Elby Designs - MonoWave(X) PPG-inspired Analogue synth with Wave-table Oscillators

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The MonoWave was the brainchild of UK electronics designer, Paula Maddox who wanted to build a synthesizer the roots of which lay in the PPG. Originally intended as a monophonic bass synthesizer, the MonoWave has uses beyond that.

The MonoWave is a wave-table synthesiser with 256 waves available for each of the two oscillators. Each oscillator also has a sub-oscillator. The filter is a copy of the Moog filter, there are separate envelope generators for the filter and amplifier, and a simple LFO. The panel is very 'retro' and 'traditional' with knobs for every function and a simple display. Internally, the circuitry is all analogue (except for the digital circuitry used in the oscillators).... no wimpy DSP thank you very much - this is a 'real' synth!!"

Palo Radio by Bloop and Quack

Elby Euro Serge and processed guitar.

"Members Doug Lynner (modular synthesizer) and R Duck (processed guitar) began improvising together several years ago as Bloop Quack. The pace picked up in the summer of 2018 when the pair began airing their weekly, live radio show, Bloop and Quack, on KZSU Stanford 90.1FM in the San Francisco Bay Area

This album consists of sections edited from the Bloop and Quack Show. The on-air performances are improvised and recorded in stereo from the broadcast feed. No additional recording or overdubbing is done. They are mastered for release.

Elby Designs MonoWave Monophonic PPG Wave Synthesize

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is a Elby Designs MonoWave Synthesizer. It contains all of the waveforms from the PPG Wave Synthesizer in their original 8-bit glory, so you can get very close to the "PPG WaveComputer", "Wave 2.0", and "Wave 2.2" synthesizer tones with little effort. This unit was purchased in December and is still in excellent condition. It was only used in my home studio briefly. I have too much gear and really need to thin the heard a bit. In addition to the unit, I am including a very nice 19" x 16" rack case that will protect this synthesizer from damage if you wish to take the unit on the road or travel with the unit and rest assured that it will remain protected. I will also include the original A/C adapter, a printed copy of the manual, and the optional little grey rubber feet that came with the unit. The build quality is good and the amount of sounds you can get out of this unit is amazing. This unit also has an on-board arpeggiator. Please note that the MonoWave is unable to store sounds in patch memory, so what you create on the panel is what you get. This unit weighs 22.2 pounds..."

A Visit to Noisebug - Synth Store | Interview

Published on Jan 4, 2019 Under the Big Tree

"I had a day left for my Christmas vacation before having to go back to work, and decided to spend it visiting a store that I had wanted to see for a long time: Noisebug in Pomona, California. Blake, the general manager and I chatted for a long time about all manner of esoteric synths and recording equipment, and then he was kind enough to give us a tour of the space. The results are a deep dive into a retail store that specializes in the finest quality synthesizers, whether Eurorack, 5U, Buchla, desktop, or keyboard. This is a must-see interview for the devotees of truly esoteric electronic music devices.

www.noisebug.net

Under the Big Tree is Nick Peck's YouTube channel, focused on music and sound design equipment and techniques, composition, production and performance of music, modular synthesizers and electronic music in general, and tabletop board games.

Some notes from watching the video: Elby Designs Pixie (EDP WASP synth - note Tinkerbell in place of a wasp) on the obscure front. BTW, Serge paperface refers to the original Serge panels from the 70s that had printed paper on the front panels. Radiohead used Analogue Systems. The power buss differs from Doepfer based eurorack. Ran out of label space with Moon Modular! 10 Year anniversary system featured. The Kilpatrick Audio K4815 Pattern Generator in Buchla format exclusive to Noisebug is featured.

ELBY-DESIGNS PIXIE MIDI EDP WASP CLONE 2-DCO DIGITAL/ANALOG MONO SYNTHESIZER

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

With Tinkerbell and a bee printed on it, no less. The last one posted was back in 2011 with a blue front panel; no Tinkerbell or bee. Some details from the listing:

"The Pixie is a clone of the WASP that keeps the salient features of the WASP but replaces the keyboard circuitry with a MIDI interface to provide a more flexible product, giving the user access to a wide range of MIDI controllers including keyboards, seuqncers, laptop/PCs.

To help improve the stability of the design, the two 555-based VCOs and associated decoding ciruitry

have been replaced with a dual-digital oscillator built on the Mitsubishi M16C.

The Pixie expands the original WASP by adding the following extra functions:-
Additional waveshapes on both DCO's (Triangle, Sine and Modulated Square)
2nd WASP Filter
Low-Pass Filter
Ring Modulator
4-channel pre-FilterMixer
4-channel pre-Output Mixer."

