"Blaknblu have made some of my favourite Eurorack modules in recent years, especially the Oscar Tria oscillator and the Foxtrot Duo filter, so I was very happy to hear they’d updated the range with these MK2 versions.

The MK2 modules feature a completely new layout, more modulation throughout, and a number of new features that expand on the original designs.

In this video I give a quick overview of each module, Oscar Tria, Foxtrot Duo, Oscar DSF, and Alpha Duo, before putting them together in a series of patches.

"New to the studio is a Melbourne Instruments Nina. The Analog Four mk2 is still playing the central role, but the Nina is contributing 2 patches to the music here.

This was music that came to me rather serendipitously, so while not typical of what I would post here, I did want to share it despite it maybe not being as accessible as other posts. Odd meter + fairly niche gear + no real drum track will limit itself with who ends up listening. But if you're someone who does listen and enjoy it, thank you.

This track is made purely from a sine wave. The Novation Peak is playing a single oscillator which I've put through a Mood Mk2 pedal to create the ambient, spacey vibe.

I've cranked the distortion up on the Peak which is what gives the lead a bit of grit particularly towards the end.

PATCH BREAKDOWN:
A Doepfer Mini Sequencer is playing a simple 5-step sequence. The clock is from the DUAL LFO + VCA module, which is also triggering an DH-ADSR envelope generator (connected to audio VCA), and the SAMPLE HOLD & SLEW module.

Because the sequencer gates aren't being used to trigger the envelope generator, I can use them elsewhere, and on the Mini Sequencer they can be turned off per step, so instead I am sending these gates to the PRECISION VOLTAGES (Gate A). This means that whenever a gate signal is received, Precision Voltages will activate, shifting the pitch of connected VCOs by the selected amount.

To add variety to this, I am first running the gates through the CHANCE DELAY, with which I can adjust the chance/probability of the gates being passed through to the Precision Voltages, or ignored. This means that the transposed notes will only randomly occur, based on the position of the 'Chance' pot, here at 50%.

Precision Voltages is dual channel (A & B), but I'm using the combined A + B output, so that any semitone or octave changes that I make to channel B will be combined with those on channel A, which is the only channel being switched on or off by the incoming gates. This means I can transpose the whole sequence by the same selected semitone and octave values (here plus or minus 5 semitones) and still have the selected sequencer notes randomly transposing by the same interval.

As for the sound - just a single triangle wave into the SONIC XV Diode Ladder Filter, manually adding the wave folder to create a much more interesting timbre, and with the clocked SAMPLE HOLD & SLEW module randomly modulating the filter frequency, via the DUAL LFO\s built-in VCA, which is slowly modulating the level of the Sample and Hold from strong to nothing.

Mixed on a @solidstatelogic BigSix with @vermonagear DSR-3 Dual/Stereo (real) Spring Reverb. Both cases powered by the Konstant Lab StrongPWR, with small case using a Polyend Anywhere USB PSU, powered by the USB output of the StrongPWR. Clear acrylic Eurorack case by CASA Modular, Japan."

Waves of Evermore | A 3rd Wave 8M soundscape

"I picked up a 3rd wave 8M in a trade (my Jupiter 6 and Poly Evolver for their Xpander, 3rd Wave, Chase bliss Thermae, and cash) and honestly didn't think I'd like the 3rd wave very much, after having played the 24 voice desktop. Surprisingly, I am liking it more than I thought I would. Can't say I like the voice count at 8, especially if you can get the 24 voice for $2500 used... but it's not too bad. I just notice the voices dropping off on the 8M in a way I don't with other 8 voice synths like the Prophet VS. I wonder why that is, apart from maybe the 8M having a much longer release stage to the envelopes, but otherwise I have no idea.

Well, I do like it, sounds really nice actually."

"Crumar/Steiner - EVI (s/n E1/00248) Electronic Valve Instrument analogue synth, designed by Nyle Steiner of Steiner-Parker fame. This one is manufactured by Crumar, who he started collaborating with in the late 70s. All working well and generally good condition. 220V with UK plug.

VEMIA note: the EVI was responsible for all of the solo melodies on the great soundtrack of Apocalypse Now, among many other major film credits. VEMIA can collect and pack: 12GBP."

"Formanta - Polyvoks (s/n 0689251) The most famous Russian analogue synth. All working, although has not been used for a while, so the controls really need a clean, and maybe a calibration. One crack in the case on the back left edge. 220V (UK mains lead supplied - although not the original one). Adaptor included to convert DIN output socket to 1/4' jack.

VEMIA note: the slight damage is likely caused by the interesting design decision to put a plastic case round a heavy metal chassis and adding a lid so that the whole is nearly 20kg. Needs extra-special packing . VEMIA can collect and pack: 24GBP."

Don Buchla’s electronic instruments can be understood as musical tools and as environments for exploration. They allow performers to play in a physical and expressive way, yet they also invite a method of working that resembles research into the behavior of voltage and timbre. Buchla did not follow the conventions of keyboard based instruments. Instead he created systems in which sound could be shaped through touch sensitive controls, complex modulation, and freely arranged signal paths. As a result, each patch becomes both a performance setup and a place to investigate how tones, noise sources, control voltages and modulation can interact within an electronic space."
