Visiting Boddika´s Studio in London

video upload by Thomann Synthesizers

"Al Green aka. Boddika and also one half of Instra:mental has been in this room for nearly 20 years. Green has been an influential producer and DJ throughout the UK dance/club scene for many years. From his work alongside childhood friend Damon as Instra:mental, his solo work and close affiliation with Swamp81, to a string of collaborations with Joy Orbison. These days he still occasionally writes and releases dance music but also works on sound design and music for other projects. He also offers tuition/recording/mixing services from his studio. Every piece of music he has been involved with has been recorded in this room. Today he is giving us a quick tour of his studio (The Zoo) in its most recent form."

Glistening Crystal Harmonics - Dave Smith PolyEvolver and Sequential Circuits Pro~One

video upload by Reuben Jones

"Listen to crystal harmonics glistening in the sun in a frozen wasteland of ice shards and snow.

The PolyEvolver is so great at these icy cold sounds which, although they decrease the temperature in the room, are strangely hypnotic."

"Droid Mischief" - Akai MPC X + Arturia MiniFreak + ASM Hydrasynth + Novation BassStation II

video upload by Patrick Manderson

"'Droid Mischief' was recorded live late afternoon on Friday August 25, 2023 using a MIDI sequencer and a room full of synthesizers and drum machines. Three analog mixers were used with a rack of ouboard effects mixed in stereo and recorded. Mixing and automation was controlled by the sequencer directly to the synthesizers. The final recording required manual adjustments and muting of the of mixer channels to suppress the noise coming from some of the devices. Video was recorded weeks after afterwards.

'Droid Mischief' was inspired initially from a previous composition utilizing a number of budget analog synths from Behringer. At [3:35] these synth along with the everpresent Novation BassStation II play a series of bleeps and bloops with a backdrop of ominous vocal grunts and breaths by the *Korg MS2000*. Each of the Behringer analog synths were patched for their perspective parts with CV modulating their volumes from the *Akai MPC X*.

Three patches were programmed for the Xenomorph voice on the *Korg MS2000*. Each utilizing the Korg's distortion. Dual patches were used to mix breathing noise and throat noise with velocities. [0:24], [1:53], [3:21]

The second part 'The Feast', is anchored by a groove using syncopated bass notes on the ASM Hydrasynth and percussive embilishments using AFX-MODE on the *Novation BassStation II*. Note: 4-5 stacked BassStations w/AFX-MODE would make an incredible sounding percussion synthesizer.

The Korg Radias is always present with its flexible 16 voice drum kit filled with various bottom frequencies, mid and high filtered noises layered and mixed with various modulations to make all sorts of lovely percussions [3:30]. Vocal 'Ahhs' embelish the suspensful parts [3:46], [4:45].

Dave Smith Instruments Prophet REV2 filled in a number of spaces, most notably the drama strings at [4:36] with the Roland JP-8080.

Eight patches were staged for use in the first half on the *Roland System-1M*. Its fidelity cuts through very nicely. I was suprised by the sound coming out of it despite the generic sounding filter. The oscillators and overall fidelity is excellent.

The Korg Minilogue and Minilogue XD take turns playing bass as well as other parts throughout. Always useful and never disappointing. The Minilogue is permanently coupled with the Drawmer DL241's gate to manage its noise.

Engine drones were provided by the Sequential Prophet 6*. It also provided additional syncopated notes with the *Hydrasynth in the last 3rd.

The delicious sounds coming from the Arturia MiniFreak was on stage throughout. Liberal use of its two macro modulations over MIDI CC-117, CC-118.

Dave Smith's Coolest Synth (Part 1)

video upload by Edgetone Studios

"Well my audio accidentally recorded in dual mono, but I'm posting this anyway. This is my first part of a deeper dive into what I consider Dave Smith's coolest synthesizer: The Polyevolver keyboard.

I'm lucky enough to not only own this Synth, but own one that used to belong to one of my favourite bands of the last two decades: Metric. If you don't know them and like Synth music, you should really check them out. They used the Polyevolvers right up until their album Pagan's in Vegas. Emily Haines also uses a Pro One.

I also have a Polyevolver rack, which I'll hook up for my second video of the series where I hope to also have stereo actually recording."

The caverns of hell | Prophet 08 soundscape

video upload by MIDERA

"I think the Prophet 08 is the one of the best DSI synths (my opinion is incoming). It's better than the REV2 for sure, which seems to share a hardness with the Prophet 12. A stiffness? I don't know. It has something I just don't like. The Prophet 08 and Poly Evolver seem to have been saved of this strange sensation. However, the Poly Evolver, specifically MY Poly Evolver, has been a bit problematic since I got it. First, the encoders were bad, so I needed to use deoxit on them. After 4 months, I needed to do it again. However, I decided to replace all of the encoders with 'clicky' detented encoders, the correct ones as described by Sequential via email, since they no longer had the potentiometer edition boards available. I spent about 10 hours replacing all of the encoders. What I learned was that the encoders actually take 2-4 clicks to make a change. This is frustrating because I don't think it is the correct encoders (DSI has not admitted this to me, stating that these are correct). Either they have different number of detents or something about the specifications are wrong - or it's right and they never fixed how the OS views the detents. Either way - it annoys me, making the interface frustrating.

As for the REV2 and Prophet 12, I just never got or never get tones like these. Audio Mod acts very differently in the P12 than the P08 and PE. I don't know why, but they are very different.

Anyway, I do wish I had the regular PE edition of the Poly Evolver... but I'm tempted to just sell it, because I'm too annoyed with myself and the amount of work I did to make it almost as frustrating as before and the Prophet 08 is a joy to use. I could sit in front of this thing for hours and play it. It just does a lot of things right. I wonder who on the team was working there when the P08 came out, and if they left afterwards. I thought the next thing out was the Prophet 12... I don't know.

Strymon Volante and Eventide Blackhole VST used in this track."

DSI Prophet 08 | Wonders a world away | An ambient soundscape

video upload by MIDERA

"Tomorrow, my daughter starts 1st grade. I remember last year how nerve-wracking it was sending her off to school. Would she be okay and meet good friends? Would she do well in class? It was a big change. It's nice to at least feel that there is some comfort in 'returning' to something she knows and feels comfortable doing. I'm at least excited about that.

But we're in an interesting time. Every day she gets panic attacks, crying telling us she 'thinks' she's 'going to puke.' Of course, nothing happens and we have to reassure her that she won't puke. I don't know if it's the amygdala developing and it's just part of growing up. I remember when I was little I would cry in bed, and my parents would come to me and I'd say I'm really sad knowing that some day they would die. They told me that wasn't going to happen... which was obviously a lie. Of course, one of these times our daughter tells us she's going to puke, she probably will.

As for this track - I've just been really pondering what DSI synths to keep. I actually find the P08 to be the best sounding, although the Poly Evolver is a very close equal, despite only 4 voices. I think the P12 is very similar, but it's also lacking something I can't quite put my finger on. I still think it's in the envelopes. Something about them just feel stiff. The P08 and PE seem to deal better with it. But then again, they're all 3 different instruments. I think the PE is theoretically the most interesting and best of them, at the expense of 4 or more voices.

This track used the Strymon Volante and Eventide Blackhole VST.

Aerated Distortion: synth track criada com Moog Sub 37 e MPC One

video upload by Marcus Padrini

Tudo sequenciado no MPC One.