Up From Down: Electronic Feedback Explorations - on the Elby Designs' EuroSerge

"I was asked to compose/perform a modular synthesizer piece for a 50th-year celebration of the film 2001 a Space Oddessy to take place in Santa Cruz CA. It was a sound representation of astronaut Dave Bowman piloting a shuttle through the Stargate to Jupiter. It was done by controlling feedback through an analog modular synthesizer. It is intended to evoke the nearly out of control energy involved in space flight. These are nine related feedback explorations developed in preparation.

MPC Electronics MPC-1 with Elby Designs MIDI Retrofit-8

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The enigmatic MPC-1, called the British 808 by some, used by Depeche Mode, Thomas Dolby and others. I've owned this particular unit for well over 10 years now, but have finally given it the sorting out it deserves and since I have no room for the rather large beast, it's ready for a new home.

Like so many other vintage pieces, this suffered a nasty battery leak on the digital (sequencer) board, trashing it. I have completely removed the digital board (not that anyone would really miss the very limited sequencer it housed) and installed an Elby Designs MIDI Retrofit-8 ( formerly the MIDI2SDS) to give you MIDI control over the voices.

The Elby interface is very straightforward to program to your needs, lift the front panel of the MPC-1, hit the "Learn" button on the interface, and it's in omni learn mode - play the MIDI notes in sequence on the channel you want and it's set. I currently have it set to respond to channel 1and the first eight natural notes starting at C3. Bass is boomy, snare is brilliant, open and closed hats are fizzy, claps and cymbals (switchable from the MPC-1) are awesome, and Toms 3 & 4 do a great Simmons impersonation. For unknown reasons I haven't been able to figure out, Toms 1&2 will not trigger via MIDI - they trigger from the pads, but not MIDI. Otherwise, the noise for Tom 1 does not work. Those are the only real "issues". You may look into sorting that or not, but you still have Toms 3&4 working great.

Like so many of these, the pots are often wonky, specifically the voice level pots. This unit has wonkiness with just about all of the level pots, so forget about using the glorious mono output and use the indie outs! Included in the sale is a period-correct Yamaha KM802 mixer, so you have the ability to mix and pan the indie outs as you desire, and even get EQ on the first 2 inputs. The internal mixer was pretty noisy, so using an external is really the only way to go. I'm also including enough 1 meter long HOSA dual cables to hook you up."

Elby Designs + Paula Maddox MonoWave

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

Paula of course is the woman behind Modal Electronics, and previously, vacoloco.

"Old Nik says: "The MonoWave(X) is a early GEM from Paula Maddox... The unknown (to many) ancestor of the Modal Electronics 001/002! It's super! Think PPG Wave and Moog Model D had a baby, and that is the MonoWave(X)..."

Manufacturer Description:
The Monowave was the brainchild of UK electronics designer, Paula Maddox. Paula has been designing and building synths for many years as well as releasing her own unique music realized on her impressive modular creations.

Paula wanted to build a synth the roots of which lay in the PPG. Originally intended as a monophonic bass synth, the Monowave has uses beyond that.

The Monowave is a wavetable synthesiser with 256 waves available for each of the two oscillators. Each oscillator also has a sub-oscillator. The filter is a copy of the Moog filter, there are separate envelope generators for the filter and amplifier, and a simple LFO. The panel is very 'retro' and 'traditional' with knobs for every function and a simple display. Internally, the circuitry is all analogue (except for the digital circuitry used in the oscillators)... no wimpy DSP thank you very much - this is a 'real' synth!!

Paula has now released the MonoWave as GPL and has given me permission to release the PCB and a Component Kit for those that unfortunately missed the first, limited run.

The new MonoWave (X) is a rebuild of Paula's popular MonoWave I and is being re-released with her permission. The new design reduces the original multi-pcb design down to 2 pcbs.

In addition, the front panel design incorporates a 2x16 LCD Module (the original MonoWave only had a 1x16 Module) allowing software developers to extend the user-interface.

ASR Freez

Published on Jun 16, 2017 Robin Rimbaud-Scanner

"A little experiment using the Elby Designs CGS734 Analog Shift Register running three oscillators, the Verbos Electronics Complex Oscillator, Endorphin es Furthrrr Generator Oscillator and Harvestman Hertz Donut Oscillator, the latter of which runs through the 2hp Freez, triggered by a Modcon Quad LFO. Intellijel Metropolis is making the melodies. Meanwhile two separate melodies lines flutter and appear from Hex Inverter Orbitals, also clocked by Metropolis - using Make Noise STO and Intellijel Dixie 2. Add a little reverb and a terrible iPhone film and you have it :-D"

See this post for details on the Elby Designs CGS734 Analog Shift Register.
