rate
– 1V/oct tracking = so can be used as 4 VCO’s
– in the Phase/Divide/Mult modes the random waves at the ASGN output follow the values available in the master/A channel
– 10HP
– +90/-50mA

PRICE: 330 EUR MSRP

Poti II expander notable features:
– per-channel input and output attenuation for the SINE and ASSGN outputs
– per-channel shape modulation with switchable destination (wave folding, shape switching, PWM)
– stores settings during a power cycle
– LED indication of the discrepancy between the stored setting and current pot position
– 4HP
– +10/-0mA from Batumi II

PRICE: 90 EUR MSRP

"You're a Badass!" - LIVE JAM

video upload by Electronisounds Audio

"Recording Date: 11/04/2023
Tempo: 122bpm
Key: A minor

This piece came about from the Hardware Jams Facebook Group's weekly challenge - which was to create the lushest-sounding pads or chords, juxtaposed against the most spiky and hellish beats you can conjure up. These beats are less than hellish, for sure 🤔 - but I tried to get the Erica Synths PERKONS rumbling hard.... The evolving pad sound is from a Mutable Instruments Braids Clone made by Blue lantern Modules. I wanted to add more pad sounds and make the pad part more sophisticated, but I ran out of inputs on the 1010 Bluebox mixer (Eurorack Version) I was using to record everything - because I already added too much before adding the pad sound - DOH! 12 Tracks runs out FAST!

(Eurorack is always teaching me patching and routing lessons for "next time", lol...)

"Rare Aluminum Moog Voyager manufactured around 2014. Only 100 of these units were ever produced. Synth has been freshly tuned, and calibrated by synth guru Allan Coppock in Nashville, TN on 10/14/23. Has a few cosmetic blemishes as noted in the photos. Has done a couple tours with my band [some pics below], has made some special appearances in music videos, but everything works exactly as it should. These synths are heavy, built like a tank and sound amazing. Moog hard case included. Pickup in Nashville, TN."

"The Modal 008R is increasingly becoming hard to come by and rarely come up for sale, especially since Modal Electronics has recently declared insolvency. This is a very underrated gem. For those who don't know, this synth is the brain child of George Hearn, the co-founder of the current synth manufacturer U.D.O. This synth is in mint condition. It looks and works great. The OS has been updated to version 1.03. This listing includes the original box, manual, and power cable.

The Modal Electronics 008R provides eight discrete voices of polyphony with an uncompromising analog architecture utilizing the highest grade components throughout."

Norand Mono MKII Unique Hybrid Mono - Sonic LAB Review

video upload by sonicstate

"We're looking at the Norand Mono MKII, we first saw this at Superbooth earlier in the year and were impressed with the unique approach to modulation.
The analog oscillators and 3 pole filter are at the heart of the sound, and in addition, there's an FPGA processor that allows for complex manipulation and routing of the control voltages.

Sonically, its a great synthesis playground even though there are some quirky areas - for instance bi-polar square wave mod of Oscillator pitch will rarely reach perfect intervals due to the calibration required to reach the impressive 7/8Octaves of key tracking.

Currently available prices at around £749/839 Euros
